First Woman to Face Federal Execution Since 1953 Seeks Reprieve
Lisa M. Montgomery is seeking to have her sentence for a gruesome murder reduced to life imprisonment because she suffered sexual abuse from a young age. A federal judge issued a stay in her case late Monday.

WASHINGTON — In December 2004, Lisa M. Montgomery murdered a pregnant woman in Skidmore, Mo., and abducted the unborn child to claim as her own. The only woman on federal death row, she is scheduled for execution on Tuesday, and her defense team does not contest her guilt.
