Catherine mcmanus who is with rollcall and covers capitol hill. Lets start with the rate over the weekend. The comments we heard from callers of questioning about whether president prshould have informed democratic leadership aheadof time. Currently in his comments he mentioned he didnt. Did we know what the president supposed to do or torby tradition has done in these situations . The president wouldnt form what is called a gang of eight. It is leadership of the house and senate , republicans and democrats as well as a Certain Community chairman including the Intelligence Committee chairs and one of the reasons that i imagine trump will continue to hit on his adam schiff is one of the traditional people that he would have told ahead of this rate and that did not happen and he specifically said leaks were part of his rationale for that. A Foreign Policy success for sure for the administration, for the nation and a political success. It gives him a boostjust when he needed it. He caught albaghdadi which he told about engraving detail yesterday. We will see how long it lasts. Its not going to derail impeachment. Democrats are still coming after him but you will see probably confidence just like obama enjoyed after the death of osama bin laden. The president goes to chicago today and will a gathering of Police Chiefs in chicago. You expect the albaghdadi rate will be part of that . This is the first good look about how the president is going to use this raid. His speeches to groups like this are usuallymaterially not different from what he said at a make America Great rally. To impeachment, be in peach mint inquiry slowed down with the death of Elijah Cummings. Some of the testimony was postponed. What do we know this week in the three committees that are hearing behind closed doors testimony . They do have a schedule, theyre getting back on track after that delay. Today is unclear whether Charles Cooperman will make an appearance. He is, had been called to testify today. However, he has admitted basically a challenge to that in court. And the white house has specifically requested that he not comply with the request to testify so we will wait and see on that. Later this week there are scheduled testimonies from a number of National Security councils professionals as well as among some dod to discuss the ukrainian aid and whether that was and to confirm or maybe stray from previous testimony from l United Health and others. And white house, have they taken the approach in terms of people who testify, are they taking an individual approach in terms of allowing Administration Officials to testify before the committee or have they made a blanket statement that no administration pressure. No one ministration officials to testify but a lot of showed up anyway area weve seen the white house as send personal letters to some officials, white house and agencies of the state department has sent personal letters to officials warning them not to comply with these subpoenas but a lot of people have done it anyway because its a congressional of the subpoena area charles government is the first guy to challenge the congressional subpoena and file a lawsuit to try to get out of it, hes trying to resolve what he called the constitutional difference. s position is hes unable to comply with both the congressional subpoena and the president s direction. They are coequal branches of the government so he wants the court to tell him what to do. Has anybody suffer the consequence of having testify before the committee and then either moved or fired from the administration . . We havent seen the evidence of that, retribution so far and there has been damaging testimony the learned by people still in the government. Bill taylor, acting ambassador and a former ambassador to ukraine who was pushed out, both sides delivered pretty storing accounts to congress and as far as not i know remain in their jobs. Alex is the white house editor of Bloomberg News area we are looking ahead at whats happening in washington, policy wise across the country as well. 2027488000 four republicans, 2027488000 four democrats and independents and others 202 748 8002. Send us a text, make sure you put your name and where your texting from. Back to capitol hill. We mentioned that postponing of thehearings last week. But just starting the week, we read the story earlier that katie hill is resigning because of allegations of relationships with staffers. The death yesterday of john conyers, seems like leader pelosi as a lot of things on added to her plate in addition to those hearings what is the faith of things like , us nca, the trade deal. Speaker pelosi has made it a big priority to say in press conferences and even after caucus meetings that those things are still happening, still on the table. As recently as last week she mentioned us nca as something that they are working on with a path forward and to find compromise on that deal and move forwardwith that. She has made a big point of leading every press conference, leading every speaking engagement with other policies area she is trying to convey that the democrats can both work on impeachment inquiry and legislate and govern congress. This would be more of a political question but does the white house see an advantage to getting these sorts of g, with a rather see these things pass or use them more of a cudgel on the campaign of not being able to get them past and democrats blocking these efforts . Accuse them of being a donothing congress im sure. I think the president would rather have achievements. President ial reelection campaigns are really a referendum on the current president. Its not usually voters going to the polls and voting against congress or voting against other politicians theyre expressing their opinion of the president and he would probably like to have legislative accomplishments. Would you rate this rate over the weekend the death of albaghdadi is among his top foreign policies . Its certainly an accomplishment, i wouldnt take that away from him. Used in texas and our independent line, mrs. Solow you are on the air. Just making a request of the united states, if the fact that i dont feel either way and i think the press is being played by the president. They should do their job correctly and report the