Mother to child of god. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held his first News Conference in ottawa after being reelected to office. Prime minister trudeau outlined his priority for the new parliament including Climate Change, energy development, Global Engagement and human rights. Its a great pleasure to be back to the National Press theater and im here to take your questions an important part of our democratic work. Canadians have sent a message they want people to Work Together in parliament to deal with Climate Change to deal with the cost of living as well and thats what i intend to do. The message that they want their parliamentarians to work on things like affordability and the fight against Climate Change. Im looking forward to working together with other parties in getting down to work. Everyone is on the list already so you dont have to raise your hand. If you dont have a question, im sorry, we dont have enough time. Can you talk a little bit about the fact that theres no aelected in the two providences how you will manage to represent a i think its extremely important that the Government Works for all canadians. As ive endeavored to do over the past years as i will do even more now deliberately i will be reaching out to leaders across the country and reaching out specifically to westerners to hear from them. I spoke with both premiers of alberta and saskatchewan yesterday. But im also speaking with people like aand others. To talk about how we can make sure the concerns the very real concerns about albertans are being addressed and reflected by this government. This is something that i take very seriously as a responsibility to ensure that we are moving forward and bed in ways that benefit all canadians. I will be listening and working with a broad range of people to make sure that happens. You said you promised that the protests are building the transmission expansion there are some parties that now potentially could help and is the pipeline on the table to keep the government . We made the decision to move forward on the trans mountain pipeline expansion because it was in canadas interest to do so because the environment and the economy need to go together. We will be continuing with the trans mountain pipeline expansion. Anybody else . Hello mr. Trudeau ayou said during your speech that you heard from canadians, whats the message you heard exactly from canadians in the selection . We will continue to work very hard on Climate Change. Quebecers want us also to continue to invest in culture and the production of the french language we will do that. Quebecers want us to continue to have a strong qucbec boys around the decisionmaking table and we will do that. Are you prepared to work with the block . We are a strongly Federalist Party the unity of the country will always be a priority for us. The law issues like Climate Change on which quebecers and all canadians agree be the nationalist or federalist and even soberness. Lets not get into semantics. All quebecers believe we must do more on Climate Change and we must do more on issues like this and i will be very happy to work with the block on those issues. In the extent of his last four years of his work did you get the message and what you going to do to convince voters youre still the birth dog best person to lead the country . Think canadians sent a clear message they expect their leaders to Work Together on the big issues that matter to them. Two the fight against Climate Change and affordability. Cost of living for people across the country as we work to build a Better Future for them all. Im committed to working on that, fortunately those are big parts of our platform. We are also going to work with other parties to ensure we are making the right decisions for all canadians. Especially in the west in the past he said western alienation was made up by politicians. Do you believe that today . Ive been very clear in telling canadians from coast to coasttocoast that we need to recognize that albertans and people and saskatchewan have faced very difficult years over the past few years because of a global Commodity Prices because of challenges they are facing. For a long time they were able to get the resources to markets other than the United States. We are moving forward to solve some of those challenges but its going to take all canadians sticking together helping out folks who are struggling in places like alberta and saskatchewan. This is what canadians expect of their government and this is something we will stay focused on. a mr. Trudeau, people in qucbec would like you to have a qucbec lieutenant. To think that something you could consider . We will spend a lot of time over the next few days thinking about how we can do better, how we must do better to properly serve canadians. To serve people in all regions, in fact. We will take a few weeks to think about that and we will take necessary time to make sure that we reflect what people voted for. People who voted for us and people who voted for other parties. Now on the makeup of your cabinet, when will you be announcing the cabinet and will it be genderneutral . Gender equal . Yes it will be genderneutral. We will be forming our cabinet to be sworn in 20 november. Will you seek formal support agreement with one of the other parties . I intend to sit down with all Party Leaders in the coming weeks to talk about their priorities about how we can Work Together to respond to the preoccupations that the canadians have from one end of the country to the other. They will be various and varied conversations but i can tell you it is not in our plan at all to form any sort of formal coalition formal or informal coalition. You felt you had clear mandate from canadians but he reduced minority government and your share was reduced substantially. What lesson do you take from the fact that a million voters abandoned your party from last election to now . Canadians sent a clear message across the election of multiple parties that affordability and the fight against Climate Change are really clear priorities they want this parliament to work on. They also sent a clear message they expect us as government to work with the other parties on these issues that matter to them and thats exactly what were going to do. Canadian press, in your speech