>> well, brian, it's the first time since 2020 that donald trump and joe biden are going to come face to face with each other. we don't know if they will shake each other's hands tonight. democrats are trying to get under donald trump's skin. the dnc paid money to buy out five of these billboards in the atlanta area putting up near highways out here going after trump for his recent felony conviction that says quote, donald, welcome to atlanta for the first time since becoming a convicted felon. congrats or whatever. well, a conservative nonprofit group is now hitting back at biden and his campaign. they are going after him about his border policies in a recent slew of high profile migrant crimes. take a listen. >> he was wanted for murder, but biden let him in. he is charged with raping and beating rachel morin. joe biden's open border a nightmare for american women. >> in the meantime, trump is trying to set some exceptions heading into the debate tonight, he posted on truth social about joe biden, quote: the man is a walking lyin' machine and a fact-checker's dream. maybe we should call him lyin' joe in addition to crooked. in the meantime pollster nate silver thinks this race isn't as much as toss-up some of the experts think. he put out new prediction model shows trump currently at 65% probability of winning the election in november while biden comes in at 33%; however, back out here live, the "new york times" is out with a new slate of polls which shows this is a pretty tight race still. they have trump at 48%. compared to biden at 44%. we expect to see both trump and biden showing up here in atlanta in the coming hours. trump, as we all know, really hasn't been preparing for the debate. he hasn't been doing mock debates. he prefers to be out on the campaign trail meeting with his voters. biden taking a complete opposite approach. he has been hold up at camp david with more than a dozen advisers coaching him up on what they would like him to do tonight. send it back to you. >> brian: bill, one thing i think is interesting there was a debate yesterday on are the president's executive orders working at the border? what have you seen? >> bill: the numbers have dropped significantly since that executive order went into effect in early june. but the big question, which i assume the trump campaign is going to hit him with is why did you wait over 3 years to do this executive order? you could have done it when the crisis first started in 2021 or 2022 but they waited until an election year to do it. and, remember, he said over and over i have done all i can do on the border. evidently not. >> when it became a big issue and seeing lawrence at the diners yeah the economy is important but so is immigration. what is interesting, bill, and that conservative ad for donald trump that you just aired. >> steve: billboard? >> ainsley: not the billboard. the ad on tv about rachel morin and her death. it's interesting how they ended that a nightmare for american women. joe biden is going after the women. he wants their vote on the issue of abortion. it's interesting that now conservatives are seeing having illegal migrants that are criminals can effect the lives of these little girls and women. >> bill: that's a point a lot of conservatives have been making. the numbers are lower now, so what? everybody all l. come in. single adult men from really all around the planet. arrived in our border. caught and release in the country. now you get a sense some of the chickens are coming home to roost, we keep seeing week after week after week horrible high profile crimes involving either a rape or a murder of american young children or women and it's happening more and more often, guys. >> steve: it is, indeed. bill, thank you for the live report from down in georgia. meanwhile, at one point they were talking about a fact-checker's dream about, i think that was from donald trump regarding joe biden. and his lyin'. the "new york times" is deploying 29 fact-checkers tonight for this particular event, including -- plus, 31 reporters and editors. and they are all going to be working in real time to try to figure out, you know, if what the people are saying is accurate. i think what's interesting though is when you think about the two ways that the candidates have prepared, joe biden hold up in a cabin up in the congress congress ton mountains camp david. >> brian: against his will? >> steve: i don't think he was bound and gagged. hopefully not e was all by himself with his advisers and then donald trump out on the stump. here's the thing. tonight is going to be more like it is at camp david. because it's going to be a small event. not going to be a room full of cheering people who like one or the other apparently mic guilties will be muted. democratic strategists are expecting joe come out aggressively. if he uses the same voice that he used at the state of the union, where he's yelling like this in a small area, we had mike huckabee on yesterday. and he said he is going to look deranged. look like grandpa out on the lawn saying get off my lawn! that's a problem. >> lawrence: that's almost an asset for the former president. because one of his strengths is the crowd. and so because there's not a crowd, he is not going to be able to lean on that and be the entertainer that he is. that's something that people were critical of in the first debate. it's just going to be him and joe biden and the moderators. again, the people's person is not really what you need for this presidential debate. you are going to have to know the issues. remember, one of the things that the biden camp wanted was for the current president to be able to sit down and for him to be able to have notes. essentially what they said in the debate is you can get a note card, but nothing can be written on that. so, they can do all the prep they want to. there is no teleprompter and no notes. is he going to have to remember everything that happened in rehearsal. if you judge the current president's memory based on all the other events with a prompter and note cards. not very good, guys. >> ainsley: yeah. another issue tonight is the economy. i'm sure you will be talking to the owner of that diner. they will say eggs are up. bacon is up. everything is up. there was a letter posted on axios and the letter listed 16 top economists that warned of economic dangers if donald trump is elected. but be what axios didn't report is that all of these 16 individuals are either big donors to joe biden or they have supported other democrats or they have supported him verbally. including, for instance, a columbia university professor. he donated $1,250 to the biden victory fund in 2020 and between 2004 and 2020 he donated over 90,000 to democrat democratic candidates. that's one of 16. >> brian: you want to talk about the economy that's what the former president would like to talk about and joe biden thinks bidenomics is great story to tell. we will finally