TIVERTON — A third of Tiverton’s police officers are sporting beards this winter, but they have to pay a price for it.
Those taking part in “Grow for a Cause” have to make a donation to a charity of their choice in exchange for the right to grow a beard or goatee.
A policy adopted in the 1950s prohibits officers from having beards, though mustaches that are trim and do not go beyond the corners of their mouth are allowed, said Police Chief Patrick Jones who gave a nod to his officers to expand a national no-shave-in- November program in police departments. Officers here can grow a beard for five months, from November to March, but there are rules.
