Every one of you here taking the time to meet as a community and take an active role in electing the candidate who will take down donald trump in november. [applause] before coming here to carson city, i was working in montana for a nonprofit dedicated to assisting students experiencing homelessness, making them feel like they belong, helping them understand their full potential. I knew they were not alone in their fight and that millions of americans have experienced similar feelings of exclusion and the Current System is actively working against those who need the most help. I wanted to be involved in making bold changes happen and i knew that i could make a difference in pete buttigiegcampaign here. When i moved out here, i had no idea what to expect. All i had was a dented up suzuki, a car they do not even make anymore. A couple of suitcases, my wonderful dog named jeff and an eagerness to select a candidate who can heal the divides of the nation and begin a new american era. From the first day i stepped foot in carson city to work for this campaign i felt like i , belonged here. There was a community of supporters already talking to their neighbors every week and that grew day after day to include everyone and create a Diverse Coalition of americans defined by belonging. Today, i stand here in front of you as a firstgeneration a mome student, born to who waited tables and a dead who fixed vacuum cleaners to make ends meet. No matter sorry, no matter who you are or where you come from, you are welcomed here. Whether youre going to early vote tomorrow from 10 00 a. M. To 8 00 p. M. At the Carson Community center or you are making the trip to your caucus location saturday, there is a place for you on this campaign. I am inviting you to join us in spreading the word about pete, the candidate who will unite this divided nation and make every american feel like a belong in this country. And service to to an equitable and inclusive america make him the best candidate to guide our nation to a new era of belonging and community. With that, help me give a warm welcome to the next president of the United States, pete buttigieg. [applause] mayor buttigieg thank you so much. Thank you to our host. Can you hear me now . It feels so good to campaign outdoors for the first time in a very long time. So thrilled to be with you as we pull into the final days of the nevada portion of the nominating contest. It will help decide the future of the presidency and, therefore, the country. So much depends on getting this right. I am here if you are a supporter to thank you for your support and to urge you to continue sharing this message with everyone you know. If you are still making up your d [laughter] mayor buttigieg i will just have to holler. Oh, there we go. All right. Im here to ask you for your support and to share why, to share the values and the message of this campaign and to share the game plan for moving our country to a better place. It all starts this sunny day with an image that is the guiding image of my campaign. I want to invite you to visualize it yourself, to form it in your mind as specifically as you can, what it will be like the first time the sun comes up over carson city and donald trump is no longer the president of the United States. Are you ready for that day . [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg wont it feel good to put the chaos behind is . Are you ready to put the corruption behind us . Wouldnt it be nice to put the tweets behind us . Sooner rather than later . We have got to bring that day about and this is our chance. It is our only chance to make sure that happens. The good news is the power is in our hands. I know it can be depressing to watch the news sometimes. I know it can be exhausting sometimes to watch the news. But we cannot give in to attempt into the temptation to turn it off and walk away. As frustrating as it was to watch what happened with the senate gop, for example, now is our chance to remember the senate may have been the jury then but the verdict is up to us on this president and the senators who protected him. That is why it is so important to get this right. That we have a nominee who can call as Many Americans as possible into a shared vision of a better future. When i talk about how much we need a new president , it does not feel like a partisan sentiment anymore. Not only do i have fellow diehard democrats who want to bring that about, but i meet so ts who aredependen lined up on our side and even a lot of low like to call future former republicans who come to our event and who are welcome to join us in this effort. Our campaign is not defined by whose help we reject or who we turn away. We are never going to say, just because you did not agree with those 100 of the time that we do not belong together. We have got to come together and get this done. If it is a world where you have to choose between a revolution or a status quo, it does not sound like a world where you belong you belong in this , campaign. We will turn the page and bring better politics to washington. [applause] buttigieg but that will take a different approach. Some folks say to me, what makes you think you can run for president . You are a mayor and have not spent years and decades marinating in the ways of washington. To which i say, that is very much the point. We have got to bring a better voice to washington. We have also got to