Been doing research on men and women. I used to be on the board of directors of the National Organization for women and i was speaking around the world on these issues and teachers in japan would come up to me and say we have more problems with boys than girls. And i started seeing ultimately in 14 years of research i did for the boy crisis why our boys are struggling and what we can do about it, 56 of the largest developed nations were having problems where boys were pulling behind girls in all academic subjects but especially reading and writing, the two biggest predictors of success so i started saying is something bigger going on and what is the cause of this and why has it developed and i focused, developed nations had enough mastery of survival to allow permission for families to have divorces and for women to raise children without much father involvement or any father involvement so i started looking at those populations and found when there were divorces children did much worse but children who had almost no father involvement did much worse because they were where the boy crisis resides at so they went to the single mother and found the same was true. It understood, there were 10 causes of the boy crisis, the biggest cause was the boy crisis resides where fathers do not reside. Host you say it is a crisis of education. Boys pulling behind in all major subjects including reading and writing, dropping out of school to a much greater degree. In the old days, Jerome Powell pointed this out on 60 minutes, the two big crises america has to worry about, one is the cyberwarfare crisis, the other with young men. The other problem was our Education System is not preparing boys for jobs, technology nearly as quickly. Boys that were not academic use their muscle but now the world has moved from muscle to microchip, muscle to mental and japan, 30 of the students go into Vocational Education areas and 99. 6 get jobs after they graduate. In the United States we have huge percentages of boys who dont have any channeling to Vocational Education. It has been cut back when it should be increased in its focus. Boys are experiencing lack of purpose, dropping out of high school and boys who drop out of high school the Unemployment Rate in their 20s is 22 22 , six times the Unemployment Rate of the nation as a whole. Host could be a case where girls are doing better . Girls are doing better but in some ways girls that do not have dads are not benefiting from the normal evolution of girls doing better. We are living in an era where i was on the board of now, extremely supportive of the feminist movement, when girls and and they have children oftentimes the women will say three choices, option one is to raise children, option 2 is to raise money, option 3 is to do a combination of both. Guys say i have 3 options to. One is to raise money, option 2 is to raise money and option 3 is to raise money. Guys often feel if they dont work fulltime, wont be worthy of being a father when thousands of women, millions of women who want to be successful in careers but also wants to have well raised children and a good marriage and what they are missing is an enormous percentage of men, 49 of men who are very interested in taking care of children even full time and women dont tend to be looking for men who want to raise children so we have this gap between women who want to focus on their career but if they dont want the man to focus on raising their children, they dont have children who are well raised because the children who dont have a lot of other involvement, there are real problems. A board member is attending the freedom fest libertarian conference. You should be surprised that hes attending the freedom fest conference and that is said that one should be surprised. When the boy crisis book came out, my pr people put it out too, hundreds of liberal mainstream networks and hundreds of conservative networks and freedom libertarian networks, 90 of our interviews came from enormous responsiveness and only 5 came from among democrats and liberals is enormous focus on if women want to raise children by themselves they should be able to do that. Among conservative and libertarians theres an enormous focus on a liberal is understanding the value of the family and value of fathers, this is unbelievable. The truth is this is where democrats are missing out. Fathers are more valuable than i knew before i began to research. The father is roughhousing with the children, the more empathetic the children are likely to be would never have connected empathy with roughhousing. I would never have connected empathy with greater propensity for children to be of service but not aggressive. I would never have created roughhousing with greater propensity, would never have realized the bond created by roughhousing allows fathers to enforce boundaries without children being so resentful of the boundaries being enforced because there is so much fun with that, they are willing to do what dad suggests so when dead so you can stick your elbow in your sisters i the children say okay, then go back to the roughhousing and forget about it because they are and what psychologists call Emotional Intelligence under fire. They forget they are supposed to be behaving empathetic to their sisters feeling so they go back and try to win by pushing their brother or sister aside and the father says okay, i gave you a warning, no more roughhousing and the next time they roughhousing the father says you cant win by pushing your brother and sister aside they remember that they have to consider their brother and sisters needs because if they dont they wont get what they want, the roughhousing and that is an example, one of many examples of the difference in dad style parenting versus mom style parenting that leads to children having much more ability to focus on postponing their gratification, doing what they need to do, be considerate of their sister and brother to get what they want, more roughhousing. Host you talk in your book about 1972 being a watershed year in the Womens Movement. It was one of the years women, the Womens Movement, the board of directors and other Board Members and myself, i started to see the research that said when there is a divorce and fathers were not involved that was a problem. Host divorce was on the rise. Divorce was on the rise but the board of directors said wait a moment. We think children know better than fathers do and a lot of our members want the option to be involved with children or not and if we say they cant be, adhere to children having equal rights to the father