And covering topics facial recognition computer security, and online harassment. Tonight were going to discuss joannes new book, its called a poetic and internet or that will resonate deeply with anyone. Never cynical, commercialization of the Digital World and insightful ways. Revealing what has been stolen and what possibilities may be recovered. The world unites, in this book. Please to host this event here. Please join me in welcoming joanne and kendra. [applause]. Joanne i have a really brief reading that i wanted to do. [background sounds]. Heres a short passage. This is in a chapter called sharing. Around the time of the first iphone launch, in 2007, it was possible if unwise to talk about the underdog. An appropriation own narrative. A holdover since estate inspired and tomorrow commercial featuring yvonne racing to attack his brother with a sledgehammer. In 2007, apple was right here 67 of 14 global 500. And it was ninth in the list. And halfway, with noble. And with the iphone, in 2010, apple pulled in the 40 million by 2014, 170 million. The figure is north of 200 million new apple phones each year. The company any for its design first approach product was also universally acclaimed gadget. Both in function and in the 21st century, the iphone is gorgeous intuitive in a supposedly handled like an acquaintance. People would learn about loss of human life some associated with the iphones creation. It was too expensive. On january 9, 2007, steve jobs announced the future of the times. The iphones nearly paralleled baraka obamas years in the white house. In 2008, obama left the office and january 20, 1710 years after steve jobs and housing. The founders about their b b and overcome a work washington dc for obamas inauguration. Rafting in very different accommodations, Upscale Hotel room, respectively and independently talked about the experience of the moment. The spark from crystallized. The corresponding timeline of obama in the iphone, are abundant passage for future historians. Plus dont forget the meanwhile is a great session and a lot of real people. Fabulous magic phones and in 2010 or 2011, see michael of the people who work for the estimate most had iphones but some androids phone to read or maybe its the other way around. There was very often, the iphone became common in everyday like eyeglasses but it for a long while. Past the point of actually being new. Apples crowning achievement hundred of the curious reality. Ten years after the phone had shown printed they still talked about it like a new creation. The changes occurred in little icon boxes a little iphone screens. The changes happened with people pretty users changed while the hardware for the most part not. There moment but i will pause and reflect on how powerful and world changing the iphone has been printed by time have been to observe someone at a Grocery Store using face time to talk to a friend in american sign language. Before the iphone, people texted from clamshells and chocolate bars approximations. But as contraptions they got the job done. In 2005, effective the slickest device from the tmobile online store which came free with a twoyear commitment. But now i remember that famous flip, status roles and an old toaster oven. It was like a power tool. The hand trembled a little bit when i press the button to take a photo. The battery compressed images, like finger paints on a postage stamp. I dont think i ever bothered to upload any of the pictures in my computer. But the phone seemed good enough because i didnt think had been better. Infant irai wanted a new phone. It would cost 500. In still another to peer commitments. Dissent emails keep papers from blowing off my desk. What printed i felt the difference,. [laughter]. [laughter]. That is too funny. [laughter]. I thought the difference between clamshell and iphone was like the difference between economy and firstclass. That autumn i signed up and i was with a local start upgraded through several models and multiple contract renewals, it is been my and popular tote bags ever since printed and the quality contradict feelings of trust. Healthy iphone so gently at first. Like applying eyeshadow with my fingertip. Slightest touch. What else could people touch with such care. I started to go to bed with it. It became a paperweight on a pillow and then it seamlessly integrated with my daily life. So now i think of it scarcely. The same way that i dont think about my forget that is on my plate. It became more immediate with the iphone for the world surrounding me in my personal life was less private and less urgent than it was in a moment. I find myself bumping into strangers. I was likely to those landmarks in the city and i never got bored waiting for a train no longer felt alone when waiting for a train. I always had something to do. My focus on the screen could keep the vultures abbaye. I was never alone. Even when i wasnt using the phone to talk printed i was never alone. It was always this one little window in between my phone. [applause]. Host i am so excited to be in conversation with you. I really loved and i am kind of thrilled to get to ask you questions about it. And with that, since you unluckily decided to put me appear with you. I will actually asked my first question this trick going to the second. You chose the title for this book in the way defined which i cant do justice to but i will try. In the book itself is working can be waiting room for communication in brief delay printed like that brutal all dollar, a moment to pause and prepare oneself for exchange with others pretty to get ones deep breath before plunging into the network. An amplification of identity to be reading or work or research or just for simply curiosity. Im curious, what brought you to choose that as sort of the title for the book, the money metaphor way hoping gauging with the internet in the book. Can talk a little bit about that back. Joanne takes kendra. It seemed like the most best title. My process of internet use is very much being the wallflower on the social networks. And the thing that makes internet unusual though is that the wallflower, people see you sending the quarter and you typically would be the pre good people cant necessarily see you watching them and i think is one of those things that it has to do with the element that makes interaction online somewhat unusual from physical world interactions. And sometimes because we take for granted how much our communication is woven into our daily lives. The physical and digital toll world interactions that will make clear that title. Kendra so interacting with the internet, since you wrote a book about aggie to su, are there other specific places online that you choose these sort of consider yourself primarily well where are you working. Joanne i spent a lot of time thinking about it and especially like the corners that are actually very sweet and unexpected. I just think there