Mountaineer Joe Nawalaniec became the first recorded solo climber to summit Kang Yatse, a peak in the Himalayas in northern India in 2017. He was the trip leader on the trek Janet Nye died on the following year.
The death of Wellington woman Janet Nye on a trekking trip to Ladakh, organised by the Federated Mountain Club (FMC) Travel Club, is being scrutinised at a coronial inquest at Wellington District Court.
Reference has been made to documents that Nye’s oxygen tank may have been empty when she set out on the ill-fated trek, and that the New Zealand trip leader argued with the local guide from company Hayan Himalaya over whether to provide Nye with medication once she began showing symptoms of altitude sickness.
