With the San Diego region being home to one of the largest military concentrations on Earth, Pentagon scandals resonate even if they are across the nation. That very much holds for the recent announcement that the Army had fired or suspended 14 senior officials at Fort Hood, Texas. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy cited “failures of leadership” related to the brutal April killing of soldier Vanessa Guillén by fellow soldier Aaron David Robertson and to some of the 20-plus other deaths of soldiers due to suicide, homicide or accident this year at the nation’s second-largest base. (Robertson committed suicide when he was approached by police after evidence showed what he had done.)
