Israel launching a limited Ground Invasion to fight hezbollah in lebanon. At home american Dock Workers beginning to strike which could send ports and the economy reeling. Recovery efforts from a catastrophic storm still underway in the southeast. The stories are evolving by the minute and all three could impact the election. Bill 35 days until america votes and despite these major developments at home and abroad the Vice President , Kamala Harris, still has yet to hold a formal news conference. First to Brooke Taylor covering the Port Strike in seabrook, texas, to begin our coverage there. These Dock Workers weve seen no time since they failed to reach an agreement with ports at midnight. Many of them lined up in the middle of the street. They have been chanting things like no contract, no work. They even have been chanting were ready for war. Lets go to the left. Dozens more chanting. They will not speak to the media yet. Let me read off some of the signs to you. Machines dont feed families. Support workers. No work without a fair contract. The protests you saw happening happening around the country right now. They handle half the Nations Cargo from ships. Experts say it could cost the economy billions per day. The international Longshoremen Association asked for a 77 Pay Raise over a Sixyear Contract to make up for inflation and a ban on automation. The United States Maritime Alliance seemed hopeful they could reach an agreement saying their offered increased to 50 raises over the six years. Not good enough for the Union President who joined members on the Picket Line in New Jersey this morning. The offers that we had didnt work out. I just told them so long, goodbye, going with my members. Any talks scheduled . Were always willing to sit down when the right number is hit. What will those right numbers be at the moment . Thats not right now for me to say right now. They know what the number is. President Biden Has said he refuses to step in despite the massive economic impact this could potentially have. The president of the Teamsters Union put out a strong statement this morning urging the White House to stay out of negotiations. Quote, the u. S. Government should stay the blank out of this fight and allow Union Workers to withhold their labor for the wages and benefits they have earned. Back live i think the question right now is how long could this last . Ultimately thats going to be the deciding factor with how hard this hits our economy. Weve been out talking to homeowners and Business Owners this morning and there is really a growing sense of frustration with the pace of recovery here especially in asheville. People telling they arent happy with the slow response by leaders. Especially when it comes to water. Here is one Art Gallery Owner we spoke with. He has been here five days waiting for electricity and waiting for water. If you cant flush your toilets and you dont have enough water to drink, you might be able to do okay without electricity for a few more days. But water is ive learned i didnt know that until this happened but looks like water is the biggest problem. How long since you have had water . About four or five days. At least. If you dont mind my asking how are you handling this . Im doing okay. A lot of people are actually leaving town but im concerned about looting so i dont want to leave town. So Art Gallery Owner living in his gallery. No water, unable to flush his toilet for five days but Cant Leave because he is afraid of looting. There has been looting here. A walmart and lowes in the Flood Area both looted. A situation a lot of people are in. You can feel the frustration every day you can feel it and hear it in their voices. There is a lot of people who need help out there. In the meantime, you have the reality that faces you in your job 35 days from now. In 2020 trump won the state of North Carolina by 76,000 votes. In those 25 counties there, he won roughly 200,000 votes more than joe biden. What is your strategy now . We have to make sure the rescue and Recovery Efforts are going on. That really truly is the highest priority right now and well have time to figure out the electoral implications for it. We have already had some basic conversations in terms of making sure that they are going to have Voting Systems that are going to be online. There is a lot to be learned from states like florida who have done this in the past. And georgia and others. I think that well let the boards of elections in the various counties come up with their plans and make sure they will be adequate so that everybody can go out and vote. Whether it will be absentee or in person. First and foremost right now is just praying and working and making sure that the rescue and Recovery Efforts are where they need to be for that whole area. Dana people are desperate and reports even fighting over water. North carolina is the first to do early voting. Did you have an indication of how many people had already returned ballots . Not yet. I think the Absentee Ballots just went out. Well wait and see how that whole system gets unfolded. I know the boards of elections in the various counties are meeting and talking with the State Board of elections now and Monitoring And Work with them to focus on it. Right now you just want to make sure that people will be okay. Bill The Big Event tonight. Big debate. One between tim Walz And Jd vance. Here is Eon Sams on the walz strategy. Voters will get a chance to see two Running Mates advocating with two visions for the country. Reports are he is nervous. He is looking forward to the Debate And Debating Jd Vance. I think its a significant debate. Its about the message. This is about this campaign and this campaign comes down to a question of strength versus weakness. Is america going to be a strong country or a weak country . Will we have a strong southern border, a strong economy . Will we be strong enough to protect our interests as home and abroad . There are two very different positions on every one of those issues between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. I think well see a conversation between two folks on the debate stage, Jd Vance is ready to explain and articulate why america needs to be strong and what we need to do to get there. They simply arent as wellknown and that is certainly true but also such very different policy directions. Donald trump will work all day for american workers. That has always been his position. What you saw during the course of his four years in office was an economy that helped all