We begin with the escalating attacks and counterattacks in russias war against ukraine. Kremlin forces attempting to hit president Volodymyr Zelenskyy Close To Home as ukraine ramps up strikes inside russian territory. Cnns Nick Paton Walsh is on the ground in ukraine. Crews have been digging through the rubble after the deadly attacks on president zelenskyys hometown. Reporter yeah, and the target blatantly civilian, a technical college, most severely an Apartment Block where we appear to have lost six lives so far, including a 10yearold girl and a startling number of injured. Over 70, as you say. Rescue crews continuing to look through the rubble. In the last few hours hearing the town of kherson has also been hit, talking about four dead and 20 injured. The civilian toll a repeated sign of russias frustration, savagery in the face of what appears to be its slow losses on the Southern Front line. Here is what we saw there today. The fight so fierce and victory so bitter, theres little left to defend it from. No cover for troops, no structures. Just the dust of a tiny fourroad village, the first gains of ukraines Full Throttle counteroffensive. So small but symbolic, russia claimed monday with Constant Shelling it pushed ukraine out of it again. Something these men fresh back from that fight would scoff at. Kryvyi rih fought all ten days of the assault until the russians finally fled. Here it is in the initial advance. When you assault under enemy shelling, he says, you have nowhere to hide. Thats the hardest part. Theyve since tried to assault again twice with small groups. He fought for here, too, the town before it, where the russians hid 200 troops in the basements, not even leaving for a toilet, so ukraine attacked with a smaller force. This is where the russians made their final stand, The School Hall and its corridors. There is no love, says the war. Thats seem to relish nothing they brought and left no clues as to why they fought. One of the hard things for the ukrainians to understand is quite why the russians are fighting so hard for here and down the road. Is it that these are their last lines of defense . No. They think theres far more fighting to be done. I hope when we get through the last line of defense, he says, then they start to run. For now they still feel there is something behind them. Yeah, we feel support, but we are very, very tired. There is so much more ahead to come. Ukraine may have put in its reserves now to the fight, but they face the same russian brutality. Their tactics havent changed, he says, they put the storm zs are in front. They stand until the death. I dont understand their motivation or what theyre fighting for. Cnns Nic Robertson is following all these developments for us. Nic, ukraine is repeatedly striking targets inside moscow. Zelenskyy has said the war is, quote, returning to russia. Whats behind the new strategy . Reporter perhaps its an effort by the ukrainians to puncture the propaganda of President Putin who accounts to say, look, the war in ukraine is going our way. He calls it a special military operation. Everything is on track, were doing it all right even when his own National Security number two in the National Security, medvedev, former prime minister, former president is saying, well, if ukraine does make advances with its counteroffensive as nick was reporting, russia will have to use its nuclear weapon. On the one hand, the russian narrative is were doing well. On the other hand, maybe were not and well have to up our attacks to nuclear attacks. Theres no evidence, by the way, thats actually happening. On the ground in moscow, most people there, all they get is the putin propaganda. They think the war is going well. Here ukraine is able to show them something else. Last weekend there were also strikes in moscow. A couple weeks out there were more strikes in moscow as well. Were also seeing in other places, over the border in russia vital Military Hubs where ukraine is also increasing its number of Drone Attacks there. Russias Defense Minister has said they will respond, that they will double down. The kremlin is saying this is all sort of a desperate act by ukraine to strike into moscow. It very clearly tries to puncture putins propaganda. Can it let all the air out . No, because the russians still control the narrative, but it does get the message to russians that there is a cost for this war. Potentially the ukrainians are going to put that price up. John, thanks very much for joining us. How concerned are you right now about this escalation in attacks from russia including in zelenskyys hometown . This is very much of a piece of mr. Putins desperate efforts to really terrorize the ukrainian people, to bring the war home to them. Hes not making the pretense of going after military targets. This has been going on for months. We see this as more steps to break the back, the will of the ukrainian people. You would have thought by now he would have long ago learned thats just not going to happen. Whats the u. S. Position of ukraine launching these attacks right in Downtown Moscow . Again, weve seen this