Im sara sidner in tel aviv and news on the dozens of hostages in the hands of hamas in gaza. We have learned significant progress in the press to release the more than 200 hostages. The latest on the war in israel. Im john berman in lewiston, maine, and the authorities are searching ground air and now water for the suspected mass killer. And now, we have an important update from the Law Enforcement that the divers are going into the river to search for a possible body. Im kate bolduan in new york, and the focus on the 18 lives lost in the tragedy. We are learning more about the victims and how they are being remembered today. This is cnn news central. All right. We just got an important update on the Manhunt For Mass Shooting suspect robert card who is still very much at large. It has been nearly 40 hours since 18 people were murdered in two locations here in lewiston, maine. It is still an active manhunt. There is still a shelter in place order that covers some 700 square miles, and Tens Of Thousands of people. We have key new information of what the authorities are doing today in this manhunt, and one of the focus this morning, just one, it is the boat launch where the suspects car was found not long after the shootings took place. The boat launch and the Androscoggin River, and a great deal of active coming there in the coming hours. We go to omar jimenez who is near there, and go through what we have just learned moments ago. Yeah, so we learned a lot, but we are also left with a lot of questions. For starters, investigators or police gave us the scope of the leads and tips they have been getting. Multitude, and they laid out over 530 tips and leads they have been getting and varying in what was credible and what wasnt, but it is an idea there. And also, they gave some clarity to what happened last night, but in the context of the moving forward, and what happened last night, they were outside of a House Shouting come out with your hands up, and they say routine search warrant, and we will see more of that in places across the area, and maybe it could be because someone is there and could not be, and it is part of the process. They also laid out a Multi Faceted approach by land, by air, and to search for this person, and not just on the water, and literally in the water. Take a listen to maines Public Safety director. We will be putting divers in the water. This is going to be looking like a major focus today with a lot of other people, but we have a lot of other irons in the fire, so we are not saying that we know that the suspect is in the water, and that is what we are do, but you will be seeing activity here, and so i am telling you that in advance and we have nothing to hide there at all. And we also have sonar going to be utilized here. Reporter one of the interesting things that he said there as well is that they have been working with the Power Companies that control the dams around here, and so they were able to slow or hoping to use to their advantage to slow the flow of the water to make it easier for their divers to get in there and get it easier to find some clues to finding the suspect. That is one plane of the investigation, and maybe the priority at this point, and the other is to find out what happened at these particular venues, and also, what led this suspect to go on the Shooting Rampage for starters at the venues. At the Bowling Alley just past this caution tape, they say they are continuing to piece through every square inch of this particular venue, and they say that every shell casing from the bullet could be a clue that helps them out here, but they are also trying to process what is over 70 witness statements here to aid them in the forwardlooking investigation. There is a lot of work to be done there, and another piece alluded to the family of card, the suspect, he as been on thec not get into the specificities, but there is a sisterinlaw of the Shooting Suspect who said that we are heart broken and this is beyond belief, and we are doing all we can with Law Enforcement to give all of the information that we can, and the hearts and prayers are with the families and they are not make any more statements, but it is what has shaken this community to the core, and communities remaining under shelter in place to the second day, and among those questioned, and still having questions of when the shelter in place order is going to be lifted and when these people can feel like they can go back to some semblance of normalcy even if they have not found the person who caused them so much harm, john. A lot of questions here. Yeah, and the answer to that is that we will take it on a daytoday and momentbymoment basis, and the shelter in place order is still in effect. And the bar behind me, schemengees, there is a greater Law Enforcement presence there, and processing the crime scene, and every bullet, shell casing and car in the parking lot going through to try to piece together exactly what happened, kate, as best they can. Absolutely right. While that Crime Scene Processing is happening, and the search for the mass Shooting Suspect happens, we are learning more about the lives tragically lost and now including a bludgeoned interpreter for the deaf. Joshua seals of Pine Tree Society says that he was participating in the cornhole tournament. He is the husband and father of four, and he is a tireless advocate for the Deaf Community, and he served for the lead interpreters to the deaf in maine governors pandemic briefings. We also know more about father and son bill and aaron young. We have learned that they were bowling together when this tragedy unfolded, and according to reuters neither of them survived. Aaron was just 14 years old. And then there is arthur artie stroud at schemengees wednesday night with his father. His dad left the restaurant ten minutes before