My weight today . Good evening and welcome to the 2019 liberty and justice celebration hosted by the Iowa Democratic party. For our floor guests, dinner is now served. Betty ering] thank you. Iowaank you to the entire Democratic Party team. It is an honor to be at your liberty and justice dinner. It is even a bigger honor to be in a room full of committed democrats. Including two mentors of mine, this gentleman, mr. Chairman, senator, mentor, tom, can you please stand up one more time . [crowd cheering] tom thank you. Forcan we please give it up your former governor, my former cabinet colleague and a life log mentor. Lifelong mentor, thank you governor. [crowd cheering] again, a big shout out to your congressional delegation, thank you so much, abby, and cindy storming to victory because you guys knocked on doors. They lead with their values, thank you. Thank you to my friend, thank you for my or service congressman. Thank you for everything you have done and best of luck. You do not know what the word retirement is. You will be knocking on doors every single day for democrats. Thank you. Is the one year mark from the most important election of our lifetime. Differently, one year until the weekend. One year until the weekend and less than 100 days until the most transparent successful, accessible caucus in the history of the great state of bio law. We are proud to be with you, proud to be a part of it. We are organizing everywhere and investing everywhere, we are here for one reason, because we are democrats, each and every one of us. One family, one team. And we have one year to defeat the worst president in the history of our country. [crowd cheering] , it is important to remember you are here not just because you love your candidate, you are here because you love urination as well. And, we want to take it back, and we will take it back. And there are three things that we know for sure coming into tonight. Number one, we have an amazing bench of remarkable candidates. Let us give it up for all of them. [applause] talent,e got game, their values are our values. Number two, there will be one and only nominee one nominee. One person will make it to the mountaintop mountaintop. Can we give a special round of applause to beto orourke who in a Spirited Campaign he wears his passion on his sleeve, thank you for stepping up. Thank you for everything you have done and everything you fight for. Number two. That was number two, number three. No matter who makes it to the mountaintop, we will come together and support them. We will sought we will come together and support him or her. That is what we are focused on, folks. Uniting the party, and building the best possible team to take on donald trump. Because we know something, our unity is our greatest strength, and frankly it is Donald Trumps worst fear. [crowd cheering] every candidate to support our eventual nominee, and i am absolutely confident that they will campaign with enthusiasm, because you know what . Every single candidate you will hear from tonight, every single candidate running for president is not about them. It is about our democracy, about something bigger, we are at a fork in the road. They understand that. We are training organizers across the country so our nominee, whoever he or she is, i love saying that. No matter who he or she is, because we are the most diverse field in American History. We are training an army of organizers so that they are ready to go. We have developed a talent bank of resumes for staffers and campaigns so that our nominee will have the best and brightest pool of talent. We launched a fund with my formal bought former boss starting that. I guy named barack obama. Anyone else miss barack obama . [crowd cheering] run and we will continue to a fair and campaign and transparent primary process. We have put the grassroots front and center in that process. Int is how barack obama won 2008 and 2012, and that is how we will win in 2020. And, by the way, iowa is a battleground state, take that to the bank. Of this, because incredible surge of grassroots energy, we have seen a surge of support and engagement. You probably heard about lou, if not, blue if you have they reported that their biggest our of mobile giving biggesthour of mobile giving took place during the second hour of the september democratic primary debate. That was their biggest our. Candidatesrds, our are inspiring voters. They have more unique donors in 2019 and 2017 and 2018 combined. Everywhere, and that is why i know that we will rally around our nominee. Why is that . Because we share the same values. That is what unites us. As democrats we know that america is at its best when we show kindness and compassion, not cruelty and prejudice. I had the privilege of attending the Funeral Service last friday of Elijah Cummings, a feral a fellow marylander. Can we give it up for Elijah Cummings . [applause] as barack obama said during his stirring eulogy, there is nothing weak about compassion and kindness. We should always remember that. As incredibleeld and deep as our field, you may not see your first choice when the nomination, that i am here to tell you something, your second, third, seventh, 17th of ae, everybody is a hell lot better than donald trump, 100 difference. Every single candidate, folks. Know, i will go a step further. I bet you could walk down the middle of 5th avenue and find a stranger and that person would be better than donald trump. [crowd cheering] you, donaldtell trump is not only the most dangerous president in American History, he is a symptom, remember that. He is a symptom of a Republican Party in moral decay. The party of lincoln is dead, it has been replaced by the party of trump, and joni ernst, and steve king, and folks, do not boo, vote. Lady, and theyt go low, we go high. When they go low, we go vote. When they go lower, we get all of our friends to vote. Joni ernst sees the handwriting on the wall. The other day she admitted that she is worried that democrats are going to unseat her next year. She is one of the most unpopular senators in the country. No secret why, look at her record. She told voters in a campaign ad that she was going to come to washington and go after the big spenders. What did she do . She voted to give tax cuts to big corporations that added billions of dollars to our deficits. She has gone after health care for iowans with preexisting conditions. She has stood by the appalling silence. Farmers know through a once in a lifetime crisis, exacerbated by this president s reckless policies. This president is chronically ineffective. Everything he touches he makes worse. Andis a trump puppet plain simple. Next year, today is jobs day. When i was labor secretary first friday of the month we would report unemployment. The first friday of january 2021 we will report the unemployment of joni ernst. That is what we are going to do. [crowd cheering] and then there is steve king. [crowd booing] only todisgrace, not iowa, but to america. All the isms in the book. And this is a man who said White Supremacy wasnt offensive, this is a man who downplayed rape and incensed and advocated for a complete ban on a womans right to abortion. This is a man who called immigrants dirt. Folks, mr. King, my parents were not dirt. Dirt, no humant being is dirt, mr. King. [crowd cheering] Lance Corporal who is a