In covering the 2020 race as well as i will wisconsin over the last couple of years, most recently in april, reporting a primary election that happened during the covered pandemic. Before wisconsin, your list daniel providing background in the dynamic. Donald trump has won the state of wisconsin. This is a state like clinton hasnt even visited since the Democratic Convention over the summer. In 2016, it was the crystallizing moment that things had gone south for democrats. 22004, President Trump was the first republican to win the state and more than 30 years is all types of different activists across the groups that realized they had become complacent that year. Something the groups say they are doing again. When i spoke with him precovid, he spoke with not endorse them to prove it. The volunteers working together on the infrastructure are waiting so whoever wins the 20 contest will be able to come in and inherit a mobilized organized motivated, highly driven group of volunteers. Wisconsin used to be a power center of republican body but taken some big things. Scott walker will upandcoming party leader on. Paul rand in the hospital gone. He retired. Ive given this job everything i have. Welcome to the election. Earlier this year, a conservative state lost his seat by more than 100,000 votes. Immigrants are excited about the the swing states the democratic grounds. Demographics, compared to pennsylvania and wisconsin, michigan has more white people. Voters without a College Degree in wisconsin, its 55 . About ten points higher than the other two. Both of those groups largely make up President Trumps votes. 2018, democrats won all statewide. The Gubernatorial Race by one points. By comparison, the one governorship by double digits michigan and pennsylvania. Democrats less room for error. One of the big key areas for both major parties is going to be how they perform. They are primarily white and generally the most republican. Then rob can support their but not in the same way the we feel another suburbs of the country. Paul averages show joe biden six points ahead of donald trump which is basically where Hillary Clinton was at the same time in early august 2015. He spent a good amount of time in wisconsin over the last several years, Hillary Clinton famously havent made it to wisconsin and her failure to complain is believed to have caused her to decided than 23000 books. We talk about 2016, wisconsin lost it seemed like it was a bitter pill to swallow. Thats exactly right. If there is one state, it is wisconsin. They should have been showing up the base in the midwest in places like arizona. National democrats physically park themselves in wisconsin and never left. It is paying off, we seen democrats over the midterms and ended scott walker and in april when he thought it was a Supreme Court race, its a positive thing like november, their book by mail far from what republicans were able to pull off in april. Its typically essential to your hopes of winning the state, they voted for President Trump in 2016 but they were wild about it. He seems to be flagging there again this year. How much of a problem is that for his chance of winning the state . It is a big problem. It is a troubling sign for trump. He needs to run up the margins and around green bay and milwaukee including the counties of waukesha and washington, these are reservoirs where if youre running statewide is a real organ in wisconsin, you dont just win, you have to dominate them to offset madison and milwaukee. Republican support here has been softening an independent will be pivotal in the selection trending towards joe biden. Heres a surprising step. You probably already know it but its still interesting anyway. There were 206 counties are donald trump in 2016 after twice voting for barack obama. Of those counties, 23 were in wisconsin. Only one state, iowa, had more of these socalled pivot counties. How important do you think these places were to Donald Trumps victory in wisconsin . What explains the appeal of these places . It was critical. Many of these counties are located in the southwestern part of the state, they are made up of bluecollar, were normally quite voters there feeling left behind by the economy. Some of the appeal was a he promises washington to fix the economy. Democrats are messaging hard in the fact that so many have gone out of business in the state over the last several years. One thing thats really different, joe biden is largely undefined by voters. So hes not offensive to them and its an opening for democrats. Hes not offensive to them. I told the campaign. [laughter] lets do a lightning round of questions. Heres the first one. If theres one thing Trump Campaign must to do to win wisconsin, what would it be . I think theres probably two things, trump must do exceptionally well in rural parts of the state. 63 of the vote dominated. The second thing is, he needs to dive up the margins in those counties and went back independence who are starting to drift away. So let me ask you the same question, what about the Biden Campaign . What does biden have to do to win back the vote . Uncle joe needs to win big margins out of milwaukee and home to madison mike university of wisconsin. On election night, i watch to see if he can call back some of the obama trump counties and i think it is important for biden to hold down terms margins in the suburbs. That shouldnt be too hard given the list toward trump but if biden is perceived as breaking to the left or to liberal, its not going to help his cause in the conservative counties you mentioned earlier. With that, thank you all for joining us. We have three more states to go. Join us during our National Convention as we look at arizona, florida and north carolina. Thanks for watching and take care. Good morning. Senior Technology Reporter of political. Democratic National Convention made history this week as the first u. S. President ial nominee Convention Held completely virtually. Five months into the pandemic, the Democratic Party forced to reimagine a convened Party Leaders and reach leaders in a virtual format. Its not too much to say this month nominating convention for the white house goes right to the internet. Im supposed to be joined by kate and mitchell with pfizer to the digital for the campaign of the democratic nominee joe biden. She the Biden Campaign i think about everything from organizing to Online Fundraising using social media and for joe biden next president. All the conversation using the the nc political. Lets get started. Thanks for having me. You joined the campaign in may but lets jump back to the primaries. The Biden Campaign developed a bit of a reputation and then the pandemic hit and then there are famous videos of biden. At the time, there was unsolicited advice about the improvement. What did the campaign learn . The Biden Campaign became the presumptive nominee, there were a lot of challenges with the pandemic happening around that time, this was something i was experiencing at the same time before i joined the campaign. Theres much less about what they were and work doing and more about everyone figuring out how to do fully online and virtual. When i came on board, beginning of may, i met around 20, 25 very talented, very tired digital staffers, i started working with the digital director for the Biden Campaign and he was more than ready to hire. From there, we started building a plan, where are the areas we want to build . Fastforward to august in our digital team is now over 100 people. Close to 150 so we have completely changed the game. Go ahead. That