and mother and we will do some now members and we have a lot of fish to fry. Custody is not the only fish we have to fry so we cant afford to chop our now members in different directions. I understand that politically. Iran for governor of california. Im not politically naive. I understand that politically but its not the right thing to do for our children. That is a morally unjustifiable position. Host warren farrell, the boy crisis has become a political issue. It has become a political issue. The good news is i went out to iowa, interviewed 7 democratic president of candidates and when they were educated about this there was a certain amount of receptivity. Because they are going run the country listening, they are seeing a large number of boys doing well that almost all those boys are dead deprived boys, they are aware there are Mass Shootings. They were not aware 90 of the Mass Shootings took place by boys the prison population problem but not aware that 90 of those children are also dead deprived children and aware of isis are not aware the boys and the girls who become isis recruits have in common dead deprivation. I hope i am educating them and working with the Trump White House and Trump Administration to create a white House Counsel on boys and men so boys and men issues will be on the public agenda in addition to girls and womens issues. Host is there a White House Commission on girls and women . For eight years there was under obama and it has become the inactive under the Trump Administration was i have no problem with her being a white House Counsel of women and girls, just have a problem with there being on one on women and girls and not boys and men when boys and men are committing suicide at four times the rate of girls and women, showing signs of destructive and selfdestructive behavior on so many fronts. Host how did you get into this line of work . Guest i was doing my doctorate at nyu in teaching at Rutgers University and the Womens Movement surfaced in 1969 and i started talking about the Womens Movement as a Political Movement and my students said you, the firing your belly, i was able to persuade my Dissertation Committee to let me change my dissertation topic to the politics of men and womens issues and i ended up writing a book that was pretty much supportive of the feminist movement, celebrated man and men, began to see it was much more complex than i was being told. One of the big discoveries are seeing there was a belief that men make a dollar for every . 80 women work but that is not true. What is true is dads earn more money than moms but women who have never had children and never been married actually out earn men by 17 in comparison to men who have never had children and never been married so i started to say to myself this is interesting. If i knew i could hire a woman for . 80 to do the same type of work a man is doing for one dollar i wouldnt be able to hire a man and if i was stupid or biased enough to hire a man, i would have the punishment of my bias being what i have to pay him, 20 more to do the same work. Host to quote from your book we often allow that the disproportionate percentage of young black men in prison may reflect our racism but rarely contemplate whether the other half of black men is men that may also reflect our sexes. Might the 700 increase in the 93 male prison population in the last halfcentury means the way we are raising our sons the last halfcentury is leading to a deterioration in Mental Health . What i found is when there isnt a lot of father involvement and there isnt a lot of School System encouragement of boys to have good role models like elementary school, theres a lot of female teachers. Boys go from female only rooms to female only schools and it doesnt take a great scientist or thinker to not be perplexed that they are more interested to gang leaders giving them structure and meaning and purpose so their testosterone is channeled destructively rather than constructively. We have great lack of concern for boys issues and the reason we have lack of concern for boys issues is historically in order to be a real man you had to prepare yourself to be disposable. To be a man you had to prepare yourself to be disposable in war where you do hazardous jobs in the workplace or to work 60 or 70 hours a week at the executive level position, die for what japanese call caro she, death from overwork. The reason we care about men and call them heroes is they were willing to die so the rest of us could live. When you train people to die in order to love them you cant be too emotionally attached to their health. So boys historically developed heroic intelligence which is training for a short life as opposed to Health Intelligence which is training for a long life or Emotional Intelligence which is training to be able to express your feelings or fears and talk about them in a healthy way to other people without whining about them. This is the great opportunity for boys in the future but boys in the future who dont have the old sense of purpose have a purpose and when they have a purpose void combined with lack of a father they have a purpose void plus a dad void so they dont have the father to guide them to have the discipline to achieve a variety of purpose in their life and they become a failure to launch and ashamed of themselves and angry at people who are not paying attention to them and giving them praise like teachers or malefemale peers or their parents. Those boys with lack of purpose often get depressed, withdraw to video games can become as boy girl time dont want to be rejected so they go to porn because pornography is access to a variety of attractive women without fear of rejection at a price they can afford. They may get addicted, their dopamine goes up and they get addicted to more and more risky things with women so when they finally meet a woman interested in being sexual with them the woman feels shes being treated like an object because she is being treated like an object so she withdraws, increases shame, increases anger and worstcase scenario that is the background of mass shooters and in a desperate way, i will make people regret they didnt worry about me, talk about me, care about me. Host you have to to sticks in your book that mass shooters have been overall fathers. My wife accuses me of being obsessive compulsive but because im saying things different from what i normally heard i want to be sure they not only made headlines but done the research personally as the case of mass shooters or other cases done the research thoroughly. Is the sense of purpose