Of war and conflict. Im sumi so much going to thank you for joining us the British Public will hold a minutes silence today to pay tribute to frontline workers who have died after Contracting Co that 19 the government has announced it will make 860000 pound compensation payment thats almost 70000 euros to families of Health Workers and social care staff who die fighting the outbreak after years of underfunding and now a severe lack of personal protective equipment the pandemic has laid bare the crisis within the u. K. s National Health system. And nor has he found that protects him from coronavirus dr assays munaf almost feels guilty every time a long. Hes an emergency doctor so he does have access to past not protective equipment or people. But supplies across the u. K. Are very limited than simply arent enough gowns for every doctor i want to go to get treated to. A conscious of what you said to you because of what box of supplies getting less and less of that so thats every time because they only have to merits you know we are in a high risk are 3 quarters of all u. K. Doctors say they dont have access to protective clothing quizes and masks are also in short supply some doctors are having to buy their own f f p 3 masks from the i y stores and from building that fence. And were also having to do things like make their own aprons out of rubbish bin bags to try to protect their closing wells theyre doing these high risk procedures over 100 medical staff doctors as well as nurses have already died from the virus on social media videos like this are being said hospital workers paying their last respects to a continent even before the crisis the u. K. Was short of over 40000 nurses staff are now under enormous pressure even very experienced nurses and pushed to the edge and we have a lot of newly qualified staff who only been in the job 6 months or one year and theyve really been pushed pushed to 2 to breaking point we are and already underfunded we need more doctors and nurses to work in the n. H. S. Even in normal times so at the moment we are above and beyond what we ever thought that we could be intense and working and were trying our best that we do need more starker we need more quick meant and that is a result of underfunding of the last decade and patients are suffering too. Hospitals are having to rush in supplies like oxygen or dialysis food for patients with kidney failure. To mourn of describe situations where older patients that might offend some intensive cant has been denied treatment whereas a few months ago people who were 65 people to get it you base your mentality but now you scratch your soul stretch it so trust that it would look just to you but if people look at 55 im rich i deemed. Care you did but i see you checked a lot. It wasnt full of question britains National Health service is facing its biggest emergency since its founding. That report from our correspondent there get lost and she joins us from london with more hype or get the u. K. Has just held a minute of silence to honor the frontline workers who have died from coal the one 900. 00 tell us more about that. Well that would have been a very moving moment i think for the whole country because many people really are so conscious about sacrifice really that Health Care Workers are bringing in this fight against the virus they know that their sacrifice in their own security for treating patients there are many posters in peoples windows which is a symbol a rainbow for for the n. H. S. To show the gratitude and to show the solidarity but also crucially inside the House Service there is a lot of anger as you would have gathered from their reports a lot of medical staff really angry with the government that they are not properly protected and this is going to come out later i think the impression i got is that a lot of medical staff are now biting their tongue they have so much to do in this fight against the virus but whenever the pressure eases theres going to be a lot of debate over how the staff has been treated in this crisis and that anger back at cons of the u. K. Has been dealing with us and i make for several weeks now about the problems for the n. H. S. Just seem to keep mounting why is that. Its really a picture of a Health Service that hasnt been resilient enough so everything at the moment has been put on hold there are almost no election for a siege almost nobody gets free fat cancer cancer Cancer Charities for example a warning that thousands of cancers every week are going undetected so basically everything had to stop in order to throw one of the resources at the pandemic and critics say that this is the result of underfunding particularly in the last decade where the country has seen a lot of austerity and cuts to Public Services as a result of the financial crisis so yes a huge debate as to whether the. Health Service Needs to be funded more properly in the future all right a lot of questions being direct to the government and Prime Minister Boris Johnson did return to public view for the 1st time on monday since he recovered from the coronavirus how important do you think that is as britain deals with a pandemic. Definitely very important it was a sense was johnson was missing that there was a void really at the center of government so important decisions really waiting for the Prime Minister most afford is about the lock down so we seeing other countries across the world starting to ease the lock down not so in the u. K. And the government so far has not explained what death thinking is what are the criteria really and when are