The mission would land astronauts on the moon for the first time in nearly 50 years.
"Today, I'm very excited, and we are all very excited to announce that we have awarded SpaceX to continue the development of our integrated human landing system," NASA's Human Landing program manager Lisa Watson-Morgan said in a call with reporters Friday afternoon.
It's unclear where the lunar lander will be built, but SpaceX has a significant presence in far South Texas, with an operations site near Boca Chica that includes a production facility and a launch site. Ultimately the lunar lander will be launched from space, but it's not yet clear from which Earth-based location the craft will hitch a ride into space.
