Literary director of the library of Congress Welcome to the National Book festival this is a very special program for me the only one at the festival that doesnt necessarily have an author or a book we are discussing we are discussing festivals themselves in the way we have had to reinvent them in these very interesting days throughout the world on a global stage in which we are reinventing a lot of things in a virtual mode this is something everybody on the panel is doing or has done and i thought it would be fun to talk about the ways in which we can and cannot do it the ways that are frightening and pleasing and in some ways redemptive for audiences who have grown larger and better able to join us and with us today i have a tremendously Wonderful Group of colleagues, friends from around the world we have christine who is the International Executive director. And the wonderful and illustrious Peter Florence joining us the cofounder of britains hay festival and the director. Welcome to all of you. Thank you for joining us. I will ask you one by one to tell us where you are and what your relationship is now and what the festival has done want to tell us your role and the history of traditional and how you have gone from the traditional festival into virtual starting with christina. I am the director of a festival all the festivals all over the world for someone else to develop doing and culture and the human context whether mexico or columbia and then we had conversations but that which comes down to whether people it is challenging for us. And then in mexico in september and imperial one in peru to have the big names and then to negotiate all the contracts and agreements with the partners whether with english or subtitles but firm mexico and another asset and another asset and another asset but then people who have the hardware to get there so there are many here. Tell us about that experience and what you learned and your role and how you put it so quickly to the new format. Guest i think adrenaline hoped a great deal. The lockdown was one week before we were to event on announce our program. And had three weeks to compress and concentrate that to an Event Production company and for delivery digital platform. So with everything we did into the absolute delight wellbeing global and local readers from 180 countries participate in the digital version of a festival so there is a global reach and to alaska watching the events at the same time.