in the past before. I want to make it clear were neither encouraging or enabling these attacks. Weve had conversations with the ukrainians about our concerns about attacks inside russia. Can speak to their targeting whats the u. S. Position . Our position is we want to focus on the war inside ukraine. We want to make sure they have everything they need for the counteroffensive that nic was just reporting on. Is ukraine accepting what theyre doing . Its not about accepting, wolf. They have to make decisions about what theyre going to target and where theyre going to put their military capabilities. We are not encouraging attacks inside russia. Were certainly not en a abling attacks inside russia. We really want to focus whats going on in ukrainian territory, but the ukrainians should be the ones to speak to whatever targeting theyre doing. You heard Nick Paton Walshs report. Whats the u. S. s assessment in how the ukrainian counteroffensive . I think he did summarize it well, even though hes in one area, theyre moving slowly, not as far or as fast as they would like to. I think its important to remember that when theyre running into these defensive lines, wolf, theyre sometimes three deep and protected by minefields. Its hard enough to go through a terrestrial minefield just on its own. When youre being shot at and shelled which they are every day, its painstaking work. They are making progress, and well keep making sure they have all the materials they need. That is based on one thing and one thing only and that was operational readiness. He took the inputs of many leaders across the Department Of Defense when it came down to it, he believes its in the best National Security interest of the company if we leave Space Command in colorado because moving it, especially a move that would take place over the next five to ten years at a critical time in the space domain when the prc is developing incredible capabilities in that regard, that moving it could have a negative effect on Space Commands readiness and the president finds that unacceptable. Tell us more about this hearing today. Carlos de oliveira was released on 100,000 bond. This was his first appearance in court. The judge has scheduled another hearing, wolf, where they hell be formally arraigned, in part because he doesnt have a florida attorney, an attorney who is barred in the state of florida to handle that arraignment. That will be scheduled for june 10th. Hes facing four charges, one is false statements. A couple had to do with altering documents and, of course, obstruction. We know, wolf, he is a key part of this case, in part because dls this one section in this Superseding Indictment where prosecutors describe him as having a conven with a trump employee identified as trumploy four, identified as yuscii taveras. They say de oliveira insisted on getting this Surveillance Video video deleted. He said what are we going to do about it . The issue with tavaeras is he formed a key part of this Superseding Indictment. We know he was sent a Target Letter by prosecutors after the first indictment of the former president , and we know, wolf, he provided information that was used in this description of these allegations against de oliveira and against the former president. So the question is was he is he cooperating. We dont know if we could call him a cooperator. We do know he spoke to the fbi, to prosecutors after that initial indictment. In georgia a judge rejected trumps latest bid to halt the investigation of 2020 president ial Election Interference in that state. Cnns sara murray is joining us from atlanta. Sara, the Georgia Investigation is moving for washed tonward forward tonight. Trumps team got a smackdown from a judge in Fulton County who said he wasnt going to disqualify fani willis from overseeing the case and not going to throw out months and months she collected. This comes as willis is on the precipice of announcing whether anyone in this case, donald trump or any of his allies, are going to face charges. We still think thats probably a week or two away rather than a day or two away. She made very clear in an interview with our affiliate wxia over the weekend that they already have Security Concerns at the top of mind. As far as she sees it, her investigation is ready to go. Take a listen. Some people may not be happy with the decisions im making. Sometimes when people are unhappy, they act in a way that could create harm. Weve been working for 2 1 2 years. Were ready to go. They are worried about potential Security Issues here in Downtown Atlanta when willis does make her charging announcements. Weve seen barricades going up. We know willis instructed much of her staff to work from home. Over the weekend she also shared a pretty vial, racist and sexualized threat she had received with her partners here in Fulton County, basically as a warning shot of the kinds of stuff shes been getting over the last 2 1 2 years of this trump administration. Were waiting to see how Carlos De Oliveira will eventually plead. If you were his defense attorney, what would you advise him . Hes certainly going to plead