the shooting began, and arties dad says that his son is survived by five children. Also at schemengees was 35yearold Peyton Brewer ross, and his dad said that he loved to be a dad more than anything else. His daughter elle has just turned 2 years old. Tommy conrad was a manager at the Bowling Alley, and he was also a dad, and we are told that he is survived by his 9yearold daughter. And the other victims and the names and the stories, and they go on and on. It is painful to read through them and hear about their lives. These victims, they came from all Walks Of Life and the age, and one of them a young boy just 14 years old and as we are learning about them, and learning more about them that night, kate, what we are learning is how so many of the victims tried to stop what was happening, and they tried to protect other people. I mean, looking at Joseph Walker for example, he was a manager at the bar. We spoke to his father, and his father speaking to cnn and he said that his son tried to stop the gunman with a butcher knife. He leaves behind a wife, children and grandchildren. Leroy walker, his father, when he spoke to cnn talked about his son and about how he remembers hi him. Loved by many. Loved by myself. He would love back to everybody. So, i know that he would do such a thing to save lives and not let somebody hurt the people he loved, and this is family, and for somebody to do this to so many families as well as mine, is just crazy. It leaves you an empty hole that i dont know how it will ever be filled. Pray for everybody. Pray for the people that passed away with my son. Pray to the lord that this does not happen again in our commu community. Leroy walker showing incredible strength to speak about his son. I also wanted to talk about Patricia Asselin who worked parttime at the Bowling Alley, and she also tried to do her part. She went to the counter and tried to call 911 when the shooter took her life. Also, there is brian mcfarlane, and you were speaking about the Deaf Community and i spoke to his sister last night, and she is deaf, and bryan was deaf as well, and he was there for the cornhole tournament, and his life taken as well. There is also Michael Deslauriers ii, and he says that his friend and he were killed trying to stop the gunman and trying to protect their wives and children, and his father said that they made sure their wives and several Young Children were undercover when they charged the shooter. What is striking, kate, as you know, is how the families when dealing with mourning and dealing with so much find the strength to talk about their loved ones in this type of situation. It is incredible. And it is just mad epping what they are going through and what you know that they went through in the final moments. Jason, thank you so much. And when we go back to the community, it is the community trying to find robert card. And also joining me is Daniel Brunner who is a former fbi and chris, also former fbi, and we have learned in the fbi, we have learned more of what they are going to be searching, but publicly, they are not talking about how there are no known leads, and they do not appear to be, they are not reporting having any sightings at all. Do you see that as a problem this far out or should people not read into that . No, i think that you can read into that they really dont have a lot of viable leads. There are only three things that could have happened at the car scene. One a switch car and he is long gone. Two, he goes Into The Woods and either by boat or foot, and he has three or four hours of lead time and covers a lot of distance to presumably prepositioned, preselected location, and third they introduced to day which is highly, highly unlikely and he killed himself in the river or at the side of the river, and that is to me, it seem like a very elaborate box checking exercise. So i have to hope and think that they are setting up a perimeter around all of the roads in that vast wooded area, and this is reminding me of a search for the olympic bomber that i led in the late 1990s, and i see that as the most viable option, and if that is the case, it is going to be a while before he is caught. I will say, it does not look like there is any perimeter set up or roadblocks except around the specific search areas like the Boat Launch Area or the neighborhood where the houses are. Daniel, can you tell us what you take away are the that . Well, like they said in the Press Conference, you dont want to send people out in various areas and hope they run into something, because there is a number of wooded areas, and focus the energy on the where he was, and utilizing and finding the cell phone and looking at the cell phone track, because everywhere you go, the cell phone is providing a position to the cell phone provider, and i am sure that the Investigative Team is looking at that cell phone for the past two years, and everywhere he went, and the stores and what did he buy on such and such a date, and where did he go, and did he go Into The Woods and find those positions, and as to where he went on the river, and utilizing the historical area and work that he was doing possibly in preparation will reveal more clues as to where the investigative Command Center can focus the energy, and utilizing the tips from the public, and every single tip looked at, and lot of looking at where he was will reveal at where he could be right now. And chris, with the cell phone that he left behind and the note that he left behind, and it is described as a suicide note, and not speaking to the actual motive for the heinous crime, and could that be a break or is this just, is this just adding more to picture . I know john is very credible, but i think that this killer made no effort to put on a mask or disguise himself. He went in there full well knowing that he would be