are writers that are created that people facing homelessness in all about exchanging resources, it is somewhat of layer of an amenity. Because this work its a lot about screenings or not necessarily pretty i have worked on a lot of communities that i just find useful information with. And then, in the book i go through communities and i was very present in, like there is chat rooms and chat boards and before i was opposed, i would definitely spend possibly months making sure that i did my research. Kendra i noticed that the title is working. If you want to sit down youre welcome to. But just like the internet, we wont make you participate in this particular way. But i think that is so interesting because one of the sort of weird things but i also, i read a fair amount of legal advice. And its probably a form of sort of like im sort of like causing myself pain. I read a fair amount of information. I think it is sort of funny because theres actually gotten a lot of people today of interacting with this particular form of internet is through twitter pretty someone will post something very ridiculous like i am the apple. A lot of people will respond to that. And totally different than the actual content. Joanne there is such a classic example of how a conversation that im sure is still usually quite to bizarre and heated in its own ways, take it to another platform where like twitter for this this underlying irony attached to it. And you to be above the content and i think thats what make twitter kind of distinctive critic you cant really be sincere about things. And what i think is incredible funny about that in twitter is that in the book i talk about when i first went on twitter i thought i was a jerk for the social network. Look at all of these nine people with their sharing for breakfast and why am i not a nice person he wants is share this weird joke and nowadays, if you like them overwhelmed with light that kind of like edge to the content and that everything has to be well on the front element of distancing yourself from the popcorn and if you can laugh at everything, youre not so intertwined to have some layer of personal distance from what you are doing there. Kendra need some ways in working can be your way of distancing yourself. I will say is someone who also is much of a lurker online according and with your book lurking. It isnt a lack of like investment. Im not actually less invested than the people are posted in some cases, i am more invested predict and the people oppose but i still like get that sense of distance. So you sort of praying the book in both of terms of this idea of becoming a user. In sort of one of the things that you talk about the term of the book is that i thought was particularly interesting because the features like the offline profiles were basically for those who are unfamiliar, they look like the ultimate in terms of renaming because it is for some poor person who didnt want to what gets a facebook rifle oil, then facebook creates one even though the northern facebook. So generally, anything about that. I wasnt changed. Or is it working in general or looking specifically. Joanne designed to tempt track activity and analytics and those elements that are part of the function of the social network. Especially something on facebook where it is attached to having data on its user. So that is another element of where you can leave about a trace and you can walk away from from things. And perhaps if we dont have cameras. [laughter]. Kendra is suitable way of leaving without a trace. Lets switch topics a little bit. One part of the book i read was a lot of interest with introspection on a broader chapter entitled a thrash. And as someone who is sort of at times identified without label and many of the sort of things that you despite. I was really appreciating that humility. And you say, that you will resist the urge around why women in the Tech Community seem more likely than professional feminists commentators in new york to address introspection old concerns. Im not going to ask you to read it but just note that this seems a little bit overly kind. And then i look at this is organizing the highlighted to actually your real activist. This ended up bleeding over into what i would follow the pipeline problem of diversity prospecting. The way in which theres like a particular, while very different version of feminism. And from new york. New york professional commentator that you are professing but at the same time it is a version of White Supremacy is him. And certainly the work things as you point out in culture. Id be curious about your process and thinking about that chapter is a real moment what im thinking you are reflecting on how not to come off as sort of nostalgic in a way that an historical sort of the positive parts of the internet. And more generally your views and your own reflection on this stuff. Joanne absolutely, it was an eyeopening intense moment. I was based in new york. As elements of harassment became unavoidable on platforms like twitter and facebook, i found the professional feminist media at the time was not necessarily addressing some of the intersexual intima elements that would into this harassment. Some of the resources that i found that were pertinent for things like d feminism. The resources that seemed so much beyond the media presentation of gender inequality so that period of time coincided with activism to and certainly black lives matter and i do remember especially at the womens march in 2016 having a feeling like you really come so far and a lot of basic understanding of inclusion that goodman quite radical three years prior are accepted much more broadly. Im always hesitant to name certain factors more than others but i do think as problematic is twitter is in traumatic is these major platforms are, the nature of how there is Something Like twitter where you had turning topics someone could create a and use that to discuss personal experiences of oppression. Having that Community Element in the platform that is designed for multiple communities. They pushed forward some more progressive ideas but i say that with a lot of hesitation because for the most part, i feel those platforms designed for everyone are very dangerous. If its one of those tradeoffs. Because you have a twitter account and you following many types of people, you probably follow a few people say from backgrounds very different from yours. Sensing their experiences a and their arguments as part of the conversation in the part of twitter that was happening or having a. So the white women would be the key one of the turning points for the activism. It is something that i dont want to discount but i dont want to put too much in it. I want to discount twitters role but i dont want twitter because twitter is certainly or did nothing for that to happen. Twitter the company did nothing for that user activism. Kendra like the ability