was all. When you compare those numbers, 25 people to 150, how does it compare to past campaigns . Where we are now is pretty comfortable to hillary, i saw the obama 2012 campaign, similar to where we were in 2012 as well. I think the biggest thing you get when you hire and scale which is something that does a number of roles, instead of everyone having one main job and a few side puzzles, they can focus on social platforms, books dedicated to what are the analytics to drive the audience on each individual social platform, for fundraising. There a lot of fundraising platforms beyond the traditional platforms of the email list for social media, folks can focus on that all the time. Fundraising numbers the last few months does it make a bit of a different. What is one big moment they had, senator cammalleris Kamala Harris as the vp last week. The email announced her, he fundraising, i dont know much online but 25 million in the first 24 hours which is pretty striking. We started planning for the rollout of her, we knew it would be a woman so who she would be, we did not know we started the rollout late june, early july. As we went on, what we did was fill out what i believe is an unprecedented amount of context prayer preparing for finalists on the vp list. So for the email social media ad logo, that you saw us rollout for Kamala Harris, we had that times 11. Visual director talking about them doing that before. First it was an incredible thing to be part of an incredible to see the team step up and be prepared. There were rapid responses and just being prepared for any scenario, that was one. We were drawn in from the start, how do we make this Digital First . We are going to have a meeting, bring your best idea and that was where the idea came from to film vp biden calling the nominee. And offering her the job in discussing that, we realized what is actually sound like or feel like . He called up and asked. We are going to the call or video that went on twitter and other social platforms offering the spot. When we were getting ready for this interview, we talked about joe biden having a certain voice both online and off. He doesnt dunk on people, how do you go about building a social Media Presence around a candidate like joe biden who isnt a natural social media person . For us, our job to take his voice and put it online. We want to show online what joe biden will look like and that means showing he provides leadership, the warmth he naturally exudes day today and interacting and showing empathy which is such a stark contract. Contrast. Joe biden doesnt go around jumping on folks in their life every day so they do that online. The best version of him is what we want for the day. One of the things, a lot of his supporters are of and tumble on the internet, how do you think about competing with that . We are fully aware making folks angry or outraged is a powerful motivator. It helps move things online. Weve seen that for the past four years. In the beginning, it was clear we wouldnt take that path. Were going to show the fun side of joe biden, more about him, his relationship with doctor joe biden. For us, it wasnt even a question of, he would rather take less engagement on some days without having to stoop to that level of playing that same game. What weve seen, is an enormous desire for the content, folks really like that. Look at our videos in the last month or two, you can see on the internet pretty well. You mentioned the fun side of joe biden, are you aware of the names . He is. He loves it. He is in that. He knows about the onion version of joe biden, whats funny is that theres a video of him he likes those, it is a team. He simply chosen to lean in because it is part of who he is. Right now, were 75 days out, fixated on a handful of swing states, wisconsin, arizona, michigan. Joe biden needs to win some of those to be president. You cant knock on doors in the suburbs of detroit the ones you might have, how do you think about using digital to target folks specifically in those swing states . This is something we are working on all day everyday to reach these voters. How we are doing this is in the last few months, weve started additional organizing teams, its very robust. Its focused on determining organizing for taking our volunteers who dont live in those states, training them up and having them call or text in to help bring other volunteers on board so really we did a lot of thinking of what it looks like in the time of covid in battleground states, we are not going to knock on doors. The past, the reason we have so much in the past is weve had conversations with voters changed their mind. It motivates them to vote. For us, it is the same organizing best practices were still using but the tools are different. For us, some call in may. The last thing, in our battleground states, we are really intentional about pulling out our volunteer efforts and that means in every state, people are living differently right now depending on the governing so were building out a volunteer army in these battleground states, its critical not just for persuasion but also Voter Education which will look different than any other election before this. We talk about the swing states, what about targeting the coalition that joe biden will need to turn out in order to win . Loosing the lincoln project, how do you think about connecting them into the pool . Anyone who wants to help elect them to see donald trump, they are welcome to see the online and will ask them to make calls and participate in the broader context. How it looks like in the states is we actually have coalition staffers working towards organizing digital organizing staff to make sure we are creating the Safe Community online together. How do we create or recreate that space online . For us, all of the work is being done so we are creating space working closely with our Coalitions Team to make sure we are creating a culturally competent that makes sense to the community and we are organizing what is primarily happening online. Much in the same way we would if this was a general election. Looking forward to the election day. Think weve already seen happen is manipulated media socially. Some of that related to joe biden, theres a video that went around was made to look like is maybe endorsing donald trump. What is the plan for dealing with that . [inaudible] what is new, we are working closely with the dnc, they have a whole team and we monitor closely emerging trends thats online, they service them to the Biden Campaign, then campaign snow, what are the emerging narratives . They work closely with the social Media Company to try to remove the ones that braced the guidelines of the social media platform. The second thing we are doing is working on positive content, that is disinformation, how are we empowering supporters to share that content . Especially in battleground states, we are doing interesting work, its not like the joe biden, that is one of the political applicants already exist . Saying hello and introducing themselves to the administrators of this group and helping organize their communities to help spread positive words and content about joe biden and Kamala Harris. Of the Community Groups related i dont intend to be political, county political groups, i think one in wiscons wisconsin, i think scott walker is active in wisconsin and working with them in the partnership and how to get the word out. Okay. Thank you for joining us. It was great having you. What stood out to me, how much of the next 75 days so critical. We will keep a close eye on that.
