Federal reserve meeting, twoday meeting, officials meeting today and tomorrow after deciding last month to allow inflation to rise above 2 . What are you expecting from the fed, theyll reveal new plans to boost inflation . Maria, i do their forward outlook and we will get that this week, they will have to raise their numbers because the economy, consensus is well for numbers this year and next, we will probably see them bump up their numbers and i wont say much about interest rates. I think people will assume they are for and continue to be following the inflation target be symmetric. Maria data on detail sales, august retail sales of 1 but as the fall rolls around, Holiday Shopping expectations, not sure about another wave of coronavirus, deloyd 1. 1 rise in sales. Could hinge on how much income earners can spend, steve, do you think we will see a strong shopping season at the end of the year, what do you think of the broad economic recovery ahead of the numbers this morning . The numbers look pretty good to us, maria, we just raised our forecast for this year and next. We are sticking with 3500 target on the s p which when we said it back year it rooked kind of crazy but we think longterm we are probably going higher. We are in a sharp recovery mode here. We have Industrial Production today, retail sales tomorrow. Housing start coming up this week, later this week, so just on all the data points we are collecting from the Company Level and we are getting a lot of company conferences, a lot of the data is coming pretty positive. Looks like economy recovery is pretty much in place. As you noted theres a lot of concerns near term about the election and certainly about the corona start and economic restart, i meant to say, there are concerns but i think in the middle of next quarter, you know, First Quarter next year, a lot of those will be behind us, so we think that the whole thing is going higher well into next year. We also think that the rotation that we are seeing a little bit toward the cyclical will bring too. Maria let me bring in Jon Hilsenrath, jon. Jon yeah, i mean, i think that that the economy is in a recovery from this shock that we had earlier in the year and that, you know, we could expect the numbers to be trending up. One of the things that i wanted to ask steve, you talk about the uncertainty about the election, the big turning point for the market 4 years ago was election day and President Trumps election, walk us through the two scenarios that you see after the election if biden is elected or trump is a elected. Biden has proposed raising the Corporate Income tax, what does that mean for the markets if election day turns out for biden and what does it mean for a trump day . Well, first, jon, i think the market is pretty much ready to know who the next president is on november 5th, all the mailin voting and closeness the election, i think the markets also wondering who is going to win the senate. As you know thats very, very close, and so you dont know whether all of bidens agenda will get implemented. If you read the platform theres a lot of market negatives for sure. On the other hand, without the politics getting into this because theres very strong feelings on both sides of this, i think one of the things that we are seeing is that the market sees positive from both sides on on the agenda. I mean, i have my own view, we will probably take down our oneterm make forecast if the full democratic agenda gets implemented for sure because, you know, because supply and economics but in the near term, well, the democrats will spend a lot of money, take money from rich people who dont need it and, you know, youll see a demand side stimulus and if you see more of the president , youll see continued supply side stimulus. I think the market this time around might be feeling better just to know who the next president is and what theyve got to deal with. We think forward earnings are going to draw about 10 to 15 , all of the things being equal on the Corporate Tax side, 28 based on our math so thats a hit. In the middle youre in the middle of a sharp recovery and maybe you make it up the other way, i dont know. Maria all right, steve, we will be watching with. I know that right now you like stocks and you want to be owning strong with the expectations for the backdrop, it is great to see you this morning, steve, thank you. Thank you, maria. Stephen auth. President trump slamming joe bidens record at a lot knows for trump event yesterday in arizona. Biden criticizing the administrations response to Climate Change. Joe biden spent 47 years selling out the Hispanic American Community sending you jobs to china, raising your taxes, surging regulations. [laughter] i dont know. It sound good to me. 4 more years of trumps climate denial, how many suburbs will be burned in wild fires, how many suburban neighborhoods would have been flooded out, how many suburbs would have been blown away in super storms . Maria President Trump is headed to pennsylvania today, joe biden is stopping in florida. Joining me right now trump 2020 president ial Campaign Pollster and the president of mclaughlin, ken, great to see you. Great to be here, maria. Maria how would you assess the race with 49 days to go . We feel great, look it it we are on offense on the states that the president is going. He was at the Latino Coalition yesterday and great news for the Trump Campaign, a recent Florida Survey that had him ahead but not only that among hispanics down in florida, he was actually winning 50 president to 46 ,e not biding joe bidens leftist agenda of higher taxes, more regulations and embrace of socialism. Its really helping President Trump among hispanic voters. Maria so what do you make of these polls, lets look at the latest fox news polls on the issues voters say they trust President Trump more on the economy, they are confident in joe biden on other issues, though, like coronavirus, immigration and law and order and this is so tight, has been for a year now, whats your take on these polls that continue to show joe biden leading with the exception of the economy . Thats going to be one of the defining issues of the race. More and more as we get closer to election and coronavirus is coming under control we are seeing that the economy is most important to voters. Most surveys that you see right now, the number 1 issue overwhelmingly is the economy and getting people back to work, rebuilding staff coronavirus and the economic lockdowns and donald trump has consistently had a big advantage on those issues even before the convention we had that kind of advantage. Because what happens is, the voters intuitively know that joe bidens policies are bad for the economy. The last thing we need right now is a 4 trilliondollar jobkilling tax increase and its going to raise taxes on 82 of americans. Its going to raise taxes on Small Business, they know thats bad for the economy and its going to be really interesting in the debates as those issues become more defined. Maria you know, its interesting because joe biden keeps trying to add the line when hes talking about tax increases that anybody making 400,000 or lower will not get taxed, but thats misleading because of what you just said. Youre going to see higher taxes on Small Business, higher taxes for the corporate rate and that reverberates throughout the population, doesnt it, explain out that works . Youre exactly right, maria, voters get it. The one promise that politicians tend to keep is when they promise to raise taxes, oh, only on people making 400,000 a year, they know at the end to have day, look, theres been independent studies that show its going to raise taxes on 82 of americans and actually lowincome workers who did really well with the trump tax cuts, they are going to have their taxes raised by thousands of dollars and thats really going to hurt joe biden especially in battleground states right now. Maria real quick on the campaign ads, the Trump Campaign to roll out 10 milliondollar campaign centered on the company according to fox news focused on law and order, is this going to take that movement higher because hes focusing on the ads squarely on the economy. Look, we view the economy as strong point for President Trump and the voters continually give him High Economic marks. Maria all right, we will leave it there. Pollster. Maria welcome back, 2020 issue, focusing on voters putting less weight on the economy, paying more attention