have a candidate ready to go to toe with this president. Whot you think a president talks about forgotten men and women but has only kept one economic promise, to cut taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Dont you think he ought to have to compete with someone who actually lives and works in a middleclass neighborhood in the middle of the industrial midwest . Dont you think a president who tries to cloak his own misconduct in the garb of religion i mean, this president [laughter] mayor buttigieg ought to be held to account by someone who is not afraid to call out with fellow believers that god does not belong to a party and that god belongs to every party and every religion equally. [applause] mayor buttigieg dont you think a president given to tough talk and chest thumping and throwing himself military parades but who avoided serving when it was his turn ought to have to defend against somebody who wore the uniform for this country and is not afraid to explain why supporting the troops means and ending endless wars . [applause] mayor buttigieg that is why this is the campaign that will put an end to the trump presidency. Here is the real reason i ask you to visualize that sunrise, the day the presidency is in the past. I believe that is the day the work begins. That is the day we have to galvanize and not polarize an american majority that is not just coming to an agreement on who it is we are against in the white house but even more powerfully unified when it comes to what we are for, what we want to see happen in this country together. There is an american majority right now committed to making sure we act to ensure there is no such thing as an uninsured american when it comes to health care in the United States. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg an american majority right now who agrees it makes no sense for giant corporations to make zero in federal income taxes wants to , raise wages, empower workers, and see to it that one is enough in the United States of america, whether you have a College Degree or not. [applause] mayor buttigieg an american majority that understands that the Housing Affordability crisis cannot go on and that we need federal leadership to make sure that everyone has security when it comes to having a roof over their head in this country. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg a majority insisting that we take the steps now in our time to see to it that this become a country where your race has no bearing on your health, wealth, Life Expectancy or your experience with law enforcement. [applause] mayor buttigieg a majority that recognizes that immigration is the lifeblood of the country. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg [speaking spanish] that this country for dreamers is your country, too. A historic american majority insisting we do something now to make sure we are ready to talk about and act on Mental Health and Substance Abuse issues just as we would any other medical concerns. [applause] mayor buttigieg a majority committed to our future which means investing in a future generation and supporting those who educate them with a secretary of education who actually believes in Public Education and supports our teachers and our community colleges. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg the American People are already ready for this to happen. We have got to start to get washington to actually reflect what the American People are insisting on and this is our chance to do it. Not just that. I think the American People are also ready for a president you can see on television and actually feel your Blood Pressure go down a little bit instead of up through the roof. [laughter] mayor buttigieg but alongside a sense of just a little more calm and forbearance must come a sense of urgency because we cannot wait. These changes cannot wait four years or 10 years. We have got to act now. I am reminded not just by the voters were meeting but the americans who are not yet old enough to vote. Who deserve better leadership. An 11yearold came to one of my events and asked about Prescription Drug affordability. My first thought was, that is pretty cool, we have an emerging policy buff at the age of 11. Then he shared why he was asking. He was worried about whether he would be able to access the insulin he needs in order to live. That should not be his problem. He should not have to wait for us to deliver a day when there is no such thing as an unaffordable prescription in the United States of america. We have to act now. It cannot wait. [applause] mayor buttigieg a 13yearold let me know she asked for a kevlar backpack for christmas. The time has come for us to demonstrate that we get that the Second Amendment is no excuse to do absolutely nothing when it comes to protecting lives from gun violence in this country. [applause] mayor buttigieg when a kid comes to an event of mine this tall wearing a blue tie and white shirt and very diplomatically points out that he is planning to be here in the year 2100 and when he is, he will be looking back on the choices we made right now and see whether we did what it took to secure a climate future for him to thrive in before it was too late, he cannot wait for us to leave the world on climate change. This is our chance. [applause] mayor buttigieg these are the changes i believe we can only deliver with the presidency in the right