monday evening you said you heard the message from quebecers, but i havent heard anything from you on a seating to any of the a i had a very good conversation with him yesterday, continuing to Work Together on many issues of concern to quebecers and immigration, infrastructure to be at Public Transit projects. There are issues that we dont necessarily agree on but ive always committed to work with the qucbec government to try to find the right answer. To the concerns of quebecers and will continue to do that. We been very clear we have stated that we want to deliver on the priorities of quebecers and we will work with premier a to do that. Will be swearing in cabinet november 20. In the next decisions will be made in the coming years, days, weeks. How much leeway is there in that position to reduce the scope and any wiggle room at all given the fact that the parties are most likely to work on something moving forward. Right now and for too long we have been selling our Natural Resources to the United States at a discount. That doesnt serve anyone. Certainly doesnt serve the transition and the investments in clean energy and fighting Climate Change that take resources and take money to be able to do. Getting our resources to markets other than the United States and getting that done as quickly as possible remains a priority for us. We put in place measures that allowed the project to move forward by doing more for the environment, more for oceans protection. Better partnership with indigenous people. We need to get our resources to markets other than the United States in a safe and secure way. Thats what the transmission pipeline will do and then we will be able to invest all profits and revenues into the green energy and fighting Climate Change the canadians expect us. With the campaign you use the provincial Prime Ministers as a tool of attack, how are you going to build bridges back with these provincial premier like mr. Kenny. Is it possible . Ive had good conversations with several conservative across the country including doc fort and i had a very cordial conversation with him we agreed that we have to work on priorities and the issues that are the most important for canadians. Im always prepared to work collaborative with the premiers and others to deliver on what people want. Give me a concrete example of the compromise that you are prepared to make to have parliament to work properly and work with the opposition parties. I think the message canadians sent on monday evening has given me a lot of food for thought. I have committed to think carefully and in depth by consulting many people in the best way of moving forward. I think that is important to recognize, however, that canadians have asked us to work Better Together at the parliamentary level. Im committed to do that. I will be saying more about this as my thinking evolves. [inaudible] [inaudible question] canadians gave me a lot to think about on monday night. As they returned us in government but with the clear requirement to work with other parties on the priorities of the canadians spoke clearly to during the Election Campaign, particularly affordability and the fight against Climate Change. Im going to take the time necessary to really reflect on how best to serve canadians and how to work with those other parties. Thats of the people who voted for me, people who didnt look for me expect and im going to make sure we get down to work by doing that. You said you think all canadians have to work toward keeping the country together, united, specifically what you expect kenny and mo to do and what to expect conservative provincial leaders to do . I expect premieres kenny and mo and all premieres to stand up for the interest of their citizens. Thats their job. People in alberta and saskatchewan have been suffering and struggling because of circumstances beyond their control. We have over the past few years endeavored to be supportive. Weve endeavored to get the resources to new markets and we are well advancing on that. There is more we need to do and i look forward to conversations with all premieres across the country about what the next things we should be doing to better serve canadians. [inaudible question] i agree with the tribunal and the need for compensation. For people who have been through horrific situations. This is something we are going to work on and ensure we are delivering proper compensation. The way duty weabours is a government that understands taking response ability for mistakes made in the past. Weve also committed to move forward on the historic childhood Family Services legislation and empower and give the funding to indigenous communities to ensure kids in care continue to remain within their communities, within their identity, within their culture and language. That is something that is extremely important and thats what we are committed to moving forward on. I was pleased to have good conversations this morning with aband period bogard. We will continue to engage with indigenous leadership across the country indigenous communities. Strong voices to ensure that reconciliation isnt just a word. That we use but we continue the concrete actions weve taken over the past four years and do even more to make sure that the partnership and respect that is so necessary as we move forward with Indigenous Peoples in this country is at the core of everything we do. Mr. Trudeau you said earlier that the message of quebecers, the message quebecers sent was on Climate Change but if you listen to mr. Lugo, he says they sent a message to you about bill 21. Which one of you is right and you think you would change your position on bill 21. And will close the door to a possible intervention at one point. Any federal government should never close the door to defending basic rights be at the rights of women, director of outside qucbec religious minorities, the Lgbtq Community there to defend rights. But you said that quebecers have sent you a message. They punished you at the polls because of your position. That was one of the many issues during the campaign. We will continue to listen to the various points of view put forward by ordinary people across the country. I demonstrated in the city of montrcal and their priority was for a government to deal with Climate Change. We have a parliament