american workers. We had more people in the workforce than ever before. We had the lowest unemployment among women, among blacks and hispanics. So we know what a very, very strong economy is going to be. I think it is very telling that the union is saying that they want Kamala Harris and biden to stay out of negotiations. That they want to be able to handle this on their own. This is just another indication of the weakness of this administration. The weakness of Kamala Harris on economic issues. But the fact that theyve been told to stay out of the way i think is very telling. Bill early voting. Any hints you are seeing out there for either side . Were very upbeat. What we see in terms of Absentee Ballot requests is very positive. What we see in terms of the early voting in person in virginia, very positive. Were continuing to poll better. Donald trump is polling better than he did at this point in 2016 or in 2020. We are continuing to lead on every single issue poll. The voters really care this time about the border, they care about the economy, they care about our standing in the world and on every one of those issues Donald Trump has a commanding lead in the polls. Over 50 of all the containers entering and exiting the country go through the ports on the East And Gulf coast. They have a lot of leverage. Theyre a critical infrastructure and they demand a deal they want to get paid and i dont know what from a negotiation standpoint, how you argue with that. They have a lot of power. Dana one of the things that a guest told us yesterday is the possibility of Food Prices going up, especially produce and call for number two, prices are already high under biden and harris, food up 21 . So you could be looking at something problematic there as well . It all is a question of how long does the strike last. Hopefully we can get this thing resolved this week. Employers have offered them a 50 pay increase. Theyre asking for 77 . It doesnt seem from My Point Of View they are that far off. Maybe there is a path to get this settled this week. In which case i dont think you will see a massive impact on things like Food Prices. If it drags on for weeks or heaven forbid months i think you will certainly see increases in prices and shortages of all kinds of goods. Dana they are asking for a hefty raise. The other thing theyre asking for is a ban on automation. I understand why they are asking and i think a lot of people are concerned about what is happening with technology and jobs. But is a ban on automation realistic . Well, it is in their current contract. You can say its realistic. They have to negotiate for it and get it signed off on. Is it good for the country . No. There is a reason we use heavy equipment to Dig Holes instead of doing it with a spoon. It works better. But they are right also in their own selfinterest as a Union Automation almost by definition means you needless workers. And their job is to fight for the jobs for the union jobs. That is their job as the union. So i can totally see their point of view and thats what negotiations are all about. Trying to get the two sides to agree. Unfortunately, the merchants, the companies that are importing and exporting goods dont have a seat at the table. They would prefer more automation and more efficiency. Dana the difference between disruptions they might see here and what happened during covid when people got a little more familiar with supply chain disruption. On the surface they look similar. If it lasts for a While Youll see similar amount of congestion with lines at West Coast ports. You will start to see build up as Cargo Veritys to the West Coast. You will see the same queue off the coast. During covid it was caused by a huge increase in demand. Consumers were locked in houses and had a lot of flush with cash from the stimulus and started buying more stuff and 20 increase in the amount of containers entering the country. That Traffic Jam was the result. In this case you will be talking about a 50 decrease in supply. The u. S. East and Gulf Coasts represent 50 of the containers. That is totally different. Good morning to you. Similar to gaza, hezbollah has tunnels as well in Southern Lebanon. Do we know or understand the extent of those tunnels . They are much simpler. The Gaza Tunnels are very intertined in a small amount of space. Hezbollah has tunnels but much less of a tunneling organization. They have a lot more land and own them. You wont see the extensive network in lebanon that you will see in hamas, in gaza. Bill i saw it in person 2006. The israeli version of their marines. The units they are in Concrete Bunkers during the day and then they can cross the border at nighttime, carry out missions and come back in the evening. I assume the following morning at dawn. Bill this is 18 years removed. In 2006 the israelis didnt have a lot of success in that operation in Southern Lebanon. How long would it take to be successful this time . What is your guess . I think there is really two main differences here. The first is the stunning strikes and activity we saw last week. The amount that israel has prepared for this both hitting folks at low levels with their pagers and walky talks, and then finally killing nasrallah, the most important they could have assassinated in the region, perhaps except the Supreme Leader of iran. But i think all of this has blown everybody away. Maybe i shouldnt use that term. Thats a little literal. It is a very different situation in hezbollah, which is clearly reeling. I think israel is very smart, when you have your enemy reeling, you press forward. I think israel will play using Guerilla Operations to secure that and eventually back away. They dont want to be in lebanon. What they really should be and i hope the lebanese government can meet here, too. They are doing a favor for the lebanese government, too, in eliminating hezbollah. Bill two questions on that. We dont know how quickly hezbollah can bring in reinforcements for their leadership. We dont have an understanding for that just yet. How much of a setback this might be, adam. Well, i would say youve got thousands of fighters that are incapacitated. It is hard to fight without an arm or with your we have not just eliminated nasrallah. If you look at the Military Leadership of the entire terrorist organization, you will see xs all down the board. Reeliminated a generation of Military Leadership. Thats a very significant event. That is very hard to come back from. It will take hezbollah a while. It wont be days. So it creates a very