David L Faust’s letter to the editor is the Sun-Gazette on Jan. 5 is spot on. But to crack the grip of the state education system to make more positive changes will be tough. Dr. Pignatello at Lock Haven finally succumbed to the merger idea and was in the running for a job at a private university in New Jersey. Congrats to him if he landed that position. But to make inroads to change some of the 500 school districts in Pennsylvania will be very difficult. The teachers’ union is one of the most powerful and influential unions in the nation. To apply the merging idea to state alphabet agencies is a concept that I have written about before: Pa Game Commission with the PA Fish and Boat Commission, the PA Dept of Environmental Resources and the Dept of Conservation and Natural Resources should be combined into one agency and the deadwood eliminated. And there is a lot of it. But us taxpayers will be stuck with their underfunded pension funds. Some of my fellow baby boomers are still around, Dave.
