Were following these major developing stories and many more all coming in right here to Cnn News central Washington Clinton and my colleague and cohost, Boris Sanchez is live in florida following the very latest on Hurricane Milton, which is where we begin this hour, we are watching is this powerful category four storm is barreling through the Gulf Of Mexico with florida directly in its sights right now, mass evacuations are underway across the state and were seeing this long lines, traffic jams, and also many Gas Stations that are running out of fuel the mayor of tampa says tankers are on their way to refill Gas Stations in the area and heres a look at milton from space. This storm. It is just huge as you can see here on the impacts, could be catastrophic with potentially lifethreatening Storm Surge and damaging winds heres how tampas without any drama to station whatsoever, if you choose to stay and what are those Evacuation Areas you are going to die. But this is something that i have never seen In My Life, and i can tell you that anyone who was born and raised in the Tampa Bay Area has never seen anything like this before people need to get out the stark warning boris, youre there in Treasure Island, which of course is in the Tampa Bay Area. What are folks preparing for there its hard to imagine seeing the state of this community in Treasure Island a Barrier Island on the Gulf Coast of florida. And imagining that anyone could survive what they are about to witness from Hurricane Milton what you see here around me is the result of Hurricane Helene. This is debris from a category four storm that made Landfall Hundreds Of Miles from here. And this debris were talking about mattresses, water heaters, scrap metal, glass its just out for blocks and blocks and blocks. One of the first things that you notice when you come into Treasure Island is the smell, because the trash is everywhere and when youre looking at a potential 15 foot Storm Surge on top of about a foot of water in rainfall Plus 125 mile an hour winds. This as one neighbor told me, has the potential to become a countless number of missiles. And its not just this pile here or further down this block. I want you to look at a scene that weve seen multiple times across pinellas county. There is trash everywhere and this former us pile, nearly 20 feet high is roughly a few hundred yards from the beach. The beaches actually just behind those buildings over there and on The Other Side, theres a bay. So you can imagine the water is going to come into this community if the forecast stands as it is and essentially make an enormous mess of things i spoke to one neighbor named matt, who was here for Hurricane Helene. He said that he had to get out from his first floor apartment. He got into chest highwater. He made it to the second floor and survived. This time he says hes not taking any chances. Heres more of what he shared with me we dont know where its going to hit at might hit here, might hit south, might hit north. And it looks like its Gonna Be devastating, particularly for buildings like this, because hes are not Hurricane Proof buildings still out there. It has been picked up hes going to turn to the missiles are Gonna Be, theyre gonna blow this way below that way we dont know whats going to happen. These things, sorry so yeah, its not good people around here. They need to get out of here. Well someplace else is silly to stick around here its not worth it me, i did speak though. Brianna to a Bus Driver whos stationed outside of City Hall here on Treasure Island. Shes been designated to help evacuated folks that want to get out she says that people here have until 4 00 p. M. Two register to evacuated, but so far today, only about 40 hours from that deadline her buses completely empty. Nobody has come at this point to evacuate yet. I want to get the latest on the forecast now and see exactly where milton stands. Lets go live to Elisa Raffa, whos in the Weather Center for us at least aware for is the hurricane now and in terms of strength, what are we seeing . I know there was some speculation that it might be reinvigorated to a category five, i guess the latest word is that its Gonna Stay at a strong category four yes, right now, it is teetering on that category five strength. Thats got 150 mile per hour winds, 156 miles per hour makes it a category five so again, Risk Kind of Splitting Hairs. Harris kind of teetering along that border, but that ai is wakening up. It looks clear and symmetrical. So its still keeping its intensity and its strength still Effect Category four storm 500 miles south and west of Tampa Bay we still have it waning a little bit in that intention. Nice still though, a major hurricane as it makes landfall on the problem with the kind of wobbling that its doing in the intensity is what that will do is make the storm wider. Its going to doable in size, becoming fat or so it will have a much greater reach for those damaging winds thats why we now have Hurricane Warnings in effect from coasttocoast, from the East Coast all The Way to the atlantic coast. We could see a category two Hurricane Swiping through orlando. Thats helped far wide reaching this thing could have and i was incredibly troubled to see that huge mountain of debris behind you because were looking at 110 mile per hour winds from Tampa Down To Sarasota, that all of those things behind you will absolutely be Projectiles Hurricane Force winds, going towards the East Coast. Heres what im talking about. The storm again, getting wider, dropped it will Storm Force winds, taking over much of the peninsula. The Hurricane Force winds from Coast To coast, that means widespread power outages. And this is the unsurvivable part. This is why youre hearing the officials use such grave wording because ten to 15 feet of Storm Surge, you have to escape that. You have that from Tampa Down To Sarasota Storm Surge, even still up to ten feet, even as far south as Fort Myers, the entire close, well have that ocean sloshing inland. Plus you have the Heavy Rain coming down from the sky up to a foot possible. So multiple Hazards Boris Number of hazards. And as you noted, elisa very, very widespread. I was talking earlier about the debris that we saw from Hurricane Helene, again, that made Landfall Hundreds Of Miles from here. Its not hard to imagine that further south and further north from where this Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall. People will be feeling the effects actually want to take you now live to Fort Myers with cnns carlos suarez, who has been spending the day there observing preparations carlos, what are you seeing where you are well, boris, the folks here in Fort Myers are getting ready for this hurricane. Weve been here for a good part of the Day And Business owners are putting up plywood. They are getting ready for whats expected to be some severe flooding to give you a sense of exactly what im talking about here. And i almost felt because theyre laying out this tarp here. You can see these folks have laid out as much as they can. These bags that they believe can absorb some of this water. And were told