Hello, North Carolina. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you. I tell you what, its great to be here. I tell you what, its the reason why hbcus are doing so well. Well make them do even better. I tell you what. Thanks for sharing your story, thats what this country is all about. Youre making your family proud, man. I want to thank the speakers ahead of me. Commissioner, soontobe commissioner, jessica holmes, where are you . I know youre here somewhere. And also, stuart holley, zach hawkins, folks, coach, i tell you what, my granddaughter is with me today. She went to a school that the coach went to for a little while in washington. Apparently, the coach is tell me that shes recruiting some of the Girls Basketball team from where my granddaughter went to school. And she showed me, coach, she showed me a video you were doing for your team where you made the distinction between competing and winning, the heart of winning. You talked about working hard and competing. Everybody, you point out, works hard. But working hard is actually essential. But competing is even more consequential. You can work hard but did you compete with everything you had . Competing because you know whats at stake, what is at the heart of winning . My good friends, t. K butterfield and david price, who represent the first and fourth districts with decency and honor, they can tell you that were doing both, working hard and competing like we never did before because so much is at stake for this nation. The very soul of the nation is at stake. As my coach used to same colors, its go time. The most important election in our lifetime. Going to make all the different here in North Carolina. The choice is as clear as its ever been, and the stakes have never been higher. The stakes in this election remind me of something my dad used to say when we lost in scranton, pennsylvania, when i was a kid and coal died and we moved down to delaware. He said joey, jobs are about a lot more than a paycheck. Its about dignity. Its about respect. Its about your place in the community. He said, and this is the gods truth. He said it many times. Its about being able to look at your kid in the eye and say honey, its going to be ok. Thats a lesson ive never forgotten. I grew up around a lot of hardworking folks. How many people today think they could look their kid in the eye right now and say, itll be ok, and mean it . So many people are hurt. Over half of people in america say they have a bill for 400 they didnt expect in one month and they wouldnt be able to pay it. They either borrow money or sell something. As unemployment is way up. 1,200,000 people file for unemployment just this week. Folks are worried about making the next mortgage payment, or rent payment other there rent payment, whether their health care would be ripped away in the middle of the pandemic, worrying about sending their kids to school or not send their kids to school. They see folks at the top doing better than ever while left to wonder, whos looking out for me . Well, thats Donald Trumps presidency. More than 217,000 americans dead because of covid19. Another 4000 here in the state of North Carolina. On friday, we saw the highs highest number of new cases in monday since july. In the last two days, the worst day since july. Yet, the other night, trump said at one of his rallies, weve turned the corner. As my grandfather would say, this guys gone around the bend, weve turned the corner. My grandfather would say, this guy is around the bend if he thinks that. Things are getting worse. He continues to lie to us about the circumstances. Experts say were lucky to lose as many as 200,000 additional lives between now and the end of the year all because this president cares more about his park avenue perspective around the world, the stock market, than he does about you. He refuses to follow the science. Its estimated that if we just wore masks, we would save, between now and the end of the year, 100,000 lives. His own head of the cdc said that. Ts you know what, wha really sad about this . The president knew how dangerous the virus was all the way back in january. He hid it from the country. Hes on record. He told bob woodward in a taped interview that the disease was deadly, much worse than the flu, and heres what he did. According to the new york times, three, four days ago, his administration gave wall Street Investors a heads up but he didnt tell us. Just his friends on wall street. Thats why they made so much money by selling short. Well, who all got sold short . You all got sold short. And do you know whats coming . What happened to the rest of us . He tried to claim that he didnt want to panic the American People. The American People dont panic. Trump panicked. His selfish behavior is no surprise. After all, this is the same man who looks at americans, who put lies on the line for this nation like so many tens of thousands here in North Carolina have done, like my son bo did in iraq beau did when he came back from iraq. He called them suckers and losers. Who the hell does he think hes talking about . These are heroes. They are the people who sacrificed. They are the backbone of the country. And now, as a consequence of all of the lying, negligence, and irresponsible action, it comes to how many chairs were emptied at the table last night because of this negligence . Folks, were so much better than this. Despite the crisis we face, we have enormous opportunity. We could build back better. We just goy to stand up and take it back. Look. We can build an economy that gives everyone a fair return on their work, and equal chance to get ahead. For example, communities of color in North Carolina and across the country, the question is, in the good times come you lag behind. In bad times, you get hit the hardest and first. And in the recovery, the last to bounce back. The answer is about justice. Criminal justice and police reform. I know this nation is Strong Enough to face systemic racism and provide a safe space for us to speak for the families and Small Businesses that too often bear the brunt of looting and burning. We have no need for armed militias roaming americas streets. This is the United States of america. We should have no tolerance for extremist white supremacist groups marching in our communities. But if you say we have no need to face Racial Injustice in this country, as he says, you havent opened your eyes to the truth. There have been powerful voices for justice in recent months. George floyds sixyearold