We begin this hour with a new salvo in the war on ukraine, Ukrainian Forces carrying out an attack in the dead of the night on one of russias biggest oil tankers in the black sea. A sea drone with almost 1,000 pounds of explosives hit the ship. Video shows the moments leading up to the attack. Russia says the tanker was not carrying out, but ukrainian says say it was. The attack came after russian sea drones targeted a coastal naval base striking a warship. Nick paton walsh looks at the escalation in the black sea. Reporter we are beginning to see perhaps a new ukrainian tactic. The black seas Shipping Lanes now repeatedly under attack by ukrainian drones. Ukraine is being fairly public about its responsibility for the attacks. It appears that a russian oil tanker, which ukrainian Officials Say was carrying fuel for the military campaign, that again hit by a ukrainian drone. Also, according to officials, carrying just shy of half a metric ton of explosives. This oil tanker carrying 5,000 tons of oil is significantly ablaze. The 11 crew have escaped unharmed. Russian officials are still suggesting the attack was unsuccessful. At the same time, one russian official suggesting there were sounds of explosions around the bridge. I think there is an increasing sense of that area so vital to russian interests being increasingly under ukrainian attack. Ukraine itself is now quite capable of projecting power, it seems. Those drones get towards things that the Russian Naval military presumably imagined were relatively invulnerable. Certainly a shock for the kremlin to start seeing these incidents with this kind of frequency. Lets get more analysis. With me now is ray maybus, the former secretary of navy under president obama. So good to see you. Looking at these attacks, were you surprised ukraine was able to successfully hit ships with these water drones . Not surprised they were able to hit them, but one of the things that is a little surprising is how far away they were. I mean, the estimates are that these Uncrewed Sea Drones had to go about 450 miles or more. What it says to the russians is theres no place safe. Doesnt matter how far away you are, it doesnt matter how protected you are, if you are a russian ship, either an oil tanker or a military ship, we can find you, we can hit you. How crippling if it was carrying fuel for the Russian Military . Well, its crippling. Its not a game changer, that one ship. But if they become cautious, if they cant guarantee that those ships are going to be safe, then it could have a really big bearing, because theyre bringing a lot of supplies by sea to their troops that are fighting the ukrainians. Russia also ended the grain deal and is trying to enforce it on the black sea. Is there pressure from ukraine that could cause russia to back down . Theres been International Pressure on russia on all sorts of things, and they dont seem to be very susceptible to that. What this does is it changes the military calculus. Its not just russia in its illegal attack on ukraine. After the grain deal, attacking ukrainian ports, destroying grain meant for the rest of the world, this says to the russians and to the russian people and to the Russian Military and the russian leadership, we can find you, we can hit you. These things are very hard to detect. They ride low in the water. Theyre fast. Obviously theyve got a very long range. Its sort of ironic that the russian navy is losing to a country that basically doesnt have a navy in the traditional sense. Very elusive. Earlier in the week one of our reporters did a report on the use of these drones. Now we see how effective, at least in this case, it has been. There are a few other events this week that i also want to ask you about. The u. S. Now is considering putting troops on commercial vessels in some waterways in the middle east to help ward off seizures from iran. Are you on board with that kind of plan . Well, i dont see this as much of an escalation. Weve had warships there for year years. Weve escorted ships. Weve answered Distress Calls very recently from commercial ships. We and the british launched a helicopter. We sent one of our destroyers. Were now sending an Amphibious Ready Group with three ships full of marines and equipment into the area. So putting marines on Merchant Ships doesnt seem like it raises the risk much. It does raise the probability that ships get through without getting seized, but these marines are highly trained, and they dont go on these ships unless the owner of the ship requests it. If you can do something to deter these seizures and to make clear to the iranians that we can do more than one thing. Yes, we are concerned about ukraine. Yes, we are concerned about the rise of china. But were not taking our eye off the straits of hormuz either. Now these alarming allegations, two u. S. Navy sailors have been arrested for allegedly sending information to chinese intelligence officers, pictures of ships, Sharing Plans for military exercises. If true, how much damage might have been done . If true, hard to know how much damage, but its not good. If they had accessed Classified Information and its things like capabilities of your ships. Now, obviously we know that the likelihood of a near term resolution is quite low now, but this could incentivize putin to drag on the war through november of next year. Just a day after former President Trump pleaded not guilty to charges he conspired to overturn the 2020 election, special counsel jack smith is seeking a new protective order against him in that case through a court filing last night. Smith flagged this online post from trump as part of the reasoning he is seeking to keep Defense Lawyers from Sharing Evidence deemed sensitive with trump. Trumps post says, if you go after me, im coming after you. Smiths filing said trump could release evidence to the public that would hurt the case. A trump spokesperson said the comment was the definition of political speech and is not