that just two years ago during Hurricane Ian the water out here, it got to about four feet and with the forecast for the Storm Surge with this hurricane is expected to be about six to ten feet and so were looking at more flooding in a storm that is hitting right now to the north of here this place here was actually supposed to open in october of 2024, were told that they were just weeks away from hopefully opening their doors, but now theyre getting ready for the storm the concern as we move throughout the week, of course, is this thing. And one of the reasons why for part of Fort Myers to be evacuated in an Evacuation Zone is because there is a river just The Other Side of this street. Its called the Kaluza Hatchie and it goes out into the Gulf Of Mexico and it also goes into Lake Okeechobee in the central part of florida. As that Storm Surge moves through, again, anywhere between 16 to ten feet as the six to a foot of Rain Falls and has all of that wind moves through that river is going to crash, that is going to overflow. And so what youre going to see is all of that water well, rushing to where we are right now. And that is the big concern for the folks in this part of Fort Myers, boris much for that update. I want to go back to a moment ago when we were describing how difficult it is for community to recover from two major hurricanes so close to each other. And the amount of debris that there is scattered, not only here on Treasure Island, but across the western coast of florida im joined now by dan whelan. Im wondering what you make of what weve seen around the community with so many piles like this. And then the potential for that to become a projectile. Yeah. No, its been bizarre. But ultimately, theres still a lot left to do and to that point, is there much time to do Anything Else . But evacuated i think thats really it. You know, a lot of the orders had been placed as far as based on certain zones where you live. So if you do live in those its probably in your best city needs that. They need our help. Everybody was like, hey, what can i do to help . What have you heard from officials that have been working with College Hunks to get stuff out. Do they have confidence that enough has been done to move the stuff that needs to be moved. I think weve made a really, really large dance so the city of tampa actually called us over the weekend, was like hey, theres still a lot of stuff still outstanding on from the last hurricane. Can you guys help . And so we were fortunate enough to be able to answer that call. Weve hauled over 100 tons of debris just in the past two days alone. So the streets look a lot better than they did a couple of days before. But again, to your point, theres still a lot but still obviously is left over. That still needs to be done. Yeah. Because what i have worked for many, many decades now being american, is that big problems in america require bipartisan so i think its important that we not live and govern can an Echo Chamber where everybody agrees and everybody is a yes man. Yes, Bowman And Everybody comes from the same experience so for me, that tells me a lot about this coalition that Kamala Harris has building where shes got people like Liz Cheney and Dick Cheney on the right and people like Alexandria Ocasiocortez and Bernie Sanders because we need a precedent that will represent americans. This is a Barrier Island on the Gulf Coast that is within well within the cone were Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall as a very powerful storm. Theyre anticipating wins upwards of 125 miles an hour here and if you look behind me, this is a huge part of the concern. This is what governor Ron Desantis has been talking about since Hurricane Helene swept through this area, a couple of weeks ago, there are piles and piles of trash them theres debris that could very easily become dangerous a barbecue, you have what appears to be a dishwasher. There are pieces of glass buckets, plastic, shreds of would. There are peoples personal keepsakes. I found this photo on the ground just a moment ago. There were childrens toys all of this very quickly becomes dangerous and a Death Trap for folks that are on this ireland, which has essentially one way in and one way out. And when you pair this with about 15 feet of Storm Surge plus a foot a foot, nearly a foot of rainfall on top of that with nowhere for the water to go. It is an extremely dangerous situation and were seeing scenes much like this all around the West Coast of florida. Its not this is all from Hurricane Helene. The Storm Surge here, the Police Chief Bill Tokyo Juror told me he if the Police Chief and homes beach, he said they measured it at 400 feet on the main road just behind my photojournalist, john general these were seeing that same scenes that youre seeing in Treasure Island. There are piles and piles of trash all around this island and talking with Tik Tok choke adjourn. He is saying theyre not going to be able to clean up everything. This is going some of this is going to come up and its going to be projectile and what is not going to be a projectile that surge is going to take it over Anna Maria Island and push it further into manatee county. Now, over here you are seeing what residents and businesses are leaving theyre theyve tried to board up as much as they can in a short amount of time that theyve had but they have gone from a recovery to Preparation Mode so quick, it is a headspin and youre just seeing as weve gone through Anna Maria Island, theres another truck just laden with trash. Theyre not going to be able theyre going to have to evacuate the island themselves so starting at noon tomorrow, if youre here, there will not be helped coming for you you are on your own and hes made that very clear. And the enormous problem for folks here on Treasure Island is that its surrounded by water. So if you go past that home right there, theres a bay and the water is already seeming at a pretty high level once the rain starts coming down, once you get the Storm Surge and the when there is no doubt that this area is going to get flooded, the other issue here is that when you go the other direction, this is a very thin strip of land just over there is the actual beach. And obviously the waves are going to creep in. Folks in this area. Many, many of them have already left. Ive spoken to some folks that seem hesitant to leave. They should be aware at this point because officials have repeated it that the cutoff for Treasure Island is 7 00 p. M. Tonight. And i do want to leave you with one quick note. There is something tragic. Again about peoples personal belongings coming up and being part of what potentially becomes dangerous about this hurricane theres a childs keepsakes, other there is a childs keepsakes here, scattered in the trash. A kid named angel, who apparently when the principals honorable a few years ago, there were photos of him and his mother what i assume is his mother and his family. And its tragic to see that this enormous pile will soon be into neighborhoods. Itll be into peoples homes, and itll make this storm even more dangerous than it already is.