get it side by side. what's interesting too the new people think the new rules will work towards trump's behest is chuck todd. he said you're actually with these rules, you are trying to pigeon hole donald trump. >> but you are actually making him look more presidential. what's his greatest criticism. interrupts. turns it into a brawl. even when he was winning them. he goes out and barbs. now you are killing his mic and keeping him in a two shot. now he will get a chance to collect his thoughts and go. what president trump does with a small lead right now, which is getting bigger is look presidential. that's one of the things he can do. mark penn came out yesterday, last night and said, look, trump has more to lose now. is he actually in front and this harris poll gives him a 5 point lead. my last point is this to keep in mind. you have two minutes for the question to be answered. one minute for the rebuttal. and then a one-minute for rebuttal to the rebuttal. after that it's the discretion of the moderators if they want to expand on that. that's when the bias comes out. not saying they are not both talented, the biases comes out. that's what worries the trump camp. finally o'donnell came out yesterday got bush ready and mitt romney ready for the debates. the biggest change over the last few years, moderators talk to much. 10% used to be moderators. now it's 25%. we are not there for the moderators, lawrence. >> lawrence: it's such a good point, brian. we are here to hear the candidates talk about the issues. wherever they stand on it, let the american people be the fact-checkers. speaking of the american people, let's talk to some of the folks what they want to hear from the candidates day on the debate stage at the cnn presidential debate. ma'am, i know you got a bite formed. i'm going to let you swallow a little bit. go your friend over here and come back to you. all right, brother, cnn presidential debate going to be sim mull cast on fox news. one of the issues is going to be the economy, what do you want to hear from the president and the former president? >> what i want to hear from the president is how he is going to address the out-of-control inflation, how he is going to address the price of milk, the gallon of gas. what is he actually going to do in august the years that he has been in that's going to give me confidence. he is actually going to address these problems that he created. from former president trump i want to just see how he has turned it around before and we had gas under $2 a gallon and we were able to have more disposable income and housing rates were lower. it was giving more disposable income to people to work and get out there and feed the economy. >> lawrence: such great point. thank you for your service, sir. >> thank you. >> lawrence: ma'am, i'm going to go to you. tell me your name again. >> sarah smith. >> lawrence: what do you want to hear from the candidates on the cnn debate stage. >> i would love for them to speak more to the economy as far as the real estate market. i know a lot of millennials struggling to get homes today because of high interest rates. i wanted to see what he would say and what he would do for the future generations coming up in the real estate market. >> lawrence: when you look at some of the polling, a lot of young black voters and black voters in general are turning to donald trump. why do you think that is happening right now. >> trump does everything he says. i think it's very impressive that when we want a candidate. we express what we want he actually does it. i think that speaks to voters. of course for a lot of black voters he did the first step act and then gave a lot of hvcus a lot of grant money and that's good. >> lawrence: that seems to be a recurrent thing. get here and talk to the voters they want to hear about the issues. they don't want the bon bass and j 6 and all of that they want to hear about the issues. >> steve: it impacts all of them. >> brian: yesterday was about you and j.d. vance. today it's going to be about ainsley and tim scott. are you okay with that? >> lawrence: you know, i have to think long and hard about it. i slept on it byy. i think ainsley is free to go here. >> brian: there you go. >> ainsley: thanks for giving me the go ahead. we each are highlighting someone on donald trump's short v.p. les. >> steve: it's very short. >> ainsley: yesterday was j.d. vance with lawrence. great interview with j.d. and his wife. we went to charleston to talk to tim scott and his fiancee. we have it broken down in two parts. some interview with tim scott and some the two of them together. here is tim scott on some issues. >> senator, nice to see you. >> good to see you. >> ainsley: you are on the short list for donald trump, apparently, how do you feel about that? why is that important? why do you think he should choose you? >> i think anyone w is chosen to be the vice president it is such an honor. kid growing up in poverty right here in charleston and having an opportunity continue to influence this country. one thing i feel at peace about is fulfilling the mission. the mission of helping people. >> ainsley: how do you appeal to the independents, the people that haven't decided yet that's the most important goal. >> i go to meetings where i'm not invited. meetings with all demographics. whether speaking to a group of hispanics or talking to a group of women or millennials or african-americans or white dudes. here is what i hear, same thing, we need four more years of trump. >> ainsley: if you are chosen as a vice president, you would be the first black republican v.p. on the ticket. how do you feel? >> well, i think it's exciting, no matter the outcome. you know, evolution of the southern heart that we see on display. and we southerners get so little credit for the progress we have made. the whole notion of judging a person on the content of their character, not the color of their skin, has happened. it's not going to happen, it's not around the corner. it's in the rear view mirror. we are living -- reverend dr. martin luther king jr.'s dream. >> ainsley: when you hear people say because you are a black republican that it's ridiculous, it's insulting, it's embarrassing. how do you handle the never-ending attacks? >> listen, i think prayer is a big part of it. frankly i wish i could have a debate about who has made the most progress for the african-american community in the last 50 years? it was the republican party that cut a single mom's taxes by more than 70%. the democrats are aiding and abetting poverty, period. >> ainsley: your relationship with donald trump has evolved over the years. he said you are a better surrogates for him than you were a candidate. >> he is right. >> ainsley: did you say at one point that he compromised his moral authority over the handling of the charlottesville rally. >> i will say it was the charlottesville incident that made our relationship what it is today?