to the coronavirus, leadership style and racial concerns ahead of voting for the president. Jon hilsenrath, why are we seeing this shift, you just heard what stephen auth and jim mclaughlin. You say its not about the economy stupid anymore in your piece this morning. Jon that shows up in the fox poll that you just that you just held up there. If you look at President Trumps ratings on the economy he polls ahead of biden consistently across many polls but if you look at the overall rating of like who voters are favored, biden has a slight edge and thats an indicators that voters are looking at other issues. When i talked to pollsters, they have been surprised over the last few months that the president hasnt spoken more about the economy and i think maybe thats one of the things that you were sharing from mr. Mclaughlin, theres a sense that the economy is the president s strong suit and he needs to be out there talking more about it after a summer in which all of the debate was issues like law and order and race issues and coronavirus. I think the Trump Campaign really wants to bring it back to the economy right now because thats where voters see him as having an edge. Maria but thats certainly what we are seeing in the polls. Youre saying you dont think this is going to be the number 1 factor for voters because of the coronavirus and the law and order issues . Jon well, right now it isnt lining up as the number 1 factor. There are these other issues and, you know, theres a couple of things behind that. One is that, you know, when you look at how people view the economy, its increasingly a partisan issue as with so many other issues. When you ask voters whether they think theyre better off or the economy is doing well, their answers increasingly line up with what party they are in and this goes all the way back to the obama days, so when you ask people in 2016 if the economy was strong or weak, you had democrats much more likely to say it was strong and republicans much more likely to say its weak and if you ask the exact same question its reversed. You have republicans much more likely to say its strong and democrats much more likely to say its weak. So partisanship is a very big reason why this issue has been scrambled and frankly the other the other thing thats scrambling the role of the economy is weve had two economies in the trump era, we had a Strong Economy up until march where we had unemployment falling to historic lows and pretty steady growth and after that we had a really, you know, obviously we had a very sharp and devastating recession and we are starting to maria yeah, because of the coronavirus. Jon theres an issue that its in the eye of the beholder and people can look at it from either perspective. I should say theres good when you look at the polls no, i was just going to say if you look at the polls, people are not holding the president to blame for the recession and and thats something that hasnt happened before so thats one of his advantages. Maria well, dagen, remember, dagen, before we entered the coronavirus period we were looking at income inequality improving the wages going up, dagen. We had 3 and a half percent Unemployment Rate in what february . Dagen rate, you had the fastest wage growth for lowestskilled workers in two decades that ranking file workers, paychecks were increasing more than their own bosses which hadnt happened in about a decade. Something that didnt happen under the barack obamajoe biden presidency. What john in essence is saying if you look at fox news poll trump rates better than biden when asked about the economy, 51 to 46 trump over biden but in the Overall National poll its the flip. Its the exact reverse where biden polls at 51 , trump polls at 46 . The reason that the Trump Campaign is going out and buying more than 10 million in advertisements is to change that. To take his strength on the economy and translate that into strength among voters. So people who think that the president does a better job on the economy will say, okay, im going to go out and vote for him. Is that simple. The message that youre going to hear from the Trump Campaign is, who do you think will do a better job on continuing this economic revival from the coronavirus shutdown. Do you think its joe biden . Again, with higher regulation, higher taxes on corporations, here is the message, do you think that corporations should pay more in taxes to the froth or do you think they should be able to keep that money to higher you back, to hire more workers and give you wages, thats the message that youll hear from the Trump Campaign . Jon by the way, dagen, you had mclaughlin, 82 of americans will pay more taxes thats because of the Corporate Tax increase that biden is proposing. What the Trump Campaign is saying is that those Corporate Tax increases are going to trickle down to to all voters in the form of, you know, higher maria we are going take a break. We are going to take a break right now and we want to talk about normalizing relations in the middle east for israel, historic moves, country to normalize relationship with israel, we will talk about it. vo while you may not be running an architectural firm, tending hives of honeybees, and mentoring a teenager your life is just as unique. Maria welcome back, good Tuesday Morning, everybody, thank you very much for joining us. Im maria bartiromo, it is tuesday september 15th, lets take a look at markets this morning, 6 33 a. M. On the east coast. We have another rally underway. Futures indicating a gain of 150 points right out of the gate this morning. Thats half percent higher on the dow industrials, nasdaq is up 89 and s p higher by 20 points right now, vaccine hopes, string of mergers helping to kick off the week with rally. The nasdaq was up 203 and s p higher by 42. European indices are also higher this morning, take a luke at Global Markets, uks Unemployment Rate rose 4. 1 from may to july, nonetheless the ftse 100 up 50 points. The cac quarante is up 11 and dax index higher by 20 points right now. In asia overnight, markets were most higher, you do have signs of economic recovery in china. Retail sales up for the first time this year in china. Up half of 1 in the month of august. Of course, the numbers are released by the communist party and we often question them. Job cuts reported planned now at citigroup. Jackie deangelis with the details this morning. And you got to believe billionaire investor steve cohen reaching a deal to buy the new york mets, the agreement needs to be approved by Major League Baseball owners, cohen outbidding Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez who also we wanted to buy the team, maria. Maria big bidding war there. Jackie, thank you so much. A historic peace deal normalizing relations with israel in the middle east, President Trump will host hundreds at the white house as he presides over signing of diplomatic deal as well as united emirates as well as bahrain. General jack keane, great to talk with you as always. This is pretty big stuff. Actually understanding whats taking place here, normalization with israel for the first time in so long in the middle east bahrain becomes the latest, you called this on this program a couple of weeks ago, bahrain will likely be next. Thank you for that. Your reaction. Jack it is a historic event to be sure, but the significance of it cannot be overstated. Unfortunately the media is understating it. I mean, it is quite remarkable and its only happening for a couple of reasons. Number 1, this administration reached out to the arabs early on in july of 2017 on the president s First International trip and said to them, 55 leaders in the room. I stand with you against the number 1 strategic threat in the region, iran, and i stand with you to help you with islamic extremism in the region as well. Then they knew that that was a rebuke of obamas policy which was to disengage from the arabs and appease the iranians, the enemy thats threatening the stability in the region. The second thing the president strengthened the relationship with israel, another policy move from the Obama Administration had weakened the relationship that was different from any american president whether democratic or republican since 1948 when the state was founded. This president strengthened it by moving embassy to jerusalem and recognizing the Golden Heights and what happened is israelis knew that the United States had their back in the region