gutierrez is not dirt. Was anorporal gutierrez immigrant from guatemala, came to this country, undocumented, got his status adjusted, enlisted in the army because he loved this country. He listed as the legal as a legal immigrant. He was the first fatality in the most recent war in iraq. He is not dirt, mr. King. [crowd cheering] tom it is no coincidence that steve king shares the same name as one of americas most famous tar novelists. Because he is one hell of a nightmare, i will tell you. Stephen king wrote a book about an evil clown. I think Steve Scully Steve king is that evil clown. Unfortunately, the nightmares that republicans like steve king create are not fiction, they are very real. They are a danger to the people of iowa and the people across america. And all across this country the a lican party is pushing is attacking farmers, women, health care, destroying our environment and leaving farmers to pick up the pieces. At every single turn the president has broken his promises. He promised to help farmers, he promised. Moreesident he has given ethanol waivers to big oil. That is not helping farmers, that is slapping them in the face. Mr. President , actions speak louder than words, and your actions show you are no friends of the american farmers, to workers, or the American People. Ourpresident , canada is friend, russia is not. [crowd cheering] i was a pell grant kid. I used to work on the back of a trash truck to make money in college. I know garbage when i see it. This administration is one big dumpster fire. [crowd cheering] it is time for democratic leadership, nothing less than the fate of our democracy is at stake. In these critical moments for our country, the American People have always looked to the Democratic Party to solve our problems and move our nation forward. Democrats have always been dreamers and doers. We are the party that dreamed of a new deal in which seniors could retire with dignity, workers could form a union, and people would have social security. We dreamed of putting a man on the moon, and we did it. We believed in the automobile industry, and we saved it. Thank you, barack obama. Thank you, democrats. No thanks to republicans. We inherited a great recession, and we ended it. That is what happens when you put democrats in charge, because we put our values into action. Democrats are fighting to combat Climate Change, protect a womans right to choose, to ensure that the secretary of education believes in public education. [applause] we are fighting for civil rights, democratic rights, labor rights, voting rights, our native american brothers and sisters, lgbtq brothers and sisters, brothers and sisters with disabilities, you are all part of the american family. Democrats are fighting for an america that works for everyone, not just the few at the top. We have your back, every single one of us, every single candidate running in this primary has your back, and every single candidate would make an excellent president , and that is why i am so excited. So, folks, as i close, i used to work for ted kennedy. I will always be a permanent member of the kennedy extended family, and at times like this, i am reminded of something his brother bobby said over half a century ago to farmworkers, with cesar chavez at his side, Bobby Kennedy told the workers in the height of the Civil Rights Movement that they stood at a defining moment in history, a moment that he called a pointed and danger that would ultimately determine our countrys fate and our future. He said and i quote, when your children and grandchildren take their place in america, you will say, i did this. You will say, i marched. You will say, i fought. Folks, we are at that point of difficulty and danger. This is what my mom and date you to say a where were moment. This is where your children and grandchildren will be asking you years from now, what did you do . Because of the energy in this room and leadership of our candidates, i am proud to say that you will be able to say, i did this. I was there. I defeated donald trump. I helped elect a majority united majority democratic United States senate. I helped expand Nancy Pelosis majority in the house. We took back statehouses across that the country. We have more secretaries of state, more state auditors. That is what we did, but we have to do it together. Lets seize the moment together, lets make this the most accessible, attended, successful, and energetic caucus in state history and then on to battleground iowa, where we win in november. Lets unify. If you want to learn more, text y to 43367 so we can join this fight together. Thank you. Lets go forward. We are all in this together \ stand up keep fighting nowhere left to go standing on your own we are all in this together [cheers and applause] announcer please welcome to the stage, mayor pete buttigieg. Mayor buttigieg thank you. Mayor buttigieg thank you. Mayor buttigieg thank you, iowa. Thank you so much. [cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg thank you. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg thank you, iowa. Thank you, Iowa Democratic party. Thank you, fellow democrats. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg the first time i came to this state was as a volunteer to knock on doors for a president ial candidate, a young man with a funny name. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg and we knew the stakes were high then, the stakes are colossal now. This country cannot afford four more years of donald trump. We will not recognize it if he gets reelected. We know what is at stake. And we know that he will do everything he can to hold onto power, but if you nominate me, his playbook is not going to work this time around. [cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg see, i dont get helicoptered into a golf course with my name on it while pretending to care about the working class. I dont even golf. I get around in a chevy that was built in ohio by the very same workers this president has let down. And i dont go to work in an office in washington, d. C. My office is about six hours that way down i80. Here in the midwest. And out the window, i see the outlines of our ethanol plant, which is why i understand the measure of this president s betrayal of american farmers, and i know how to talk about it. And i dont ask to throw myself a military parade to see what a convoy looks like. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg because i was driving one around afghanistan a right around the time he was taking season seven of the celebrity apprentice. So that kind of talk is not going to work against me. But i did not just come here to end the era of donald trump, i am here to launch the era that must come next. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg because in order to win, and in order to lead, it will take a lot more than the Political Warfare we have come to accept from washington, d. C. We already have a divider inchief. I am offering you a white house you can look at on the news and feel your Blood Pressure go down a little bit instead of through the roof. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg i am asking you to picture that first day the sun comes up in this country and donald trump is no longer the president of the United States. