The queens 95th birthday. Welcome to world news america for our viewers in the uk, on pbs, and around the globe. World leaders at the g7 summit in cornwall have begun their first face to face talks in almost two years. The uk Prime Minister borisjohnson urged the group of leading democracies to learn from the mistakes of the pandemic and to build back better to ensure a recovery that helps all of society. The Global Vaccination Campaign and Climate Change are two of the issues at the forefront of discussions among the leaders. Our Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg starts our coverage. Getting to this beautiful and remote part of the country isnt easy. Theyve come from five continents to cornwall. The winding last mile of the journey of the most powerful leaders in the world ended on the beach. Thejohnsons, the british receiving line. Coronavirus kept Prime Ministers and president s and millions of us apart, but now the Prime Minister wants them to pull together, with a huge vow for a billion vaccines, so the world can gather again. Official hellos done, time for vital talks behind closed doors. Thank you all very much for coming. It is genuinely wonderful to see everybody in person. Were Building Back better together, and Building Back greener, and Building Back fairer, and Building Back more equal and, how shall i. In a more gender neutral and perhaps a more feminine way, how about that . A reference to getting more girls into classrooms in developing countries. Make the world a better place. Thats the g7 theory, at least. The first lady and the duchess of cambridge descended on the four and five year olds of Connor Downs Academy in hayle today. Unusually, the royal family part of this weeks big political push. And Downing Street reckons theyve sailed over the first Big Hurdle Rebooting The so called Special Relationship between the United States and the uk, with a new name for a new chapter too. So, its a relationship, we call it the deep and meaningful relationship, whatever you. The indestructible relationship. Its a relationship that has endured for a very long time and has been an important part of peace and prosperity, both in europe and Around The World. And when it comes to the vaccine, youre making a huge promise about 100 million, but in the next few weeks, the uks only sending 5 million. You could already have sent vaccines to developing countries, that hasnt happened. Isnt there a danger that youre talking big, youre making big promises but, actually, then you deliver Something Else . With great respect, laura, i think that the people of this country should be very proud that of the 1. 5 billion doses that are being distributed Around The World, to the poorest and neediest in the world, one in three come from the Oxford Astrazeneca deal that the uk did. Yes, were putting in 5 million doses by september, but well do 100 million before 12 months is out. Thats a huge number of extra doses. I think people do understand that. They also understand that the uk is spending £10 billion on overseas aid. Yes, it is still a lot of money, but you are cutting it. And youre notjust cutting it, youre going back on something that was in the conservative Party Manifesto that you promised the public wed do. And i think people will understand that there is a pandemic, which could not have been foreseen at the time we made that commitment to 0. 7 throughout this parliament. Thats one of the objections from outside. There are a few small, but noisy, bands of protesters whove made it to the fringes of the summit. And trouble looms on a different front too. The uk is not at the eu table any more, but the others still huddled together. With intense tension over how brexit s affected northern ireland, plotting, perhaps, how to take on borisjohnson on that tomorrow. Thats a side bar to the main business, though. A commitment to big democracies working together. The multilateralism, the german chancellor says, thats gone missing in recent years. The final agreements on sunday may fall short of borisjohnson s ambition, but the summit itself is a symbol to show these leaders want to stand together. Laura kuenssberg reporting there. Want to stand together. Joining me now for more from cornwall is our very own christian fraser. I know how much you love analysing body language and optics, so give us yoursense body language and optics, so give us your sense of how this is really differed from some of the past or antagonistic g sevens . I differed from some of the past or antagonistic g sevens . Antagonistic g sevens . I think it was very clear antagonistic g sevens . I think it was very clear to antagonistic g sevens . I think it was very clear to see antagonistic g sevens . I think it was very clear to see today antagonistic g sevens . I think it| was very clear to see today from that body language there they are very pleased to seejoe biden. G7s. He is here, the elder statesman. He spent about the block many times. At the Junior Senator all the way back to the 1980s. He was the Vice President and i think he brings that gravitas to the proceedings. He has said come he said of the men he landed in the uk that democracy, western democracy, is that inflection point. The minute he landed. The liberal democracies have to show that they can lead but as you heard there from lauras report, while the objective they set themselves, 1 billion doses of this vaccine to go out before the end of the year, is a very good start, it is critically significant amount of The Americans have pledged, we compare that to the 11 billion that are needed and maybe some 66 billion in funding that is needed, it is only a drop in the ocean. There is a tension as well in the background here for all the smiles and the camaraderie. The european say hang on, we have been donated vaccines for some time and have been doing this. The americans in the uk side talked a good game early but they have been given anything yet. So whether or not they make any public statements by sunday, by the communique about more vaccines they will donate, i think thatis vaccines they will donate, i think that is open to question at the moment. Whether or not they hand borisjohnson moment. Whether or not they hand Boris Johnson that victory needs moment. Whether or not they hand borisjohnson that victory needs to be seen and we will look in the detail of that come sunday. The devil is in the detail. figs detail of that come sunday. The devil is in the detail. Detail of that come sunday. The devil is in the detail. As you say, it is releasing devil is in the