Vermonters ages 16 and up can now register to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Over the weekend, those between the ages of 16 and 18 were given the green light to sign up for their dose. Vermont’s health department says they’re impressed by the number of people in this new age bracket who have registered already. Seeing 11,500 new appointments just by noon on Monday. According to Tracy Dolan, Deputy Commissioner of Vermont Health Department, 34% of Vermonters 16 to 17 years old, have either registered or received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. Burlington High School athlete, Declan Kervick, is one of them. “It was a pretty easy process it seemed like, people were able to look at their phone and within a minute be like… 'oh? I have a vaccine,'” said the pro-frisbee player. On the bus ride home from a game Saturday evening, he says, he and the majority of his teammates were excited to see they had upcoming vaccination appointments. “Everybodys pretty excited about it, everyone’s rushing to get their vaccines, it seems like the complete opposite of being hesitant about it,” said Kervick about his teammates' feedback. Now, with eligibility opened for everyone 16 and older, Vermont’s Health Department is confident the trend will continue. “I wanted to say I’m really impressed with young people and how quickly they’re doing this. It’s the right thing to do. And we appreciate that they’re signing up in really big numbers. We really appreciate it,” Tracy Dolan said. The health department is hopeful the CDC will re-open the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine earlier this week.“We’re hopeful that this is a temporary pause, that we get good information from the CDC and we’ll continue to move on as scheduled,” Dolan said. In the meantime, while people are getting signed up, VHD is reminding folks to stay mindful and to be patient. Saying that there are still positive cases out there and to remain socially distanced from others and remain wearing masks. The Health Department and Vermont Vaccine Hunters are asking if people are able to schedule an appointment at an earlier date than their original appointment, to go back and cancel the original, or later, appointment. People can do this by going back to their confirmation emails after registering for a vaccine, by calling the location, or by calling the VDH vaccination phone number at #855-722-7878