daughter, who i met with in the family, i knelt down to say hi to her and she looked at me and said, mr. Vice president , daddy changed the world. Daddy changed the world. Jacob blakes mother, with whom i met, says violence doesnt reflect her son and the nation needs healing. And she said she prays for police officers. Doc rivers, a basketball coach, choking back tears when he said were the ones getting killed. Were the ones getting shot. Weve been hung. Its amazing why we keep loving this country when this country doesnt love us back. Think about that. Think about what it takes to be a black person, to love the country today as he does, a deep love for the country. We need leadership that deescalate tensions, open lines of communication, and bring us together, to heal and to hope. As president , thats precisely what ill do. But true justice is also about jobs, good paying jobs, and financial stability. It was right here, in durham, a century ago that an oasis of blackowned businesses thrived. Even in the era of jim crow. Paris street was one of the first examples of a flourishing black community in america, a place that offer the country a glimpse of what the country could become if we looked up to founding values, giving families a real shot at a home, starting a small business, debtfree, so they can build wealth and pass down opportunities through generations. Thats how we deliver equality and equity. Another example, more and more women are dropping out of the workforce in this recession, whether in cities or in suburbs. Providing funding to reopen safely. The caregiving crisis so many families are experiencing, squeezed between caring for kids and caring for an aging loved one. And protecting health care. In the middle of this pandemic, why do republicans have the time to hold a hearing on the Supreme Court instead of addressing the significant Economic Needs of local communities . Ill tell you why, for real. Not hyperbole, ill tell you why. Its about wiping obamacare off the books. Thats what its about. Because their nominee has said in the past, the law should be struck down. If they get their way, 100 million americans will lose their protections for preexisting conditions. Complications of covid19, 7 Million People infected, will become the next preexisting condition, allowing insurers to jack up your premiums or deny your coverage altogether. And women will be charged more for their health just because they are women. Folks, we can do so much better. I will build on the Affordable Care act so you can keep your private insurance, you can choose the medicarelike option. Were going to create subsidies and lower your premiums and deductibles and outofpocket spending. Look, your governor has been working hard to expand medicaid, but its being blocked by republican legislature. My plan will involve 357,000 uninsured North Carolina ands north carolinians in a public option for free automatically. Its going to make a lifechanging difference for so many families. We can only do any of this if we come together as a country. We need to revive the spirit a of bipartisanship in this country, the spirit of being able to work with one another. When i say that, and i said that announced, int i was told maybe we used to be able to do that. That was your reputation in the senate, joe, but things have changed. They dont work that way anymore. Im here to tell you they can and they will and they must if were going to get anything done in america. Folks, im running as a proud democrat, but im going to govern as an american president. No red states, no blue states, just the United States. I promise you ill work as hard for those who dont support me as those who did. Thats the job of a president , a duty to care for everyone in america. Folks, and you too have a sacred duty, to vote, and it matters. North carolina matters. And senator harris and i are asking you for your trust and support. Well always have your back, so please, please vote and help get out the vote. Go to iwillvote. Com nc. Early voting started on thursday. We got to keep the incredible momentum going. We cant let up. You can vote early in person until the 31st, but dont wait. Go vote today and dont just vote for me and senator harris,. Youve got a governors race, a senate race, a Record Number of black women on the ballot, labor commissioners, and the courts. Folks, theyre ready to deliver for North Carolina families, so vote. Vote. Its time. When i announced my candidacy, i hadnt planned on running again and ive said it before, my son had just died and i had no interest. Then i saw those folks come out of the fields in charlottesville carrying torches. Close your eyes and remember what it looked like, their veins bulging, shouting antisemitic bile, the same bile that was shouted in the streets of germany in the 1930s, carrying nazi flags, accompanied by the ku klux klan, and a young woman was killed who was protesting the opposite direction. And when asked, the president , for comment, this president said something no other president has ever said in the history of the United States of america. He said, there were very fine people on both sides. Very fine people. Folks, i mean it when i say this. Its time to restore americas soul. Its time to rebuild the backbone of america, the middle class, and bring everybody along, no matter your race, age, religion, gender, ethnicity, or disability. We can do this. The blinders have been taken off the American People. Theyve seen whats happening. Its time to unite america. Look, ill never forget what president kennedy said when i was a kid when we were going to the moon. Every kid in school heard his speech. He used a line in that speech, my Senate Colleagues in the white house heard me use all the time, it made the most impression on me. He asked the unasked question. Why are we doing this . And his response was, he said, because we refuse to postpone. This is america. We refuse to postpone americas work that must be done. Theres nothing beyond our capacity. We have never, never, never never failed. Theres no limit on our future. Nobody can tear america the only one that can tear america apart is america itself. Everyone knows who donald trump is, so let them know who we are. We choose unity over division, science over fiction. And yes, we choose truth over lies. So folks, its time to stand up , stand up and take back our democracy. No more time left. God bless you all and may god protect our troops. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