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg a happy thought, for sure, and as to the chaos,an end to the corruption, tantrums and tweets, but what comes next . The sun will come up over a country even more divided and torn up over politics than we are today, with crises that still require urgent action, a 14yearold will be waiting for action, who wrote me to tell me she has written out a will because she is afraid her next day at school might be her last, a 12yearold will be waiting for action, who asked me about health care, not because she is a young policy buff, but because she has juvenile diabetes and is afraid her parents will lose their coverage. I am running to be the president who will stand amid the rubble, pick up the pieces of our divided nation, and lead us towards real action to do right by americans who have waited far too long. [cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg i am ready to gather up an american majority that is hungry for change, that is done with the division, and i have seen that hunger across the country, places you might not expect. In shenandoah, iowa, where a young man from a farm family stood up to ask me what role agriculture would play in ending Climate Change. I have seen it in granger, indiana with a diner filled up with conservative republicans protesting the deportation of a neighbor they knew to be a good man. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg and i will be seeing it in a few weeks on the morning of thanksgiving day, because in 2019 in rural michigan, you cannot stop a man from going deer hunting with his husbands father. We are ready to build this majority, a Majority Ready to deliver the most progressive reform to health care in 50 years, medicare for all who want it, honoring your decision over whether and when you want it. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg a majority, even in the red states, to do something about gun violence, to do something about Climate Change. To ensure the dignity of every american, to tackle systemic racism wherever we find it until your race in this country has no bearing on your health, wealth, yourexpectancy, or relationship with law enforcement. The people are ready to get this done, to stand with our teachers. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg to let people of faith know that in our white wont have to shake your head and ask yourself, what happened to, i was hungry and you fed me. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. For whatever you did to the least of these, you did to me. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg i will not waiver from my commitment to our values or back down from the boldness of our ideas, but i also will not tire from the effort to include everyone in this future we are trying to build. S, moderates, and republicans of conscience ready for change, the time has come. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg we will fight when we must fight, but i will never allow us to get so wrapped up in the fighting that we start to think fighting is the point. The point is what lies on the other side of the fight. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg and what lies on the other side of that fight is the hope of an American Experience defined not by exclusion but by belonging. That is what we are here to deliver. And if talking about hope and belonging sounds optimistic for a time like this, call it optimistic, but do not call it naive, because i believe these things not based on my age, but based on my experience. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg iowa, i have seen in a war zone americans who have nothing in common besides the flags on our shoulders learn to trust each other with our lives. I have seen in the ruins of factories my city answer those who said we were a dying community by rising up together to build a better future. I have seen what america can do, and so have you. After all, you are looking at someone who as a young man growing up wondered if something deep inside of him meant he would forever be an outsider, would never wear the uniform, never be accepted, never know love, and now you are looking at that same young man, a veteran, a mayor, happily married, asking for your vote for president of the United States. [cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg that is why i believe in this country. Iowans, i am asking for you to caucus for me on february 3 because i know what the presidency is for, because we know the purpose of the presidency is not the glorification of the president , it is the unification of the American People. That is why we have the office. [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg so, iowa, are you ready to bring this country together . Are you ready to turn the page to a new era together . [cheers and applause] mayor buttigieg then let has make history together, and we will have a lot to celebrate in november of next year, and we will know where to go from there. Thank you, iowa. Thank you, democrats. Thank you so much. [cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] announcer put your hands together for Vice President joe biden. We take care of our own Vice President biden thank you, thank you, thank you. Hello, iowa democrats. Let me get right to it. You all know this election is more important than anyone you have voted in, no matter what your age. It is not because of those of us who are running, but because of the man who holds the office. The very character of america is on the ballot next november, the very character of the country, and donald trump is a genuine threat, a man lacking in the character we need. You know, folks, hate, hate only hides, it never leads. And this is a man who has employed it in a way that gives it oxygen, and it comes out from under the rocks, pollutes everything. This is a man who started his Campaign Based on hate and division, dividing people in ways that we have not been divided before. This is a man who has embraced tyrants and dictators, a man who has looked at people like kim has looked at people like kim jongun as well as Vladimir Putin and embraced them. This is a man who poked his finger in the eyes of our allies. There are a couple of things i learned the last couple of weeks. Number one is that Vladimir Putin doesnt want me to be president. [applause] Vice President biden and number two, donald trump doesnt want me to be the nominee. [applause] Vice President biden spent a lot of money to make sure i am not. I am flattered. I am flattered. Folks, look, we have got to, we have got to beat this man. It is not enough, it is not enough that we just beat him, we have got to beat him soundly, so everyone knows we are not going back to a time when another president like him can hold that office. And we must beat him. And i will beat him like a drum if i am your nominee, and he knows it. He knows it. Folks, look, you all know that saidis a man who, as i gives hate a little oxygen and , it comes up from the rocks, but he is breathing nothing but oxygen into hate. Look what happened. Look what happened in charlottesville. The people coming out of the woods and fields carrying torches, preaching hate and division, met by people who opposed it, and someone was killed. When he was asked to comment on that, what did he say . He said there were very fine people on both sides. No president , no president in American History has ever said that, including Andrew Johnson before the civil war. Look, folks, i learned something early on from my family and my mom and dad. They said, joey, nobody is better than you, but everyone is your equal. Everyone is your equal. Folks, think about it. Think about how we are treating people. Think about how he has treated people. Look, my dad used to say, it is all about dignity. Your dignity. You know, i said after charlottesville that we are in a battle for the sole of america. And we are. We are in a battle for the sole of america. And folks, if you doubt it, think about it. The middleclass is under siege. And it is the soul of america, the middle class. Wall street bankers did not build america. The middleclass built america and unions built the middleclass. [applause] Vice President biden folks, how can a parent maintain their dignity when they look at a child with a preexisting condition and tell them they cannot afford to get insurance for them . How can a parent maintain their dignity when they have a child or husband or wife who is terminally ill and the Insurance Company can come along and say, sorry, you have run out of coverage. Die in peace. On your own. How can a parent, how can a parent have their dignity . That is why we have to build on the Affordable Care act, not abandon it. That is why we have to provide a public option. That is why we have to make sure everyone has access. Ladies and gentlemen, we can do this. We can do it quickly. Without taxing the middle class. We can make sure that the 160 Million People who have Health Insurance they like can keep it if they want. And if not, they can buy in to a medicarelike proposal. Ladies and gentlemen, that will not take four years or five years or 10 years to happen. It will happen immediately. Immediately. [applause] Vice President biden folks, and there would be no increase in taxes for the middle class. None. None. None. How can a parent maintain their dignity looking at their talented child who has real opportunities to go on to school and have to look at them and say, like many people did this honey, we cannot borrow the money. We cannot figure out how to get you there. There is nothing we can do. Im just sorry. That is why we have to change the way my wife, jill, is with me. She has an express in. She teaches fulltime. She has an expression, any country that outeducates us can beat us. 12 years of education is no longer enough to make it in them in a class. That is what we have to triple the amount of money we spend for title i schools. Pay teachers 60,000. Making sure every child can go to preschool. Making sure Community Colleges free. Making sure those who have debt, college debt, if they volunteer, if they engage in public service, their debt can be forgiven. Ladies and gentlemen, that is what we can do. It is within our power. How can we look at our children this quintessential issue facing america is Climate Change and we are doing nothing about it. How can we walk into a situation where, today, children went to school today, learning how to duck and cover because they may get shot in school. Hey, honey, how are you . May get shot in school. Talk about a troubled soul in a country. That is trouble. We have to go out and take on the n. R. A. And beat them. And i am the only one who has beaten them nationally. If you make me your nominee, i i will beat them again. I have beaten them twice and i will be them again. Assault rifles. There is no room for them in america. They should be outlawed, as i did once. In addition to that, magazines holding 40 or 50 or 60 or 100 bullets, god almighty, what rationale can there be for that. That is a sick system. Ladies and gentlemen, when you talk about Climate Change, the first thing i will do as your president is rejoined the Paris Climate Accord which i helped put together. I will invite within the first hundred days, the 173 nations that joined that at our organization and up the ante on them to make sure they keep it. I will make sure that we put in place the Climate Change plan, and by the way, they make up 85 of the problem. We make up 15 . What we will do under my proposal, we will have net zero emissions by 2050. And lock in standards that cannot be changed this decade. Ladies and gentlemen, how can we talk about not restoring the soul of america we do not do that . Think about the way we work now. As i said, why in gods name should a firefighter, school teacher, nurse, pay at a tax rate higher than a bond trader making millions of bucks . It is wrong. Under my proposal, i promise you, we will begin to reward work not wealth. We are going to change fundamentally the tactics. Ladies and gentlemen. We are in a situation where the next president of the United States is going to face a divided nation as well as a world in chaos. And it is going to require a president on day one who can unite the country, who has experience being able to put together major initiatives to bring the country together. I know some of my colleagues say that is naive. Well, i have done it. That has been my whole career. And i promise you i know how to do it. And i will do it again. [applause] Vice President biden because let me tell you, if you cannot bring the country together, we are in real, real trouble. Ladies and gentlemen, think about it. The next president is going to be commanderinchief of the world in disarray. Theres going to be no time for onthejob training. You had better, the day you are sworn in, be able to command the world stage, knowing that our allies know you know what youre doing and are with them and will keep your word. And your enemies know that you are for real and you will keep your word. [applause] Vice President biden folks, look, the United States of america is so much better prepared to own the 21st century than any nation in the world. We are the wealthiest country in the world. We have the most productive our workers are three times as productive as workers in asia. Every major change that has taken place has come out of a Great Research university, and in there more of them United States than the rest of the world combined. So what are we doing . Im so tired of democrats republicans Walking Around their head down asking what are we going to do. The first thing we have to do is get rid of donald trump, get him out of office. Once we do that, the road is clear for significant change. There is no reason why we will not lead the world in the 21st century. It is time for americans to lift their heads up and remember who we are. This is the United States of america. We have never, never, never failed to accomplish what we set our minds to once we have decided what were going to do. It is time to decide. It is time to move. [applause] Vice President biden and folks, heres the deal. The only thing that stands in the way is donald trump. The only thing. And folks, the reason he is spending so much money with his henchmen running ads against me in a primary is because he knows that i will beat him and beat him like a drum. I promise you. So ladies and gentlemen, get up. Remember who we are. Lets take this country back and begin to lead the world again. Thank you, thank you. Thank you, iowa. Thank you we take care of our own [cheers and applause] announcer please welcome andrew yang. Andrew yang thank, iowa. Thank you so much. And thank you, yang gang. [cheers and applause] andrew yang i love campaigning in iowa, because this is one of the only places in the entire country where democracy still works. As it is intended. [cheers and applause] andrew yang you know this, but i do not know if you realize just how much power is in this room tonight. [cheers and applause] andrew yang i did the math, iowa. Do you know how many californians each of you is worth . 