detail. As you say, it is releasing what devil is in the detail. As you say, it is releasing what come devil is in the detail. As you say, it is releasing what come sunday because theres already been criticism that the final document on everything from Climate Change to economic recovery might not exactly meet really the need what people think is needed at this moment as we crossed to the Recovery Stages of the pandemic. Crossed to the Recovery Stages of the pandemic crossed to the Recovery Stages of the pandemic. That is true, but ive been speaking the pandemic. That is true, but ive been speaking to the pandemic. That is true, but ive been speaking to people the pandemic. That is true, but ive been speaking to people around the pandemic. That is true, but ive| been speaking to people around the g7 today, people who analyse the commitments of the g7 letters make and what is actually delivered and they say actually at this moment in time all the seven countries are delivering what they promised in the early part of the pandemic, when they met by zoom last year. So they score reasonably well. And they also remind me that what is happening here is the g7 is setting a trajectory. We have the g20 summit coming up in rome in october, and what is decided here thus form the basis of what is negotiated later in the year running up to the un World Climate conference, the cop 26 in glasgow. It is important once delivered here but you are right, there is a scepticism on the sidelines and among the activists we see here in cornwall that they talk with promises and then dont deliver. And i think people will remain sceptical until borisjohnson remain sceptical until Boris Johnson and remain sceptical until borisjohnson and the other leaders can reassure them that the things they are setting out here will bring about meaningful change. Meaningful change. Thank you, christian. As we mentioned, World Leaders have pledged to donate more than one billion covid vaccines to poorer countries that are struggling to vaccinate their populations. In south africa for example only one percent of the population has had theirfirstjab. 0ur Science Editor David Shukman has been looking at whether todays commitment from g7 leaders will be enough to defeat this pandemic globally. He sent this report. Coronavirus vaccines are starting to reach the remotest corners of the world. This team has come to a village in kenya. But the problem isnt so much giving out doses, but getting hold of them in the first place, to have any chance of getting even a fraction of each country immunised by the autumn. Africa needs an extra 225 million doses. This will really require a massive effort, as our early projections indicate that without a significant boost in the availability of vaccines, only seven african countries will achieve this goal. So far, Around The World, about 2 billion doses have been given and some 480 Million People are now fully vaccinated. But thats still only 6. 2 of the global population, and some regions have done far better than others. Sub Saharan Africa has received only 1 of all Vaccine Doses, and 18 african countries have either totally run out like morocco and rwanda or are due to run out in the next few weeks, including kenya and ghana. 50, africa is really the. Seems to be the last continent that will be vaccinated. It will be mid to end of next year, by our calculations. But currently, there simply arent enough doses available for africa. They havent procured enough doses. And the real problem is that africa is not producing any doses. They dont have any domestic production, apart from a little bit in south africa. So, what needs to happen . Well, weve had a flurry of offers from the g7. The us promising 500 million doses, the uk 100 million, the eu the same, and japan, 30 million. But the medical charity the Wellcome Trust says the rich nations should be giving a billion doses this year, and also filling a gap in the funding of 18 billion for testing and for treatments in the poorest countries. And as a reminder of the urgency of all this, uganda is the latest country to go back into lockdown, with schools closing and children sent home, as cases have suddenly shot up again. There is a clear route out of the pandemic but, as things stand, it will take time. David shukman, bbc news. Joining me now for more is dr Krishna Udaya kumar, director of Duke Universitys Global Health innovation centre. Thank you so much forjoining us. We saw there is a striking difference in Vaccination Rates amongst countries. Do you think what has been announced at the g7 will help rid the world of covid fast enough . You take a look at where we are, we have largely been crawling so far and i think the commitments that we thing this week of1 billion doses over the next year from the g7 access to a place where we are walking but if we will beat this pandemic, really need to be sprinting. When billion is a big number, but when you put it in the context, it is nowhere near what is actually needed to bring this pandemic to an end. The actually needed to bring this pandemic to an end. Pandemic to an end. The un secretarygeneral pandemic to an end. The un secretarygeneral has pandemic to an end. The un secretarygeneral has been | pandemic to an end. The un secretarygeneral has been speaking Secretary General has been speaking at a press conference, reacting in saying that he would like to see more of an emergency Global Task Force will stop wetting your opinion when Something Like that look like . Yes, and we earlier this week called for a Vaccine Emergency Tax Force because we need to see stronger coordination of where these donations are going to come from. But also where and how to get the dish of mission they may need so there is a need for transparency, accountability to make sure these happen that a text which really could take on. We are already seeing new variants because issues in countries with the langley openings. Especially countries with low Vaccination Rates. Are you concerned that if variances do continue to spread that they could become immune to some of the vaccines . That spread that they could become immune to some of the vaccines . To some of the vaccines . That is a deel to some of the vaccines . That is a deeply concerning to some of the vaccines . That is a deeply concerning threat to some of the vaccines . That is a deeply concerning threat that to some of the vaccines . That is a deeply concerning threat that is i deeply concerning threat that is looming. We know the deaths of varying for example does not avoid immunity but you have