hands. That is why i am asking for your support. I am not running for this of us because i got into my head one day i would like to occupy it. Thelieve has a purpose. We have gathered up your questions. He is going to guide the conversation. All right. You thought you were done with me. Mary buttigieg my buttigieg dont we have the nicest staffers . The first question we have is, what is the plan in case trump will not exit the white house . Obviously, in parentheses, after you win. Mayor buttigieg that would make to if awkward move in day he really does not want to leave, we can work something out, but he would have to do his chores. I would not be counting on it. Apart, the legitimacy of our elections is part of what has come under attack and part of what we have to defend. We have to make sure we establish there is first of all there is only one president at a , time, but also this is why i believe it is important for us only eat out a win but to build a powerful majority. You do not want to explain this president s behavior to your children. We can build a big enough majority that the selection is not even within cheating distance. We should because that is the only way to send a political neededave that will be to reunite senate gop members with their contents. I am determined to build the biggest Coalition Possible so that we win big. [applause] brady the next one we have here is, how will infrastructure be a priority in your administration . Mayor buttigieg this is music to a mayors ears whenever infrastructure comes up. First of all, we cannot continue to tolerate crumbling and deteriorating roads and bridges. It will take federal funding to do something about it. I am proposing 1 trillion of investment. If that sounds like a lot, it it is it is, but it is a lot cheaper than allowing things to continue the way they are. Infrastructure is not just about shiny and new exciting things. It is about taking care of basics. A lot of questions of racial and Economic Justice are at stake in infrastructure. Just ask the residents of the city of flint. Water is supposed to be so reliable that anyone who does not work at the waterworks should take it for granted. When that is not true, your family is endangered. We saw that happen and it disproportionately happens in low income communities and it disproportionately happens to families of color. Community,in my own we faced huge lead challenges. Infrastructure should involve lead remediation so we do not have a future generation have opportunities robbed for the rest of their lives. Part of infrastructure means digital infrastructure. That is why propose we make sure every american is connected to highquality broadband you need in order to succeed and thrive. I know in the west, there is an understanding of the need to make sure we are managing water and wastewater and access to resources better than we have been. That means investing in conservation, technology, and negotiating fair and equitable water sharing agreements not just among states but with tribes so were finally managing lands in a way that is consistent with what future generations would expect. [applause] brady as president , how will so you address native american criminal justice systems in this country . Mayor buttigieg give a shout so im looking in the right direction. Thank you. As we know, tribal sovereignty is not always respected when it comes to criminal justice, particularly the way jurisdiction is taken out of the hands of tribal authorities. If we want to confront issues like the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women, and if we are just plain serious about these sovereign relationships between the United States and tribes, and taking care of those who are u. S. And tribal citizens, we need to change this. Supreme Court Decisions that eroded tribal sovereignty, and i will appoint judges and justices who understand Tribal Affairs in addition to making sure we back legislation to fix these issues so no one is any less safe and no local authorities are any less empowered just because they are in indian country. [cheers and applause] brady to paraphrase, you said we need to make it affordable to go to college and afford will not to. Could you elaborate . Mayor buttigieg for sure. Give a holler so im looking in the right direction. Here is how we make sure it is affordable to go to college. There you are. Thanks for coming. We need a state federal partnership to make sure college cost is never a barrier. Making sure we have more support. Under my plan, tuition would be free for about 80 of americans. We have a sliding scale past that. If you are in the top income bracket, i wish you well in your studies but i want you to pay your tuition so we can save precious tax dollars for other purposes but the idea is to make sure caused never gets in the way. Debt, ple do emerge with and we have a much more generous plan for loan forgiveness for things like Public Service. We have to make that way more userfriendly. [applause] mayor buttigieg the reason i talk about making it more affordable to not go to college in this country is that not everybody will or wants to. What message are we sending if a College Degree is the only ticket to prosperity . Where i live, three out of four residents do not have a College Degree and they deserve just as much as anyone else to live well and to be generous in church and Little League and wherever