Is there water in this thing when your family to the financial future im evan perez at the federal court in washington, and this is cnn President Biden fires up the base in a politicized state of the Union Address. But will it be enough to rally . The nikki haley voters who are now up for grabs. And beating expectations. The new february jobs report showing a much higher jump than expected ill speak to the Labor Secretary about that in just a few moments. And later, a tire comes off, comes flying off. A United Airlines flight during takeoff damaging cars in the Airport Parking lot hello. Im wolf blitzer in washington. And youre in the cnn newsroom President Biden is taking a victory lap after his fiery state of the Union Address a cnn poll finding more than 6. 10 viewers had a positive reaction to the speech last night. Over the course of 66 minutes, the president sought to assuage concerns about his age and contrast his vision for america with Donald Trumps Maga Movement President Biden blasted the former president more than a dozen times without ever seeing his name referring to him simply as my predecessor how my predecessor a former republican president tells putin, quote do whatever the hell you want, many of you in this chamber. And my predecessor, a promising to pass a national ban on reproductive freedom. And my predecessors, watching instead of pain, politics and pressuring members of congress to block the bill, join me in telling the congress to pass it. But unlike my predecessor i know who we are as americans for republicans, not even the president s call to defend democracy. Good that a unified response. President biden was quick to pounce on that history is watching just like yesterday, watched three years ago on january 6 when i surrection storm this very capitol in place, a dagger to the throat of american democracy, my predecessor on some of you here, seek to bury the truth about january 6, i will not do that this is a moment to speak to truth and the bury the lies within moments of taking the floor, President Biden jousted with heckling house republicans. Watch this in november. My team began serious negotiation of the Bipartisan Group of senators. The result was a bipartisan bill with the toughest set of Border Security reforms. Weve ever seen you dont think so . You dont like that phil . That conservatives got together and said it was a good bill. Ill be darned. Thats amazing. Lets get straight to our white house correspondent, Arlette Saenz are how does the president plan to build off his speech in the days, weeks, and months ahead well, wolf, the Biden Campaign is hoping to use the coming weeks to really ramp up their organizing and also find ways to bolster the president s message that he delivered in that state of the Union Address, the president laid out his vision for a second term, but also as you heard in those clips, really tried to present this direct contrast with former President Donald Trump even as he did not name him by name. And that is part of the campaigns month Long Initiative that they are launching. Today, we have some new reporting in about how the president plans to travel, how they plan to build up staff, and all of the steps theyre taking to really ramp up this general election contest. Now, President Biden today will kickstart that travel as he tried travels to the battleground of pennsylvania, hell be visiting a suburb in the philadelphia area. Of course, suburbs are important because theyre trying to court moderate independent and especially female suburban voters as the issue of reproductive rights is one they believe will resonate there. The president is also set to travel to georgia and were just learning moments ago that he will next week be traveling link to new hampshire, michigan, and wisconsin. You also have Vice President harris. Have traveling out west to the battlegrounds of nevada and arizona, and its not just having the candidates hitting the Campaign Trail. The campaign is also working to build their organizing, theyre planning to open more than 100 new offices in battleground states a hiring about 350 new Staff Members to try to start training and working with volunteers to spread the president s message also, the campaign is planning a widespread advertising campaign. This will be about 30 million that they are pouring into television and digital ads over the course of a sixweek period. All to really drive up that contrast that theyre trying to make a width the former President Bidens Campaign Officials have long believed that the Super Tuesday contests and the state of the union would really be a moment. Attorney point in the campaign, a time when voters may be tuning in a little bit more into novembers election so they want to try to take advantage of that at this moment when it comes to organizing, when it comes to getting their messaging out and also getting their candidate President Joe Biden out on the Campaign Trail. Of course, one of the challenges biden will face in the coming weeks is trying to continue to demonstrate that energetic, fiery speech that he gave a last natural trial fine to make those same pitch to voters out of the Campaign Trail at a time when many have been skeptical about a second term in office skeptical about the impact of his policies, and also skeptical about whether he has the age and physical stamina to serve another four years in office Arlette Seinz reporting from