not guilty because this early in the case, thats always whats going to happen. I would have been advising him a long time ago he should be looking out for his own interests and, therefore, he should be truthful and answer questions rather than taking this tactic of ending up being charged. Maybe he feels hes being loyal. Thats understandable, a good Defense Counsel would say to him, this is the time youve got to think about yourself. Its clear, norm, the Fulton County District Attorney fani willis is moving rapidly towards a final charging decision. What do you think those charges could be . Wolf, i think the charges will come in three categories. You have the fake electoral certificates. Georgia was one of the worst alleged examples of that. Thats like counterfeit money, wolf. You cant have electors say im the elector of the genuinely elected president , donald trump. No. Second, the Pressure Campaign against state officials. In particular, brad raffensperger, january 2nd, 2021 trump said to him, just find 11,780 votes. So fake certificates, fake votes. Number three, a very intense focus on Computer Hacking in coffee county, georgia. Thats to derive information for fake conspiracy theories. Each of those has a very strong corollary under georgia law including Georgia State rico which allows racketeering conspiracies, alleged, of the kind we find here. When do you anticipate the charges will be made . For sure before the end of august. Shes declared a work period, when she wants people to stay at home. We saw the images of the barriers that were up there. Good practice starting early with your security precautions. I think in the next few weeks, well see those charges and well be on indictment watch yet again. The District Attorney, she says theyre ready to go. Well see when that unfolds. Kristen, trump and his team clearly are burning up a lot of cash with all these various legal problems theyve had, not just trump but his codefendants as well. What are you hearing from your sources . They are hemorrhaging money. You have the Save America Pac which has been paying the legal bills. We expect them to file today that theyve spent 40 million just in the first half of this year. Just to give you a little context, they only spent 16 million total in 2022. Again, this is not just the money going to Donald Trumps legal bills, but all these associates in these various investigations, former and current aides, staffers, members of the white house team. Theres a big umbrella of people getting their legal fees paid for. We talked about the maralago case, the two codefendants. Both of the lawyers in that case have people who have gotten a large amount of money from the Save America Pac. Again, 40 million. They gave 60 million to the super pac when trump announced he was running for president. They actually asked for that money back. Thats how much money theyre hemorrhaging because of these legal bills. Evan, youre following whats going on in washington. The federal grand jury scheduled to meet tomorrow and thursday. The Special Counsel could move at any time with additional charges involving the Election Interference. Thats right, wolf. I think everybody eyes will be glued to the grand jury tomorrow, depending on when they arrive to see whether we might have an indictment as soon as tomorrow. We certainly believe that everyone at the Justice Department is aware of the schedule. We have the first Republican Debate in the next three weeks or so, and so time is of the essence for the Justice Department if they want to get out of the way of the political calendar which is, to be fair i think theyre already in it, and the former president keeps making certainly an issue of that. Hes bringing it up at rallies now increasingly. So i think certainly this week seems like a very ripe time for that to happen. Keep in mind we know there are still additional witnesses who might be scheduled including bernie kerik and others. Nothing indicates that theyre key to an indictment against the former president. Its possible they are important for maybe other figures, people who are also involved in the broader effort of the former president s effort to stay in office. For the former president himself, its not let me get norm to weigh in. How much legal peril is trump facing right now . Wolf, i cant think of a political figure in the entire history of the United States of america including Richard Nixon who has faced as many simultaneous criminal cases that have been filed and that are threatened. Remember, we have alvin bragg who has prosecuted him in new york for alleged 2016 Election Interference for covering up hush money payments. Alvin bragg had a big win in Federal Court the other week to carry his case forward. No one even noticed because theres so much additional peril, and all these other cases as well. Despite his growing legal peril, donald trump is dominating the rest of the republican president ial field earning more than triple the support of his closest rival, Florida Governor ron desantis. I think you would say under normal circumstances, its understandable because weve never