One was a great compelling orator one was crude but good with tweeting nonetheless. But as soon as you start to drill a little deeper and the remarkable similarity. Both planes speakers and alpha males both had the acrimonious relationship with the media the establishment of their own Political Party. Both had predecessors that were considered very weak Winston Churchill had Neville Chamberlain and trump had barack obama. There are incredible parallels between the time and then and thats why i wrote the book. When we look back at churchill in history we picture him as beloved. It certainly wasnt that way. And then someone that decided to do things a different way. And those to be in the falls for a long time. And with those British National newspapers in the early 19 forties and if those are British National newspapers you may thank you are reading the Washington Post or New York Times so similar are the criticisms and the accusations that both man like judgment or dont listen to anybody around them and i got instinct and to be too optimistic all the things weve heard about donald trump the criticism leveled at Winston Churchill. Both were party switchers . They were. Yes Winston Churchill really was a lifelong politician with a stint in the military donald trump of course was a businessman they both had different backgrounds but they were fluid in the early years with their political affiliations that they had but what both men had in common way is a lot of the average everyday ordinary person and they had sentiments that resonated with the people of the times in the movie that darkest hour a couple years ago many of the reviewers wed remake member the scene where Winston Churchill goes into the two men he visits with the regular commuters and he had that great relationship with the average person and again rather surprisingly Winston Churchill was born into money and in the same way donald trump was us businessman through what he does and very relatable donald trump junk food Winston Churchill obviously ate too much like we do on occasion these are all things that we all look at as humans to say a few of the things that i do hes pretty normal. Host you also mention the times were similar . Certainly what we are going through with the invisible enemy with that phrase that President Trump used to battle the coronavirus with so with those wartime circumstances right now and again we saw new york mayor diblasio to come out and accuse the president with respect to the coronavirus a lot of that is similar but that fear was on the outside. Churchill of course was fighting the axis powers not see tyranny and that spike is a culture war battle for values and of course he does have enemies as well in terms of china and iran and others but really most people see donald trump most major war to be domestic those elements of the media the democrats and others. Host your subtitle defenders of western civilization what do you mean how do they defend it. I think western civilization has a set of values and they came to develop those in the englishspeaking world by the anglosphere western countries with a lot of influence on values and models and most of europe those kind of countries not including obviously china over large parts of the middle east so that western civilization in terms of net are intensely patriotic they love the values the traditions that existed in the nation churchill was a big supporter of the values that were england and donald trump is a big supporter of how america has traditionally been with his Campaign Slogan make America Great again. So i think both men went to ensure of what has happened in the country stays that way as a throw back to earlier eras that people find comfortable supposed then i think believed in the west end in western civilization and in the values in the believe system in the models that are contained within the west. Given your accent how long if you been familiar with friends on dash Winston Churchill . My father is a massive Winston Churchill fan when i was just eight years old he gave me a book of Winston Churchill speeches and instructed me to reread as many times as i possibly could because theres no one better to learn from with the speechwriting and giving. So when i was in the eighth grade one of my best friends to this day came and gave me a copy of the art of the deal that is where my lifelong adoration began with President Trump. I was familiar with both men early given the united kingdoms relationship with australia someone that features prominently in history class. Although i will say that americans are very familiar and its rather atypical its fair to say most dont take that much of an interest in terms of leaders because america is so powerful cares whats going on elsewhere. That was an exception for a variety of reasons number one his mother was american and number two the only person in the history of the United States and number three the most famous point of all the point that i make repeated the and then to conceal his true self. And then probably individualistic. And with that political culture donald trump is a maverick but and in england it was really remarkable for someone like Winston Churchill to come along and that has timidity in moderation. And then to come out of nowhere with no qualms what anyone has to say that is truly unique. Churchill never visited australia . Thats correct. I dont know why. Its a long way to go. He comes to the United States many times he came and delivered his famous iron curtain address in fulton missouri i encourage your viewers to visit the Churchill Museum there i love its one of my Favorite Places in the world and is on the train with the president of the United States. If he could be born again anywhere, he would choose to be in the United States of america of course it would never be a quote without the backhand complement where he said although i for some of your customs chief among them being your refusal to drink during meals and that lines up with his other famous quotes what i speak to audiences all across the country that america always does the right thing after exhausting every other option. Host you have a similarity to churchill when it comes to the us . Thats something that always bonded me with churchill. He was a huge americana fan. He loved everything about the United States of america really and even in the darkest days he would constantly be assuring people around him , america will be involved in everything will be okay. He did have disbelief in america sure his mother had a lot to do with that and his own instincts he was an educated man to see something in the United States the temperament was probably his personality to fit more in with the color and