He met with democrats in the oval office to discuss aspects of the 2 trillion package. Yesterday Senate Democrats worked towards crafting the bill with a 5049 vote. We cannot dilute or delay. The troubles that this nation has and the opportunities that we can bring them are so large. So were going to all Work Together with this president. Were united as one for a big bold package working with our republican friends when we can. Republicans say its not that easy. Theyre upset because democrats moved forward without them during budget reconciliation monday night. The president met with republican senators in the oval office. Now while both sides admit they had a productive conversation monday evening, they didnt reach a deal, which is to be expected. Youre talking about 2 trillion nearly. Hashing out a package in a few hours is difficult to do. Senate democrats plowed ahead with a partline vote to set the table for a partisan jam. The new president talks a lot about unity. But his white house staff and congressional leadership are working with a different playbook. Republicans, neil, are proposing 600 billion nearly a third of the democrats package. Then a Senior Administration official, an Unnamed White House official talked to the press and criticized the republicans for not being in favor of big expensive programs on stimulus checks. You may wreck the democrats called for 465 billion in checks. You can make 300,000 a year per couple and have a bunch of kids and still get a stimulus check. The republicans wanted 245 billion. If you make 100,000 a couple, you dont get the check. What the biden senior official said, you know, theyre not going to get credit when we pass these big checks. Thats like bread and circuses. This is not about meeting the needs of people that are needy. This is about getting creditple. Its a faulty rationale. If you look at big disagreements, you couldnt reach a middle ground but doesnt seem that the white house any interest in doing that. And then when it looked like they were coming to some agreements that might require some changes in the legislation, might be supported by democrats and republicans, Harry Reid Made A Public Announcement that he would not be bound by any agreements arrived at by the republican and democratic members of the Senate Finance committee and killed it. So back then agreement with the administration was more critical than cooperation with the administration and compromise. If you compromise was defined as you comprise with your principles and voting for anything that i tell you to vote for. I think it sounds like that is affecting the west wing today. Neil well, back then, barack obama had the run of the table with the house, the senate and the white house under democratic control. So does joe biden with smaller margins. Theyre confident they get it through their way or the highway. The margins matter a lot. Neil no, i agree. Margins matter a lot. Its 50 50 in the senate.