they want to and we have to be an economy for that. The middle class is undermined by attacks on organized labor. We have got low income earners suffering the fact that the minimum wage, if you figure in inflation has been cut over the , years and it is why we need 15 to be the floor on the minimum wage in this country. [applause] buttigieg mayor buttigieg it is why we need to invest in the affordability of life in america. Even when the wages are not going up, it is not keeping up. The cost of retirement housing, health care, that is why we have to act on prescription affordability. On howa plan out today we act on making sure there is more Affordable Housing for everyone in this country, knowing what a crisis level the housing has gotten too. That housing has gotten to. Ensuring employers do their part whether you are fulltime or whether they call you a contractor, if youre doing the work, you are a worker and you ought to be protected with benefits with all of the things needed to do well. Whether you have a College Degree or not. [applause] brady how do you plan on addressing how k12 public teachers are paid in this country . Mayor buttigieg as the spouse of a middle school teacher, i have strong views on this. First of all, we are asking so much more of teachers than ever. I have seen how teachers take on the responsibility of the wellbeing of their students dip , into Bank Accounts to buy school supplies. Often are asked to handle Mental Health challenges that students are facing without any of the resources to do it. Now you have some politicians , expecting teachers to transform into highly trained armed guards if there is a threat to the school. Meanwhile we are not , compensating this profession in a way that matches the cost of being qualified to do it and also how important it is. It starts with something important and simple. Teachers should get paid more. We can do that. [applause] mayor buttigieg we have got to back them up by elevating the way we regard the profession. I am proposing an education which allows , teachers to commit to title i schools, to go to programs that have a transferable license to take anywhere in the country and have all of their debt forgiven. [applause] Buttigieg Infrastructure means investing in school infrastructure, making sure there is a quality environment for students to work in. And it means making sure we are not over reliant on standardized testing and the job of teachers gets automated away when teachers have so much to bring. Brady what are you doing to protect people who are not documented throughout this country . Mayor buttigieg in our community, and you may not think of this when you think of indiana, mine is a city that lost almost a quarter of its people after the factories closed. Now, our city is growing. We are so proud of the fact it is a positive number. That is almost entirely the result of immigration, making a difference in the families and neighborhoods and businesses of our community. Many of them are undocumented. In particular, i am meeting kids sometimes somebody i already , know as a leader or important active volunteer in our community, who will come out as undocumented and let me know that in addition to all of the work they are doing to be a part of the life of the community, they have uncertainty hanging over their head of the threat of deportation including dreamers where this is the only country they know. This is not something making america stronger right now. The time has come for us to deliver real Immigration Reform starting with a path to citizenship. [applause] mayor buttigieg lets get it right because we have not had a real fix since the 1980s. That means you see country caps on quotas and things set based on the way the economy immigration system is willing to allow. People come and then they are endangered, of all the uncertainties that come with being undocumented in the country, though they are often paying taxes taxes and contribute in so many ways. They want activities and then there are big reforms we have to do. Day one, we go to the border and start managing in a way that matches our values with humanity and compassion, as well as security. No such thing as a forprofit to for detention when im president. Then we understand reforms from a pathway to citizenship to full protections for dreamers to fixing the lawful immigration system like how my dad got here. If that were working, we would not have 11 million undocumented people in this country. The American People want it to happen. We need a president willing to force the merck and senate to do with the people want. What the people want. [applause] brady how will you bring the country together after you are voted in as president . Mayor buttigieg i like the premise of the question. The part of the job of the president is to unify the country. It does not mean everyone will agree. No two people in this space agree on everything. But when you are mayor, one thing you learn very quickly about your job is you are a walking symbol of the unity of your city. You remind people that even if you didnt they did not vote for you, people who are diverse and have different experiences, they have at least one thing in common, that they belong to the same community. So much more so for the president. The part costing us the most living under this president on top of the policies and the management that is not very good, is the absence