the white house for us. Thank you very much, arlette. And as the president hits the Campaign Trail today in the coming days is likely november opponent is set to host a european autocrat. Donald trump is preparing to meet with Hungarian Prime Minister viktor orban later today at maralago in Florida Trump repeatedly has praised the authoritarian leader for his hardline policies and inflammatory rhetoric cnns national correspondent, Kristen Holmes, is in west palm beach, florida for us, not far from maralago kristen, what do we expecting from this meeting today . If im talking to a Senior Trump Adviser who described this as a quote, unquote, social meeting, obviously, pushing for details there. They said it was the friendly meeting between two people with no agenda. But of course, it is hard to see how viktor orban and donald trump could sit down with no agenda. These two powerful one, current leader, one former leader this is significant for a number of reasons why donald trump is not just the former president , but he is also the republican nominee presumptive nominee, and could be the next president other side of the coin here is that the white house did not issue orbit a formal invitation to come to the white house and orban did not reach out to the white house for any means. Meeting with any sit down in terms of the Biden Administration the other part of this that is significant is that if donald trump is to win november, this will give us an idea of who he is alive getting himself with in terms of world leaders, you mentioned there that viktor orban is a european autocratic, authoritarian. Its not so surprising because donald trump has often said that he admires the authoritarian leaders. I want you to listen to exactly what he has said about viktor orban whos a great man great leader in Europe Victor orban hes the, hes the Prime Minister of hungry. Hes a very great leader, very strong man. Some people dont like him because hes too strong if they have a strong man running your country nice to have a strong man running your country is sentiment. Weve heard from donald trump before. The two are also aligned politically on various topics, including immigration sen. They talk about building a wall. They have also both said separately that ukraine would not have gone to war, russia would not have invaded ukraine is donald trump was still in the the white house among many other policy agreements, wolf, lets not forget, hungry as a nato ally, indeed, i think thats significant as we see orban unfold our Kristen Holmes Have Reporting for us kristen, thank you very much. Lets discuss whats going on with the congress. Was sydney hoyer of democrat and former House Majority leader, congressman. Thank you so much for joining us on this important day let me start. Do you think President Bidens performance last night was enough to overcome american serious concerns. For example, about his age and his handling of areas like the border and the economy i think it was i think it was a very compelling powerful, articulate a recitation now only of what he had promised to do. But what he has a competent in the three years that hes been the phrase of the United States. So i think it was an gave lie to the fact he gave a 45 maybe a little more than that speech very articulate, very wellreasoned, and recited a lot of facts yesterday. Was there a teleprompter . But this was not a guy who was not in charge of it. Starts of his words and of the country. I think anybody who watched that speech saw a very strong, focused, knowledgeable individual who was having no trouble having rep. Or te with some of his detractors. He was on top of his game, so i would think the American People saw this president presenting an argument in a way that they thought was very able. Now, they may earn a map before him they may or may not think that what he said was what they wanted to hear him say. But what they did here is a person whos in charge not only of yourself, but of the country and of the future of this country. So i thought it was a very, very compelling address to the American People. And of course the record that he had to talk about is probably as good a record as any presence had in three years, perhaps since franklin roosevelt, certainly during the 43 years that ive been in congress. Interesting, he actually spoke by the way, for about 66 minutes. That was a very lengthy state of the Union Address indeed, the main he didnt flag for one minute. American public, i mean that in and of itself spoke to this silliness that none of us who speak with him personally we sit in meetings with him, have given questions and hear his answers that none of us believe was joe biden. What joe biden is thats what people saw last night. Yeah. Hes getting pretty good reviews, at least so far the main focus of the president s speech, as you know, congressman, was to dry a major contrast between himself and trump, who he referred to as we just noted, as his predecessor, 13 times if President Bidens goal was taking on trump, this forcefully, why didnt he call them out by name i think it was a strategy this guy, not donald trump, the person, but donald trump, the public . Luke figure, who has been president of the United States and who accomplished almost none of what he said it was going to accomplish other than that big tax cut, he said it was going to do infrastructure i have, this Make It In America Agenda that ive