1000 californians each. [cheers and applause] andrew yang when i look around this arena tonight, i do not see just 14,000 iowans. Ic 14 million californians. That is the power in this room, the power to change the course of history. That is why it is a thrill to be back here and a privilege to address you all. Candidatesidential but i am also a parent and a dad. How many of you are parents . My wife is here with us tonight. We have two young boys. Christopher and damien. I am running for president because of a thought that the parents in this room have had but we have been afraid to express. It is this. Our kids are not all right. They are not all right because we have left them a future darker than the lives we have led as their parents. Many of you think of me as a business guy. But for the last seven years, i have been a nonprofit guy. I started a nonprofit called venture for america that helped create thousands of jobs in cities like detroit, cleveland, st. Louis, baltimore. And you know what i saw during the seven years . I saw millions of young people who are not starting families, let alone businesses, because they cannot pay their bills. I saw millions of people buried under a mound of debt and trapped in their parents basements. I saw record high levels of anxiety, stress, depression, andal illness, even suicide drug overdoses to the point where our countrys Life Expectancy has declined for three years in a row. First time in 100 years. If you turn on cable news today, why would you think donald trump is our president . Russia, racism, facebook, hillary clinton, emails, all mixed together. But i believe many of you know different. I am a numbers guy. The reason donald trump is our president , the reason he won isr state by eight points that we have lost 40,000 manufacturing jobs in iowa and you saw all of those towns go from blue to red as it happened. That did not just happen in iowa. We did it in michigan, ohio, pennsylvania, wisconsin, missouri, all of the swing States Donald trump needed to win. We blasted away 4 Million Manufacturing jobs. Unfortunately, we are not stopping there. How many have you seen stores close where you work and live in the state . Raise your hands. Why are the Stores Closing . It is a one word answer. Amazon is soaking up 20 billion causingess every year, 30 of your stores and malls to close. How much did amazon pay in federal taxes last year . That is your math. Zero back. 30 of your stores and malls closed. The most common job in your state is retail clerk. 39yearold woman making between 9 and 10 an hour. When her store closes, what is her next move going to be . I am a numbers guy, but you do not need the numbers. You look around your communities. You see it when you walk into the Grocery Store and sell the selfserve see the selfserve kiosks and see the neighbors kids addicted to drugs. You see the headlines were google and uber are working on trucks that can drive themselves. These of the real problems that got donald trump elected. The fact that more and more of us are feeling left behind. Experts are calling this Economic Transformation the Fourth Industrial Revolution. When is the last time you heard a politician even breath the words Fourth Industrial Revolution . Just now, right . And im barely a politician. These are the problems that got donald trump elected. And this is what you must solve. This is how you must use your power. I want you to ask yourselves, how is the menu had never heard of eight months ago speaking after joe and before Elizabeth Warren . [cheers and applause] andrew yang how the man u never heard of before raise 10 million in last quarter in increments of only 30 each . My fans are almost as cheap as bernies. It is because i know what the true nature of the problems are and how we can solve them. And it is up to you to take these solutions to the rest of the country to present a new way forward as fast as possible. What is the vision . If you have heard anything about me and my campaign, you have heard this. There is an asian man running for president who was to give everyone 1000 a month. In the first time you heard that, it sounded like a gimmick. This is not my idea. It is not a new idea. Thomas paine fought for it at our founding. Martin luther king fought for it in the 1960s. Endorsed it. Ts one state passed a dividend where everyone in the state gets between 1000 and 2000 a year, no questions asked. What state is that . And how does alaska pay for it . And what is the oil of the 21st century . Technology, software, selfdriving cars and trucks. Our data is now worth more than oil. Raise your hand if you got your data check in the mail. Where did the data checks go . To facebook, amazon, google, and the chilean Dollar Tech Companies who are paying zero trillion Dollar Tech Companies who are paying zero taxes. Think about those checks in the hands of your neighbors. Lower stress levels. Fewer arguments with your spouse. Being able to retire with dignity. Not having to choose between car repairs and new clothing for your kids. It is not about the money. It is about what it means to us. I have been giving 1000 a month to families around the country for a number of months. I recommend it. One of them is here tonight who lives in iowa falls. Thank you, kyle. Look at that. I am glad you are at the fancy table. Kyle lives in iowa falls with his mom who is recovering from cancer. When i saw kyle on my last strip, he said after he had taken care of some bills, he bought a guitar and was playing shows for the first time in years. For kyle, it was a guitar. For jodey in new hampshire, car appears to visit her daughter. For mallory in florida, it was going back to school at the age of 68. This is what the freedom dividend would mean for us in real life. This is a vision you can make a reality like this, iowa. This is in your power and your power alone. Now, my first move was not to run for president of the United States because i am not insane. I worked in the obama administration. I went to washington and said, what are we going to do to help our fellow citizens understand it is not immigrants causing these problems, it is technology and an economy pushing more of us aside . The folks in washington, d. C. , had very little to offer. But one of them gave me some guidance that led me to you all tonight. He said, andrew, you are in the wrong town. No one in washington, d. C. , will touch this because fundamentally, this is not a town of leaders. This is a town of followers. The only way we will do anything is if you were to create a wave in the rest of the country and bring that crashing down on our heads. That is why i am with you tonight, iowa i am with you tonight because you must be that wave i am not running for president because i fantasize about being president. I am running for president because, like so many of you in this room, i am a parent and a patriot. I have seen the