of that voice to remind us that you ought to be able to look at the president even if you disagree and remind us that the presidency and the country belong to you. I take that responsibility seriously. I believe there are policy steps we can take to help. When i was deployed, i was with people who were totally different from me. Different politically for sure. Racially, generationally, from different parts of the country. Yet we learned to trust each other. If you are getting in my vehicle and going on outside the wire road trip, you did not care if i was going home to a girlfriend or a boyfriend. You care file as a democrat or a republican or what dad you care if i studied the intelligence reefing the night before. Before. Ing the night we had a job to do. [applause] we learned to trust each other with our lives. I want every american to get the chance to connect with others without having to go to war to get it. A million paid volunteer National Service opportunities a year for people to have experience with fellow americans doing the same thing. [applause] mayor buttigieg that is one example of a program that could make a difference but it is not about just policies and programs. It is about the message i will work to send everyday. As you who live out the values of the campaign, calling others in and respecting those we disagree with, have been able to show and not just tell that we can be a better country by building a politics that revolves around the idea of belonging and not exclusion. That is the only way forward in my view. [applause] brady this is our last question. Regarding assault weapons bans, with the amount of gun owners who will likely resist compliance, how will you peacefully increment these policies, considering talks of civil war some republicans have, in short, how do we avoid violence and how would 9 noncompliance be handled . Mayor buttigieg the first thing we have to remember is we see to it that the Government Works for us and stead of the other way around. It is your vote. It is our democracy. And our democracy is actively under attack. If we let them undermine our democracy, a garage full of ars will not help. Democracy comes first. I also believe we can take commonsense steps beginning with a ban on new sales of assault weapons, even if we have not worked out some other things we need to do. We cannot let the perfect become the enemy of the good right now. The vast majority of americans agree, republicans and gun owners agree we should at least be doing background checks and red flag loss. Laws. We have got be willing to draw a line somewhere. Some folks think that the constitution means you cannot have any limit on any weapon. We have already decided that is not the case. Anyone can have a water balloon. Nobody can have a nuclear weapon. Somewhere as a society, we choose to draw a line. What most americans believe is we have to draw the line a little tighter. The kinds of weaponry i train on to serve in the military have no business being sold for profit anywhere near an american school, community center. Lets start there and come together. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg one more time for brady forgot he the discussion and representing the community so well. [applause] mayor buttigieg a big thank you to everyone here for joining us. Hopefully you now understand what i believe is at stake and why im asking for your support. If you believe in the vision of this campaign, take it to those in your life who may have decided to just walk away and switch it off because it is so exciting. Exhausting. This of all times is the time we have to get more involved and not less. The most powerful thing in the world to persuade someone is not seeing an ad or a speech from me. It is hearing a word from you, from someone already in your life. That is how organizing works and how campaigning works. You have a chance and everyone here has a chance to do that. I am asking you to bottle up whatever sense of hope brought you here. I would argue you are here because you are compelled by some amount of hope, otherwise, you would not come. Being here is an expression of the hope that it matters on who gets their hands on the levers of American Government and what values guide those hands. That is why i am here. I think there is a very good reason they took the word hopeful and turned it into a noun and on the news, they use it as another word for a candidate . I am a 2020 hopeful. How fitting. Running for office is an expression of hope that it really matters and we really can make our everyday lives better based on who is making decisions in those big white buildings and washington, d. C. Spread that hope to those you know. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg are you ready for the mountain sunrise when we put this presidency behind us . [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg are you ready to vote early and make history on saturday in the caucus . [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg i think you will help make me the next president of the United States and if you do, i will work every day to make you proud. Thank you. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg thank you so much. Thank you. Im sorry. [indistinct conversations] come on the risin wind, were goin up around the bend yeah this land is your land this land is my land from california to the new york island.