been pressing for 15 years. What joe biden did is what better than joe than trump trumps said he was going to do on infrastructure. And so many other things so i think what he wanted to do is say yes, i had a predecessor without mentioning him the personal, which frankly, you can figure out whether he has the characteristics to be president of the greatest country on earth. But that but this is what he didnt do or did do. And this is why i am asking you to continue the policies that were making america frankly the one of the best economic engines, the best economic engine is matter of fact, in the world. Thats a great, great accomplishment. Congress or lets turn quickly to immigration as you know. So the president seized on the fact that republicans tank the bipartisan border and foreign aid compromise. The legislation largely at trumps behest. Lets listen to this moment from last night. Listen yes november my team began serious negotiation of the Bipartisan Group of senators. The result was a bipartisan bill with the toughest set of Border Security reforms. Weve ever seen you dont think so . You dont like that bill that conservatives got together and said it was a good bill ill be darned. Thats amazing. And we showed our viewers a republican senator James Lankford, nodding his head as the president was speaking and saying true, James Lankford of oklahoma, who was in charge of the conservative republicans work on that bipartisan piece of legislation. What have you make of that congressman . Look, i think the president believes we need to act to make sure our borders are secure. Act to make sure that people are not coming into the country who are not authorized to come in country to make sure that people are bringing illicit drugs and other items into the country and he worked very hard with some very as he pointed out, conservative including jim lankford, senators to reach a bipartisan agreement. The problem is that the republicans in the House Of Representatives do not look for consensus. They do not look for agreement. They dont look to get things done. What they look to do is make their point. Notwithstanding fact that theyre point is not supported by their colleagues in the senate by the president United States, or by house democrats. So there simply do it our way or no way. Crowd. And they rejected a very strong step forward. That was the president s point. Thats lankfords point. The president the former president , is predecessors point is, its not good for my politics thats what politics over people people, politics over people that Presence Point congressman before i let you go, i want to just ask you about this speech last night. The president also announced that the United States will now build a temporary pier on the coast of gaza to help surge desperately needed humanitarian aid to the palestinians there. And he delivered further rather sharp message to israel. Listen to this leadership israel, i say this humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip. Protecting and saving innocent lives has to be priority. As we look to the future. The only real solution to the situation is a twostate solution over time so congressman will President Biden stronger message here, move the needle. When hes been facing growing backlash as you know, for his handling of the israel hamas war well, look, i think the president is doing exactly the right thing a, he said that israel needs to defeat hamas hamas has been a terror rising israel for a long period of time and has a central tenant of its program kill jews and eliminate israel any country thats confronts that kind of an enemy, understands its got to respond. And very frankly, former responses have not worked. We constantly had additional attacks, rocket attacks personal attacks by hamas notwithstanding Peace Agreements or secession of fire. So that thank you, ms absolutely right. And i think hes absolutely right on the fact that humanitarian concerns need to be at the forefront of our actions. I think the deployment, as a matter of fact, i had called the white house and suggested that we put some Hospital Ships out there as well, so that we can get people who need Health Emergency Care Hospital care, facility slowly, which is not in harms way, not being hidden under or around by hamas in a hospital or in a school, or in some other humanitary grand related agency. So that i think he he he he made the right balance and defeating terrorism, defeating hamas but also making sure that innocent civilians, men, women, and children are able to get out of harms way and get the treatment, food, nutrition that they need. So i think he set the right balance and we need to pursue that. Youre with the president on that, congressman steny hoyer. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you very much. Wolf. Let me do my work and pride sorry streaming exclusively on max a stronger than expected february jobs report sends markets higher this morning, the latest Government Data showing 275,000 jobs were added to payrolls last month, the Unemployment Rate also ticked higher to three as more americans step back into the jobs market, the biggest gains came in health care, government, and the Hospitality Industry and average Hourly Earnings are up by just about 4 year over year. Continuing an upward trend to discuss todays report and more, im joined by the acting secretary of labor, julie su, secretary. Thank you so much for joining us. First of all, what work can you tell us about this latest jobs report . A very significant number of jobs added this month, but the Unemployment Rate also climbed slightly, slightly higher to three that means the jobs market is getting bigger and more people are looking for jobs. What does that mean for the us that was a great summary. So that Unemployment Rate is still under 4 its been under 4 now for two years running. Thats the longest stretch in 50 years and as you mentioned, not only are people in the labor market well, its a sign of trust and hope. Its also real wages have gone up. Theyve been better than inflation, which means more spending money in the pockets of working families. Thats a good thing. Its fundamental to bidenomics. The president has been very clear that the only way were going to build the economy that farrakhan people need and deserve is if we invest in working people and make sure that workers do well. And that is what the overall numbers indicate. And that is the continued strong stable growth under President Bidens leadership. As you know, madame secretary, the president touted his economic record last night in the state of the Union Address. Listen to this the racial wealth gap is a smalls, its been in 20 years. Why do you keep going up and she keeps coming down . Inflation has dropped from 9 to 3 . The lowest in the world. And tending lower but its interesting, a recent poll from cbs news, for example, among other polls, is the latest example of what voters have been saying for quite a long time. The majority of americans, 57 in that poll view, the economy is quote, fairly bad or very bad . Why is there this massive disconnect between how the economy is doing, the very positive jobs numbers out there, for example, the economic numbers are pretty good and how people actually feel so we are starting to see some changes in those survey results, right . That is, i think partly a result of you you mentioned and the president thats your last night. The you know inflation has been cut by about two thirds since its peak. And that means that people are being there, able to go to the grocery historical, the pump, and feel that difference. I traveled the country. I was in atlanta earlier this week and then madison, wisconsin, and im talking to working people, families, young people who are in Training Programs for jobs they didnt even know existed employers who are looking for workers i think the overall numbers are just the macro sense of what were seeing on the ground, which is jobs being created, shovels in the ground people opening up facilities to build electric vehicles buses, and then to store them and make them part of their Public Transit system. All of those things improve lives for Working Americans and for american families. And thats what we want to see. Thats what were going to continue to work toward and your point in about the racial gap in unemployment is very important to the president and to me, were building an economy where no one gets left behind that means focusing on whos been excluded in the past and saying not this time, not on our watch. Madam secretary, what trajectory do you see for the labor market here in the United States . And the economy more broadly going forward, look ahead a little bit for us so im going to look back for one second, which is to say that everything that has happened in this economy was not promised it was not inevitable. In fact, people said when President Biden took office, there was no way where were going to see the kind of jobs recovery that weve seen the kinds of that we could map match, bringing prices down with increasing workers wages, and then people said, oh, my gosh, the markets too hot. And now everythings going to come crashing down. And none of those things have come to pass. And so the latest jobs number just for further confirm that when you have strong steady leadership, when you invest in Americas Industries and americas workers. And when you create jobs and then pathways for all communities so they can put their town into those jobs. Thats, thats a recipe for strength. And, you know, we talk about each months numbers, but the threemonth average for job creation she has 265,000 coaston tuna, 65,000 jobs or three month average feels like a soft landing as you can imagine the acting Labor Secretary, julie su, madam secretary. Thank you so much for joining us. Wilken tenure. This conversation down the road. Still to come, President Biden ended a passionate state of the Union Address last night. By mentioning the other elephant is in the room, namely, his age will have more on that. And voters reaction to the speech thats coming up next, stay with us. Youre in the cnn newsroom sunday. Com im paula reid in washington, and this is cnn during a state of the Union Address last night, a fiery President Biden did not shy away from what some essays is greatest Potential Weakness right now, namely his age if he wins in november, joe biden would become the oldest person elected president at the age of 81. Hes already the oldest person to hold the office in us history President Biden tried to put skepticism over his fitness for a second term to rest. Listen i know it may not look like if ive been around awhile when you get to be, certain things become clearer than ever an issue facing our nation isnt how old we are its how old are ideas. Hey anger, revenge, or retribution