been in a situation where you have somebody who is running for president who has already been indicted and is facing more legal indictments. So thats kind of the wildcard there because otherwise, who could beat someone with a 37point lead. He may still very well be unbeatable because ron desantis, the number two, isnt exactly doing a bangup job out there. I think obviously youd have to say hes a huge favorite. But the unknowns still remain the unknowns. I think thats right. I think donald trump was smart to attack ron desantis as early and as often as he did. He basically kneecaped him just as he was getting ready to take off and run for president. It turns out he never really has taken off. Maybe he can. His campaign has been talking about this pivot, running as an insurgent as an underdog. Hes certainly an underdog. One of the things that was copying up, obviously, is the debate on august 23rd. Well see how he does there. It doesnt look like the former president is going to be on stage. Why would he be . Hes up by almost 40 points against these opponents. He cant help himself. For the attention. He wants to be on that stage. The other thing, and i dont know if you were surprised by this, the other candidates, three Percentage Points in this poll. Ron desantis is at like 17 or something, but the others are so low in the polls, it seems difficult for anybody to shake out of this race. Its interesting, nia, were beginning to hear some of the other republican candidates go after mr. Trump more directly than in the past. A little. Lets listen to this. By the time we get on the debate stage on august 23rd, the frontrunner will be out on bail in four different jurisdictions. If these accusations are true, its incredibly dangerous to our National Security. When he hits me with the juvenile insults, i think that helps me. I dont think voters like that. Its just a reminder why theres so many millions of voters who wont vote for him going forward. Donald trump isnt running for president to make America Great again. Donald trump is running to stay out of prison. Yeah. Listen, none of these arguments so far are helping these candidates. As gloria said earlier, its just a little bit that theyre trying to go after donald trump, say hes not electable. You look at this poll. They think he is electable. One of the reasons they think donald trump is electable against joe biden is because they think donald trump already beat joe biden. They have completely bought into the big lie. In so many ways donald trump is running almost like an incumbent president. Hes still got the loyalty of the republican party. Here is a couple of things that caught me from this poll. The people who are the most loyal maga category, theyre 37 of the republican electorate. Theyre not a majority of the republican lech dort. If you hold out hope its not going to be donald trump, that might give you some hope. Here is something that gives you no hope which is and this is an amazing fact, that in this poll there wasnt one person in the maga category, considered himself or herself a true maga person, who believed that trump had committed any serious crime whatsoever. So its not that theyre saying, oh, yeah, we can get over the fact that donald trump may have done x, y and z. They believe he did nothing wrong, and thats a much higher bar for any opponent to get over. When will hurd says he wants to keep himself out of jail, theyre not paying attention of that. I think will hurd was booed at that iowa event. Thats how well some of these arguments are going over with primary voters. They are attached to trump. He in many ways created this primary base as it exists now, and theyre sticking with him. Well see how it shakes out. Thats the key word, well see how it shakes out. A lot of shaking. Just in to cnn, police in tennessee have shot and critically wounded a man who was allegedly firing a weapon at a Jewish Day School. Cnns ryan young is following the story for us. What more are you learning about this man who allegedly tried to enter this Jewish Day School in memphis with a gun . Reporter were still working on details, but what we know is around 12 20 this man appeared at the school, the Madison Square garden len Hebrew Academy in east memphis. When he went to the door, he tried to gain entry. They had security there. He wasnt able to gain entry. He started shooting at the door. Police were called. He left the location. People at the academy were able to give an excellent description of the man and the truck he tried to get away in. Police tried to stop the man. There was a shootout. He was critically injured. No one at the school was injured. We dont believe school was open at the time, but you can understand why theres heightened security now around that cool. The fbi, the tbi and Memphis Police department all investigating the situation trying to figure out why this man was focused on this academy. Right now, wolf, the good news no one hurt. Obviously dangerous and concerning. Yeah, at a time of heightened antisemitism all across the United States, security at these jewish schools intensifying dramatically.