identified so by the very nature he knows that he is come out of this not knowing it is not going to end well for him, and Farewell Note or some say suicide note, but i describe it farewell. He did want to escape, and he made elaborate efforts to escape, and created a lot of confusion by hitting two sites and then he had probably three or four hours of lead time to cover a lot of time, and the survival instincts are there and were there. So i dont see this immediate suicide or suicide shortly after the act as something viable right now, but of course that is why they are by the river, and i dont believe they will be coming up with anything right there by where the car is. Daniel, i want to talk about the shelter in place which is focused nearly with lewiston which is the second most populous area here in maine, and also bowdoin and lisbon, and who is this really for . The safe Toif Ity Of The Indivi and look, if you are in shelter in place, or is that to make the Search Efforts for Law Enforcement go more easily . Absolutely to make the Search Efforts more easy, because if you have cars out there and people commuting back and forth and people out in the yards, and that is more activity to investigate. Is that person suspicious or that person is going to be relatively matching the description of the subject. It is just adding more investigative need, and it is going to take strain away from the Law Enforcement team, and the tactical teams out there, and the investigators out there, and it is just going to add more, and additionally for the safety of the community. As we saw in the pennsylvania fugitive, he walked into the garage, and grabbed a gun and exchanged gun fire with that individual, and telling the people to be sheltered in place, and lock your doors, and provides not giving him a resource, a Fugitive A Resource to maybe get into the house or maybe steal somebodys car, and it is just making his life more difficult. If you make his life more difficult, he creates an opportunity to make a mistake, and then Law Enforcement can jum on it like the Pennsylvania Funtive and then the Law Enforcement can move in on him. And chris, the kind of the everyone, hold on one second. We have Shimon Prokupiez, and i want to get back to him, because he is on scene. What are you seeing . So, we are driving back into lisbon back into the boat area, and we saw a ton of officers racing to this area, and i want to get out, because you can see it there in the distance, the officers here from the Lisbon Police department, but surrounding Police Departments have gathered here. We dont know why they are all out here with their long guns, and we saw the officers all racing here, and they raced through this dirt area here, and now they are sort of gathered there. What has been happening a lot, and we dont know if that is what happened here is that the Police Departments are receiving 911 calls and tips from the Community Members of suspicious activity, and perhaps this is what they are responding to here, but this is the neighborhood, and this is the community of lisbon where he dumped his car, and it is not far from here, and where the police have been doing a lot of the searching. And is, you are seeing more officers here from the federal protective services, and other Law Enforcement agencies which we have not seen before gathering here, and kate, they are trying to figure out the next steps. We dont see helicopters or drones in the air, but right now, all we are seeing is several officers gathered here, and you can see they are talking, and i assume trying to figure out what to do. I am assuming this is relative to some tip they have received. So can you describe what is that like a greenhouse or where is this . Yeah, so s. This is looking like a sign out here that says lettuce be your farm and you can see the sign here. Now, we are just waiting to see if more officers gather. And what is happening here, kate, they are trying to figure out what they are going to do, and again, we dont know what brought them here, but right now, as you can see, they are standing around, and as they have been doing here a lot, they have been responding in this way, and the response is a little bigger here than we have seen in prior occasions, so. Perhaps something significant has occurred here, and you can see now the officers are moving towards a location, so they are going to be out of our view here. We now hear a helicopter here. I was going to say, i can hear it now. We are going to move to the left, and try to move to the left to get a better shot looking down here from another Vantage Point here by this house. Take a look down. And we are far enough back, and the officers told us this is the area to stand in, so we can see what is going on, and i am going to try to see here. So, yeah, there is definitely a helicopter now over the air, and so, you can see this is, yeah. We can see them there, and bob can see them walking towards the area. And so, we are walking in the way as the officers continue to move towards area here. Are the guns drawn . They are out of the way. Shimon, stay safe and out of the way of the Law Enforcement. So, i have lost them. Do you know how long it would be if someone wanted to walk from the boat launch to where you are situated . John, shimon might have lost ifb, and lost connection. Okay. I think that we lost our Ifb Connection with shimon and we will be back to connect, and he will reposition the camera and continue to bring those developments, and as you can see as they are moving around, and you can see the Police Presence there, and bring you some updates from shimon on the ground, and john berman and back to israel, because coming up, word of as it is described significant progress in the talks to free the hostages who are still being held by Hamas Terrorists in gaza coming as