are the oldest of ideas. But you can lead america with ancient ideas. Only take us back joining us now to discuss cnns dana bash, shes our chief Political Correspondent and the anchor of Inside Politics, which follows this show right at the top of the hour. And cnn political director David Chalian is also the host of cnn political briefing. Thats a podcast dana, the president of actually used as a just to emphasize his qualifications to be reelected president. What did you make of that yeah, there have been jokes about it. Hes tried to cut the vulnerability with humor. This is the first time that he has done frankly, what a lot of people who we talked to a lot and i guarantee people who have who are strategists, who are those who feel that they have a lot of knowledge about how the president should, should run his campaign has been reaching out to the white house begging them to do Something Like this to make it not to own the age. Because what youre going to do about it and to make it about maturity and more importantly, experience. And it wasnt, wasnt just that wolf. He started his speech by talking about pro harbor and talking about world war or two, and talking about the fact that he was alive when that happened in quoting fdr, when he came before congress during world war ii. So that bookend really helped make that point, that hes going to own it because again, he doesnt have any choice. Yeah theres huge sigh of relief from democratic sources across the board last night that he showed up in the manner in which he showed up, not that big this puts to rest for the entirety of the cycle. It will remain a question. Theres no doubt, but that it it quieted down this nervousness that we were all hearing from sources about whether or not hes really up for this Campaign Season. And last night he answered that at least for his home team of democrats to feel pretty much better about those, about those flashbulbs that you have showing views from viewers before this speech. After this, thats right. And we should note that this is a poll of speech viewers. And so when its a democratic president , it tends to be a bigger democratic sample thats whos watching the audience. But if you look, we asked competence in President Bidens ability to carry out his duties. So prespeech, this group of speech watchers, which again he percent more democratic than the general public 25 said a lot of competence and his ability to carry out his duties. 27 said some roughly half, 48 said none. Look what happened over the course of the speech. It goes from 25 to 31 who say a lot roughly. Some stays about the same. And those that said no confidence in his ability to carry out his duties actually went down over the course of this. You know, i know. Of course have to make clear that that flash poll was veteran vast majority, but it was a lot of democrats, more thats the word im looking for about 37 democrat, 30 independent republics in this particular case. I would argue that that is still telling because one of the major challenges that the Biden Campaign has is to shore up his party is to shore up his base and sure. A lot of the sort of consternation is about specific policies in his base, but its not just that its about the overall feeling of is this the guy who can do it later today . Were going to get the ratings from the Cable News Networks the broadcast networks. How many, millions and millions of people were actually watching tens of millions. Im sure will be that number. Theres a lot of people who are watching based on previous state of the Union Addresses, does that necessarily turn into potential support for the incumbent . Weve seen some state of the Union Addresses lets give a little bump to a precedent. But i i actually am not convinced that will happen here, even though its been wellreceived danas point is the critical one of understanding the support though we have been talking for the entirety of this Campaign Season thus far about joe bidens Frame Coalition from support in his own quarter, democratic supporters from his 2020 coalition. Last night, i think he did a ton to bring them back home. And now hes got to Start Building on top of that. If hes going to be in a Competitive Position for reelection he hasnt been Competitive Position, but if hes going to try and really pull ahead because he is running behind right now. Well see if this gives them a little bit of a bump that he can then build on. That as were speaking, we just learned that ronna mcdaniel, the chair of the Republican National committee, has now officially step down. So tell us what that means. Shes the longest serving the fact that shes a woman, the second woman i believe to have that role now, presumptive nominee put her in that spot the last time trump trump did, when he took her out in her home state of michigan where she was the state chair there and said you should run the party and shes running for a long time. He lost confidence in her. He lost confidence in her because she endorsed the notion of debates. He thought that he should be treated as an incumbent and that there shouldnt be debates. And she didnt want to pay his legal bills anymore. In fact, the way the rules holes were said, she really couldnt pay his legal bills anymore. And when you look at what the consequences are of what were going to see now. Its not unusual for a candidate to try to get their people inside the Party Apparatus that is