future that lies ahead for our children and it is not something im willing to except. Accept. In iowa, you know what the future holds. You saw it happen to your farms and then your factories. Now it is on your main street. Soon it will hit your highways. It is up to you and you alone to turn the tide. You must be the wave that helps us rewrite the rules of the 21st century economy to work for us, to work for you, the people of this country. Wave that helps give the entire nation a new way and gives me and millions of parents around the country the ability to look our children in the eyes and say, with truth in our hearts, your country loves you, your country values you, and you are going to be all right. Thank you very much, iowa lets move the country Forward Together in 2020 and win this whole thing i love iowa i love it here [cheers and applause] andrew yang thank you washington journal. [working 9 to 5] announcer please welcome senator Elizabeth Warren. They just use your mind and they never give you credit its enough to drive you crazy if you let it 9 to 5 for service and devotion you would think that i would deserve a fair promotion i swear sometimes that man is out to get me let you dream just to watch them shatter senator warren hello, iowa [cheers and applause] and the tide is going to turn and it is all going to roll your way [cheers and applause] senator warren ok. Ok. [chanting] senator warren hello, iowa. i am here to talk about something that people across iowa and across america know down deep in their bones. Our democracy has been hijacked. By the rich and powerful. They make it work for themselves, and they leave everyone else behind. We see it every time a Corporate Executive threatens to cut pay and move jobs overseas. We see it every time an Insurance Company wont give people, denies treatment and denies access to the doctors that people trust. We see it when a criminal Justice System tears apart black and brown families. And the list goes on. People crushed by Student Loan Debt. People crushed by Student Loan Debt. We see it over and over. We see it when a gun industry prevents any vote on sensible legislation that could save the lives of our children. We see it when an oil industry continues to drill and calls the shots in washington. That is corruption plain and simple. And we need to be willing to call it out for what it is. [cheers and applause] warren if weeth are going to make the big challenges of our time, it is going to take big structural change. And that starts with you, iowa. You know, a lot of people are afraid of big structural change. Afraid, because they are already rich and powerful. And they may lose influence. Afraid, because they have built lives sucking up to those who are rich and powerful. Afraid, because they see in america where they will not be able to make the changes they need. Afraid, because they are either too cynical or too downtrodden. To believe that change is possible. Well, not me. I believe in change. And i know that we can get it done. [applause] senator Elizabeth Warren and why do i know we can get it done . Because i have done it. I want to tell you a story about a toaster. Back when i was a young mom, toasters could actually set houses on fire. Really. Those little toaster ovens did not have a shutoff switch. So you could put in the bread, hear the baby cry, leave the room, and come back and your toast would literally be in flames. Sometimes along with the kitchen curtains and the Kitchen Cabinets as well. And then, a federal agency stepped in. And said, enough. You cannot sell toasters in america that could have a one in five chance of burning down your house. Done. No more toaster fires. Back by the early 2000s, mortgages in this country had gotten so complicated and so dangerous that they had a one in five chance of costing a family their home. Not because of fire, but because of foreclosure. Only this time, this time, the federal government was not on the side of the families. It was deep in the pocket of the big banks. In fact, so deep in the pocket of the big banks, that they permitted millions of those mortgages to be sold and they crashed our economy. That was 2008. So, i had an idea. A Consumer Agency that would protect people. That would protect people when they got mortgages or credit cards or payday loans, the same way that other consumer agencies had protected people they bought toasters. So, here is the deal. I went to washington and tried to talk to everybody i could about this idea. They told me two things. Almost everyone i talked to said the same two things. First, that is a great idea. You can make a real difference. That is structural change. Yes. And the second thing was, dont even try. Banks, they will fight you. The republicans will fight you. A bunch of the democrats will fight you. You will never get this done. I get it. Big structural change is hard. But it was the right thing to do. So we took on wall street. We took on the big money. And we won. And that little Consumer Agency has now forced the big banks to billionore than 12 directly to people they cheated. We know how to make government work for the people. So what did i learn from this fight . I learned that, notwithstanding what the billionaires will tell big banking, ag, or big pharma will tell you, that if we are going to meet the challenges of our time, we need big ideas. [applause] senator Elizabeth Warren big ideas. Big ideas to inspire people and get them out to caucus and get them out to vote. [applause] senator Elizabeth Warren big lifeblood of our party and show the world who and what democrats will fight for. [applause] senator Elizabeth Warren big ideas to take back the senate and put Mitch Mcconnell out of a job. [cheers and applause] senator Elizabeth Warren we need big ideas. And here is the critical part. We need to be willing to fight for them. It is easy to give up on the big idea. But when we give up on big ideas, we give up on the people whose lives would be touched by those ideas. [applause] senator Elizabeth Warren and those people are already in a fight. People who are struggling to pay their medical bills are already in a fight. People who are so crushed by Student Loan Debt are already in a fight. People who are denied the chance to vote, or stopped by the police because of the color of their skin, are already in a fight. And those fights are all our fights. Look, anyone who comes on the stage and does not understand that we are already in a fight is not the person who is going to win that fight. [cheers and applause] stage who comes on this and tells you they can make fight is nott a going to win that fight. [cheers and applause] sen. Warren and anyone who comes on this stage and tells and give up small early is not going to lead our party to victory. [cheers and applause] sen. Warren this is a time of crisis, and media pundits, washington insiders, even some people in our own party dont want to admit it. They think that running some vague campaign that nibbles around the edges is somehow safe. If the most weekend promise is we can promise is business as usual after donald trump, democrats will lose. Solutionsn we offer big enough to touch the problems that are in peoples lives. Not and complacency does win elections. Hope and courage wins elections. [cheers and applause] sen. Warren i am not running some consultant