Why did this happen . Let us also pray for those who are in power, that they will have the wisdom, the courage, and the resolve to come together to find ways to end the gun violence that plagues our nation. [applause] to Country Music concerts, this cannot go on. If these leaders do this, and they Work Together to find solutions, they will be emulating the people of southern nevada, who came together in the wake of such a tragedy, through sacrifice, and served, who volunteered and contributed, who marched and prayed and cried out for a change. To show the world, in the worst of circumstances, that we are family. We are las vegas strong. [applause] i welcome mynd now friend and our senator, who cares very much about this community, and who has been out there with me and the mayor and all of you throughout this terrible week. [applause] thank you. I too want to thank Vice President pence and mrs. Pants for joining us in our community today. Our community has come together in such a powerful way. A lot of america thinks of las vegas as the strip. As the mayor said, 43 million americans come here and visit. Those of us that were born and raised here, and made this home know that we are still a small community. Friendsof us here had or family at that concert. My niece was at that concert with her friend. Amalong with all of you, still trying to grapple with what happened and the shock of it all. I am angry, i am sad, but most of all, i am so proud of our community. Southern nevada has come together in the face of this horrific tragedy. I cannot say enough about the First Responders of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department, our Fire Department [applause] sen. Cortezx masto our paramedics, emts, the doctors and nurses, the staff, and yes, our security guards and our hotel staff. The stories of heroism and compassion from that night are overwhelming. We have also heard of the bravery and compassion of fellow whovegas, nevadans, those who pulled people into their cars, taking them to the hospital, sheltering the wounded. I am so amazed by our community. We have shown the nation that we care for one another, we stand united, we are proud, and we are vegas strong. All of you, and all of us here today are joined by compassion and empathy from the entire country. The Community Response has just been incredible. Whether you donated food or bottles of water, or gave blood, or contributed money, thank you. We stood together this week. We are together today. And we will continue to be there in the weeks, months, and years to come for the families who had their loved ones murdered, and for all of those recovering. And throughout this tragedy, i have been heartened by the stories of these euros that might the heroes that night. Smith, now jonathan an adopted member of our las vegas community. Despite receiving a gunshot to the neck, jonathan saved the lives of 30 people by leaving them out of the venue and taking cover. He did this even after losing sight of his family. Inathan later said, i decided was not going to leave anyone behind. Whoes like alicia of reno traveled with friends to the concert and helped carry the wounded and treat the injured onsite. She would later say, well just did what we could do to save each other. I think that is truly the heart of humanity. Over the past few days we have seen that heart of humanity. Together i know we will not be pleasing each other behind. Our community is tough, and we will stand together in unity in the wake of this terror. We will support the wounded, the families of those taken, and we will remember the names of the 58 who lost their lives sunday night. Thank you all for being here, and thank you for standing united and vegas strong. [applause] sen. Cortezx masto and now i have the honor and privilege of introducing to the stage, my good friend, and our senior senator for the state of nevada, dean heller. [applause] thank you, catherine. On october 1, a madman targeted our city. A men then brought evil and violence amadman brought evil and violence to our community. A madman tried to change our lives. While he brought death and suffering, he ultimately failed, because today we stand stronger, closer to him and more united. Good afternoon, and thank you all for being here. Mr. Vice president , thank you for traveling to our state to be part of our collective healing and recovery process. Your support and that of the president will always be numbered. Session always be remembered. A lot of our community have next displayed extraordinary leadership in the past few days. None more than our find sheriff joe lombardo. [applause] sen. Heller sheriff, you were here earlier thank you and the entire metropolitan Police Department for your courage and strength during this crisis. We have seen a confirmation since the horrifying events of last sunday. In the aftermath of death and bloodshed, the terror and violence, our city has, in a strange way, grown, and the world has seen it. People all over the globe know us as a city of entertainment. Now they are seeing us in a new light, as a community of faith and family, who cares for one another and will be there for each other when it matters most. They have seen our Police Officers run toward chaos under the fire of a powerful weapon. They have heard about our cabdriver who pulled a gravely wounded woman into his cap and drove her to the hospital. We heard about a marina. Borrowed a marine that the borrowed a truck with injured victims and drove them to safety. Thee bullets dug up concrete around them, our emergency doctors and nurses working aroundtheclock on floors slick with blood. I have had the unique honor of meeting with the families. Their stories are heartbreaking. But amidst all of their pain, they have spoken of the compassion that they have shown, and have been shown, by the people of our great city. So through this pain, there is a sense of pride as well. Beyond the neon lights and the attraction of las vegas beats the heart of a true home, a true family, amateur community of faith. And through the a True Community of faith. We have learned this Community Extends far and wide. Whether you have deep roots here, or you are a tourist, a guest or a visitor, you have shown you are part of this family. So today, wherever you live, we are together. And at this time on this day, we are all las vegans. [applause] sen. Heller it is my distinct honor now to introduce a man that i consider a great front. A friend to me personally and a friend to our state, and a friend to the city. His presence here and that of his wife reaffirms the sense of loss, but also the sense of pride this tragedy has brought upon all of us. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Vice President of the united states, and mrs. Pence. [applause] v. P. Pence senator heller, senator cortez masto, mayor goodman, state and local officials, pastor hatch, people of las vegas, my fellow americans my wife karen and i are honored to be with you for this las vegas unity prayer walk. We are grateful to each of you, and we are grateful to the inspiration of your former deputy fire chief, kevin chapman. Kevin, thank you for loving the people of this community the way you do. [applause] v. P. Pence President Trump personally asked us to be here to stand with you, to pray with you for strength, comfort, and healing in the wake of sunday nights horrific attack here in las vegas. In america, we mourn with those who mourn, we grieve with those who grieve. I stand with you on behalf of my family and every family in america to say we are with you. Today we are all vegas strong. [applause] v. P. Pence as the president often says, when one part of america hurts, we all heard. When one part of america struggles, we all struggle. And when one part of america cries out for help, we always come together to answer the call. Five days ago, america awoke to the news of the worst mass shooting in the history of the united states. Here, 58d not far from people lost their lives, and nearly 500 were injured. It was a tragedy of unimaginable proportions, and as the president said in his address to the nation, we are joined together in sadness, shock, and grief for the fallen and injured and their families. Those were lost were taken before their time, but their names and stories will be forever etched into the hearts of the american people. Among them, a special ed teacher who helped the neediest, named sandra casey. A policeman and a veteran, who coached a youth football team. [applause] a fulltime mom name d hannah, who was the sunshine of her family. And jack, a construction worker who died shielding his wife from harm. To the families of these and all of our fallen, near and far, we extend the deepest condolences of the first family, of our family, and of the american people. The bible tells us that the lord is close to the brokenhearted, and this will be our prayer for all of you. We do mourn with those who mourn, and grieve with those who grieve, but we do not grieve like those who have no hope, because heroes gie us hope. [applause] as President Trump said here on wednesday, in the depths of horror, we will always find hope in the men and women who risk their lives for ours. We find hope in the heroic actions of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department, the Fire Department, and all the First Responders on that night, without regard to their own safety. Heir actions undoubtedly saved lives that night. [applause] we find hope in theedlyv. P. Pe medical professionals in this community, the doctors, surgeons, nurses, emts across las vegas, who switched w hose swift professionalism and expert care prevented and even wider tragedy. [applause] and we find hope in the Everyday Americans whose heroic actions inspire the nation. Among the heroes known and unknown, a mom who shielded her fouryearold daughter with her own body. A father who helped guide others to safety, even though he had been shot not once, but twice. An offduty firefighter who told his wife she had to run, but he to tuesday to had to stay help those in need. An army veteran who rushed to the scene to find his girlfriend and mom, and ended up carrying the wounded off field. These were Everyday Americans, but every day from this day forward, we will remember their selflessness and courage whenever we remember that dark hour. [applause] v. P. Pence on sunday night, las vegas came facetoface with your evil. Pure evil. But no evil, no act of violence will diminish the strength and goodness of the american people. As President Trump said on monday morning, our unity cannot be shattered by evil, our bonds cannot be broken by violence. He says it is our love that defines us today, and it always will. As i read in my devotions this morning, love binds all of our virtues together in unity. And so in the wake of this tragedy, we put on love. We find comfort in the knowledge that we are united as one nation, as one people, with one voice. United in our grief, united in our support for those who have suffered, and united in our resolve to end such evil in our time. [applause] v. P. Pence so today, we offer our prayers. From our hearts to the heart of heaven, we pray for those we lost, and for those they left behind. We pray for the injured, and the men and women who care for them at this very hour. We pray for the people of las vegas. And we pray for our nation. Thousandsords sung by before the shots rang out that fateful night might be ever more blessthat god would america. [applause] v. P. Pence that he will renew our unity and strengthen our faith, our faith that as he has ever watched over this great land, that he in this moment, ain bind our wounds, heal the brokenhearted, and wipe every tear from our eyes. So may god bless you. Men andbless the women of Law Enforcement and all of our First Responders. May god bless the fallen, the injured, and their precious families. And may god bless america. [applause] i have had the privilege of being asked to offer a closing prayer. So if you are so inclined, if you would val with me bow with me. Heavenly father, your word says where two or more gathered in your name, there you are also, so thank you for being here with us right now. Thank you for all of the heroes, those who selflessly helps others. Thank you for their stories that inspire us, even in our grief. Help us now Going Forward to honor the memories of those lost, to remember and to celebrate their lives. Are asking for you to wrap your loving arms around the city of las vegas. Hold close the survivors who are struggling. Hold tight especially, those who lost loved ones. They are hurting deeply, and their communities are hurting deeply. Be with their families, their friends, their colleagues. Give them comfort, and give them peace. And father, Going Forward from this place, we ask you, help us now to heal. Amen. Amen.
