Election Panel Says Community Control Petition Was Counted And Recounted And Fell Short
Tuesday, December 22, 2020 - by Gail Perry
The Hamilton County Election Commission said Tuesday that the Community Control Petition was counted and recounted and fell short. The final count of names fell short on a petition to establish an ordinance that a group known as Community Control Now Coalition believed would reflect the will of the people. The ordinance that they had hoped to pass was regarding the community’s respect and trust in guiding the Chattanooga Police Department and how citizen complaints would be handled.
The proposed group would have had nine members with much stronger power than the current police advisory board. And they would have had subpoena power. There were 4,719 names needed on a petition to get the question on the March 3, 2021 ballot.