and that helped facility the deal. Having a common enemy in iran and having the United States looking at that enemy cleareyed the way israel and the arab states are looking at it helped facilitate it. The other thing is that the countries in the region are starving for economic and cultural development, they want political stability and they certainly want security for their people. That is what this deal is about in its essence and, yes, it is to be commended not just the president of the United States, the arab leaders involved and certainly the Prime Minister of israel as well. Maria youre right, this is such a huge deal in terms of seeing first the United Arab Emirates and now bahrain. Bahrain interior minister says normalizing ties with israel protects bahrains interest and strengthens Strategic Partnership with the United States amid on going to the threat from iran. What will this look like, general . How would you expect this to play out, these normalization relations . Does that mean we will see an embassy there, what are the practical things that might come out of this . Well, certainly a diplomatic recognition to be sure. Arabs going to israel on a regular basis and vice versa, tourism, cultural exchange, but also these countries are very innovative and and so is israel. Israel has more startups on a per capita basis than any country in the world and these are enlightened leaders so that is another thing. They are really talking about Economic Growth and development as a result of this deal and, you know, whats not stated, maria, is that the arabs are tired to have palestinianpolitical rejection of every concession made by israel over the last 20, 30 years. Theyve never accepted anything and and theyre fed up with it because the region is not making any progress with that kind of political stagnation. Thats unstated but its in the deal. Maria so oman is also welcoming normalization of ties between israel and bahrain. Is oman next, are there other countries, do you think that are going to come behind the uae and bahrain as we watch rising tensions with iran, the Islamic Republic reportedly weighing whether to assassinate the u. S. Ambassador to south africa in retaliation for the january killing of the iranian killing of kasim salamani. Iran may be planning assassination in retaliation of the killing of terrorist leader who was carried out for planning future attack murdering u. S. Troops and the death and suffering caused over so many years writes the president. Any attack in any form against the United States will be met with attack on iran that will be 1,000 times greater in magnitude writes the president. He is not he is not breaking any he be being real direct here is what im trying to say. General, whats your reaction to that, the threat from iran and more importantly as well who is next in terms of this normalization . Jack first of all, we have another leak likely from Intelligence Agency or another Government Agency which is frustrating in and of itself, seems to never stop, secondly, i believe the iranians certainly are going to respond to taking down sol everything solemani represented to iranian leader not only a professional relationship but a personal relationship, he actually was emotional and in tears in funeral in and around iran after his death. Number 1, theyll be a response. Theyve delayed the response because of the United States election, they want to see who is going to be the president that they have to deal with. I think thats a factor here. Maria that makes sense. Jack yeah, i think they have a number of people that they are looking at as well as targets, bases that they are looking at as well. Maria general, great to see you, sir, general jack keane. We will be right back, stay with us jean, did you know geico is now offering an extra 15 credit on car and motorcycle policies . Others were busier than ever, and found strength they never knew they had. We sheltered with the people who matter most, sometimes finding how far apart wed drifted. We worried over loved ones, over money, over our planet. And over takeout. And we found a voice one the noise out there had kept quiet. When the world starts spinning again, lets remember this time where none of us felt secure, and fight for a future where everyone can. Because when the world seems like its standing still. Thats the perfect time for us to change it. Maria welcome back, week 1 of the nfl season is in the books. A much different mood in stadiums across the country due to the coronavirus. I spoke with home depot cofounder Atlanta Falcons owner, author of the new book, arthur blank, watch. Sorry about the falcons lost on sunday. What was your overall take on the return of the nfl, arthur . Well, i think its great. I give tremendous credit to the commissioner and the League Office and all of our players and coaches, et cetera. Weve had 47,000 tests, maybe 7 positives tests out of 47,000 and the fact that we were able to get the league year started and on time, season started on time and hopefully all the way through completion and eventually super bowl in tampa. I think we are in a good place and i think the franchises are being careful about when they return with the return of fans. We had an option to have fans in the building and we chose not and we would rather ease back into it and make sure all the numbers are moving in the right direction in our state and atlanta, but i thought it was a great start. A lot of good football games, quality of play was at least as good if not better than what i expected. Maria im looking at the gallup poll and gallup data that public devotion to americas past times has collapsed in the last year because of political turmoil, that has infected an escape for people and now its politics when you watch sports, do you think theres something to that, this gallup data . Well, i dont think its its politics when you watch sports. I think what you saw across the nfl yesterday was all of our games, a variety of ways to pay tribute to our history, pay tribute to the things that we have to recognize and improve on within our country. Its a great country for sure, but i think the players and staff and coaches in the league are being very respectful and thoughtful about understanding as good as we are as much progress as weve made, we have a very long way to go and sense of urgency now and moving forward with that. I think the games themselves were separated from that and everything that was done that i saw was done very well and with good taste and made it statements that you would want to hear from our players and across america. Maria sports is just one part of the economy reopeningened reopening and are you expecting a rebound, what would you say in terms of the economy and Business Activity when youre out and about these days . Yeah. Well, you know, what i see and what i feel, maria, that people would like to get back to normal as soon as they can, but i do think that part of our philosophy at hd and thats one of our core values which we discuss in the book. In this case you want to listen to the people that have the knowledge, you want to listen to the medical experts and listen to the scientists an listen to the Public Policy and Public Affairs where people have knowledge of whats going on and we want to make sure that in all cases we are protecting our fans, we are protecting our players and we are protecting the communities we live in thats true in montana or atlanta with atlanta fall falcons, all across the nation, we are in markets across the country, all of our customers, they have to wear, all of our associates have to wear mask and we do that because we want to make sure that we have responsibility to protect all of us, you know, as best we can. So as long as those trends moving in the right direction, i think you will see the economy moving back to much more normal. I feel badly a lot of Small Businesses are not going to make it through this period of time. I do think a lot of the Government Policies have worked well. I wish that congress could come together again now and create some sort of stimulus package that will continue to carry onto the rest of 2020 and, you know, people are going to have to cross the aisles to effectively do that but i think thats, you know, when they sign up for Public Service and they sign up for leading us in congress, they also sign up for doing right by all americans, by the United States, not by one party or the other