you referenced earlier in our dna . Really good question and the answer is yes and here is why. The dichotomous type of where, males now women as a rule, male animals now, among the animal population 85 of the reproduction happens by female sex and reproducing with the alpha male. Including human beings, competing to be the alpha male so they dont attract women to be sexual with and reproduce with. Among buck elks, the females are almost always attracted to the book elk with the biggest rack but to get the biggest rack, the sense of purpose becomes getting the biggest rack, becoming the alpha male, wanting to reproduce and be attractive, the attractive. So the buck elk to become the elk with the biggest rack loses 33 of his calcium, nutrients and minerals to get the big rack. He has to immediately after he reproduces get rid of that rack or he is highly likely to die if the winter comes soon. That is a story of masculinity. One is our purpose, to be the alpha male but mens weakness is our facade of strength, that rack is that weakness. It was functional for achieving the purpose of creating the next generation. Host adhd on the increase . Or more recognized . Definitely more recognized it overrecognized in males because what we do is a boy shows signs of being fidgety and so on, nowadays to say adhd when we should be saying the boys need more recess at school. Not that and until recently the centers for Disease Control did research on recess and does it take away from a child studying effectively or add to a child studying effectively and for each minute in recess, more functional for child doing better on tests than studying for tests. It is more true for boys, schools have responded to boys who are fidgety by doing less recess. Fewer male teachers, three things boys need, and being motivated. And boys doing things, learning curiosity is motivating for boys. Rather than giving them a different education. And predominantly, 15 of children when raised predominantly by moms and one of the reasons is dads are more likely to be engaged in the boundary enforcement will with the children. Dad and mom will set boundaries the same way. You cant have a scheme to you finish your beats. If you are possible to get ice cream. The difference is in the way moms and dads and force boundaries. Have this many more peas. Then you can have your ice cream. Mom is able to be negotiated with. Then the child has half that and says i tried. Can i have my a scream now and mom says i dont want to get into a big fight, yes and dad goes now, you cant have your ice cream until you finish your peas so what children are learning with their dad is they cant have what they want to have, the ice cream, until they focus their attention on doing what they need to do which is finishing the peas, not focusing on manipulating a better deal. So the children raised by dad are more likely to have postponed gratification, the single biggest predictor of success but also the biggest predictor of success at work, a reverse player for the Basketball Team or finish your homework without getting distracted by a text. That success makes boys feeling girls feel they have friends, that when boys dont have that success, a slippery slope that in worstcase scenario moves to depression, anger, withdrawal, alienation and Mass Shootings. You use the phrase failure to launch. What does that mean . The boy has inside him the brightness to launch but doesnt have the postponed gratification to do what his dream is. When a mom raise of the child shes encouraging of the boy or the girl to go after their dream and when a boy is encouraged or girl is encouraged to go after their dreams but doesnt have the discipline to do the play, to rehearse the music, to rehearse on the Basketball Team or do the homework he doesnt fulfill his dream. When the boy or girl does not fulfill their dream they become disappointed in themselves, ashamed of themselves and after a while become afraid to dream. Host were you disappointed in your liberal colleaguess reaction to this book and this research . I have been very disappointed in my liberal colleagues, very disappointed host you consider yourself a liberal. I consider myself mostly liberal but not slightly at this point. Because i feel being part of what i wanted, part of what i thought i was part of was caring and compassion and making sure people were included. I never wanted liberalism to stand for we want freedom for women without concern of what is best for children. Im still in favor of freedom for women but i want women to have the choice whether or not to have children but the second they make the choice to have children they have made a free choice for their childrens needs to be put first. You dont have to do that in life now that you have both Birth Control but if you choose to do that then you choose to give up the choice of making your personal freedom more important than your childrens healthy life. Host you talk about the cost of the boy crisis. What is your estimate . My estimate is 1 trillion a year, Homeland Security cost to protect against isis. We have a 700 increase in the prison population and prison building since 1970. The cost of maintaining prisoners who become men who are draining taxpayer dollars as opposed to contributing taxpayer money. If we think of the Mass Shootings and the security we are engaged in to finance that. If we think of women not raised by fathers those women are more likely to get welfare payments as a result of not having jobs and salaries and have children out of wedlock in teenage years and their economy not supporting them so on and on like that, trillions of dollars over a period of years and 1 trillion per year we spend by not paying attention to the boy crisis. Host who is your coauthor . John gray who wrote men are from mars, women are from venus. How do you begin the collaboration . We live in a town called mill valley outside san francisco. We met, we both knew of each other and started taking 500 walks together and we differed a great deal but that made him a good book because the best of his ideas, hopefully the best of my ideas plus he has absolute genius when it comes to nutrition and adhd, how to prevent it and reverse it if your son does have it. Host by first grade you write boys and girls raised with fathers present have higher iq scores than those where families where fathers were absent. How do you know that . Kyle pruitt has studied males and females who had that involvement very early on and he found he looked at control groups of those who didnt have that father involvement and that differs