they thinking of starting to ease the lock down and what steps are going to be taken so all of this is something that the Prime Minister will have to decide on now we can see he has been back and i think this minute of silence that we have seen today and also the announcement that the families of the n. H. S. Workers who have died will be compensated financially this i think is a mark that boys johnson is trying to make to say hes back and now its going to be a change of tone and change of these trying to influence the public mood and say well now i am back and im in control and things are moving forward why thank goodness reporting for us from london thank you very much. Now to some other stories making the news scientists at an officer of at the Oxford University institute are beginning mass human trials on a possible cold with 1000 vaccine the team plans to test the vaccine on more than 6000 people after successfully keeping monkeys infection free for 4 weeks the team hopes to have millions of doses available by september. You know war. Australia and new zealand have started relaxing their lock downs after 4 weeks of stay at home restrictions both countries have avoided high numbers of infections and deaths and new zealand this week declared it have a virus under control still social distancing measures remain in place. Johnston and me ya know its finally coffee time again new zealand took a 1st step towards normal life as the countrys businesses begin to resume their activities cafes and restaurants that sell takeaway food and drinks along with construction sites and beaches were allowed to reopen. New zealand was under a strict coronavirus lockdown since march 26th with most of the country shut down the measures seem to have contained the spread of the virus but authorities warn that the country is still not out of the woods is an ongoing basis there is not one point in time that this mission now yes we have done that in lockdown the goal now is to keep up so were now in the next phase of the battle and we are not done. In australia sydneys famous bondi beach reopened to swimmers and surfers after it was closed for 5 weeks people braved the cool autumn weather to dive in beach goers are left to swim and surf but not to sunbathe or linger the area has australias highest concentration of coronavirus cases last month police had to close the beach because people were congregating disregarding social distancing measures of thirtys hope that this time they will finally follow the rules. It is the 2nd day of the petersburg climate dialogue germanys initiative to discuss ways of combating Climate Change now due to cope with 19 the dialogue is taking place online but the pandemic is shaping the discussions in other ways too with Many Companies and even Industries Holding out for help there are growing calls on the government to attach Climate Friendly strings to aid for businesses. The Worlds Largest comic is gradually resuming production at its european facilities the coronavirus pandemic has cost folks billions and executives optimistic about the future. Theres no t. V. Here its the youre concerned that a car is not foremost on the minds of our potential customers right now. So wed welcome efforts by the government to create some incentives for consumers. Who could learn thats just the government assistance for the vehicle purchases didnt politicians want to phase out the Combustion Engine and wouldnt it be a good time to transition to a more eco friendly economy when company coffers are empty. On monday a Broad Spectrum of nearly 70 German Companies called for increased efforts to link stimulus programs with climate protection and they were not only those that would benefit from ambitious climate protection policies like Insurance Companies also traditional Industrial Enterprises like to sing cope and bya they hope the european economy will see a push to modernization and that could include a massive expansion if we knew a bill Energy Investment in challenging stations full and electric vehicles. Lets talk more about this with Stephen Beardsley from business hi stephen we know that the pent up mic is putting a condom use across the globe under pressure does that mean that Climate Change is no longer really a big priority like it was before the panic i think the question youre asking is basically this dilemma between the short term need to get economies going again and the long term goals that were already set out before the current of our spending and happen and that is achieving a low Carbon Economy especially in places like europe and germany where theyve already taken steps towards moving in that direction so how these 2 things conflict with one another its hard to say its not hard to imagine scenarios in which they would conflict and you already have the Auto Industry for example here in germany saying hey would be great if we could get premiums for purchases of cars the government can help us out with out they dont mean just electric cars they mean internal Combustion Engine cars now a long term goal of the German Government is to meet emissions standards in europe and to meet its own climate goals and that means fewer internal Combustion Engine cars another example might be industry which often complains about the expense of energy cost i imagine like steel producers for example these a ton of energy the cost here are high in germany because attached to the cost of energy is the cost to build out their ennobles network so if they say hey we need relief from these High Energy Cost to get back on our feet can you do