party. Maria great to have you, thank you so much, congrats again. Well, thank you, maria. Maria all right, coming up getting sleepy, pepscos new drink could help you catch more zs, we will be right back. Maria and it is time for the word on wall street, joining me now ceo managing partner david bonson, Rebecca Walser and market analyst Francis Newton stacy. Great to see everybody this morning. Thank you for being here. First up, a little bit of merger mania underway, futures pointing the gains after yesterdays rally was driven by a number of deals, positive vaccine news also driving markets. Rebecca, whats your take on the mergers . What does this tell us about the economy and Business Today . I think it shows that businesses still think theres opportunity out there and maybe even an opportunity to get some things on a discount and certainly theres a race to this vaccine so we all have all kinds of astrazeneca, pfizer, all kinds of its actually capitalism at work, innovation at work with a race on top of that for the human race, so thats exciting. Oracle potentially with tiktok and nvidia with softbanks actual arm holdings were really making news yesterday on the Semiconductor Space and the front end of tiktok which oracles a really big surprise. We havent seen them ever want to been of o on the front end oe social media side. This is an interesting fit, unusual and its really going to have a lot of steps to get to where it needs to go. Maria usually when i see a lot of mergers i feel Like Companies are using lower interest rates, taking advantage of that, doing things that may have been on the shelf, now coming off the shelf, indications that business is back. Federal reserve is in focus, Central Bank Officials are meeting today and tomorrow after deciding last month to allow inflation to rise above 6 , as Congress Efforts remain stalled. Jay powell told us rates will be near zero percent for the next couple years, until 2024. I think that the head wind thats coming for the fed, theyve been promoting the fiscal stimulus which is in gridlock in washington. Its like a swimming pool. The fed and the initial fiscal response to the coronavirus filled that swimming pool. The record amount of debt in circulation is always a drain. You dont want to turn the faucets off. With fiscal kind of in a gridlock with the fed not purchasing assets at the rate that they were and with credit softening both with bank tightening and credit cards and consumers, you just have to make sure that that pool is filled. That and credit markets, many of those mortgages in forbearance go into default when the forbearance period is over, determines whether were heading toward a recovery thats sustainable or if we have some deflationary risk on the horizon. Maria well, the reopening of the economy should give us some indication of where we are, august retail sales are due out tomorrow morning. Theyre expected to be up 1 but as fall rolls around, Holiday Shopping expectations are hanging in the balance, deloitte is seeing a 1 to 1. 5 gain in sales from november to january and citi is reportedly moving forward with layoffs after pushing pause during the pandemic. So youve got that as well, david. The unemployment situation still somewhat murky. Whats your take on the backdrop . Well, i think that this obsession that so many have on the retail numbers and the consumer activity always misses the boat. Of course, im a little biased as a diehard supply sider. We need the production side of the economy to be moving. When theres a lot of production, you get the ability for people to consume more but theyre also producing the things that people will in fact be consuming. So i think that the retail numbers backward looking, productivity is forwardlooking, weve frankly seen a lot more Small Business optimism, manufacturing pickup that i would have expected by now. What we need to see the economic recovery get more legs is for companies to reopen for business. Whether its here in new york city, maria, or elsewhere around the country, it is time for companies to be bringing the employees back to the office and allowing for all of the sort of trickledown effect from that to take place. Maria do you want to be owning stocks going into the rest of the year, you want to own stocks going into this . Absolutely. Maria okay. All right. Great to see you all. More tiktok talks, the Treasury Department will review oracles agreement to be a trusted Technology Provider for tiktok. Bytedance announcing yesterday oracle would be its partner for the u. S. Business of the popular app, beating out microsoft. Joining me now is arkansas senator tom cotton. Its great to have you. Thanks for joining us. What do you think about the tiktok oracle situation, will the government sign off on this deal and i guess my question really is how many chinese nationals will start working for oracle and should we be worried about the communist government trying to get them to send data to the ccp . Thanks for having me on, maria. We should always be worried about the Chinese Communist party trying to infiltrate our companies and put at risk the privacy and the security of american citizens. I think when dealing with the party, the right approach as Ronald Reagan old maxim about the soviet union, is trust but verify. Im glad this will be going through an investigation in the United States. Ill be skeptical until we see all the details about what bytedance is going to propose, that they will surrender access to the data of americans. The point of the exercise was not to prevent americans from using the Popular Video sharing app, it was to protect american citizens from having their personal data sent back to Mainland China to be used against them now or in the future. This is the Main Objective the review needs to be looking for. Maria you introduced legislation yesterday to revoke chinas permanent most favored nation status which ensures equal trading opportunity for world trade oranization member countries. Tell us about your bill and when you look back over the years since when clinton first allowed and opened up the waters for china to get that most favored nation status, has it worked . No, maria, it hasnt worked at all. This week is the 20 Year Anniversary of granting china permanent most favored nation status. Something that joe biden voted for and that he still defends to this day, even though making that most favored nation status permanent and automatic, putting it on auto pilot every year led to the socalled china shock when we sent millions and millions of our manufacturing jobs to china. What happened before 2000 is that the president and the congress would review chinas progress towards being a marketbased economy and protecting human rights. There were some pretty fierce debates in the 1990s on an annual basis about chinese backsliding especially after Tiananmen Square. We need to go back to that aapproach so we can keep the pressure on china every year to stop stealing our intellectual property, stop stealing all the products that they have been manufacturing based on American Design and engineering. We need to put pressure on them to respect the rights of their own citizens, to uphold their international commitments. We ought not be in a situation where china gets most favored nation status at a time when they were not upholding their trade obligation, theyre shooting missiles at our ships in the south china sea. It wouldnt revoke it but it would be a great point of leverage every year to make sure the Chinese Communist party is beginning to behave like a responsible actor. Maria is there anything else you can do . Weve been talking about this intellectual property theft for a long time now. The president tried to get them to put that in a phase one deal. They said no, we cant do that, we wont even admit that were stealing intellectual property. Clearly, this last 20 years has not worked because we kept expecting that the Chinese Communist party would say, well, democracy works, freedom and independence works, lets move in that direction. They havent at all. In fact, they just elevated xi jinping to mau status which is dictator for life. Yeah. Theyve been backsliding very rapidly under xi jinping, maria. Thats why we should be reviewing their most favored nation status every year because they would then face the consequences of losing most favored nation take yo status wh would mean a significant increase in tariffs which is the leverage the president used to get the phase one deal and it would get the attention of the leaders of the Chinese Communist party, it would also of get the attention of americas Corporate Leaders because one reason they wanted permanent most favored nation status, they didnt want the inconsisten inconvenient acf Something Like Tiananmen Square to get them from permanently outsourcing jobs to china. If they know every year behavior will be reviewed, they might think twice about doing that. Maria its a very good idea. I think youre right. The corporate sector needs to get the memo in terms of focusing on National Security risk as opposed to just trying to sell widgets to a billion people. Two issues that id love you to address. You mentioned biden. Theres new evidence that hunter biden has all these deals and he got 1. 