facts. Where it leads, dont worry about whether theyre biased or not biased. They have their own personal biases but im blaming any problem that comes up about the reporting because people are going to be split. Theyre not supporting him. But the fact that the press will let the president dictate on his own terms what he says. He lets them talk like little kids. People are scheduling no more white house breakins, they have gone away from that and the press lets them get away with that. Lets hear from our white house editor. Whthe president , one of the biggest advantages are the biggest powers the president has is the bully pulpit. He can go out and talk to us reporters and press whenever he wants to under virtually any circumstances he wants to read we are limited in our ability to force them to talk to us in certain ways. If he doesnt want to hold press briefings in a former White House Press Briefing Room he doesnt want to. If you want to talk to us on the rope line before he boards marine one, he can do that. Dont like it much, ill be honest because this marine one departures are really difficult to cover. He sort of wanders back and forth. Sometimes you cant hear him over the roar of the helicopter and its not ideal for us but thats how hes chosen to communicate with the country that is right as president. Lets hear from bill as president in syracuse. Bill, go ahead. First of all, as i understand war, we primarily attack the troops. We do not spend our time assassinating people, that i believe is called a violation of the Geneva Convention or other conventions. Secondly, on a differentpoint , what the president as someone mentioned, there are no neutral networks anymore. I think that primarily has been done by thPresident Trump. He has attacked the media enough so that the media is now striking back and its not as neutral as it once was. Thank you. Bill in syracuse, mcmanus. Any thoughts on what he had to say. I think its interesting that he notes a reaction to President Trump. I think you would see more of an expert on the challenges of covering trump as a very unique element in the white house. Let me also address that assassination, i wanted to point this out, the New York Times and the reporting of the raid by special forces and their piece on the raid itself, they write the Delta Force Commanders under fire and entered the compound and killed a number of people and the Delta Force Team reached the wall with the explosive and arab linguists advised children to flee, a decision command is credited with saving 11 of the children mister albaghdadi had in his compound. Its the weekend with Catherine Mcmanus and alex blaine, good morning. Good morning. I just wanted to bring up something ive never heard discussed. Maybe i dont listen to enough tv. I dont think that theywill ever impeach President Trump. Ill tell you why. Because if they impeach him, he gets a trial in the senate. The senate controlled by republicans coming into the election cycle. He would get to call witnesses as any acute would do. Can you imagine next june or july because mcconnell can drag it out, in bringing up obama and joe biden, nancy pelosi, having been under oath on television every night, having biden have to explain his dealings with china and his son, his dealings with ukraine, have obama answer questions, loc. Never going to happen. Nancy pelosi has not lost her mind andeverybody would think about this , i just want to go onrecord first , im tired of being right. Kathy mcmanus timetable and you said so, the timetable e for impeachment in the house and potential senate trial. I can tell you House Democrats are using the word expeditious more than ive ever heard them use the word over thelast couple of weeks. March 20, 2020. We have pressed leadership and the Committee Chairman on that issue and we have not a clear timeline, most of them say that if you as republicans are calling for, they want a full open hearing and maybe even public hearings, then that takes time and that will only come after this private investigation period so they are providing the answer that is that you want to see this out in the open, thats a whole second page so we are notrushing this. P other than the president , the people you talk to at the white house, what are they preparing for . I think articles of impeachment are almost a foregone conclusion right now you i would be surprised if the house went through this inquiry and did not impeach the president and theres a question of how expensive a trial is conducted in the senate. A lot of republicans would like to dismiss and have a five minute, 10 minute trial and then dismiss the president of any wrongdoing but as this inquiry goes on and as they turn up more damaging information, that trial could be changed. Are they dedicating any staff to this alone a white house . The White House Counsels Office is working on this primarily. I think pretty much everybody on the white house at this point is distracted by impeachment. Its almost like the whole building of the war room. The president has been criticized by his allies for not putting a impeachment bar, hes resisted doing that because it feels like it would imply. Vice president fence on face the nation asked about the source of the impeachment inquiry y. And im sorry, this is adam schiff yesterday talking about the update on the impeachment inquiry, here it is. We will be doing public hearings and doing them soon. I dont want to give precise timing because its in a part where were struggling with the white houses continuing efforts to obstruct our investigation, to obstruct witnesses coming in. My guess is theyre going to fight us having john bolton in for example. John is an important witness that we already know from the testimony of others that this is someone who was concerned that people in the state department, ambassador sunderland and others were cooking up a drug deal and by that he meant a corrupt deal involving withholding white house meetings or perhaps holding of aid as well for his political purposes so obviously he has relevant information and we do want him to come in and testify. Catherine mcmanus, lets be clear. Adam schiff is appointment but there are threecommittees involved, correct . Is the house Intelligence Committee led by adam schiff, Elijah