not only in early years but in premature birth. Boys and girls with fathers attending to them when they are born prematurely are released from the hospital more quickly. They have better motor functioning, developing iq scores that are higher much more quickly so every single age i want to make clear this does not mean mothers are not important, the children who do best have mother involvement and father involvement and checks and balance parenting. The mother says it is too soon to climb a tree. In a couple years you can climb the tree. Dad says let her climb a tree. It will be good for her and mom and dad start negotiating saying they can climb the tree but not beyond this point or you have to be right under the tree in case jimmy or jane falls or give me a cell phone so you dont get distracted. That allows children to be able to make decisions about what risks are appropriate or inappropriate without falling and killing themselves in the process. They get the best of both worlds when dads and moms listen to each other, respect each of this contribution and dads in addition to listening to mom we also, dads have to know the benefits of things like roughhousing and climbing a tree, children that climb that tree and assess risk increase not just their iq but increase their ability to do Risk Assessment and Risk Assessment is part of what entrepreneurs, people at freedom fest, people who learn to assess risks, part of what allows them to be entrepreneurs. To protect our daughters so much and expect them to be the future risktakers and entrepreneurs is to create an unjust expectation on our daughters. Host back to the book, by the age of 9, a 14 reduction in telomere length. Telomere. Telomeres, every cell has telomeres in it and the telomeres the longer they are the more they contain chains that allow your genes to be able to prevent yourself having cancer or Heart Disease or whatever your biological heritage is. At the age scientists found at the age of 91 2 the longer your telomeres are, longer by 14 your Life Expectancy is likely to be 14 longer. The telomeres of children, boys and girls who have a lot of father involvement versus those that didnt they found of all the variables they tested for the most important single one was father involvement and the children at the age of 91 2, minimal to no father involvement on average there telomeres were 14 shorter than those with significant father involvement but they divided the male and female children and found the boys telomeres when they did not have significant father involvement were 40 shorter than their sisters leading to a Life Expectancy that would be 16, 17 shorter, predictably at the age of 91 2. There are thousands of things in the boy crisis why our boys are struggling and what we can do about it that explain why father involvement is so important but many things i do not know, which is all the reasons those telomeres are so much shorter with lack of father involvement. We will be discovering those things over the next century. I happily been able to identify 70 Different Things that happen, positive or negative for boys or girls when father involvement is involved in father involvement is just one of ten causes of the boy crisis. The most important one, the one of the other ones is not being aware that the boy crisis exists and this is why i am trying to get the trump administrative integrator white House Counsel of boys and men so on the public agenda is a National Awareness but private companies and philanthropies and professional associations can start to say what is it that we with our expertise can be helpful to minimize. What is the response from the Trump Administration . Very positive. Steve wagner in hhs at a very high level wants to be the point person on this. Bob mcewen is active with republicans in the Libertarian Movement and says he will help steve wagner, we are working to talk with Jerome Powell and other people. Host what is the pushback on working on this crisis . Is a political pushback . What is it . It is more a political pushback and pushback from liberals. Host what is the reasoning . They want moms to have the freedom to raise children with or without dad and after divorce the mothers to let their old life go. They made a mistake when they married the man they married so they found a new man to move out of state to a new location and forget the biological dad. I was not inherently opposed to that until i found out that was dangerous for Childrens Development and my finding that out and still saying i want to write about that even though that was not what the National Organization for women wanted me to say, cost me 20 30 million in speaking engagement costs and awards and honors. Host because you broke guest from the politically correct line of thing women should have the freedom to be full time mothers and doesnt do anything but good for the children. Host that is your guesstimate of the financial damage. What about stepfathers . Stepfathers are very complex. The problem with stepfathers is they never become more than an advisor to the mother. The mother has to be very aware of everything dad style parenting contributes. To be able to give up her Natural Instincts so that the father does tough love type decisions, to say you want a new teacher because your teacher doesnt like you. I want you before you have a new teacher to learn how to get along with the teacher you have because in life you will not always have bosses and colleagues you can get along with. That tends to be more the dad part of it but dads dont do a good job explaining to moms how important that training is and moms dont do a good job that the stepfather who is not the biological father has something to contribute so she tends to take over the process, becomes the boss and the stepfather becomes a good advisor but often times if he is advising differently than her propensity to protect she often feels the reason he doesnt want to do the same thing protecting the child is he doesnt love the child is much as i do. The stepfather senses that and so he goes back to earning more money which is the one area he is appreciated for and the children lose the benefit of the dad style parenting in their life. Host what about fathers or thing a parent . Guest they do reasonably well with their children, much better than moms with Single Parents do and that is one of the things. And i would never have said it if that is where the research didnt lead and understand im not wanting research to lead where it led because i knew i was risking those millions of dollars and i am not mister altruistic.
