Take a look at marketses this ms quarter, for the Second Quarter which started april 1. The dow industrials are down three quarters of a percent, nasdaq down a quarter of a percent, the s p lower by two thirds of a percent. It was much worse so weve had a little bit of a rally here. For the career, stocks are in the green, s p 500 holding strong, north americas Largest Companies on track to post the best Quarterly Earnings in two years despite lingering recession fears, the dow is up 5 this year, s p up almost 10 in 2024. And the nasdaq up almost 9 this year. I want to point out this morning that copper is at a two year high, another Economic Indicator. Youve got a big week of First Quarter earnings on deck, home depot will be out tomorrow. Cisco systems out after the bell on wednesday. Walmart and deere on thursday. These are some real good market movers, right, walmart, cisco, home depot, what are you expecting, mark . Look, obviously home depot and walmart, youre youre going to have consumer, housing front and center and i think youll see more of what you saw last quarter which is both of these companies are talking about how inflation is hurting the lower income consumer specifically, middle income consumers but also the tradedown effect theyve been seeing happen where people are buying less expensive items, right. So i think youre going to see more of that. As it relates to copper, normally that is an Economic Indicator that would imply that maybe the economies is booming right now. However, i think this specific instance, maria, this is really more about an increase in demand specifically related to evs and ouv andalternative energy an Energy Policy is causing things like that, like copper to go up. Copper is up 22 this year. Earnings season overall has been pretty good. Earnings are up around 7 year over year. Certainly theres some upside that we hope to see throughout the rest of this year. But investors seem to be pretty happy with it. I know the quarter hasnt really started off great but we are again now within striking distance of alltime highs in the stock market once again. Maria well, ill be interested in hearing what home depot says and walmart. That will give us a good indicator into the consumer, right, mark . I mean, oil prices are edging higher, thats been a major issue for inflation. So well see if that comes through with this quarterly number. I should point out that Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer is urging the federal trade commission to, quote, pump the brakes on chevrons proposed 53 billion acquisition of hess, saying it would, quote, give big oil fuel to raise gasoline prices. Of course we spoke the with chairman and ceo of chevron at the Milken Institute last week. Heres what he said on the deal. This is a good deal for shareholders of both companies, a good deal for the industry, good deal for the country of guyana and were confident the deal will close. Were working our way through the ftc process which we expect to be concluded by the end of the quarter, shareholder vote at the end of this month and then weve got a contract issue with one of the other partners that will be resolved through arbitration and that will take a little longer. Maria exxon is also trying to stop it because they want in on the deal for hess and the guyana project, mark, but now wee hear from Chuck Schumer who doesnt want this deal to go forward. Yeah. And he wants them to pulp the brakes on it, the ftc to get involved to pump the brakes on it and this is look, gas prices when President Trump was in office before the 2020 election gas prices were 2. 10. Theyre 3. 62 right now according to triple a. So of course the democrats want to blame this on greedy oil companies, thats not what this is about. This is about bad Energy Policy coming out of this administration and honestly, Chuck Schumer, he should be focusing on things that are driving people out of new york and he should be trying to solve those problems to keep People Living in new york. Maybe start with inflation, crime, all of those things. But trying to blame high gas prices on greedy oil companies, americans are smarter than that. Maria maria shana, how do you see all of this . I agree with mark in a lot of ways. Interesting fact here. Whether its oil or copper, when we Start Talking about commodities, theres been a noticeable shift in allocation al lowcommodities by wealth mans globally in a way we havent seen before which is also driving the prices of commodities in general. Cant be good for inflation, lets keep that in mind. We can have all the discussions we want about the Inflation Numbers being exenergy but how it affects the consumer doesnt matter whether or not you take energy out or not, how Consumer Behavior is driven by Commodity Prices matters and i think thats something we need to be concerned about. Maria i mean, im just wondering if p copper is at a twoyear high because people are holding more hard assets. You know. When youre afraid of a market that is vulnerable to what the fed is going to do, you want to go and hold hard assets. Gold is up. Other commodities are up. So is that one of the reasons that youre seeing copper at twoyear highs . I agree with mark. I dont believe that this is indicative of a stronger economy right here. I think its the opposite. I completely agree with what youre saying. Gold is a perfect example and while its not technically a commodity were seeing similarly things with bitcoin. So all of these things are notable. Its a shift away from equities and fixed income that i think we should be paying attention to. Its happening for a reason. I think there is some real desire to move away from the type of exposure as people are concerned about what the fed will do and what the economy is doing and weve seen economic numbers be a little bit concerning as of late and so weve got to think about whats going on with the economy and slowing economy, a weaker consumer, not great for recession outlook and i think maybe that victory lap about the soft landing was a little premature. Maria so shana, one of the stocks youre looking at this week is nvidia, the Company Reports earnings next week. Obviously this has been the face of a. I. And has lifted markets and many boats across the board. Do you think this rally has legs after the earnings . I do. And anyone who knows me, i know mark knows me pretty well, knows that ive been an nvidia for a long time. I think were very early innings of a. I. Nvidia is obviously the biggest player in that space and as nvidia goes, as does tech in a lot of ways, as does the semis in a lot of and as does the market if you think about it. Theres no reason to not expect nvidia earnings will continue to be great. The biggest concern with nvidia right now, they beat earnings but not to the same extent that they have been so the momentum of their earnings beat starts to slow down which if youre a longterm goal for nvidia could provide you with an interesting entry point into the stock. Its gone up so much in the last year or two. So just things to keep in mind. I think long term, the tail wind remains but if theres any weakness on this Earnings Report i would be a buyer. This suggests the administration has information about where the Hamas Terrorists are in these hidden tunnels and they havent shared it yet. Really . Well, you said it right there, maria and im proud to have cosponsored this piece of legislation which passed the house that would stop illegals from actually being part of our census surveys, that would stop the redistricting lines, that would change how the demographics work with regards to congressional state and federal elected races, that would include National Races and so even though they may or may not in certain states be allowed to actually participate in the elections, it still modifies district lines.