related to the case. February of 1996 on fire island in new york there was found extremities of a human being, feet and legs. No identity at all, but then 15 years later a skull was found. They were able in 2011 to look at the dna and determine it was from the same person. Go from 2011 to 2022. That is when the task force basically was born to look into these unsolved homicides in long island. Listen to the elected District Attorney of suffolk county. In August Of 2022 approximately six months after we formed this task force, a dna profile was developed from the remains of karen vergata. In September Of 2022 the fbi was able via a genetic review to identify her presumptively as fire island jane doe. In october of 2022, using a swab from a relative, we were able to definitively identify her. Reporter the District Attorney does not imply case Rex Heuermann at all with this identification of this brand new victim. They will work this case just like they did with the gilgo four. With the charges Rex Heuermann is facing, the victims were found tied with belts, duct tape, rolled in burlap. Karen and several other victims in the area were dismembered and parts of their bodies were found in various locations. A historic fda approval makes major strides for new mothers. The Agency Signed off on the firstever Postpartum Depression Pill in the u. S. That is specifically made for this condition. Reporter what we know about the Depression Drug is that it is administered as an oral pill taken daily over the course of two weeks. Patients in Clinical Trials have said that it worked very quickly for them, within just a few days, and those effects were sustained for weeks. One Clinical Trial included 196 women with severe Postpartum Depression. Half were given the drug, the other half were given a placebo. 57 said they experienced huge improvements of 50 or more in their symptoms over the course of two weeks, compared with only 39 of those who took a placebo. Some of the women even said they started to experience those symptoms improve as early as within three days of taking the medication. Now, some women taking the drug experienced side effects like drowsiness and dizziness, but the drug was overall found to be safe and effective. As many as 1 in 5 women may have it at some time in their lives, but its met with a lot of shame and stigma, which is something i experienced myself after i gave birth to my son. I had Postpartum Depression. Even though im a physician, at that time i was overseeing a program to help women in postpartum families. I still waited months before seeking therapy. Its really important theres now a pill thats specifically am approved to treat it. This is two weeks in duration. I think it is one more reminder that we have to take Mental Health as seriously as we take physical health. I hope this encourages many more women to seek help. Help may not always involve medications. It may not be appropriate for women with mild Postpartum Depression. But there are many things that can help such as therapy. You were helping so many other women, but that is part of the problem. So many people dont know what theyre experiencing. Postpartum depression as described on the fda website is a major depressive episode. Thats how they are describing it. So how common is it for women after theyve given birth . Its quite common. The estimates range from 1 in 8 women to as high as 1 in 5 women. Some studies also show that 50 or more women that have Postpartum Depression dont know that they do. Just minutes ago New York City mayor eric Adams Holding a News Conference calling the murder of a 28yearold professional dancer at a Brooklyn Gas Station last weekend a hate crime. Oshae sibley was stabbed in the torso after a confrontation with a group of males who, according to one of sibleys friends, were shouting gay slurs. Here is mayor adams. Parents lost a child to something clearly that was a hate crime. Our message today to both the Muslim Community and the Lgbtq Plus Community as well as all others, this is a city where you are free to express yourself. That expression should never end with any form of violence. On friday, people gathered outside the very same gas station where sibley was stabbed. Cnns Jason Carroll has more. Reporter they gathered here at this gas station in brooklyn to memorialize and to take a stand against hate. We stand here today, tomorrow and well continue to until black, queer, trans, nonbinary lives are not up for debate. Reporter this is where sibley, a 28yearold professional dancer, was stabbed to death. Police say the trouble started when a group of young men shouted antigay slurs at sibley and his friends because they were dancing, voguing to a beyonce song. One witness described what he saw. The guy came from inside the store. He left and he saw them down here and he was like, why are you dancing . He was like, im muslim, stop dancing. Thats where the fight started. Reporter Surveillance Video showed at one point sibley appeared to walk away. The situation escalated. Police say one of the men Stabbed Sibley in the chest. Oshae sibley reporter his death has sparked outrage across social media. Beyonce paid tribute and posted rest in power oshae sibley on her website. Shahid has been friends and colleagues with sibley for more than a decade. Someone with hatred took his life. My heart broke and its still breaking. Reporter sibley was a member of ta modern dance company. He performed at Lincoln Center and got his start dancing as a teenager in philadelphia. He stayed in touch with his Dance Instructor who he called aunt joan. I couldnt believe it happened. Being Black In America is being Black In America, but this was for other reasons, you know, his sexuality. The fact that he was just pumping gas and dancing. Reporter sibleys death has drawn attention to the number of hate crimes directed at gay and trans people, especially those of color. There was a 78 rise in hate crimes against lgbtq people in the u.
