There are unconfirmed reports already that turkish commandos have been carrying out crossborder operations into this region. There is one point that it is an area there are no u. S. Soldiers present, so it does seem on kara is ankara is key to avoid the scenario of turkish soldiers facing off against american soldiers. Brent judging by erdogans words today, it appears he was caught off guard by this u. S. Announcement. Is that the case . It did appear last year that some agreement had been reached between the president s. Now, this proposal of a 30,000strong Frontier Force mainly made up of Syrian Kurdish fighters has caused absolute outrage. It does appear ankara has been shocked by this. They see this as another case of what they see as washingtons hypocrisy if not the trail. Brent what if not outright betrayal. Brent what about the role of russia . Does erdogan have moscows support . Dorian that is a big question. Moscow has been playing a double game here. On the one hand, it has been happy to see this deepening row between nato allies. Ankara has been gravitating toward moscow, causing alarm in washington. On top of that, moscow has been supporting behind the scenes the same Syrian Kurdish militia, the cause they see the Syrian Kurdish militia as an important force in the future outcome of syria. Moscow will have in many ways to make a big choice, it ankara does go ahead and launch this operation. In particular, there a Russian Forces in this area which ankara is threatening to attack. On top of that, ankara will be looking for permission to let its planes cross into syria to carry out air support. Until now, moscow has been reluctant to do that. Moscow is facing a big choice and will be trying to calm tensions. It will be forced to choose one side or the other. S. Influence and supremacy in the middle east or in global geopolitics at the moment . Dorian well, i think that will be a feeling that is coming across the region, particularly because the turkish presiden has been so outspoken, although he has not personally challenged president trump. He does feel that in many ways he has little choice in this. He feels his country is facing clear and present danger from the syriankurdish militia, which will get stronger given the support of washington and moscow. But the fact that he is seen to be openly challenging a superpower will lead to growing questions about how much power and influence washington does have in the region. Do you think Martin Schultz is going to be able to convince the party, the grassroots level, to say yes to this grand coalition again . Anika i think it is a really open question at the moment. It is difficult to tell if he is going to be able to convince them or not. The young socialists are totally against a new grand coalition. Brent what do you want . Anika we want a Strong Social Democratic Party. We want politics in germany that support social justice. Brent the last election, you had your historically bad, low turnout for your party. Anika exactly. We had the worst turnout after coming out of the grand coalition for four years which we had. We went into this grand coalition with the same debate. Can we support our project and values in this coalition . After four years, we notice that we have the worst outcome ever out of the elections. So do we do a grand coalition again . Brent did you communicate this with Martin Schultz and the leaders of the party . Are they listening to the young people . Anika of course we communicate that. What is strange is that right after the election, mart schulz and the entire board of the party voted unanimously against a grand coalition and forth opposition. They have turned around, 180 . Brent do you know why . Have they communicated why they made that you turn . Anika the other Coalition Talks have failed. Many social democrats think it would be the duty of the social Democratic Party brent to save Angela Merkels conservatives . Anika kind of. To see how many social democratic projects we can now try to manage and make for people. I think it is a good thought. I think it is the wrong way to take, to say we make Angela Merkel chancellor again and hope to get some crumbs of the cake. Brent the crumbs that are left on the floor for you. What about new elections . Does it seem all the political leaders are afraid of new elections . Anika i think many people do not know in our party what is going to be the turnout of those elections. Many think maybe there is not going to be a big change in the election results, and we are going to have the same problem all over again. But i think we need to be strong and be faithful, the cause when the social Democratic Party now decides not to join Angela Merkel and pushes for social democratic ideas and values, we can gain a firm new elections. Brent your party is so far away from that place you would like to be right now. Dont you think your party reflects what we see in politics right now in germany . Young people in particular are really not listened to or represented when it comes to legislation and policies. Dont you feel like people are ignoring you . Anika they are not ignoring us, but i think we are underrepresented at big times. It is not only young people who are underrepresented, but leftwing people are not very represented in the social Democratic Party. And also not that much in parliament. Many people who maybe share leftwing values dont vote anymore. Think part of the problem is they dont trust the social Democratic Party anymore. Brent why not save the social democrats, the grains, and the left party why dont you join forces and create