And everybody else didnt come out too strong right away in the first couple of rounds. Lets recreate that. [laughter] let me ask you this, did they ever put you back behind do you think about and maybe you dont, maybe you should so much and its one of those things. And there is no anything like that. I am proud to be a marine, but i dont ever want to ever be a marine. You never go over there to get into a gunfight. Because you hate people, you do because the people that you love are behind you. And the hours that we spent on the range, repetition, muscle memory, you do get to the point where this is part of it. And what is the standardbearer the first surgeon going through, checking through, the individual thing, you know, the line units. If you dirty it up, you clean it up. It is accounted for. Yes, by you. It will teach you and your buddies a lot. People think that it is silliness, but it takes some detail. It is properly taken care of and maintained. The cool thing about the episode today is that usually we bring up cool topics. Most americans have not necessarily had a chance to sit around and see what you have seen. Have a beer, have a conversation, and i want to start with your story as well. Chapter 14 in chapter four accordingly. And so you are incredibly welltrained, then you are notified, you learn about this, a very wellknown individual on the other side. You find yourself on the other receiving and, how do you manage that . I can only say this now looking back, but i was really cocky, but i was really had one of the most humbling experiences that i have ever had the chance to be part of. I thought it was a really good sniper. But i had a really good record. And then being on the other end of the sniper rifle, with you in the guys next to you, you know, you would move an inch to the left and an inch to the right, paying a bullet right in front of you and then you could hear the flintstones around this court i am not whole this within the 4inch diameter hole, and then you call in air support and at the time wouldnt accept anything greater than. 01 collateral damage, we started to get overrun, and then overhead with a few hundred guys on ground, the element was supposed to come in and support is a little bit, pinned down in their own little engagement, really having to fight our way out of that and i have this tattoo on my arm. I hate the story, i dont hate it, but its a tough one to talk about. So ill pass the buck. Sure, go ahead. You said that you were cocky, but you every time you went out you were scared. Oh, yes, big time. I think he was after when i got that healthy respect that was part of it. Five minutes after that i watched them take two rounds and this little ravine we were in, i could hear the bullet snap on top of it next to my ear and i thought some of the shooting was done next to my head and i saw the bullet impacting them behind me and that was like when the 15 slitter cheerier came out and ambushed the few free from us, and we have underground fighting positions and stuff like that. Ambushing it, watching the medic, he tried to put those on, and i it was pretty tough and im yelling at his ear, and i felt like a splash of water hit my face, and he went down, he was holding his chest and he is going in and out are the same and its the only time i moment and that one stuck with me through the longest time after i got out. That was the most intense that was one of the most intense experiences that ive ever had. You talk about this, but most guys dont deploy five times, let alone five times after they lost a part of your left leg you talk about the sensory, talk about overcoming that. It is hard, you know, when you left, like the first time going back over after this injury and he is coming off the aircraft, i was smelling the same smells, when i was being put on the aircraft, which is a medical aircraft, to get out of there and you talk about as he mentioned, its a humbling experience, does overwhelmed with thoughts and emotions and you have a daily reminder of what happens if something goes wrong in so a lot of times i think prior to that i know that i would than another people would as well. Take it for granted, you go back home, you do your job, youre okay. You go back over, and then you have Something Like this happen in every step you take her mind something of what that that day was. Every subsequent time you go over that track every time you go over there, you can close your eyes and say okay, i believe thats okay, and its almost like you know exactly where you are and then depending on what the smell is, that is where your brain goes and starts associating it with what happened when i was here last time. And so you have to be able to compartmentalize that and realize that you have a job to do and you have your buddies and your teammates depending on you. Im going to bring up navy s. E. A. L. S, both of you in the chapters of your book talk about the movie with charlie sheen. I dont know how many guys enlisted in the military. Talk to me about the impact as to why you joined. Graduating with a 1. 7 gpa, one of the smartest on the planet, it was just one of those things i kind of had to do. Barely made it through, but i think that the explosions of the guns, all that stuff, i really believe that those guys, the little rockets on motorcycles and stuff like that, you know, cool sniper rifles. Never, never. 24 hours later, its like hey, i have to do that. I dont know, my audi and i called it the saving private ryan move. You get motivated to go join them. Im a little bit younger than some of you, but i was in high school and it was like hey, there was no way the generations of americans would fight this war like this and would not be a part of it. You mentioned this and talked about it a little bit in your chapter. Hes a born and bred individual. It was that burning desire to go once or. Honestly i went and prior to 9 11 but thats what i wanted to do. And im thinking okay, youre flying in and i was like okay, i have to do that, that is so cool, when she jumped off the side of the bridge i was like oh, okay, im done. But i do think that there is something that gives you that burning desire to go and serve at that level. Its not that desire to go give him a gunfight or battle. It is the desire to take care of those around you. There is nothing cool, its not fun, its not glamorous, it sucks. Youre away from your families, you have somebody always trying to kill you, but you want it. It is like a drug. And its why you see veterans have a hard time when they do leave the service. The you know, its not like morgan said, going overseas, they miss the people around them and the support mechanism, that these people understanding to my right into my left and that is my support mechanism right there. You know, joining the military is one thing, to have the job of being the guy called to the front and you know that the bomb could kill a person, how do you manage Something Like that . 