Trumps efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Sources tell cnn that georgia prosecutors now have Text Messages and emails directly connecting trumps legal team to a Voting System breach in Coffee County, georgia in january 2021. This comes as the district investigating trump in georgia appears to be close to an indictment. Fulton County District attorney fani willis is expected to seek charges against more than a dozen people. If she brings charges against the former president , it would be the fourth indictment of trump since being voted out of office. We have coverage of these new developments. Isabel rosales is outside the Fulton County court where Security Preparations under way. And we have Cnns Zachary Cohen with these new developments. Zach, lets begin with you. Tell us more about what youre learning and this new evidence. Reporter fred, these are texts, our sources are telling us, are in the hands of the prosecutors in georgia. The Text Messages really lay out a plan that links trumps own attorneys to the operatives on the ground who did get access to these Voting Systems in Coffee County, georgia. The texts show the days leading up to the attorneys, trump operatives and attorneys were trying to secure a written invitation from an Elections Official in Coffee County that they would use as an excuse or validation to get access to Voting Systems they didnt have a right to access. These text link Rudy Giuliani and also his former Attorney Sidney Powell who we know was instrumental in helping fund getting access to these Voting Systems, not just in Coffee County but other states as well. This is what fani willis is investigating in terms of the broader investigation into overturning the election. Zach, what do you expect will be the sequence of events potentially . Were expecting prosecutors will start laying out their case before the grand jury this week. That will include witnesses who will come in and testify before the grand jury as early as tuesday. The indications are we could see indictments as early as tuesday, too. We could see trump and maybe even up to a dozen other people face charges early this week, maybe even as early as tuesday. Isabel, what can you tell us about Security Preparations for this potential grand jury hearing, possible indictment of the former president. Fred, The Big Question here is willful ton county be yet another place where trump is charged and then arrested. Despite the answer to that, it looks like Fulton County is ready. They have a heavier Police Presence than normal around the courthouse. Over the past couple minutes weve seen Law Enforcement officers patrolling the area around the building, some with canines. Also these orange barricades surrounding the building, these police barricades. Not only that, but streets around the courthouse, those have been closed. Fred, this goes beyond just the building, but also the most visible front person about this investigation into trump, and that is da fani willis. She has received additional Security Protection near her home. Thats according to a source with direct knowledge of Law Enforcement movements here in atlanta. Willis has urged officials to stay vigilant about any security threats. In an email willis shared sexist and racist messages she had received and also similar voicemails. The man behind assuring security here at that time courthouse that, is the sheriff of Fulton County, patrick labont. He says his team is prepared. And. We understand that the microscope and everyone is watching atlanta, but it also gave us an opportunity to go to d. C. , gave us the opportunity to partner with new york and partner with miami and understand collectively what something of this magnitude involves. Our goal is to stay focused. Ive said this before, were ready. Trump has been attacking willis during Campaign Events and also on truth social. Willis has previously said this has increased the security concerns, theyve escalated due to trumps rhetoric. Weve seen that here locally in atlanta with the Trump Campaign running an advertisement that included a baseless allegation that willis hid a relationship with a gang member that she was prosecuting. According to a group that tracks these political ads, the Trump Campaign spent nearly 80,000 running that ad up until today. Willis has called that ad derogatory and false. Isabelle row sal res, zachary cohen. Lets talk more with lisa rand. Renato maieriotti is a former federal prosecutor. Good to see both of you. Perhaps it was established early on after the georgia president ial votes were called for biden that top gop leadership in georgia was not going to bend the rules or break laws for trump. And then this weekend, a former lieutenant governor, all the way to the Chief Operating Officer in the Georgia Secretary Of State office, they are ready they say to appear before the fulton grand jury. My lawyers have said i cant talk about this too much one way or the other. If im call, i will tell the truth, answer honestly. I have no expectations as to the questions. I will certainly answer the questions put in front of me. I dont want to go deeper than that to jeopardize or compromise the investigation. For me this is a story thats important for republicans to hear, americans to hear. Lets hear the whole trul p truth and nothing but the truth about Donald Trumps actions and the surrounding cast of characters around him. Lisa, why does it seem so many top gop leaders profess fearlessly that they will not defend the former president who remains hugely popular among georgia voters . Fredicka, as you know, were in the 11th hour of this earthshattering indictment that is pending here in georgia. As far as those Text Messages are concerned, i immediately reached out to clint rucker, a former Fulton County executive d. A. This morning. I asked him how important this latest development is in the grand scheme of things, being that this indictment is pending. He frankly said that this potentially, fredicka, could be a smoking gun. The reason is pretty elementary, as your reporter zach said. He said now you have something in writing that allows prosecutors to make a direct link to those in the trump inner circle regarding the interference of election results. He