A temporary 24-7 homeless shelter at the Edmonton Convention Centre closed Friday morning, reducing overnight capacity across the shelter system by 300 spaces.
Tipinawâw, Cree for sheltered from the outside elements, has been operating out of the Downtown convention centre since October to provide more space during the COVID-19 pandemic and provided meals and essential services to more than 600 people daily as well as 300 overnight sleep spaces. The shelter cost $13.9 million, with $2.5 million in funding from the city. With its closure, capacity in the shelter system has been cut and residents will need to find somewhere else to go.