something here but sensually someone might say well maybe this is where we can strike a way so you can imagine that these things could start to conflict with one another ok but to what extent is the German Government actually saying were going to provide you with aid but you might want to think about. Environmentally friendly practice not yet is the answer right now theyre focused on the short term how do we keep these businesses alive remember we put everything in an artificial coma here when it comes the economy the question is how do you keep it going and then how do you bring it back to life and so what theyve done are things like loan guarantees grants and Worker Protections none of those have come with Strings Attached becomes the environment were going to transition to a period where were looking at a longer term Recovery Period and how much money should be spent on recovery there you might see some options for investments some options for trying to encourage Certain Industries certain sectors to really come about that would help the economy in the long term and also help meet these long term goals that germany and other countries have undertaken look at some of those projects green projects that could benefit from this invest in those projects going back to industry for example green industry you often hear about smelting ovens for example a lot of these Big Industrial processes that are so in are g. Intensive there is not quite an industry here to remake that machinery in a more low carbon way if that industry sector could get support for example that maybe you build up the sector to create that and then also it could start to expand and start to have global sales for example so you basically provide the money to create a sector that benefits Carbon Emissions here in germany and then it has a potential market elsewhere in the world that kind of stuff also building efficiency standards mobility perhaps supporting building out more rail things like that you know potentially you have right here a clear example in times of the German Government is about to step in the tons and to help bail it out could be a 25 percent stakeholder it could potentially do some major things there if it wanted to i would be surprised but in theory you might see some people actually pushing pretty hard for that but in theory it could do something very interesting as Stephen Gately from business thank you very much for joining us. Now a new report says that at the end of 29 t. Know Record Number of people were living in temporary shelters inside their own countries 50000000 people were internally displaced either by extreme weather events Natural Disasters or war and civil conflict most of them ended up in overcrowded camps now the pen demick means they are more vulnerable than ever somalia is in the grip of a years long drought animals perish in plain sight the soil has dried up and long ago the fertile topsoil blew away there is little hope of farming. Of course im hungry that is not just me my whole family and my kids its affecting all of us here know it the only chance for this tribe travel hundreds of kilometers to camps where they can survive but only with outside help its the story of many internally displaced people those forced to move within their own countries. Globally almost 25000000 had to leave their homes and 29000 because of Natural Disasters add to that 8 and a half 1000000 people forced to flee violent conflicts. And it is conflict like the civil war in the democratic republic of congo that accounts for a vast majority of internally displaced people going back decades where do they go camps like this one long considered a safe haven but 20 twentieths Coronavirus Crisis is adding another layer of disruption and desperation. We can speak now to be not decides the head of policy and research at the internal Displacement Monitoring Center center in geneva you know thank you for joining us we sing a lecture number of internally displaced people what would you say is the biggest driving factor. Thank you very much for having us and its a sad record that were recording this year with as you said in your report right now over 50000000 people displaced at the end of the year and the main drivers again and again that we are underlying but then the triggers are the conflicts and disasters that weve seen over the last year in those 3 quarters of own huge a placement instances where people are was to see their homes i read any instances of Natural Disaster and then one that is conflict and youve already mentioned that here the but we also have long going conflicts in syria understand that all when you fight in west africa and countries like turkey now asan mali which is a vent or and were also the middle of a Global Pandemic right now what is that meant for internally displaced people. Indeed there are very worried because of course internally displaced people are impacted in many ways with the pandemic on the 100 directing is a real danger now in a number of countries where we have large numbers of i. D. P. s of internally displaced people and new cases of the chronic virus and syria but also nigeria and iraq a real danger for them to actually become as a place again out of camp out old hold in those and often urban opponents settlements as you can imagine is a really crowded condition people are living in. Hygiene is impossible social distancing of them possible and on top of that theyre losing their basic income and many instances as a new labor is not available so these people are getting want desperate but also in direct through