driven campaign with some vague ideas that are designed not to offend anyone. Based oning a campaign a lifetime of fighting for working families. I am running a campaign from the 2020 is our time in history. Time to win the fight for a Green New Deal and save this planet. [cheers and applause] 2020 is our time to win this fight for medicare for all and save our people. [cheers and applause] time toren 2020 is our centthe fight for a two wealth tax and invest in a whole generation. History, ourime in hard,o dream big, fight and win. [cheers and applause] sen. Warren thank you. Thank you. Thank you. [working 9 to 5 plays] [applause] for your hands together for senator Kamala Harris. Sen. Harris good evening, iowa. Were here. Ow why were here because this is the is the moment where we have to be prepared to fight for the best of our country. This is the moment where we need to fight for this country we love, for the rule of law, for our system of justice, and for our very democracy. [cheers and applause] sen. Harris so we are all here to fight. We are all here to fight. Endre all here to fight to that National Nightmare called donald trump. Win, democrats. To win. Cant be about anything other than looking at the future. Be about looking at yesterday. We need to be focused on tomorrow. To win. We are going to have to fight against those who have been trying to push hate and division among us and have americans turn on each other. To win we are going to have to for what i know in my heart and my soul to be true, which is the beauty of the diversity of who we are as a nation. [cheers and applause]. Harris we all [applause] we all have some much more in common than what muchates us have so more in common than what separates us. And to win and to win and to win we are going to need a nominee on that stage with donald trump who has the ability to go toe to toe with donald trump in iowa. You are looking at her. [cheers and applause] sen. Harris so i have spent my career i have spent my career as a prosecutor. Ive only had one client in my entire life, and that has been the people. Unlike other people unlike others i have never represented a corporation. I have never represented a special interest. Fighting forcareer the people. The first day i walked into a courtroom, i spoke five words, Kamala Harris for the people. [cheers and applause] sen. Harris and those words those words, for the people, capture our system of justice because there are two points when we say for the people. One, in our system of justice we have rightly said a harm against anyone is a harm against everyone. No one should be made to fight alone. And for the people, when i stood there, and when i stand here today also means all of the people, regardless of race, regardless of gender, regardless of sexual orientation, regardless of the party with which they are registered to vote, regardless of the language your grandmother speaks. It means all the people. And it was for the people that a large part of the early part of my career was about fighting against those who molested children and raped women because it was about saying those arvivors deserve justice and voice that give them safety without when i was the elected District Attorney in san francisco, that saying that the war on drugs was an abject failure, and so i created models on what it means to give jobs to those that are arrested for drugs. When i was the attorney general of california, running the secondlargest department of justice in the United States, second only to the United States department of justice, meant the biggest banks in the United States who had engaged in predatory lending practices and bringing home to my state 20 billion. People as a United States senator meant taking on jeff sessions, taking on bill kavanaugh. G on brett [cheers and applause] iowa, i stand here before you today for the people fully prepared to defeat donald trump. [cheers and applause] sen. Harris that is why i am running, for the people. [crowd chanting for the people] say thatis and i will in the name of the people i believe that in 2020 justice is on the ballot. Justice is on the ballot. When in america there is a father who is holding down two jobs, trying to figure out how to get through the end of the month, paying more taxes than the richest 400 families in america, Economic Justice is on the ballot. [applause] sen. Harris so i am running for president to pass the largest middleclass taxcut we have had in history. You know how we are going to pay for it . On day one we are going to repeal that tax bill that benefits the top 1 and the biggest corporations in america. When in america there is a mother who is in a parking lot of a hospital, afraid to walk through the sliding glass doors of the emergency room with her child because she knows if she goes through those doors she will be out of pocket a 4000 deductible. Health care justice is on the ballot. President tong for make sure there is medicare for all. Not medicare for some, medicare costs and bring down to ensure that you also get choice because i heard from folks that said, dont take away my opportunity to have a private plan. You will get a public or private plan depending on your choice. Looking at teachers, across america, who are holding down two or three jobs to get through the end of the month, education justice is on the ballot. [cheers and applause] sen. Harris so i am running for president to put in place what will be the First Federal investment in closing the teacher pay gap. Here and i will that will be 12,200 a year. When all over america there are women who are being attacked for their constitutional right to make decisions about their own es, reproductive justice is on the ballot. [cheers and applause] sen. Harris so i am running to ensure every woman will have her legal and constitutional right am not these outofstate republican legislators who tell women what to do with their bodies. America, dren in regardless of who their parent voted for for president , are afraid to go to school because they are afraid they may get shot, afraid there may be a gunman roaming the hallways of their school, justice for children is on the ballot. [cheers and applause] sen. Harris so i am running for president to take executive action if necessary and implement what people who have failed to have courage have not done, which is take on the gun lobby in washington, d. C. And i want to give a shout out because he had the courage to say you cannot walk around talking about gun safety but you dont have the courage to figure out how you are going to take 5 million assault weapons off the streets of america. Justice is on the ballot. It is time that we fight. This is a fight that is about all of us because, yes, a harm against any one of us is a harm against all of us. Here is the bottom line, iowa. I do believe that when we wercome these injustices will unlock the promise of america and the potential of the American People. Believeieve i do that this is what we want and need. This is the america. That is the america that i see. That is the america i believe in. That is the america i know it to be. That is why i am running for president of the United States. And caucus with corner. Alamalas thank you. [applause] please welcome tom steyer. [up around the bend playing] hello, iowa. This is thehis, biggest gathering