Etowah County Probate Judge Scott Hassell knew the county needed to replace its Auto Marks electronic ballot-marking machines — machines that assist voters with physical challenges that prevent them from marking their own ballots.
He'd already gotten some quotes and was planning to bring the issue into budget talks in the summer. Then came word from the Alabama secretary of state's office that the state had negotiated for new machines, and that based on the number of polling places in Etowah County, the cost would be about $85,000.
But here's the good part: The secretary of state's office will reimburse the county 100%.