says those Text Messages can be received as a confession. Thats pretty powerful. You have all these messages floating around here in georgia and all across the nation, around in the public domain. Now for the first time you have something really solid in writing. In his words, clint rucker who has worked for fulton d. A. For 25plus years, he says this is big. How big, he says its going to take a lot of time to sort through this information this week, especially since theres so much fraud being alleged in this case and so while many are anticipating a grand jury decision this week, rucker predicts it may not come down until the following week. Theres a lot to sort through here. All eyes are on georgia, as you know. Yeah, big time. So renato, with these prosecutors reportedly linking texts and emails to trumps legal team, in your view is this really big . What will it take to link trumps possible involvement, his influence or even direction . Well, regardless of whether or not trump is on those Text Messages, the fact of the matter remains that this is part of this overall scheme that which can expect willis and her team to charge. I really think the typical juror, no matter who they are, are going to have trouble understanding what could possibly be legal about trying to cpromise their Voting Systems. Thats whats so powerful about this evidence, if this reported evidence is accurate, if it turns up in this indictment. Its very, very hard for the trump team and the other defendants, for example, to explain that away. I think regardless of whether or not trump is on the Text Messages themselves, in my experience and ive tried a lot of cases, criminal cases ultimately at the end of the day, what the jury is really trying to figure out is, is there something fishy going on here . Did someone do something wrong, and then is this guy in on it . With donald trump theres already a lot of smoke. This could be potentially some of the fire. Right. And to try to determine whether hes in on it, he would be the ultimate benefactor, so that, too, is part of the calculus in determining involvement, whether it be direct or indirect. I also wonder, renato, with upwards of 12 coconspirators possibly facing indictment along with trump, are prosecutors positioning themselves to cut some sort of plea deals in order to get more evidence against the big fish . No question. You can see by willis approach, her team, what shes done is she has carefully tried to flip a majority of the fake electors. Shes already got some cooperators in her pocket giving them immunity, understanding theyre the small fish here. But, of course, indicting more people creates more potential cooperatives for the government. Its easy for donald trump to sit back and say, im going to raise money off this and maybe it helps him in the polls. For some random republican operative who is a defendant, its a very different story. This is their lives, this is their life at stake. Theyve got to figure out how to high lawyers. Theyre not cheap, ill tell you from firsthand experience. Its a very, very challenging prospect for most people to go through a criminal felony indictment. I do think thats very much a possibility Going Forward. Lisa, georgia is a state with very open, some would say lax, laws about cameras in the courtroom. Do you think we could see his Court Proceedings play out on Live Television . We all know donald trump, and his attorneys would probably fight adamantly against that. This is precedent setting. We will have to wait and see. I guarantee you there would be a huge fight on the trump side against that. And then, renato, if trump is charged in georgia, it would be his fourth indictment, and i wonder what kind of coordination there might be. Because if you look at the calendar of events involving all the other legal cases, expectations of trial, et cetera. Is there some calculus as to which case would have the more favorable leverage over picking dates . Its very interesting. Technically speaking, the prosecutors are all doing their own thing. Obvisly theres four different judges who are going to be involved. Theyre going to have their own views, their own calenders. The defense is going to have their own agenda, what tyre going to want to push first. Im assuming theyll want to delay all four. I think ts prosecutors are going to have trump cant be in four different courtrooms at the same time. Hes going to need time to prepare. So that is going to be part of the conversation. Its going to be very interesting to see. It looks like jack smith really wants to have this january 6th trial first. It will be interesting, and i imagine the defense will have other ideas. Go ahead, lisa. We need to note, all of this going on while hes running for president. Thats right. Thanks to both of you. And before we go, congratulations to you, lisa rayam, for receiving an Atlanta Press club award in excellence in radio reporting. Fred, thank you so much. Im very honored. Appreciate nah. Hawaiis governor says the losses are nearing 6 billion with more than 2,000 structures damaged or destroyed. Senator mazie hirono tells cnn the entire town of lahina burned to the ground. We are really focused, as far as im concerned, on the need for rescue well, the location of we know, sadly, more bodies. As i talk with the people, this large place where the residents were, yes, were going to need to provide a lot of support. Thats why im asking for and i expect to receive bipartisan support for additional funds that will enable us to recover. Now, the states Emergency Response is under review as their robust siren system, the largest in the world, was not activated during the fires. Cnns mike valerio joining me now live from maui. Mike, what are you hearing and seeing there today . Reporter fredicka, first of all, good morning. Whenever youve experienced this for decades, we experienced it a couple of moments ago. When youre here on the edge of disaster zones, there are people that exude their generosity of spirit, on their missions, going to check on loved ones, their homes, seeing whats left. To give you a lay of land before we introduce you to our new friend susan. Fred, this is the only way to get into lahina, into the disaster zone. Were about 1,000 feet