significant opportunity. I will make one other point. I think it is important here. Because hezbollah is in disarray, because we did this. It changes the region dynamics. What i mean by that is, it changes our opportunity to make a difference in iran because the reason we did not before on irans nuclear facilities was fear of hezbollah attacking israel. Bill that was my question. You neutralize hamas, maybe you neutralize hezbollah, you keep the houthis at bay in yemen. Now the israelis would have an opportunity to go after iran. That would be a Game Changer if that day were to happen and if that raid was successful. Adam, do you see that as a possibility . Absolutely. I think the israelis have three main goals right now. They want to clear out Southern Lebanon. They want to get as many hostages back as possible. And kill the Hamas Leader that is there, sinwar, kill him. And then they want and should want to take out as much as they can on the nuclear facilities of iran. If they get the Supreme Leader, too, all the better. Dana Southeast Part of the country still reeling in the after math of Hurricane Helene. The new York Post cover calling it a hell scape. Were on the front lines of the Search And Rescue effort. This is a catastrophic situation that we have in asheville. Unprecedented storm event. We are in need of everything, water, power, communications, you name it. Song. You love that music because tonight Vice President ial nominees taking the stage as voters demand transparency over their plan to solve the national deficit crisis. Will they be left with more questions than answers . I dont know. Ed lawrence might know. He is at the White House with details. The answer to that is probably, dana. Right now the federal deficit 1. 9 trillion. The federal government is spending 1. 9 trillion morn it takes in. As that continues the federal debt now has reached 35. 3 trillion. A massive sum that requires more than 1 Trillion in Tax Money just to pay the interest on that debt. The Budget Model found neither candidate has a plan to reduce the federal debt. The difference between the plans, former President Trump adds to the federal debt through Tax Cuts to corporations and all americans. Vice president harris wants to increase taxes on corporations allow the Trump Tax cuts to expire increasing taxes on just about every american and then increasing spending on Government Assistance programs. The Government Spending so much money were going to run roughly a 7 Budget Deficit this fiscal year. The only time weve had that kind of numbers were in a deep recession or coming out as we were back in 2008 and 2009. That Government Spending is artificially boosting demand and you see it in the deficit, which is up massively in the past year. That was on the big money show. With that Government Spending a new report from the Thinktank Eig found more americans growing more areliant on Government Assistance. The Wall Street Journal first reported ieg found in 1970 less than 1 of counties received 25 percent of their income by now 53 counties drew a quarter of their income from Government Assistance. You have a growing national debt and more people on Government Assistance. Dana eye opening. Edward lawrence, thank you. Bill take you back to asheville, North Carolina. This is the County And Weve been there several days. The picture never changes. It gets worse by the day illustrating the level of devastation that Helene Unleashed out the southeast. Were live in trade, tennessee Due West of asheville, right near the tennessee border. What do you see from your position in the town of trade . Well ill tell you the devastation coming out of North Carolina alone is heartbreaking. When you get up into the rural mountain communities that have been completely Cut Off from resource like bigger cities like asheville and boone have had, it is really a tough situation to really put into perspective. I want to give a quick update what ive latest learned in tennessee, in east tennessee. Fema has opened up at least 75 of federal funding for affected counties. The governor, bill lee, did request Last Night to President Biden to expedite a major Disaster Declaration for these affected counties in east tennessee. There are six confirmed deaths and more than 100 missing according to Tennessee Bureau of investigation. 9,000 Power Outages thus far. In these rural communities, power is completely Cut Off. There is no water. There are 20 Drinking Water facilities that have been compromised. Here where we are there is no water to speak of. I want to give perspective. This is a home along a creek in trade, tennessee. Its Cut Off from the County Seat in Mountain City 20 miles or so down the road. This is a home of a young family, two young children. The water up to about the Roof Line picked up this home and shoved it back off its foundation. I did learn from neighbors that the young family did evacuate ahead of these floodwaters. They are safe. They have come back to just look at the damage and get to some of their belongings. It is heartbreaking when you have two young children now that dont have a home to come back to. I did learn recently from County Officials that had been able to make their way up from Mountain City through back channels here to trade there is a 911 Cell Tower up the mountain in front of me they had to clear out on Sunday Evening in order to get Propane Tanks up there because the problem that they were running into was that the Propane Fuel Tank that was allowing that 911 Cell Tower to operate would run out by today. They have refilled that tank and so 911 services are operational because of that Cell Tower. Thats great work. Pulling up behind me i see we have a couple of Big Cats and road workers trying to fill in the devastation. From what i know a Quarter Mile down the road, highway 421, which is really the main connecting point into County Seat into Mountain City, is completely washed away. Locals tell me that a church had been sitting there. It is no longer there. And right now we do know in johnson county, tennessee, there are still two people missing. I know that they are working really hard to get everybody accounted for. Dana jane, just a quick question. Might be a stupid question. The road is washed away, water is a desperate situation. Is any Water Being dropped in for these people by helicopter . We havent seen that here in trade. I do know that they are working to get water to these locations. We have full access to boone, North Carolina from here which is where we were stationed.