israel is making more targeted raids in gaza, and preparing for the next steps in the war. And we will get to that, and l, the republican congressman George Santos says that he is not going to resign even though the republican colleagues are trying to toss him out of congress. The latest from capitol hill from that is also ahead. John berman in lewiston, maine, where we are going to a farm where there is a farm not terribly far from the boat launch where robert cards car was found the night of the Mass Shootings here. Our Shimon Prokupiez is standing by where there seems to be some Law Enforcement activity taking place, and shimon, tell us what you are seeing. Right. So, john, what we are seeing is the Lisbon Police officers and the community where, this is the area where the suspect left his car. This is the place where the officers are facing or looking towards the woods here, and two officers on this side who are establishing the perimeter or keeping a look out towards the woods. They told us to stay back where we are, and they told us we are safe, and stay out of the woods. There are several at least a dozen other officers with the long guns and, you know, looking similar to these officers on the other side, and they went in deeper into the greenhouse and into this farm area clearly searching for something. We dont know what led them here, but they are responding enforce here. There are, you can see at least two dozen Police Vehicles here, and now you can see one of the officers moving around here. But it seem like these two officers are on the outside watching the perimeter while at least a dozen other officers are more deeper inside, and i dont know if this officer is coming over to talk to us or what, but he is coming over this way, and they are asking us to move back, john. So we are going to move back. They are going to ask us to move back. Okay. With rem we are moving back. We are moving back, john. Okay. You can move back, and as you relocate and stay on the scene as much as you possibly k and lisbon is important in the search operation, and lisbon is important in the search operation, because that is where the boat launch okay. All right. Back to you. Hold on, because we want to talk to someone, a witness here. Yeah, so it is all flattened out, and it is all woods around. Did you hear something, sir, or what . I heard a gunshot, and i dont know for sure, but i thought that it was a gunshot. Did you call 911 . No. And how did you know to come here . The helicopter was here, and when the police came, and they said, did you hear a gunshot, and yes, and what direction and there. How many of you in the Metal Containers . Four of us. I have to go. What did you think when you heard the gunshot . I thought we have to get out of here. From where in ontario . Reporter okay. So this is someone who works here on the farm. The police are asking him to get off of the property now, so we are moving, because but he is someone who works there, and we were talking to him, and he said that he heard a gunshot, and that when the police, he says, he said that the Police Showed up, and this is now we know why the police are here. Something relating to a possible gunshot, and he could have been mistaken and may not actually be a gunshot, but the community here, and john, it is important to note that the community is on edge, and any suspicious activity, around certainly, they will call it in, and it is going to prompt a Police Response and now we know why the police are here, and the man says there is what appears to be a sound of a gunshot, and now the police are going to be searching this area, and they have asked us to move back, and that why we are back here, john. All right. Keep moving if you to, shimon, but stick with us, and this is why lisbon is important, because it is one of the communities important in the search, because boat launch is near the Androscoggin River where the suspects car was found, and you are in lisbon, and you are not terribly far where the witnesses have reported hearing a gunshot, and shimon, one gunshot, and specify whether they believed it came from the woods . Yes. He said it, again, it sounded like a gunshot, and it may not, and it is important to note that the people here are saying that, but i think out of a sense of precaution to make sure that nothing is going on, the police are here. So he believes what he described is something sounding like a gunshot, and he said that in his mind is that i have to get out of here, and that is when the Police Responded here, and as we have been seeing enforce here. And then we saw the officers in the other direction, and we saw helicopters and government helicopters overhead, but now they have gone and we dont know where they are. But that is the situation here. And again, just to be clear yes. So look around and stay safe. I want people to know that where you are is less than a mile from the boat launch where the suspects car was found. Less than a mile. Where you are at is called spring works farm, less than a mile, and it is on the same road as the boat launch, but i assume that you could walk through the woods to get there, and where the witnesses reported hearing Something Like a gunshot, but we dont know whether it is a gunshot, but sounded like it. Is there a perimeter setup, shimon, and Something Like a perimeter set up around the boat launch so that if the suspect was still there that they would somehow restrict his movement . No. There hasnt been. Yesterday, there was some roadblocks or barriers set up, but there were not any Law Enforcement officials manning most of those barriers, and what we have seen is blockades put up, barriers that anyone can come through. No, today, is the first time we have heard in the Press Conference of a organizing a search for the first time today, but there is no perimeter, and