5 billion from the Chinese Communist government after he took a trip on air force 2 with joe biden when he was Vice President and theres a chinese virologist released a report that she says backs up her claim that covid19 is you n made, that it was made in a lab in wuhan, china. You said it likely came from the wuhan lab. She said it was man made. That would indicate that this was intentional. So on the first point, i think its important for the American People to know as we go into this election seven weeks from today that in 47 years of dealing with china, joe bidens only created one job for his own son while hes cost millions of manufacturing jobs from voters across the country. They should have that in mind. Thats what a joe biden presidency would do as well. It would continue to send jobs overseas to china. As for the claims that the virus was manufactured in a laboratory in wuhan, my point has not been that it was manufactured necessarily but that it most likely originated in that laboratory. Now, it could have been a naturally occurring virus that was being studied and that accidentally escaped from the lab through lax safety procedures. The more fundamental point is we dont know the origins because the chinese com communist party wont come clean about what was happening in the laboratory. All the evidence, its circumstantial, all the evidence points to the laboratory, literally no evidence points to the seafood market. That is a cover story to misdirect from the likely origins of the virus. Maria this womans story is incredible, she said it was man made in that lab. Well keep watching that and look for more information about it. Senator, before you go, President Trumps list of potential Supreme Court nominees, you were one of 20 of them. Amazing, congratulations to get on that list. Is this something you would like to do, become a Supreme Court justice, senator . Well, thanks, maria, for that. Thats pretty far down the road. Im running for reelection. Theres no vacancies currently. I think more importantly the list of very distinguished conservative jurists shows that the president is committed in his second term to continuing to put good, solid conservative judges on the federal courts. And its a real honor to be among such distinguished jurists on that list. And i know the president is fully committed to making sure that we continue to have judges on our courts who understand their role is not to make the law but to apply the law. Maria and meanwhile, youve got your job today, trying to help the American People. Let me get your take on this report that were getting that at 11 00 a. M. Eastern this morning 50 o 50 member group ofe dems and republicans will release a 1. 52 trillion stimulus plan to break the stalemate on the coronavirus relief. Is that happening this morning and what will it contain, senator . Well, the reports ive seen, ma hi ya, its going to contain a lot of the things we agreed upon last week, like extending loans to Small Businesses that are in the most trouble because theyre in hardhit Industries Like restaurants, travel, tourism, so forth, helping our schools reopen or stay open safely, providing more money for vaccines. Ive seen reports that there could be a no Strings Attached bailout of hundreds of billions of dollars for states and cities, not related to coronavirus, but to their longstanding fiscal mismanagement. I think thats a nonstarter for most americans. Those states and those cities really need to get their own house in order, they shouldnt be coming with an open hand to congress, using this pandemic as pretax for a pretext for a bailout. Well see what the house bill proposes. I think hundreds of billions of dollars of a no strings attach bailout for cities and states that have had fiscal issues will be a nonstarter for most americans. Maria thank you so much, sir. We appreciate it. We will see you soon. Senator tom cotton. We will be right back. I knew about the tremors. But when i started seeing things, i didnt know what was happening. So i kept it in. Theyve been at homeworking, trying to educate their children simultaneously. Parents need a break. Theyre going and drinking cocktails and getting sunburned and the kids are staying at home. Maria this is funny, jon, but it is very serious as well. Kids are missing out because theyre not in school. This is going to show up in lost wages over the years. Jon absolutely. I mean, its a problem for a lot of parents too when it comes to secondary and elementary schools. If youve got to stay home to look after your kid when you should be at work, thats a problem. The George Washington university thing is another really interesting area. Colleges were built over the last couple of decades to be bringing in International Students and gw was a major example of that and theyre not coming because of coronavirus, because of crackdowns on visas. I think Higher Education, american universities are heading for a reckoning and, you know, they got pretty fat and large over the last couple decades and theyve got serious reforms, i think. We talk about four seasons, the ritz carlton staycation, a lot of these universities were set up like four seasons over the last few years with their wading pools and all this money that they spent on themselves. I think theres a real reckoning coming for american Higher Education right now. Maria yeah. I think youre right. All right. Well slip in a break. We are watching walmart this morning and a its answer to amazon prime, it is walmart plus rolling out today for 12. 95 a month, shoppers can get same day delivery on a minimum 35 order which includes groceries. Joining me now is the former president and ceo of walmart, wss Venture Holdings president and kkr senior add add visor, bl simon. Thank you for joining us. Good morning, maria. How are you . Maria this new program for walmart fits right into what weve been seeing in terms of those industries and customers that can actually adapt to this changing environment. Tell us the significance of what walmart is doing as you see it. Walmart has long coveted a Subscription Service to go head to head with amazon and theyve tried three or four times. This ones different. This one allows grocery and combines grocery and their gm strength which is trying to recreate the super Center Online through a Subscription Service. If they can use the food, the frequency of their food business to also help sell their general merchandise line, they can mix it out better and hopefully get to profitability more quickly. Maria yeah, i mean, you know, since this pandemic started, weve been seeing the winners and the losers within retail and if you didnt have a delivery strategy, if you didnt have an opportunity to adapt to a shutdown, you were in big trouble. Its sad to see some of these longtime retailers actually closing doors. What are your expectations of the impact on retail . How is this going to play out . Were going to get august retail sales tomorrow. Were expecting 1, 1. 