of democrats in 2019. And it is going to be the biggest gathering of democrats until the Democratic Convention next spring. Pretty amazing. And let me say this, you guys are getting a chance to hear a lot of great plans and policies from some real democratic leaders. We should all remember that everybody you hear today is more honest, more coherent, and more patriotic than the criminal who resides at the white house. Everybody. That the people up here on this stage are all pointing towards february 3, 2020, because that is the caucus day. For me the big island day is december 15, 2019 because my turn 100y is going to and iowa city, and she has told me i have to be there no matter what else. For me that is going to be my big day. I know these policies are great. I think everybody in this room and everybody on this stage shares the same values. We know we need a change. We know we need a huge win. We know we need to turn the page. We are not going to get to do that unless we break the corporate stranglehold that is controlling our government. Corporations have bought our d. C. ,ment in washington, and all the great plans for us to get them done, we are going to have to break that stranglehold. That is why i am running for president. I know to break it, we are going , andve to tell the truth we are going to have to take strong, bold action. Let me tell you a story about someone who did that in iowa. Rose was living in iowa falls, iowa. She is 90 years old. She watched donald trump get elected with horror. She was scared. She was upset. She is worried about the future for her grandchildren. When i started the need to impeach campaign, mary rose immediately signed up. She is 90 years old. She cannot go doortodoor. She cannot make a series of phone calls. What did she do . She wrote over 1000 cards to other americans asking them to hold the most corrupt president in American History accountable. [applause] mary knew that mr. Trump is a fraud and corrupt and a criminal. When people said it is not politically smart to push impeachment, i am with mary. It is not a question of what is politically convenient, it is a question of what is right. Action, that is what america needs. What democrats need our truth and action. We are talking about grassroots. I started one of the biggest grassroots organizations, next general america, in this country. With our partners in the labor kedement we have knoc on tens of millions of doors and organized young people across america, including in iowa. In 2018, we did the largest youth Voter Mobilization in American History. We work congressional first and third in iowa. We more than doubled the turnout of young people in those districts, and we helped to elect cindy axne and abby finkenauer. [cheers and applause] tom truth and action is how america has solved our Biggest Challenges at home and abroad. We have a huge challenge in front of us in the shape of Climate Change. I said i would make it my number one priority. Mind we no doubt in my need to address it on a realtime basis if we are going to handle it. I have over a decade long history of winning around the country on Climate Change. I have taken on the Oil Companies at the ballot and beat them. I pushed clean energy at the ballot and won. With my partners in the labor movement, we have protected and created hundreds of thousands of Clean Energy Jobs across this country. [laughter] [applause] tom in addition, when the harm is pointed at the most vulnerable communities in this to hold i have worked elected officials accountable to make sure those communities are not picked on. Truth and action. Break thegoing to corporate stranglehold on our government, that is what it is going to take. We are going to have to take bold action. I am talking term limits for congress and the senate. 12 years. Was talking about making Congress Look more like america. You want to make Congress Look more like america . How about term limits. Congress is not supposed to be a lifetime appointment. If you want the strongest argument for term limits that i mitchit is the six words mcconnell, lindsey graham, chuck grassley. You want to get rid of them, term limits. Let me say this, we dont have a failed society. Sometimes i listen to people talking in politics. We dont have a failed society. We have the most Successful Society in the history of this planet. We have a failed government. If we can get back to a and byent of the people the people and control our climate crisis, we are in the best position of any people in the history of the planet. We are going to get everything. We are going to get a right to equal votes for every american. We are going to get a right to clean air and clean water. Nobody poisons us for profit. We are going to get a right to a living wage because one job should always be enough. We are going to get a right to quality education because schools should never be for sale. We are going to get health care as a right. We are going to get Affordable Health care as a right for every american because companies should never be able to dictate our care. At theactually looking best position we could be in. I want to talk about how i got on this date. Myself,d a company by one person in a room, no employees. The room had no windows. I built a pretty big company. I took the pledge to give away the bulk of my assets while i am alive to good causes. I walked away from that company. I have spent the rest of my life building coalitions of americans to take on unchecked Corporate Power and to push for broader democracy. That may seem strange. You may wonder, why does that make sense . I will tell you why it makes sense. My mom was a teacher from minnesota. Teaching in the new York Public Schools and in the brooklyn house of detention. My dad was the first generation in his family to go to college. My grandfather was a plumber. Gratefulather was so for the opportunity this country gave him that he left his law practice, went into the navy in world war ii and as a lawyer ended up prosecuting that nazis at nuremburg. They thought you give back at least as much to this country as you get. That is what you do. Actions speak louder than words. My mom said that to me every day of my life. Actions speak louder than words. When people told me nobody beats the Oil Companies, they are too rich and powerful, you will never win, we went ahead and one. I delivered on that promise. When they said the Tobacco Companies have 117 times in a row, dont waste your time or money, we beat the Tobacco Companies. I delivered on that promise. And when people said impeaching the president is a liberal pipedream, forget it, it is never going to happen, you are ridiculous. Ook at where we are now i delivered on that promise. So, let me say this, if you support me, there are three things i promise you. I will tell the truth, i will take bold action, and i will deliver on the promise. Yearowa, best day of the for democrats is today. We will have a huge victory fall. Lets all do it together. Thank you very much. [applause] please welcome senator bernie sanders. [applause] good evening iowa democrats. And let me congratulate troy price and the Iowa Democratic party for turning two congressional seats blue in 2018. [applause] sen. Sanders that is no small feat. The Iowa Democratic party is on the move, and i look forward to working with you to make