going to happen now what is unusual is that because this particular candidate has so much liability when it comes to his legal bills theyre very likely going to pay them again. And that was a bit of a debate inside the party hes going to put his daughterinlaw in there and shes made clear publicly she thinks its just fine for them for the party to use donor money to pay his legal bills trump is clearly taking charge of the Republican Party unprecedented nature. I mean, what candidate before had to get the party to pay their legal well bills well, he got a lot of legal bills. Exactly. All right, guys. Thank you very much. David chalian, dana bash, important note. Be sure to watch dana in about 20 minutes right at the top of the hour on Inside Politics, shes got an excellent show coming up. Well all be watching and theres more news were following. But us, how you get the compensation, you deserve, 800 to eight to 44, 44 new this morning, donald trump post say 92 million bond as he appeals the E Jean Carroll Defamation Case against them. Cnn correspondent Kara Scannell is joining us right now. Kara, what are you learning ups, ups, explain whats going on yeah. Well, so trump has meant that deadline in this case, it was its technically tomorrow and he would generally have until monday to meet it, but he posted the bond today, 91 million. And he said hes going to appeal that at million judgment that the jury awarded e. Jean carroll in the Defamation Case. Now he posted bond that is larger than the award because that is the common practice in the district court. Its to cover some of the interests that he would have to pay on this bond what this means is that donald trump got someone to help him write this ban, this large Insurance Company called chub, their underwriting the bond. And this will cover the appeal of this case. And these damages only its not for future appeals and trump, as we know, weve seen the bond, you can see the signature on it. He signed it on tuesday, so he was able to get this ban locked up in sin even as he was asking the judge to give him more time to come up with the money and to post the bonds. So hes had it in hand. Of course, this comes trump has about two weeks to come up with 454 million to satisfy at the judgment in the new York Attorney generals civil fraud case. That is a much bigger amount of money that hell need to front and he is asked in Appeals Court in that case to give him time to not force him to post the bond until he appeals the verdict in that case where the judge found him liable, the Appeals Court is expected to make a decision on that later. That this month. That is just when that deadline is for him. So these two things will be coming down to the wire. Yet again, wolf, lets see if you come up with nearly a half, 1 billion. Lets see, liquid all that money has really is Kara Scannell. Families of the 239 people on board have urged officials to relaunch the search. And this week, the malaysian government says it might do so. I want to bring in someone who has covered this story for a long time. Cnn Business Editor at large, richard quest. Richard, you also wrote a very important book about the search for this plane. And now ten years later, do you think were any closer at all to solving this huge mystery . Oh, there no, were not. Because until we find the plane, we just wont be able to find out what happened. All the same theories the Roll Unvarnished truth is we know very little more now about how that plane crashed, why it crashed, or indeed where it crashed. And thats why the Ocean Infinity search is going to be so important because theyre going to go down. They say they have new technologies. And wolf, this is what they are hoping that theyre going to find when they get down that the version june of this, the black box. I dont know why they as you know, well read. This would have stopped transmitting ten years ago but it is designed to withstand tremendous forces. And being underwater. Now, if they are able to find the wreckage thats a big if im locate the box, a very big if then we stand a chance. But even if they just find the wreck, they just they will still be able to tell a lot more than more wreckage they can find the better the experts, the forensics will be able to say, well, it looks like this happened. It looked like that happen so far weve just got one or two pieces you know, its interesting, richard, a ten years ago, i spent a lot of time on my show, the Situation Room covering this story. We reported extensively how extraordinary is it that a plane like this simply disappears . Wolf, if ten years ago, youd said to me, theyll never find the plane and ten years later will i have taken out of value talking nonsense. And then of course they will find the plane. I still hold to the view that they must find the plane. Now, weve got various new regulations about how often planes have to report the sorts of technology they have, the sort of black boxes that get thrown off the plane. Now is its crashing so that we would know where they are. But the reality is we dont know where it is. The reality we dont know what happened. And in the great scheme of aviation that cannot be allowed to be the final word but whether or not it takes another 510 or 15 years to get to the absolute answer i hope they saw this Mh370 Mystery once and for all it is so important, richard quest, thanks for all your excellent, excellent reporting.