5 . As fall rolls around, holiday day shopping expectations are uncertain, whats your take . Retail has actually been better than i think most people had expected. Its not been even. I think there have been categories and retailers who struggled. But by and large, its held up pretty well. I think the pandemic accelerated digital ecommerce development, probably by five to 10 years and if you were not uptospeed on that or of got uptospeed very quickly, you would be behind. As we head into the fall, its been really interesting to see typically black friday, cyber monday, that weekend has been really critical to the selling season and if you missed that, it has been very difficult to have a good holiday selling season. With the delayed open offings now and open offing openings, thanksgiving not on the line, leads me to think that the focus is going to be online and there wont be as many inperson black friday deals and it will be difficult for them to make up that volume online so the holiday selling season i think is going to be a bit uncertain as we get into that direction. Maria yeah. Its interesting that you believe this shutdown pandemic has actually accelerated the Digital Economy by up to five to 10 years. I know its accelerated it but thats pretty significant, five to 10 years. How do you invest today . Tell us where the growth is in retail. Yeah, five to 10 years, and im really speaking from the consumer perspective. It accelerated. I think people had to head in that direction. I think thats likely where retails going to head and its going to still be a mix. I think the vast majority of retail will remain brick and mortar but ecommerce will take a larger role in the facilitation, buy online, pick up instore. The omni channel Retail Experience i think customers are now completely blending the two of those. I think thats likely where it will head. Its also been really a change from an investment standpoint, maria. This has really been more the Amazon Effect than anything i can think of and that, you know, five years ago used do be grow your profit faster than your sales and your share price would move forward. Now, if youre not growing Digital Sales at a hyper active rate its hard to get a good valuation on your company and we see retailers and walmarts a great example. Theyve invested a ton of money and almost a third of their operating income theyve given up in order to build an ecommerce business and yet investors have rewarded them by buying their stock. Its in the near historic highs. So theres been a change fundamentally from an investment standpoint as well. Maria target is pledging more diversity within its workforce, promising to increase the number of black employees by 20 over the next three years. Reaction there . What are the main issues in your view today aside from the Digital Economy for retail . Well, i mean, with respect to target, brian cornells done a terrific job there since he got to the company and i think he stepped into a difficult role, they were stuck in an experiment gone bad in canada. He got them out of that, headed them in the right direction. Their moves in diversity i think are in the right direction. You really have to have a workforce that balances the population if you want to have the best talent and serve your customers well so i think that thats the right move for them, particularly theyre a minneapolis based company and with all the issues that have been going on there this summer, i think its a good move for them. Maria we know Consumer Spending is twothirds of Economic Growth. Let me get your take before you go on the backdrop. Are you expecting a comeback in this economy in 2020 . Whats your take on where we stand in terms of the economic recovery . You know, ive been surprised, i think many people have, maria, at the resilience of the consumer through all this. You know, i think that as long as we continue to see jobs come back, hopefully the two sides in washington will come to some agreement on another stimulus bill to help people who are still struggling. But i wouldnt have bet that Employment Unemployment would have been in the 8 range at this stage. So i think were ahead of where we thought we would be. Retail is ahead of where i thought it would be which indicates to me i think the consumer is going to remain pretty strong. Maria we will leave it there. Thank you so much for your insights. Thanks, maria. Maria bill simon joining us. Coming up, chief Economic Advisor mohammed hel elerian s here to talk about the fed meeting and mergers in financial a services. And Ken Cuccinelli on actions to block chinese products from being made by forced labor, all coming up. Youre watching mornings with maria live on fox business. Good job, michael does. Ok, lindsey now tell the class what your mommy does. My mom has super powers. Its like she can see the future. What . its like she time travels in a rocket ship. Thats cool and then she comes back saying try this or try that. She helps everyone. She helps them feel less worried. Wow mommy, so what is it that you do . Im a Financial Advisor. She is aig proudly supports all the professionals taking care of our financial futures. Before money, people tools, cattle, grain, even shells represented value. Then currency came along. They made it out of copper, gold, silver, wampum. Soon people decided to put all that value into a piece of paper, then proceeded to wave goodbye to value, printing unlimited amounts of money as they passed the buck to the future. Thats why its time for Digital Currency and your investment in the grayscale funds. Go digital. Go grayscale. Maria welcome back. The Federal Reserve in focus this morning, the central bank is kicking off a twoday meeting today, no change in rates is expected but many are hoping for some clarity on the new inflation policy. Weve seen Federal Reserve chairman jay powell and other officials become more outspoken on fiscal stimulus amid the pandemic which is an unusual move. Joining me now to talk more about that is chief Economic Advisor, mohammed elerian. Thank you for being here. Thank you, maria and good morning. Maria lets talk about the fed. What are you expecting today . That inflation change recently has some people wondering if were going to hear more about that and of course we already know that powell said rates are going to be near zero until 2024. So a lot of people in the marketplace are pushing the fed to do more in terms of guidance. Extend the period where rates will be zero and suggest that you can do more in terms of passive purchases. Thats doable. The fed can do that and certainly has reason to do that, as you said, to change the framework, have a lot more flexibility. The data isnt that encouraging. The fiscal discussions arent going that well on the hill. The problem, maria, is that the more they do on their own, the greater the Collateral Damage and unintended consequences, especially for Financial Stability in the future. So what should they do . Nothing. But its likely that theyre going to try and be even more doveish than they have been already. Maria i mean, weve already seen an enormous amount of stimulus, mohammed. Can the fed actually move the needle any more than it already has. How much stimulus would you say has already been done by the fed because theres also that leverage that when the fed works together with treasury, it even becomes higher than that. Do you expect that this is going to have an impact on the economic recovery . So in my view, theyve already done too much. Why . Because the impact on the real economy, on the economic recovery is limited. But the impact on asset pricing, housing prices, is significant. So what they end up doing inadvertently is decoupling wall street from main street. What we really need is a more comprehensive policy response but that requires agreement on capitol hill and thats what were lacking right now. Maria i see. Mohammed, let me ask you about this story that we were reporting yesterday and that is that ubs chairman axel weber has mapped out a merger with Credit Suisse. This would create a unified swim champion in Wealth Management and Investment Banking. The Financial Times is reporting that no more mall discussions have taken place with Credit Suisse, however, weber has used consultants to examine the potential for a deal. What would this mean for europe . You studied europe and the ecb so much. If we were to see ubs and Credit Suisse actually merge to become a behemoth for europe. This is a typical yes, but. This makes sense in two ways. They can achieve economies of scale, they can cut costs, consolidate back offices, they can cut branches and they can play offense better. They can become a Critical Mass and start challenging the jp morgans and the like when it comes to Investment Banking and Wealth Management. That is the yes part of it, maria. The but part of it is are they willing to shed a lot of labor . Will the regulators allow a massive bank, given the experience of the past with both institutions. And finally, what about the cultures. These are two very different banks. My gut feeling is what youre