a party . Do you discuss ideas like that . Anika in berlin we have such a coalition. This is a model that i think could also work on a national level. But there is some distrust between those parties and we need to work on that, so that this becomes an option for leftwing politics on a national level, with having a leftwing chancellor. That is a very important point also for new elections. Brent who would you like to see as the spds next chancellor candidate if we do have new elections . Anika i think at this point it is very difficult to say. I would like to have a woman as a chancellor candidate. The spd never had a woman in this position. Brent are the names you would name . Anika we have to see how people position in the great coalition. I would like for someone to be credible for leading the party to a new election, and not someone to be totally for this big coalition. I think that would not be very trustworthy. Brent we will have to see what happens. If we have snap elections, we will call you back and talk with you again. I think your analysis is worth hearing. Brent we want to talk about the militant Islamist Group boko haram. They have released a video which purports to show some of the girls kidnapped from a nigerian town nearly four years ago. In the video, one of the young women pledges her allegiance to boko haram. She also says she pities the girls who were returned to their families following talks between the goverment and the militants. About 100 of the girls are still thought to be in captivity. For more on this, i am joined by our correspondent Adrian Kriesch. He is in lagos, nigeria. Bring us up to speed on the story here of the girls and what we know right now. Adrian brent, it is a must for years ago that those girls were abducted. You might recall that about two years for about two years, there was Little Information at all about the whereabouts of these 219 girls, despite International Outcry and the bring back our Girls Campaign abroad, but also here in nigeria. Only in october 2016 and march 2017 was the time we got big news when there were mass releases of about 100 of the girls. It was a deal brokered by the swiss government, and they achieved that. On the other hand, there were officials that said that in exchange for the release of the girls, the government had to pay a substantial amount of money, and had to release highranking boko haram fighters. While this is very worrisome, especially if you think of the future of the terror group, it was also a Welcome Development not only for the parents of the more than 100 children who were still missing, but for everybody living in the northeast of nigeria, because it really showed the willingness of negotiating, the willingness of talking on both sides. Brent the women in this latest video are purportedly some of the remaining girls. In this video, they say they do not want to go back to their families. If this is true, why would boko haram release the video now . Adrian we have had a similar video released a few months ago, where we saw one of the girls holding a gun, saying she does not want to go back. It does not come as a surprise for many observers. These girls have been in captivity for a long time and they were brainwashed. This is what we hear from other girls who were released. He said each of them had different ways of handling the situation, and some of them accepted their fate. They decided to get married to some of the fighters. Others, the majority ofesilient. The question, why did they release this video now, is difficult to answer. It is likely timing. He wants to show boko haram still has strength. He wants to make clear the group is not defeated as the president has repeatedly been saying. Brent four years later, and still so many Unanswered Questions about the girls. The region has long been plagued by terrorism, as well as Human Trafficking and drug smuggling. Hopes now lie and cooperation between the g5 countries, which include mauritania, niger, burkina faso, and chad. Today, defense members of the region are meeting in paris. French president Emmanuel Macron has been pushing to create an international antiterror force in the region. At the meeting today, he aims to set down a concrete timetable for that force. France says that donor countries have pledged a total of around 300 Million Euros. Saudi arabia has paid 100 Million Euros. The u. S. Has put in 50 Million Euros, as have the European Union and the g5 members. The force will include 5000 soldiers, and they will target groups like socalled Islamic State, boko haram, and al qaeda, all of which are active in that region. Correspondent lisa louis is in paris and has been following that meeting. She sent us this report. Lisa g5 member countries and france announced today a Second Mission of their joint and the terror force. That comes after a First Mission late last year, a patrolling mission. About this new mission, we know very little. As they put it themselves, they did not want to threaten the success chances of this new mission. What they wanted to show here, and what the defense minister has said as well, is that this antiterror force was on its way to be fully operational in 2018. However, they did not talk about a crucial point, and that is money. So far, the g5 member countries and their supporting countries have gathered about 300 Million Euros, but they will need more than 400 Million Euros for their operational budget, and billions of euros in the long run. That is important for the africans to be able to take care of their own security, but also for france. France has something at stake.