2 well, you know, you think like there is that moment moment of absolute misery and you are ready to go forward with it. Its like, this is going to suck, but i am going to go forward with it. The better im going to do doing it by going forward. You probably got more out of serving after you lost your leg than before. Its like, not only can i do this before, but i can do it after. And its like, somebody has to do it. Let me do it. Its kind of like that same mentality. Have the half the time they didnt even have a gun on them because their job did not allow it. And it is a moment of truth, you pay attention, do you care, all of those people you can maybe gloss over or hide, you have to be able to work with people to get out of what you work with so that you can see this, all the aspects. These are the most underrated, underappreciated individuals. Because they are with all of this. Because you cannot do this job. You will make mistakes, you will get people hurt. You talk about irrational fear versus irrational fear. And part of your lifes work out of the military, we can understand that psychology. For people that havent seen it, muscle memory. We do a great job and are prospective services of training and taking as close to the edge as humanly possible. And i mean not enforcing the harm upon ourselves. It mirrors itself so well, creating so much misery in the training process, that when it goes off in real life, literally that just takes over. I didnt notice before undertaking this project, we had a serious training accident in 2009, it couldve ended your career is a mechanism of just another day at the office, like anything else and we were flying with the best were very group on the earth. We were hanging out there, we collided with the ship, killed one who is injured and there wasnt one person short of the individual that was in her killed. Everybody else fought as hard as they could, including those that were months later getting back online, going to that warrior gene, and for me i just took that, enjoy was talking about that as well, i couldnt use as a reason to do nothing. I couldnt use my injuries and say im done. And its like heck yes, im going back. Its just an injury, so what they meant its better to wear out than rust out. [laughter] you know it, baby. After you got injured, you said that you barely recognized you can do a better job telling the story than me. But you didnt really understand how you could be optimistic. How did you say hey, that was the worst day of my life. That is the milliondollar question, and i think it comes from a couple of things, for me, very specific to me, i had a brandnew song, like to think about is that he did not get the short end of the stick. He is not going to not have the ability to do things in the way that i can do them. So i think in the larger picture just makes you appreciate why. I think that that bomb, i stepped on it, he died, and i lived. So who am i to sit there and whine and moan and complain about these injuries, these are proof that i will live through it and he did. And that is his life and he doesnt have any more info. And i hate when people say hey, there is always someone in warsaw place. Its about knowing hey, man, hitting the delete button on him, i am lucky to live, go enjoy life, contribute, make it mean something. For me it was like a boost of energy, it was like a boost of purpose, i think these guys will tell you that the moment you find your purpose in life and i could have been multiple times in life, you are here to dedicate your time to that in that moment and that is life right there, like waking up in the hospital and its like wow, okay, lets get it done. Also not looking for handouts, and that is huge. I mean, we talked about that, that i did my thing, that i got these injuries, thats why im for the rest of my life. I didnt quite ask that. I guess since its something inside of you, if the person that you are. I never wanted anyone to look me in the hey, that guy is handicapped, its like no, i am handicapped by by the way i will outrun you. Im probably going to eventually be better at it. Because i have to put that much more effort into it. Its got to mean that much more to me. So i dont get mad at someone for taking something for granted. You get a chance to hear from their own words in this book. And they are recovering. When your countries commodity is terrorism, or just instability and general, you know, drugs, something that we dont allow, any of that. And for them. Guest if the taliban does were going to start all over again if we are creating conflicts in the middle east, and we are burnt out, we could either go for another 20 rounds were we are burnt out, i seriously doubt that we are it burnt out. If the fight has to come here, i will awaken the demon one more time. Was willing to turn resuming civilian life, more difficult to the combat duty and i will be taken care of our heroes. Making progress, the glass is halffull, in my opinion. I think that we got started a little late and i will offer this, the perspective that if you have an 18 year old that goes from high school where you have to go to school, heres a class schedule, the uniform of the day, then you enter into the military and you have a hypothetical opinion. Okay, so now youre 20 years old, 90 offload from the military, which is pretty much a bullet train going down the tracks, they just put you off. You are introduced to the civilian world, would you have never lived in, you have mom and dad and you had your service and believe it or not, make no mistake, there is no ceo or Company Standing there, theres no job offers or none of that. And imagine what a blow that is and then if you add injuries, either a traumatic brain injury, and we still dont have a good understanding of what that looks like, its a very slippery slope and now everyone is coming to the realization okay, we need to work on these transitions and now the infrastructure is starting to be built and i think a part that part of the problem is the relationship between the millennials, the relationship between the millennial and the recruiter and the government and going into the military has promised 20 years of service of retirement. It is a good thing when it was created, but not debilitating. And the rest of our lives is still up to us, we have to get out and say hey, im going to tackle this next thing. We have to find the next chapter in life, you have to close that chapter and then you have to move onward. For me it was scared of losing the edge. At that time in my life it was 17 years old, parental consent and that was my peak, and i think after having bad, i have finally closed the chapter. I hope i dont. But holding onto that, theres nothing wrong with holding on to it, just living in a constant state of mind that that is what i would ever be.