going to get is openness to merge, but it may not be ubs, Credit Suisse. Ubs may look for somebody elsewhere the but bit of it is less pronounced. Maria all right. Well see where this goes. This would be an enormous deal as you say and the Banking System in europe of course has been troubled for some time. Let me bring in Jon Hilsenrath. Go ahead, jon. Jon hey, mohammed. Ive got two questions for you. One quickly is weve been talking a lot on this program about state and local governments and whether theyre under stress and are going to be cutting back this fall. So my first question is are you seeing that, is that a problem . My second is, looking forward past the election, what does the fed look like in a Biden Administration for a Trump Administration . Who does the new you president or the current president choose to run that place and does it matter to the markets who that person is going to be . So on the first issue, and good morning, jon. On the first issue, the major challenge we face in the u. S. Economy is income support. The labor market is not doing as well as it should be. We saw the jobless claims, initial claims number. And with the stalemate in congress theres also less income support for people. So the concern is and i think its real, that state and local contracting which is what they will have to do, will just add to the headwind, the income headwind and a thats not what we need right now. On the second issue, its a great question, jon. My own gut feeling is that if President Trump is reelected, he probably keeps jerome powell. The fed chair has pivoted in a very major way as you know and has provided a lot of stimulus to this economy. If biden is elected, im not sure what happens. And powell has been also very sensitive to Income Distribution issues so it would be a close call. I think what the markets will want is continuity. They just want continuity of a fed that has been uber doveish and that has supported asset crisis. Maria that makes a lot of sense. Its great to see you this morning. Thanks so much. Crawling is the word to use moving at two miles per hour, right now, here in gulfport the winds have picked up substantially in last 30 minutes, you can see, it is not raining but look how quickly clouds are moving, as sally moves from the east to the west this is a marina in gulfport you can see for the most part the boat he owners heeded evacuation orders for veflz there are a few boats left, the two concerns here in you gulf port and many parts along the the gulf coast, including in florida, louisiana, mississippi alabama, is the combination of the storm surge along with the rainfall we are expecting 7 to 11 feet of storm surge at potential worst along with several inches of rain could make for the a bad combination, of the water moving from the gulf on to land as well as rainfall causing flash flooding in the streets, people are taking this seriously they have been preparing for several days, now here in gulf coast port as we wait for that purn back to the east from sally, this is an area that dealt with hurricanes many times before, the region just dealt with laura couple weeks ago that storm caused four to seven billion dollars worth of Property Damage and lost economic output according to moodys so this is an area that is familiar with the preparations that they need to take when storms come in, this is not something that i also new to them but each time you have to take it just as seriously maria as sally and inches closer. Snoo how would you assess the race f an interesting are look how president campaigns reelection will be in white house for part of the day, with the leaders, of bahrain uae israel, so celebrating this historic agreement. That they have made between them so that is something only a president can do, only in the white house, then has to go to pennsylvania to campaign, joe biden will be in florida, the whole time that is kind of a campaign, in a nutshell, it is are in apparently closer Newest National fox news poll had biden up 5, 5146 polls in key states florida, North Carolina pensdz michigan wisconsin arizona mostly closer. Dagen mcdowell jump in. Dagen how does president convert his winning message on the economy, we were talking earlier, about how he polls better, than joe biden, on his handling economy into an actual lead particularly in the swing states, one thing that joe biden in that Climate Change, diatribe he went on yesterday carefully scripted i might add the fact he didnt tell people hey, 15 years from now we are getting rid of fossil fuels and Power Production that means we are going to put you folks in the midwest pennsylvania ohio out of work, left out the message that Hillary Clinton so badly that electricity bills are going up across the country. Pollsters add people who do you most trust to he handle this or that issue, the one issue that trump is consistently still in the lead is the economy. And basically, what his message is he is getting people to remember what the economy was, before the coronavirus lockdown us know we build best economy in the world it was working for you, you know why, it went down, i know why weve had this problem it is because of this outside tragedy this coronavirus, and we are building it again look at numbers things Getting Better and better. Joe biden will not do that, so that is the i mean that is the into custody shell of the president s argument, on the economy, the question is whether people will remember where they were six months ago. Byron let me ask you about this report, of the phones being wiped devin nunes as you know on sunday morning futures with me, this weekend. And we were talking about obstruction of justice as investigators investigate the a giftors questions about durham investigation are we getting indictments next two weeks one of his top aides resigned last week amid reports of the doj was pressing team to look into misconduct, and the fact they made up this narrative the president colluded with russia. Now we understand records show, up to 30 phones prolonging to members of robert you muellers team wiped clean devin nunes told me they wiped them clean after text inches between page and strzok isnt that obstruction of justice snoo it could be fishy i did not know of iphone erasure feature but people have all sorts of pressure things on phones photographs contacts all sorts of stuff, apple did not make it easy to accidentally erase everything on the phone, when you look at what it takes to actually erase an iphone by entering the wrong password you have to do it four times that the row this is somebody perhaps stolen iphone trying to get it open, and thenthe iphone makes you pause if you try it again i have wrong makes you pause longer takes about three hours to erase an iphone entering the wrong password andrew weissmann, the pit bull of murl investigation managed to do that with two phones. It is really very suspicious. Unbelievable feels like there are certainly people protected they can obstruct justice collude nothing happens hunter biden new secret Service Travel records show he made more than 400 trips to 29 Different Countries between 2009 and 2014. Border protection issuing withhold release orders on products made using forced labor in xinjiang china, joining me official leading this effort, acting Homeland Security deputy secretary Ken Cuccinelli great to see you. Thanks very much for being here. Good morning good to be back with you. Maria we have shown video of these uighurs, minorities that are locked up pretty much in camps in china, tell us what your trying to do, and were going to look at video right now want to point out this video, was shot, about a year and a half ago i believe from 2018 regardless of when it is from you can clearly see uighurs minority population in china, being told where to go, handcuffed blindfolded, et cetera, actually very disturbing video tell me how connect the dots to products that make its way into United States. Customs and border issue in addition to ones theyve issued this year. Under Trump Administration unprecedented level of interdiction of this tried for the fortuitous 18 video one called Vocational Education center, what it really is a concentration camp, some of the video footage looks like, while not from that facility, looks consistent with life they live. Without freedom, without choice, and under oppression. And they are forced to work, and those products are then sold attempted to be sold in