It has a worldfamous view, and the fact that we are a natural landmark, i really love the description of the garden of the gods park as being, perhaps, the most striking contrast between mountains and plains in all of north america. The natural history, the history of the earth is almost like an here in Colorado Springs. What we are seeing here is the remnants of sand dunes, lagoons, the bottom of an ocean, and even glacial gravel, that has occurred from the last 3 million years, so if you walk in the Visitors Center out to the park, it is like a walk act in time. In about half a mile, you can go 300 million years ago. The first people that we know of in the pikes peak region were utes. And this was their homeland. The whole hike speak area was their homeland, and they would navigate it as part of their journey, because in the to be, we have parks that have been dated over 3000 years ago, and those journeys continue for many many centuries. 1800s, we have the United States and people heading madeard, and certainly it a huge, tumultuous impact on the native people. Tes did negotiate with the government to keep part of their homeland in colorado, part of the origination in southwestern colorado, but certainly all of this date and the nation. Then, of course, we had the pikes peak gold rush, and that gold was actually found in cherry creek in the denver area, but pikes peak is such an amazing landmark, it became the gold rush, so two surveyors in 1858 new that there would need to be a supply cap, so they came to this area to set up a small town. They were just donned iv beauty rocks,this whole story of thiss about a gift that really followed after general palmer provided a very large section of our Parks Department today, and Charles Perkins liked that philosophy, and so he informed his children that that was what he was going to do. Charles perkins was a friend of , and he owned the railroad, and he probably speculated on owning some of this land, but because palmer wanted to make sure they had the right environment for people who were going to live here, he adopted the same philosophy, so when it came time to do something with this property, it was easy for him to make the decision that it would stay a park and be forever free to the people, and it stays that way today. Unusual for a city parks and Recreation Department to have to take on something that really has national significance. This has always been a draw, and people come here for two natural reasons. They come for paul speak pikes peak, and they come for the garden of the gods. Those are the reasons, and remains that today. 41909 when Charles Perkins gave 1909, when before Charles Perkins gave the gift, he knew it would be important, and we keep it today. The city has well over 150 parks. This is the park that is most significant because of the national draw. It is unusual to have to maintain Something Like this, and as the same time youd would perhaps do an overhead or a smaller park. In 1995, a foundation was a benefactor of this park to create a system for the Visitors Center to be owned by the foundation and with the profit from the Visitors Center going to maintain the garden of the gods park. We are proud of that, because this is so significant. They attempted to make this a National Park and they were trying to combine the garden of the gods and pikes peak, but there was too much privately soed land between the two, that request was set aside by congress, and otherwise, i think it would have been. Yellowstone certainly captured that. But this remains a draw with an excess of 2 million, two point 5 Million People according to records today, and when you get that kind of attention, you know, one, the economic benefit to our region to have that kind of visitation to see our natural resources. Announcer around the turn of the 20th century, Colorado Springs was a major center to treat tuberculosis. The cousin of the countrys dry climate and fresh, mountain air, and we continue the 2015 cities tour with a museum and its exhibit on tuberculosis and some of the medical equipment used to treat tb patients.
