The Icelandic men’s national handball team lost its first main round match at the world championship last night, handing Switzerland two points and a spot above Iceland in the table so far.
The game started very evenly, with the score at 6-5 to Switzerland after 15 minutes and both teams defending well. The Icelandic attack was not as seamless or imaginative as the team would have liked. The half-time score was 10-9 to Switzerland. The one goal lead persisted early in the second half as well.
Two minutes into the half, Iceland’s Alexander Petersson was shown a red card for hitting Nicolas Raemy in the face. Now a man down, Iceland held the Swiss to a one goal advantage; 16-15 with ten minutes to go. With just four minutes left on the clock, the score stood at 17-17.