and the government where there is a Firm Commitment to do more on dealing with Climate Change. Can you give us an example of a time when you were able to compromise with the other party . I worked closely with other parties over the past four years and will do even more so. That was the message the canadians sent on monday night. I look forward to sitting down with the other Party Leaders in the coming weeks to talk about how we are going to get to work in collaboration with other parties. Im wondering if theres actually an example that shows to take a different approach that shows you can actually do what and a lot of the things weve done over this first mandate whether moving forward on child benefit that lifted hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty particularly kids, moving forward on a National Housing strategy moving forward lowering taxes for the middle class and raising the wealthiest one percent, these are all things upon which they would be a broad consensus in the house or positive consensus from progressive parties. In the last parliament progressive parties voted against those measures. I expect them to be able to vote with us on things like the very first thing we will do which will be putting forward a bill to lower taxes for the middle class. Time. You have a few vacancies in the senate and more the way. How quickly to plan on filling them. We have created an independent process of advice to the Prime Minister on filling those vacancies in a responsible way based on merit. Not based on partisanship. We will ensure we are moving forward in an appropriate way on filling those vacancies with the right people. Do you still plan on changing parliament . Yes. A quick reconciliation questions, incarceration rates among indigenous population ab kevin called the new residential schools. Those actions you commit to properly addressing Going Forward . Will continue to work with indigenous leadership on their priorities we recognize incarceration rates are unacceptable for indigenous people. Theres not a single easy answer. The answers involve investments abalso education. Opportunities, infrastructure, economic development. There are many factors that go into this but theres also a need to look carefully at our Justice System and look at how we can improve our Justice System so that we are not further criminalizing and penalizing specific portions of the population. Did you take your message to italian canadians looking for the final and formal apology. The promise he made before the election what you say to them . I keep my promises we will be moving forward with that. Mr. Trudeau, lets pick up on my colleague from the last question on bill 21, absaid you have no legitimacy in terms of intervening for challenging bill 21 given your results in qucbec. Do you think you have the legitimacy. I think any Prime Minister and federal government has the responsibility to advocate and defend basic rights. Ive always been very clear on this. With quebecers and all canadians. Be on the rights of women, on the rights of minority, outside qucbec. Glory be it on abservices in ontario. We defend the rights at that point. Weve always been there and we will always be there to defend fundamental rights. This is what all canadians expect from their federal government and this is what we intend to do. But we wont commit at this point in time to a specific position we will decide on that. And in the future based on the conditions and their circumstances but i refuse to close the door to that and i was being very clear on that. Several times i cannot close the door to defending basic rights. I wont do that. For your first hundred days canadians are going to have a very close eye on what you do during those first hundred days, you mentioned the specific legislation you intend to table but what else do you tend to do . There are other things which will meet or deal with the priorities we put forward. We recognize that we need to work on medically assisted dying we need to work on the six month waiting period. We will continue to work on Climate Change as well. We will continue to work on the issues that canadians have told us we must work on. [inaudible question] i think many of us regret the tone and divisiveness and disinformation that were all too present features of this past Election Campaign. I think canadians expect us to Work Together to listen to each other. To figure out a way to move forward that isnt as divisive and challenging as the selection was. I think there were a lot of issues that were properly addressed. I think there were big substantial ideas that were fully debated in this Election Campaign and i regret that and i recognize that much of this campaign tended to be around me and i hold a bit of responsibility for that. This parliament and this government will be and needs to be focused on canadians and that means we need to Work Together to listen to each other and we need to figure out the right path forward for every part of the country. That is something im committed to doing. You said you called western premiers but im wondering without mps in saskatchewan and alberta how will you provide reasonable rest a i think any government needs to make sure it is hearing from every corner of the country and not all governments in history have had representations from every corner of the country. They have been different approaches taken. And i will be reflected on how we move forward in the right way. Ive already indicated in my conversations with aband upcoming conversations with people like don iversen and Charlie Clark and michael aand others that i very much want to hear the concerns that folks are experiencing. And the solutions they have to put forward for a part of the country that has faced very difficult times over the past years. I continue to get out to alberta as much as i could. I go to saskatchewan over the past years to listen to engage to work and we are going to continue to make sure every part of this country sees its priorities reflected in what this government does, even if we dont have numbers of government elected in those regions. [inaudible question] we are of course going to be continuing to work with friends and partners not just across the atlantic but around the world on big issues that matter to everyone, whether