you for joining us tonight. i'm caitlin collins in tel aviv. >> and i'm alex in washington, have a good night. welcome to the whole story i'm anderson cooper in tel aviv. the attack left 1400 people dead, more than 200 people have been held hostage according to the israeli officials. many more people are still unaccounted for. in response, israel began a bombing campaign according to the hamas control health ministry with more thousands dying so far. the story is complex. . its roroots go back toto t the formation of israel in 1948. there was a military wing that perpetrated the terror attack. we have the whole story from how they were formed, what their ideology is and how they have evolved over the decades. we want to warn you that some of the images you will see in the hour may unprecedented. hamas had certainly targeted israeli civilians before, that's nothing new. what's new is the scale, the ruthlessness. >> how do you define hamas? who and what is hamas? >> hamas primarily is a social religious political movement. >> hamas seen as part of the social fabric. there are many who cannot stand hamas but there are many neighbors and friends who are hamas supporters with several different aspects to them . they have a military wing and also have political and social services. they call themselves the islamic resistance movement. it's a comprehensive one. >> hamas is a nationalist movement that is committed to the notion of armed struggle for the liberation of palestine. out of the different factions that exist, hamas is the only party that has the organized military and a well resourced military force. what this means, for many palestinians, they are the only party that could actually defend the palestinian civilians against the israeli aggression. >> this is the reality. that's how many palestinians view and consider them . the line of defense. >> since 2007, hamas has governed the gaza strip, a 25 mile long 7 mile wide stretch of land with more than 2 million people largely cut off from the world by an israeli blockade. the area humanitarian rights groups have called an open air prison. the rise of hamas and what led to its massacre of more than 1000 men, women, and children in israel, that is a story that begins long before hamas ever existed. >> this didn't start on october 7 . >> helping in the protection of holy land from disorder. >> the british had a mandate to govern palestine. the mandate said a couple of things, repair them for dependents and facilitate a jewish national hub. they tried various mechanisms to make them agree on some kind of settlement and the british found they could not do both so they gave up. they just left after world war ii. they said we can't deal with it. >> this moves to another to stage of discussion. >> they came to the conclusion the best solution would be to take the land and divided, roughly speaking after the palestinians were given half. the other half to the israelis. the are accepting of this at the arabs do not so war broke out. >> they fought each other bitterly and relentlessly. >> as a result of the war, the state of israel declared itself and took control, not simply of the territory that they had allotted to it but other territories as well. a lot of which had significant palestinian populations >> a jewish state, israel born in a bath of blood . >> the birth of the sea of israel for palestinians. they needed to be announced. more than 700,000 palestinians fled outside of the land of palestine and palestine was essentially decimated. >> they are held with evacuation to offer. >> israel set essentially we aren't allowing them to return so you may have thought you were leaving for the week but you are not coming back. >> by the end of 1948 the newly formed israel had claimed 78% of the land of historic palestine. the palestinians who had not fled to the neighboring countries settled in the remaining 22% of the land that israel had yet to conquer. >> what's left is the west bank in gaza. the egyptians control gaza, the jordanians control the west bank. that's how this was until the 1967 year when the armies amassed on israel's border. >> here at the frontier of the gaza strip, a mere kilometer away. >> 1967, one of the biggest historical moments in the middle east. israel launches a surprise attack against egypt. >> the forces have routed the armed might of their neighbors. >> the israelis conquer the west bank in gaza. it's a moment of great exhilaration in israel because they feel as though they have treated the arab armies in this extraordinary military success that they have not figured out what they will do with the millions of palestinians on this land. >> after the six-day war the millions who fled to gaza and the west bank in 1948 are officially under israeli occupation. >> that left all of the people all in the west bank citizens of nowhere. they weren't citizens of the israeli state so they were just stuck. >> we need to liberate ourselves. >> throughout the 70s and 80s bursts of violence between the palestinians and israelis were commonplace. the liberation organization which is formally recognized by the world was led by the one operating in exile outside of the palestinian territories. inside gaza, a new resistance movement was underway. >> one of the biggest mobilizations of the palestinian civil societies and actors against the military occupation. the idea was that they were distraught, they would destroy the occupation so that they refused to open the shops and block highways and refused to give tax. this was a time of significant agitation. >> around the same time, islam is within gaza and the west bank shifted focus to a more aggressive approach toward their israeli occupiers and a new armed resistance group would emerge. officially known as hamas. >> this was a spiritual leader in the gaza strip. one of the earliest founders and leaders of the muslim brotherhood chapters in palestine and when hamas was established in 1987 he emerged as the leader of the movement and in some ways, a spiritual guide of the movement. >> unlike the palestinian resistance the newly established hamas was not interested in liberating gaza or the west bank alone. instead they set out to eliminate the state of israel altogether as outlined in its 1988 charge her. a goal that made hamas an outsider to any peace negotiations including the oslo accords. >> as our rules have been long so must the healing be swift. >> this resulted in they recognized the state of israel and so they conceded 70% of the historic palestine and in return the israeli government recognized the sole legitimate representative of the palestinian group. there was jubilation and many palestinians despite this historic concession believed that this could pave the way to the establishment of the state of 22%. this was by no means noncontroversial or unchallenged. for hamas is specifically this was something that they were fundamentally opposed to. >> those negotiations never really got off of the ground. one of the reasons being, the upsurge of violence. >> one of the deadliest attacks to house photo op . >> muslims were worshiping at the mosque. dozens have been injured and were rushed to hospitals in the nearby towns. >> it was a turning point because they then decided to begin employing suicide bombings as a form of resistance. >> 41 days after the attack, hamas responded detonating its first lethal suicide attack killing 70 israelis at a bus stop. >> the big reason that they failed was violence. the perception of the sides is that they were adversaries. this did not completely stopped terrorism. they said the israelis were dragging their feet. increasing the settlements as they may promises that they would leave. >> the fundamental reason that they have gained strength. the palestinian authority which is the competition has been seen as reckless, corrupt, and unable to deliver on its core promise which was the palestinian state. >> to the west, they were not a negotiating partner but instead they became a threat and in 1997 the u.s. officially designated hamas as a foreign terrorist organization. >> if you protest nonviolently and so on you are shot at. they left only one avenue actually which was armed resistance. >> hamas has decided they will use violence against civilians and it will be brutal. >> over the next decade, they continued their violence and would meet with more violence in return. will they go home with the deal? the just like we did a week ago and they thought it would be over and we'd with back in ten days. everything would be fine. and they've been dispossessed of their lands ever since. >> the military in crisis in gaza seems to be growing worse by the hour. >> the dead are piling up. all of this only the beginning as troops hundreds of thousands of the israeli troops amassing on that border. >> as the worlds watches and waits the death toll is already staggering. this cnn graphic detailing fatalities in the conflict over the past 15 years shows more palestinians have died each and every year and the latest violence moves in the same direction with profoundly more loss of life on the palestinian side since the horrific hamas attack on israel on october 7th.