the restrictions that we now see taking place to come bastareaud not border closures but also restrictions to ability internally to place the people who are full on to being vulnerable to the impact that weve seen again and after. A lot of closures between countries that you know and you jaren looking on the where people live actually and the local violence and property aboard and the colonels anymore you know were talking about astonishing numbers of people who are displaced in their own countries why is this not on governments radar says it because were not talking about refugee flows but rather people who are still within their home countries. I dont think its increasingly and thats a promising part on governments radar as indeed this year was the year where a High Level Panel on internal displacement had been formed and theyre really concerned that the efforts and the momentum that this has started as do as it is becoming overshadowed by the pandemic. I think another issue go why internal displacement has been under the radar to some extent local level and then because its been seen as the responsibility of National Governments its im not im thing that the International Community would really and much and let me see more and more that it is a global issue. And is no one and it was an issue that has. Lots of me and. All right have to leave it there been a decide from the internal Displacement Monitoring Center in geneva thank you for joining us thank you our children all around the world are having to deal with the pen demick but in some countries like egypt Public Information about tackling the virus doesnt always filter through to the youngest and poorest in society and track much less our student who is that turned his acting skills into a way to educate. A few last practice moves before slipping into character transitioning from engineering student to clown has become 2nd nature for ahmed nazar. For 5 years now the 22 year old has been performing as a mine at events as a side to bolster his studies but the corona crisis put into that now often it has found a new angle hes taking his act to cairos poorest neighborhoods to educate children about the virus. And its our duty to educate kids because they dont really have access to information while they watch cartoons on t. V. Theyre not that interested in whats going on in the world. Op ed is setting off to cairos city of the dead its a good hours drive away but since the universities are closed hes got plenty of time on his hands the corona crisis hasnt visibly impacted cairos traffic packed mini buses as millions of people commute to work through busy streets they all need money to survive while egypts official infection rates are quite low so are the rates of testing the actual number of infections could be much higher many here simply hope they wont be infected especially kids. Sense that i can change the awareness and behavior of the kids that makes me happy. Some 1500000 people live in cairo city of the dead a large portion of them below the poverty line and many of these poor children dont yet know about social distancing hygiene and masks. Its these kids that are spent wants to help he talks to them and gives them tips keep your distance or even better stay home wash your hands wear masks if possible at all times conventional wisdom but many here are hearing it for the 1st time. This. Kind of fact i like what he said ill try to do what he said. Ok. Yes im scared. Were not allowed to touch each other anymore than a lot of them if we touch someone with corona our whole family could get infected anyway. A few final relaxing pantomime practice exercises. Doesnt want to leave the kids worried or in panic it might seem like a lot of effort for just 15 kids but often hopes they will pass on what theyve learned to others in the community. Or the current a virus lockdown has sometimes meant loneliness especially for the elderly who are among the most vulnerable in this pandemic they are cut off from friends and relatives they havent seen in months but one belgian businessman has come up with an idea thats taken some of the distance out of social distancing. Has been waiting for this moment for 2 months her husband is in this brussels care home the last time he saw him was in early march now theyre reunited for a few precious minutes. Then this is great isnt it its great. I think i have to stay here. With. The idea of using cranes to hold people closer together it was a brainchild of tristen fandom bosch hes a manager of the company that rents out the platforms the Window Cleaning and fruit picking. Somebody waving at his mother 2 or 3 floors up and i thought given that we have a serious fall in business we can live up to the window with our machines. And thats what we did. 84 year old clementine says that the crane right has given her at least a semblance of intimacy with her loved one. I am very happy the time could speak to him that closely its great i really appreciate this initiative he is up to see the real me. Now clementines back down on solid ground and her husband still in lockdown even so just a few minutes with him have made a huge difference. Thank. You. Now organizers of the postponed to Tokyo Olympics say the games will be canceled if they cant take place next year and the olympics were moved to july 2021 because of the pandemic now the president of tokyos organizing Committee Says another postponement wont be an option if the virus is still a threat next year scientists in japan have warned it will be difficult to hold the games unless a vaccine is found.
