Today were in the senate floor at a time when once again, where attempting as a country to reconcile things that shouldve been reconciled long ago. The deaths of george floyd, breanna taylor, and others. Shocked the country, outrage do country, and three of them in a very short period of time. Front of again this division we have in our country. We look at the country and particularly we look at Law Enforcement in two different ways. The discussion i had with my sons, is different than the discussion of many of my africanamericanfa friends at, infectious virus i know all of my africanamerican friends in america talk to me about this app with their sons, with my cell i would say if you have trouble, but for Police Officer trated that is not the Police Officer discussion that africanamerican fathers often have with their sons. That discussion goes more like, picked up by the police, do exactly what you areet told untl i get there and then we will straighten it out once i get hathere. That is the two views of what happens. And we see in all these cases, some reasonably that those concerns are absolute illegitimate. Because of that i think there is a wide support for the protest going on around the country. In their leadership is taken out today on the republican side. Everybody with great i think understanding and emotion and empathy talked about the importance of peaceful protests as we see these things having have had happened. And the problem is we have protests peacefully during the day they turn into violence and chaos as night. The peaceful protests do not become a cover for violent activity. When my good friends told me today there has never been a peaceful protest planned for the nighttime rated nighttime is not the time for peaceful protests marching. It might be the time for candlelight visual but not time for peaceful protests of what we see at night, people going there front part of the daytime processing activity, or were there in the daytime so they could transition to violence and looting at night, is absolutely outrageous. Absolutely unacceptable and we saw the George Floyds brother yesterday go to a place where his brother died and say, if i am not looting and and if i am not rioting and destroying other peoples property, why would you be doing that. I have lost my brother and i am not trying to destroy myes neighborhood because i lost my brother. Not trying to destroy his neighborhood because my brother is gone. But we see activities happen that are just unacceptable on all fronts. Last night in st. Louis we had a four Police Officer shot in the line of duty and what some time earlier in the day had been anticipated that the city justice center, there would be a planned violent activity. Dont manage to shootdo for pole officers unless youre thinking about it. Normally thinking about it in advance. That is what happened. Un fortunately, those loans were all survivable. We talked to people in the Police Department in st. Louis and they said that they had six other events last night where police were shot at during the course of the night and we need to realize that the Police Officers who were working in the National Guardsmen and women who are working hard out there risking their lives trying to protect others we need to realize that when they go to work every day, the members of theiram family have every reason to be concerned all day, every day of what might happen. He just walks behind them in the car or on the streets, and their life has ended. And then we see the horrifying image of george floyd murder, we have the same fear for people in that situation and the people that they love. In fact no one should live in our society not the Law Enforcement officers not their families, not Peaceful Protesters or people who have violated the law but not with the result we saw no arrest you can decide to be the punishing officer as well as the arresting officer. Those in power those in power should set an example i talked in kansas city with rick smith bill have a unity march with other leaders in the community and protesters in the community. Marching along along with the protesters with chief smith and other officers and other elected leaders mentally to resolve this. I also think the president having some experience with this particular topic, the Justice Department needs to reinstate their full review of the department with the practice that something theyve walked away from practice review by the Justice Department entered into a descent decree how they would focus one oflo the three asked for the review, st. Louis county the city of ferguson st. Louis city all benefited from that review reviewing a number ofou officers is often not enough. I am encouraging the department of justice to get back to having one of the options on the table. A full review by the Civil Rights Division or some other division depending on the n circumstances not only the procedure of the department may have fallen into. We cannot cant continue to over and over again have the same thing happen as we as a society try to grapple with the same exact problem. This is not a new problem, it is long past the time we should have figured out how to deal with it. If departments need help in deciding how to deal with that thats whether it st. Louis or baltimore the Justice Department has shown success the look at that the three incidents i mentioned today its time to move forward, its well past time of const engine confidence in the subserve in Law Enforcement and public assistance of all kinds. Theyve appreciation and respect that we should have for them. And of course, that is a contract away your earn that respect. You also get that respect when you earned it as well over 99. 9 as i would yield the floor. First he said i cant breathe. Then he caught called out mama for his late mother. Last monday, in broad daylight, george floyd was slowly, publicly killed by someone who is responsible to protect he has rightfully been fired spent three minutes ignoring his cries ofai