it be Climate Change or strengthening democracies or taking sure everyone has a real and fair chance to succeed around the world. These are things that we obviously have strong alignment with many european friends and partners. But we continue to engage around the world on these issues that do have an impact in the lives of canadians button all the features of our kids and grandkids. Im going to continue to ensure that canada is engaging responsibly and appropriately in the world. Why do you think your party got totally wiped up in alberta . I think there is a lot of thinking to do on that and a lot of listening to albertans as ive endeavored to do over the past number of years but obviously im going to have to do a lot more. To ensure that not why did this happen is not the central issue we have the central issue for me is, how do we move forward in a way that responds to the concerns that albertans and saskatchewan he owns have clearly expressed. This is something that matters to me and we are going to work very hard to ensure this Government Act in ways that benefits everyone across the country. Is there anything you feel you might have done differently over the last four years to maintain a higher level of support in alberta. The decisions we took over the past years have been focused on the best interests of the entire country including the initiative that saw us purchasing the transmission pipeline has a way of ensuring that we would be able to get albertans and Saskatchewan Oil resources, two markets other than the United States. We recognize that there is a frustration with the economic challenges being faced by by albertans and my focus as the government is going to be on responding to those preoccupations the way we will be working to make life more affordable for all canadians. We need to recognize that different parts of the country go through different challenges and making sure we are really listening to them is something thats going to be key for me. The Trump Administration has filed a lawsuit against california challenging abwith qucbec. Would your Government Support in the legal challenge against the Trump Administration . I dont know the details enough of what that challenge is and what impact it will have on it, not ontario, but qucbec. It was something we will look at carefully. Qucbec has long mistreated leadership in the fight against Climate Change like dc and canada and we will make sure we are continuing to fight Climate Change across this country in ways that we can. You mentioned you wanted to make sure reconciliation isnt just a word. Its what many as you might know people accuse you of thinking. Is that something you reflected on those accusations and what do you mean when you say you want to make sure it isnt just a word. I have heard the critiques that we need to be doing more and i agree with them. Im impatient as well. About closing the gaps, moving forward on Economic Opportunities on better support and indigenous lead systems of support for their communities. But i recognize at the same time that we have taken significant steps whether 87 longterm boil water advisory was lifted and on track to eliminate all of them. We have closed the funding gap we have reached parity on education in k12 for indigenous communities. Weve moved forward in a meaningful way on a broad range of issues and local successes across the country on reconciliation but there is much more to do. I was very pleased to speak with national chief perry bogard this morning who highlighted how pleased he was that this past government has done more for indigenous canadians and indigenous communities in any government history but that we need to keep working and do even more and i entirely agree. That is going to be my focus on indigenous relations because no relationship is more important to me than the one with a this is the foreign policy. This past summer prodemocracy demonstrations a bit of a backlash spilled over into vancouver we had canadian citizens being threatened on the streets by promainland supporters. Given this and the aggressive nature of the regime itself toward canada, agriculture, itsy day 317 for canadians, is your government prepared to take a stronger stance against china . One of the very first things i did this morning was sit down with my chief of staff and ab to talk about some of the challenges we would be looking at in the coming weeks and indeed in the coming years. I also got abbriefing from my National Security intelligence advisor to address the issues and others. Obviously for this Election Campaign i continue to give and i on the situation around the world including the difficult situation in these two canadians have been arbitrarily detained are facing and the 300,000 canadians living in hong kong in the concerns we have around this fact for human rights and deescalation there. Im going to continue to reflect and engage with experts as we look to move forward as the government that will continue to stand up for human rights, stand up for canadas interest and ensure that countries around the world will continue to defend the values canada stands for and we been pleased to see so many allies standing up for canadian interests and the interests of those canadians being detained. Would you be willing to do Something Like cancel chinese visas . As a report . I look forward to sitting down with and checking in with our experts who been working hard over these past weeks on this china file, including our new ambassador to china. You said that you spoke to mr. Trump recently. We know that you dont agree with him on Climate Change. We talked about the investment that we can make together in Public Transit for example. Weve already worked on International Trade and the relationship with the us. We have committed to work with premier ford on the ab university. So i will continue to work with all provinces that are ready to work with us. I know your crescent was that mr. Trump it was mr. Doug ford. All provinces actually want to work handinhand with the government but some dont, of course, we have to find a way of compromising so we can properly serve canadians. Yes a sunday night on q a wall street trader turned photojournalist chris are naughty on his book dignity about the plight of those living on the margins of society in america.