Cummings but its currently being led by a temporary chairwoman and also the Foreign Affairs committee. Lets get back to call to gale, oceanside new york, independent line. Good morning. Im calling i think every american should watch the president when he speaks. Watch the speech and then go back and forth to each news, msnbc and fox and see who really puts phrases the right way. Thats when you can get a meter on whos fooling you. And as far as schiff goes, i wish that the democrats would give President Trump the same respect that the republicans gave bill clinton during impeachment hearings. I think its underhanded, i think that its all a bunch of nothing. And truly, it just burns me that this could go on in our country and people dont see through it. Ive called schumer on it, ive called peter king on it. And i said how could you be a part of this. You have to stand up but this is just wrong. It should be above board area that we are america, we dont hide things in the bottom of rooms and dont let people see it. Its wrong. Thank you. Host gail on the independent level, i understand the senate is going to be voting this week on another effort at overturning a Trump Administration rule on healthcare, what else should we look for of interest on the house and senate floor. The senate will also be taking that move towards funding the government for 2020. Host that. Guest their bringing up a large package of a spending bill which include transportation, housing and urban developing, environment, agriculture, a huge package. And the house has passed most of their spending bills so this is really the senate playing catchup. They were waiting, the white house is what their argument was and so that will be taking out most of the senate. Their time on the floor this week read the house is taking a mixed bag of things. A measure to protect the grand canyon from nearby mining efforts. A resolution on Armenian Genocide which the president republican and democrats have decided to not refer to that early 20th century event as a genocide previously. And there are also bills on the house. The sanctions on turkey and what about the idea of opposing the decision by the administration, does this take some of the air out of the effort . Im interested to see how the albaghdadi rated impacts those voices of republicans who came out against the president s decision to back away from supporting our allies the kurds in that region because of all the things that weve seen about this raid, kurdish intelligence was definitely part of that effort and so if we reap the benefits from kurdish intelligence in this case, will those republican voices against the president s decision be just as loud this week because the kurds were so helpful or will they be quiet because this was a huge Foreign Affairs victory for trump. And alex win, it seems that Lindsey Graham has risen to being President Trumps top contact on capitol hill, security supporters. The president was critical over the decision last week proposing a Senate Resolution opposing which would oppose the house investigation on impeachment. Lindsey graham came out as one of the most vocal opponents of the withdrawalin syria. And then turned on a dime as soon as trump acted to try to clean it up. And negotiate a ceasefire which seems to be largely holding, the ceasefire president of turkey everything he wanted and diminished forces in the east but it does seem to have tamped down the violence. Trump has reasserted us support for the kurds by honestly protecting the oil fields that are in their territory. Held a call with the kurdish commander lastweek which turkey didnt like at all. Seems to have brought Lindsey Graham back on board. Lets go back to calls with nehemiah in new mexico, independent line that morning. Good morning. House it going, cspan. I just wanted to comment because ive heard a lot of calls saying that cspan is leaning right or left and i just dont agree with that. Im a Political Science degree major from Penn State University and i spent a lot of time hitting their and also a previous military officer. He served in theu. S. Navy. And i just think its important to realize if youre a veteran, your obligation is to allow people to force their opinions whether thats support of trump or support of the opposite of trump which you know, is solid, seeing how outrageous he can behave. But i think its important to realize that we are standing to defend peoples rights to force their opinions and when you limit that, its sort of deflates the obligation that you have and it sort of takes away from the constitution, having our First Amendment rights and what not and i think its important to sort of uphold and defend the constitution and that should be how you view peoples opinions and that will allow opposition and that will allow discoursefor us to advance as a nation. Let me ask you about covering the white house. Last week the white house announced the white house itself and federal offices will and incursions restrictions the Washington Post. I think they will be okay. Does that make your job broadly as reporters more difficult when news sources are ended or criticized in that way by their decision not to . The Washington Post and New York Times you a lot of their Business Online now. The Washington Post i know it free subscriptions to government employees. We have a. Gov or an email address, you can get a free subscription so i dont think it really materially damages them and subscriptions to that tradition of the paper. And theres kind of a dual game that goes on with this administration. The president wants to feed on us and use us as a prop in his political rallies but we have not been kicked out of the white house, we have not been kicked out, were still in proximity to the president all the time. He talks to us a lot. Theres a lot of news that comes out of the white house and a lot of people in his Administration Talk to us area and they work with us as the press. They understandthe value of the press. Its a lot of what goes on i think is for show. Speaking of perhaps for show or at least it got a lot of attention last week with republican members of the house. First lets hear a big round of applause for the president s playlist. Great music from a great man to get us excited about his