for black women on twitter and use a platform for movements, organizing like finding audiences doesnt necessarily represent a credit to twitter. I thing that your point of english the way of people who are like them are engaged in one of the challenges that is kind of viewing yourself as a marker is a you convene this sort of false sense of familiarity despite the fact that you never actually interact with them. And i actually think thats one of the tricky bits that is sort of using these Online Platforms as a way to understand and relate to other folks experiences that you can feel that youre much more familiar with them. Specifically black folks online talk about how white folks communicate with them. He talks about lots of white folks things like everybodys black friend. And they think that theres a way that lurking creates that familiarity in the absence of any other relationship. At the very least leads to awkwardness in a most times can lead to, people giving entitled to other folks. The other reflection that i want to offer thats is that one of the challenges we talked a little bit about, one of the reasons that tech is acceptable in putting out this information and their causes he did not need those materials to save money it was sort of like while we have this online for free. I do think one of the other challenges of lurking, it could be easy to appropriate or sort of not necessarily credit peoples ideas if youre sort of experiencing them this way does not feel do you that i read this in book i just thought of twitter. So there is sort of a weird flipside to experiencing or inclusive 70 or understanding of the people their experiences through or interacting with them from a distance. Joanne the example that i think of again, going back to twitter, is we see plenty of tweets from people at airports complaining about some service. We dont see tweets from airport workers because they would get fired. These platforms might appear to be a representation of Public Opinion but its always a very privileged Public Opinion or is a Public Opinion that is taken certain risks to share. So its really key part of this and that again is a tradeoff. With the activism, the way that the decision is maybe a little embarrassing but i have a community here and i have a moment and i will take advantage of it. But its always been the case, with any kind of social media blogs, people have a sense of power. How many times have you seen people Say Something about their lift drivers on facebook. Its almost like they do not exist on twitter and i know that is part of what might focus bubble. I am following very filtered timeline but i also know, the opportunity to share this experience from possibly not even working it. Because lyft driving is kind of well i left, very much a last resort for people. This one thing while everett was wellliked twitter is toys like filtered. It is what people of various powers that they choose to share. And there are still strategies of how people can take be open to the general public. I took somebody whos a moderator designed for women in gaming. If you know anything about women in gaming, its not like the friendliest place in the world. But at the same time, gift understand that they dont want to be so exclusive that some kid in a small town knows no one else with these interests in their town cant use the internet. They find their people, find their community and they want to be open to their people somewhere off in the world. If but then also have a little bit of amazed to get through actual more intense conversations. They still might be completely unfiltered but are a little bit more loose and open they would be normally. So they submit posting history to moderator on reddit 20 show the youve been posting and another to troll. Hell get an invite. This little bit more of a deeper conversation and then there might be trolls that are just creating accounts and making their way through. Just get access to this group. But at least it is filtered. Kendra thank you, to be a perfect the leak. I think your book has a take away message. And hope for the future. Its the power of the small communities like the ones that sort of well, i dont think you are as, you dont use the phrase of the magic of the internet because you are much better writer than i am but the magic of the internet, this may coming up for a lot of folks especially more recently and think about platforms to get on. Artists and activists, i think is been driven a lot of attention to build into these communities pretty to have words of advice for folks who are interested who are lurking through the communities. In behaving with the internet as it was. Joanne versus divisive good called wonderland social. In the creek created an instant nasa dunford is a decentralized social network. It has a lot of pluses and minuses. It is kind of hard to get everybody to get up facebook and go to this decentralized social network. People having been on this Platform School and workplaces and so many things. For some people are quite privileged, they can go without having facebook accounts. Other people are is kind of force in participating. The social sacrifice of having to give up that account is too great. But if you are the place to try to build a community online, with people who you already know and you want to not have your data taken for profit and exploited for all those challenging challenges. Again these are tactics not necessarily solutions. Sometimes if you dont necessarily feel that you have the technical ability, even using some social platform that has elma elements that his technique that the gaming community, study in moderation. This is one of those techniques that is very easy to implement. One thing interesting about the internet right now, if you are a user, there also a moderator. You are also at some point in your life youre probably going to see a conflict and possibly what to step in. Maybe Somebody Just got into a fight on a neighborhood app. If you see some people like. Kendra yes, recognition. [laughter]. Joanne like only neighborhood apps but just using that as an example. Internet activity you will possibly see people have conflicts and perhaps replace help them disengage, deescalate the situation. That is part of having an one thing we didnt talk about is this ultra exclusive internet pretty you have to have the resources to afford to login and have a computer. There is a significant percentage of this country and of the world has use the internet and regularly. So show this internet possibly face with many people who do not like you. It does inevitably mean conflict. If you are in a place to make a little bit nicer, do what you can. [laughter]. Kendra you so much for it. Joanne speaking about your book and you are going to be signing them i understand. Copies are for purchase of their pretty it is really a beautifully risen book. I cant recommended highly enough.