over the Pacific Ocean. Its an orderly process. Cars are stopping every now and then. People are coming up to us and want to tell us their stories. A couple seconds ago i talked to a woman named susan. I said, susan, were broadcasting to europe, africa, the mainland of the United States. Tell everybody watching why this isnt just a postcard, but your home and why we all need to care about what is unfolding this slowmotion disaster. Listen to what she told us its about 40 seconds. Listen up. When i drove through on friday, i had no clue what i was going through. Everything is gone. I worked at the chart house since 1991. Its flat to the ground. There are houses in lahina, i didnt even nowhere they were. People were going back to get their animals that died. I heard there was a Snorkeling Boat looking at the town. Give them respect. Its so bad. People died here. Its not just a vacation not just a place for vacation. We live here. Reporter so, fred, we play that as we gaze over the Pacific Ocean just to show you the dramatic juxtaposition of what were dealing with here. This is one of the most Beautiful Spots on the planet. Again, about 1,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean. How people are getting to check on their loved ones, to check what is left, in the middle of this lush jungle. Well push in here to show you the huge contrast from the backup we saw yesterday when people were figuring out how to begin the next chapter of their lives here in maui. Again, going back to what we just heard, when people are on their missions to try to deliver supplies, to try to figure out how to go on, every now and then you just hear the realization that things will never be the same. What were looking at right here, this is one of the officers weve become friends with over the past hour, shes just making sure these are lahaina residents, not people who are trying to unfortunately a lot, take advantage of the situation. Fred, were going to be here for the rest of the afternoon i should say its still morning here. Check on people, i think that is what people need to understand who are so far away from where we are right now, this is just beginning, fred. You can see it in susans face. You could hear it in her voice. Its painstaking. Its heartbreaking. Its torturous. It really is. Mike valerio, thank you very much. Well talk further about this whole experience for hawaiians there and the impact its making, how the people of hawaii are processing this horrific tragedy. Unimaginable catastrophe. Naka nathaniel is joining me live from honolulu. Hes an Opinion Writer for honolulus civil beat. Im so glad you can be with us, sadly after these horrible circumstances. Sadly, in susans voice, if you werent able to see her face on a monitor there, i imagine you can relate and all your fellow hawaiians can relate to the devastation of experiencing this and then contrast that with people who are only seeing hawaii as a beautiful destination, a vacation location. This is residents, and this hits hard. Tell me what youre thinking and feeling. Reporter theres an unbelievable sadness as people have said. Its been soul crushing to see the news as its developed over this week in hawaii. To be perfectly honest, the anger is starting to bubble up as we keep on hearing more and more reports about the absolute failures with leadership. Its also this has been a generational problem thats been developing. Before i ask you about that generational problem, take me back to i recently understand you were on a kayak on thursday amongst friends. You were not far from maui. I dont know if that was your destination or if you were Conducting Business of another sort. Tell me what you were doing, what you experienced, what happened. Actually, it was the kauai high canoe club. We had been practicing to make a Channel Crossing at the beginning of next month. Yesterday we had been fundraising and practicing. Yesterday we decided its not appropriate for us to do this. This is an ancient crossing that we wanted to honor our an ancestors by doing this crossing, but instead weve taken the proceeds and dedicated them to relief efforts. So many people, so many friends have done just what susan said. Theyve seen the places where theyve worked burned to the ground, places theyve lived burned to the ground. We have such tenuous contact with people in hawaii. I was talking with someone, her brother works for the fire department. She had president heard. She got one quick text message from him saying, hey, im okay. Thats all the bandwidth that they have to get messages out. Theres so much worry. I havent heard from somebody in 36 hours. The ability to Contact People if you dont know, you worry. This is a colossal, colossal loss for individuals culturally, for hawaiians and all that lahaina represents. You said something at the top of the interview about generational loss. This is a microcosm of that. You said over time there has been generational loss. Talk to me about that. So whats happened here, unfortunately and you go back and hear the old stories about people who used to live in maui. Theres an island just off the coast of maui that was used at first for sheep farming, and then the military used it and devastated and deforested the place. This Southern Coast of hawaii where all the other resorts are located used to be lush, used to be a beautiful, beautiful wet lapd, kind of like the tropical paradise that so many people imagine. Instead, whats happened is because of the deforestation thats happened there, the morning clouds that gather and provide rain for that area are no longer there. So its become dry. And dry is great if you want to plan your hawaiian vacation. Who wants to spend their time indoors, getting soaked like we normally do . Thats one of the things thats happened here, this perception of what makes hawaii so beautiful, is the stuff that has also made put hawaii in such a precarious place. I also read that you are making an appeal on another level. You wrote an Opinion Article for the l. A. Times, and your plea is directed at californians. What would you like them to do . So, i love californians. Theyre wonderful cousins. California is our sister state. So much of what has happened here in hawaii, the