it is kind of very open, and the media that has been here since yesterday, and we have been able to get around freely, and see the things and we have seen other searches going on, and it is pretty open, so to answer the question, there is not really what has been a perimeter, and what is happening often here is that the local police department, and the Lisbon Police department has been responding to the 911 calls, and the people seeing thing, and hearing things, and that is sushlly what promp usually wh prompts a response. So someone who works on the farm says he thinks that he heard a gunshot, and that is what prompted this response from the pol police. A witness said that he heard something that he thought was a gunshot, and so now, shimon and the team are backed up and they are searching this, and maybe it is the type of thing that we have seen over the past several days, but there are certainly more Law Enforcement arriving, but there are not, and that is what you would expect to see if there is Something Real or urgent, but we will wait and see, shimon, and keep you posted over the next several moments. What more can you tell us . Yes, these negotiations are being made by qatar, and significant progress is being made, and i am told by a diplomatic source that the talks are ongoing and we are remaining hopeful. Now, absolutely clear what we do know and dont know. We know that there are at least 220 hostaging being held in gaza, and these are foreign nationals and israeli citizens. We dont know what the numbers are specifically on that split. Nor do we know whether all of the hostages are actually being held by hamas or whether some of them could be being held with other groups. This qatarled negotiation is specifically with hamas at the moment. We also dont know the minutia of the details here, but as we understand it, we know that hamas has been asking for a pause in the fighting and a ceasefire period with as many as five days with a number of sources had been suggested to me, and they are looking and demanding that the Border Crossing at rafah is open for more medical aid, food, and to get through that crossing and something that egypt will be involved in, because the rafah Border Crossing is in play. And we have not seen a pause in the fighting as of yet, so we have to wait to see, and we dont understand at this point what the israeli demands are. We know that certainly israel had wanted to see a significant number, and maybe all of the civilians released at the same time, and that could be 50 or more people at this point, but the details as i say are unclear at this point. Suffice to say that the senior negotiator for qatar has said that the mediators need a period of calm. They say that the situation as we know in gaza is a nigh on catastrophe and they need a pause or period of calm to get the negotiations on track. We have a u. S. Official telling cnn that while they welcome this optimism, they are cautious about the term breakthrough. I was told that word is being used. They do feel that there has been a breakthrough according to the diplomatic sources, but we have be cautious what that breakthrough is at this point, and what it is that we might see in the hours to come. Well, there is certainly a lot of families, dozens ofamilies waiting to hear something, anything about their loved ones there, and we should mention air strikes again today in gaza by israel, and these air strikes over the last three weeks have been devastating to gaza, to hamas, and the civilians there with thousands dead according to the palestinian ministry. And also, there are rockets that have come over, and folks who have seen them here in tel aviv here, and we see them just about everyday and the war is just about on as the negotiations are making all of this tricky, and Becky Anderson, thank you for your reporting there on the status of the hostages that hamas has in gaza. To update you on something we saw a few minutes ago, shimon prokupecz, we saw a presence at a farm less that be one mile where the suspects car was last found. You can see some video of what we were just look ing at moment ago. Shimon tells us they were investigating a tip, some of the more than 530 tips that have come into Law Enforcement over the last 40 plus hours now. They got a tip. Someone at the farm reported they heard something that so sounded like a gunshot. Law enforcement went there and is checking it out right now. It goes to show you where this investigation is at this moment. Mainly, that there is still a manhunt underway for robert card, who is still believed to be armed and dangerous. Theres still this shelter in place situation for some 700 square miles, including Tens Of Thousands of people. And the only update that we have from Law Enforcement is what they will be doing today, which involves more search ises like the one youre seeing on the screen now as tips come in, but also focusing on some specific areas, including primarily the river where that car was found. They are going to have divers searching the river for evidence, but also for the possibility of finding the body of robert card to rule out the possibility that he may have killed himself and be in that river right now. Some of the reporting weve been getting in that is right now still no confirmed sightings, as you know. And no known leads, though they are following up on these hundreds of tips that have been coming in. We have the new reporting today that investigators have found, a cell phone belonging to robert card, that he left behind, as well as a note that was left behind. Though investigators tell evan perez that it doesnt say anything to motive. So there is information, but this is still a lot of Unanswered Questions and so much still happening as youre seeing behind you, theres a processing that crime scene for a couple more days.