the United States those products will now be blocked, at the ports of entry for United States and they wont be able to sell them here, again this is an expansion of earlier efforts this year, by customs and Border Protection reaching into last fiscal year as well President Trump has been very aggressive on this subject, really been the most stall wart president weve had in this century on this subject we are in a good position here we have the evidence to demonstrate that these products these five companies we identified are writing into United States made with slave labor, so once we are over that legal thresher we dont have to release those products into United States this has the benefit of protecting American Workers who he dont have to compete against literally you slave labor, of course, american businesses in the same boat, are competing with companies thatr employing that slave labor. Maria then there are china travel warnings state department issuing advisory saying prc government arbitrarily enforces local laws including arbitrary wrongful detentions through use exit bans on u. S. Citizens without due process of law should americans be wary traveling to china or hong kong right now secretary . Are you expecting retaliation china has been very clear any country that gets involved in our business, is is breaking laws, and we will retaliate, so, obviously, u. S. Has been pretty aggressive in pushing back on chinas behavior, what could they do in retaliation . Well, in fact, the warning you see from the state department, really addresses one of their retaliation methods. It is the random arbiter arrest of americans, i believe the british issuing a similar warning, not too long ago either, so this is a tactic for retaliation not like they can retaliate against forced labor camping in the United States because there arent any so they are in a category of their own, by running concentration camps between one and two, may be more million people, in the them, and they dont have anything on point that they can hit us back with. So they have to use other often arbitrary elements tools to push back the department of state travel warning. Will the. Dagen i know netflix responded as well saying that the remove is a associate commentary against sexualization of Young Children part of that they said i have not watched it i want to make that clear do i find this outrage over the one film to be a little lopsided. This is a french film. In United States literally for more than a decade we have had to dolers in tierras dance moms very, very young women or girls are portrayed there is going to be, a loud resounding voice against the sexualization of young women and girls than we need to rather than focusing on this movie lets hear it lets hear about it what we see on instagram. Where do we go from here. Maria yeah no. I dwree with that, it is more than just one movie on one streaming service but i watched the the trailer, and really i weally disgusted i not seen toddler ins tierra the other one you referenced so i dont know but looking at 11yearold girls made up in swebsy outfits humping the floor . It is disgusting i am shocked, i dont understand understand what director is saying as artist we have to have debate . Debate about what . Yes. What is your take i got to get your you are insights from austin given i live there did you see that sign enter at your own risk. Yeah, i know both sides of it so i can speak on both sides for starters one charity peace, love, happiness does a big motorcycle ride every year, for First Responders, are Paramedics Police officers we are very much involved when hurt in line of duty led to signs we take care of First Responders their families because not enough money there, to promptly take care so we take care of them very much involved with police on motorcycle rides with us the other side, okay . The mayor, the mayor nose this why he didnt react on what were doing is beyond me because he knows he has been out there with us, we started, in east austin mobile loafs, fishes called impunity built residences for 240 Homeless People ones saying dont have a police take care of them 240 we are building another 400 our Community Takes care of food for people, things for them to do metal shop woodshop variety of things little to zero crime in that area, are in other words, what they hoped to accomplish by getting rid of Defunding Police so that lets say better assistance we are already doing it in east austin the answer is mayor you jumped the gun, take what we did in east austin move towards center of the city other parts of our city do we need to Defund Police now . No o. What is the end result . I am watching on television it really scares me painful, to see somebody walk up los angeles on tv and blow away two police officers, are sitting in their car murder, run off like that, too far police are sake o. Is the city city still feel different to you is it feels different to me only because of conversation between both sides. Since i go between two i miss that extra kashall we say crime area i go straight to the Homeless People there, however, people that i know that are in this area, are saying my god we are afraid we dont want to come downtown anymore we want to stay home we are afraid what have they are doing the mayor had a great idea, but not utopian, he jumped the gun his idea to more social worker et cetera, et cetera, jumped the gun a lot of us in you private sector already doing it with our own money but be need to police out there, the more the Police Starts disappearing off the street, eventually kite be a good thing eventually, but definitely not now not in environment United States is in right now the Police Department putting those signs up, they have their people that died, die on the streets, i mean we helped support them die get injured now they want less of tell us means more could get injured or hurt because not enough police out there . Both sides have a good pointed of view, with all Due Diligence mr. Mayor you know what we are doing out there taking care of crime homelessness everything, lets move before you defund everybody. My reaction is it is politics. He is not saying were going to have to pay over long period of time saying if we do it we are going to articulation rich somebody said may have been Margaret Thatcher years ago keep taxing the rich taxing and taxing them until there is no one left to tax then what are you going to do . Mr. Biden, my advice to you sir with all due respect youve never been businessman best of my knowledge when you take corporate profits away people are used to distributions they are getting back on jobs cutting back on this expense that expense, can when means cutting back on job laibt market. As corporations earnings go down they find ways to keep them up for shareholders i think you are jumping the gun it is easier mr. Biden anyone in presidency work with businesspeople find Solutions Like corporations that are under a certain budget instead of spend spend spend we keep spending, it shows already, no disrespect socialism doesnt work look at places they have it. You make a good point. A well, ive got to say i like the pills diagnose nanoTechnology Makes things small enough pill size technology swallow it can diagnose problems you have this is coming right now because there are smart pills that you can swallow into in stomach wear sensor tells you what is wrong i like that real nearterm probably happening i am intrigued by supervision stuff like to see things we couldnt see with naked rely eye. Easy to hold iphone camera phone basically we have seen on one plus apro, photo filtering lets you see inside technology, that seems pretty realistic to me as well. I love this idea of taking a pill, and then you can know anything that could be wrong. Right. How soon are some of these things what is your prediction in terms of about what will happen first . To a. Well, you know, i think smart pill is going to happen in the nearterm i think the bigger question is how comfortable will people be swallowing technology and will there be concerns about privacy . Have obviously, if you swallow something has to communicate with something on the outside that means it has some sort of Wireless Technology you want maybe a little bit worried about somebody interseconding that information it is better than opened up for a doctor to look inside what is going to happen, five, 10 years what we are definitely going to see that.