overdevelopment, heavy tourism, we are small, we are remote. Like i said, we love our california cousins. Were full of aloha for them. But the economy that theyve brought over here, the level of opportunism really has damaged our state. Whats happened here is Native Hawaiians are no longer there are more Native Hawaiians now living outside of hawaii than live in hawaii. I just covered the council on native hawaiian advancements annual Convention Held in las vegas this year. There are more people in the continental United States and quickly, why is that . Economics . Yeah, so its economics. Native hawaiians, especially, can no longer live here. My fathers generation had to leave because they could not keep up with the cost of living. The generation right after his also left because they could not keep up with the cost of living. People in my generation are barely hanging on. We cant even talk about what comes next, because most of the next generation are now living in the continental United States. Hence the generational loss that youre speaking of, and now a continued erosion of that, sadly. Naka nathaniel, thank you so much for being with us. We wish you, your neighbors, friends, loved ones there in all of hawaii, particularly lahaina, the very best. Aloha, fredicka. Appreciate it. Her 12yearold brother was also among the dead. Over in kups ansing at least 36 people have been evacuated as shelling intensifies. Cnns nick peyton ballis in dnipro. What more can you tell us about this attack in kherson . Kherson in the south of ukraine has been the regular target of Russian Artillery hiing Civilian Areas quite regularly. It was liberated in november of last year. Theres been the occasional Military Buildup around that area and possibly russian responses to their losses in the southern part of ukraine. This particularly ghastly incident involves, as you say, a 23dayold baby girl called sophia, her 12yearold brother were killed alongside their mother and father when shelling hit their home. As you say, four of the seven people who died in that one incident. I should point out children now repeatedly the people were talking about in terms of ukrainian civilian lives being lost. Startling that someone so young could be killed by something so indiscriminate as ar till rye fire. You also mentioned kupiansk, closer to the russian border, there over the past days weve seen a mandatory Evacuation Order for children because of the intensity of russian shell fire, again, against that particular city, liberated like kherson was as long, still repeatedly hit at one point in one day by over 500 shells, say ukrainian officials. At the same time, yes, russia itself suggesting their regions are being attacked by Unmanned Artillery vehicles fired by ukraine, but also intercepted, too. Theyve also just yesterday were dealing with what they say was a foiled Ukrainian Missile attack on the kerch bridge that links the russian main land to the occupied Crimea Peninsula that legally is part of ukraine. So russias losses here are very much about drones or missiles being intercepted. Ukraines losses about children, some as young as just over 3 weeks old, being killed by indiscriminate Russian Artillery fire. Absolutely horrible. Nick paton walsh, thank you so much, in ukraine. Former President Donald Trump is trolling Florida Governor ron desantis. Yesterday, the former president was met with cheers at the Iowa State Fair with an entourage of congressmen from florida who have endorsed trump over their own governor desantis. This comes on the weeks of several bad weeks for desantis of campaign shakeups, low fundraising estimates and sinking poll numbers. Cnns Steve Contorno joining me now with more on this. Trump was only at the fair for a short time. Desantis was there for hours working the crowd. Did it give him a boost, desantis that is, with iowa voters. Reporter his team walked away this weekend encouraged with his performance in a very important state. Everything you mentioned is accurate about the problems his campaign has had over the past month. But they are very encouraged by what they saw this weekend. They still think theres plenty of time between now and january when these caulk goers will start organizing for who theyre going to support in iowa. Yes, there have been troubles. There was a lot o take away from this weekend. He pressed a lot of flesh. Very visible with his young family. Thats a dynamic hell continue to play up, the generational argument between him and the former president. He had an opportunity to spend some time with the states very popular republican governor. Hes going to be spending a lot of time in iowa trying to convince these iowa caucusgoers to get behind him. As you mentioned, donald trump reminded a lot of people why he remains the frontrunner in this race. He had a very large crowd there to see him speak. Yes, he only spent a little bit of time in iowa for this event. But when he was there, he was very well received, his campaign was Bracketing Desantis events so when desantis was speaking he was often being heckled. There was a plane with a banner flying overhead saying be likable ron. If hes going to win, he has to make a lot of appearances in these early nominating states. They are building a Grassroots Operation that support him through the summer and the fall and into when people are actually voting. Trump in the meantime, when his calendar is not clogged up with all his legal challenges, youre going to see him swooping into these states from time to time, reminding voters lie they still like him, why he remains so dynamic and such a powerful figure in the gop. As much a there was a lot for both sides to take away from. Im sure theyll get a good start, this is good to build Going Forward into the debates in the fall. The owner tells us the Marion CountyPolice Department raided both his home and his Publications Office last week. He added that police also seized computers, cell phones, also other materials as part of this investigation, suggesting that that was partly triggered by a story that he published last week. And in it it mentioned carrie newell, the owner of a local coffee shop, explaining he received a tip about newell, allegedly driving without a valid drivers license.