flamboyance and volume of america as opposed with the more relaxed british. Is it fair to say this is a departure from your previous book . Very much so. I wanted to write something that gave a Historical Perspective on the Trump Presidency because so much has been shared and written from all sides about donald trump and his administration but very little so far and that is understandable considering we are only three and a half years in to his time in office. We dont know what will happen november this year i remain sanguine about his prospects nobody has really written what donald trump will look like in history and i found that to be a rather interesting proposition and one that i decided to explore we did in depth three years ago now i was on the trump train from day number one when we rode down the escalator and from reading the art of the deal i felt with the environment that existed in america at the time that a noble politician no matter how articulate or how well presented wouldnt cut it and that america really needed a sledgehammer of sorts to change things and ultimately to be accurate with that that was as good fortune as well as obviously some good judgment there at the time. Ive always been a big trump guy and ultimately as time goes on he will be very much of a van gogh type of president that comes from the artist who while he was alive he wasnt considered that much with his artwork then after he died he came into fashion the same way history will look kindly on donald trump and what he is doing right now and the first level of acrimony in many cases with the hatred that so many had for him i dont think that will be the case in a couple of decades from now and the claim that i make in my book will be the first to concede it is remarkably bold that we are only 20 years into this century that i do think if he does get elected another four years that he will have an impact of such magnitude the greatest speaker of this century that i believe churchill was of the 20th. Host what was your Research Process . We went and looked at media at the time all of the churchill books written whether biographies or his own writing writings, we took a deep dive into his past and his family and what makes Winston Churchill Winston Churchill ever looked at all his speeches including donald trump and in back of the book we chose what i consider to be the five best speeches of both men and leaders and that will be a good resource for anyone who picks up the book. We tried to get men as we codified at everything we could what made them what they were what makes them the leaders they are in the Research Process both men failed a lot as well with the passage of time and then to focus on and successes one of the most epic failures that churchill had was the 25th of april with the First World War and that is australia and folklore that was a really bad decision that he made with mass casualties is news on new zealand and australia and remarked that day every year with mixed feelings. Donald trump of course while he had Great Success as a businessman like any entrepreneur whether introduced in the 1980s the things that didnt work out the way they would have hoped that what is really interesting when i researched and looked into both of them it was very clear including those failures actually made them perfect for the moment they found themselves so almost everything that occurred in their life there are good and bad and upbringing and experiences and relations including the personality traits everything made them ideal. Host you keep saying we. Who was on your writing team . People help me with research and edit i like to do as much as i can buy myself but i certainly had assistance because what was needed for a book like this is simply something i could not do now with quarantine like now i would have lots of time to do different things. Did you find yourself traveling to these sites are can you find everything you need online . Now you have the encyclopedia in the pocket and traveled back to visit the museum there going to the churchill war rooms but knowing that this would be the upcoming book to go there last july and spend some time there and photographed in case i was missing anything and the ideas that i have i didnt implement because everything changed in the last couple of months with covid19 i was planning on a book tour that would be a precise replica of churchills speaking tour when he came to the United States and if you go to the war room there is a map of the us it shows you precisely where there was a big long cylindrical shape and i want to mirror that but unfortunately that has been put on hold. Host published by Simon Schuster are you doing any kind of a book tour otherwise . Doing a lot of stuff just like this occasionally i do somebody and stuff as well but for the most part private gatherings and im hoping in the next four or six weeks things will open up a little bit and we can get some size crowds and get onto it. I think this is very much a book that does deserve that readers will enjoy. Host you mention the speeches in the back of the book. What is your favorite churchill and trump speech . The one that is that he gave in poland. That was well received by the media one of the only times in his presidency were that has happened to move rather eloquently on freedom and values that seems to be when he is at his political. Pinnacle and then just listening to that i used to have an ipod and i had all of churchills speeches i believe obama did also that was a gift the queen gave him a few years back. Whenever i used to listen to that all the time. Just the way that is delivered and how effective of those words i can only imagine what that would be like hearing that in those days. Host where are you based now and what is your Organization Called . Im in the dallasfort worth area in texas thats right decided to hang my boots for a variety of reasons. It is in the middle of the country i dont spend that much time here but it was important to be close to be wherever i have to be. My organization is Flag Foundation for liberty of american greatness. Host we know that President Trump admires Winston Churchill. With the reverse be true . I think both men are dead on it would be interesting to see donald trump in one hand and churchill and the other and then some chicken wings or Something Like that. Both men would be sitting down next to each other and speaking rather unfavorable turns about the media and journalists and the Political Party i think they word have a very interesting conversation to be a fly on that wall. Host the newest book trump and churchill defenders of western civilization thank you for spending a few minutes with us on book tv. Always a pleasure