to have two doses of the vaccine to have real protection against it. And most of the world hasnt had to doses of full immunisations in order to be fully protected from the variance that are becoming dominant now. So as long as we start to keep seeing the humanitarian crises like we have in brazil and india that we are starting to see happen now and parts of the Southeast Asia and sub Saharan Africa, we will continue to see emerging variance and none of us safe as long as that is happening. Us safe as long as that is happening us safe as long as that is happening. Us safe as long as that is haueninu. ~. , happening. Thank you so much for our happening. Thank you so much for your time lets turn now to ethiopia because the uns humanitarian chief says there is famine now in the northern province of tigray. A un backed analysis has found that 350,000 people are living in severe crisis in and around the war torn region, where Government Forces are fighting rebels. But the ethiopian government, which rejects the analysis, insists its restoring order there. Mark lobel reports. This 1a year old, one of Hundreds Of Thousands In Northern Ethiopia caught in what the un calls a catastrophic food situation. His uncle says he was as strong as a lion before this. Translation we were hiding and living in a cave for more than three months because of the war. We were only eating roasted barley. Six people died and we had to bury them during the evening, as it was not possible to do it during the day. This mother relies on food hand outs since her home was destroyed. Translation there l were about 20 of them. They gathered around my house and thrashed all my crops. I have nightmares of my house from before it was burned, and we had to flee to another area. They kept getting closer, burning all the harvested crops and straw. They burned everything i had. Food security Analysis Shows ethiopias War Torn Tigray and two neighbouring states have the highest number of People Living in severe crisis since somalias famine a decade ago. Ethiopias government rejects that. It says its restoring order across the region, insisting humanitarian access is being expanded. But the World Food Programme is ramping up its Food Distributions to reach around one and a half Million People. If insecurity persists and accessing those in need remains problematic, more starvation and death will follow. Mark lobel, bbc news. In other news. The Us Department ofjustice will investigate efforts by the Trump Administration to seize Cell Phone Data of democrats in the us house or representatives. Still to come on tonights programme ecosystems Around The World have flourished during the pandemic but one town in scotland worries that as lockdowns end, Endangered Species may suffer. Goldman sachs has told its staff they must disclose their Vaccination Status before returning to the office. Michele fleury has more from new york. Goldman sachs, one of the big Investment Banking firms here in the us had said it is ok that they will ask their us employees to disclose whether they have been vaccinated, they are saying we are not asking you to be vaccinated, that is a personal choice, but we just want to know whether you have or have not been so we can safely plan the return to office work. The question is, when you have a firm of the stature of Goldman Sachs doing this, does this mean that other firms will follow their lead . I think that is the question and youre seeing some pushback from other firms like apple, simplyjust telling the staff that they will have to return to an office a couple of days a week in the autumn. That got some pushback, saying you are not recognising our lived experience of the past year. So it is a delicate issue, as we all try to readjust to life back in an office. Its been more than a century since the sea eagle has been spotted in southern scotland. During the quiet months of lockdown, the birds returned to nest. But now, with activity and footfall increasing, there are fears that they could be scared away again. 0ur scotland correspondent lorna gordon sent us this report. Out on patrol in the waters of loch lomond, the rangers who make sure any visitors here, both human and animal, remain safe, are now looking out for britains largest bird of prey, too. Have you seen these birds . I have, indeed. There is no mistaking them. They are absolutely huge. It was more shock at first. We are used to seeing ospreys and buzzards, gulls, crows, anything like that, loads of different wildlife birds. But seeing a white tailed eagle, its a good feeling. With their 8ft wingspan, sea eagles, or white tailed eagles, were once hunted to extinction. But successfully reintroduced, there are now thought to be over 150 Breeding Pairs. As their numbers have grown, the territory they can be spotted in has spread. I dont think my luck s in today, unfortunately. No sign today, no. The loch lomond pair arrived during the quiet of lockdown. Experts hope, even as it gets busier again, they will choose to stay. Very heavily protected, so we are obviously avoiding disturbance of them, but they are wonderful birds to see back. The fear we have is the birds will be disturbed from people either walking and getting too close to the nest, orfrom being on the water, either kayaking orjet skiing. But the hope is that wont happen and the birds will come back next year and they will breed successfully and we will have a Breeding Pair of sea eagles on loch lomond. But not everyone is happy to see the birds return. In some locations, sea eagles have attacked lambs. And while this hasnt happened here, farmers are concerned and warn they will be counting their livestock. It is more than a century since sea eagles have been seen nesting this close to glasgow. Their reappearance means a new balance is needed between all those who use these waters. But conservationists hope that, with a little help, they will stay, breed and flourish. Final preparations are under way in the uk for tomorrows Military Parade Celebrating the queens 95th birthday. The event known as Trooping The Colour has once again been adapted to comply with covid restrictions. For the second year running, the parade will take place in the grounds of Windsor Castle rather than central london. 0ur Royal Correspondent Sarah Campbell watched as final rehearsals got under way. Bagpipes cavalry barracks, in hounslow, west london. The scots guards prepare to troop their colour. With large ceremonial events off the calendar due to covid, rather than marching, many troops have been manning testing and vaccination centres. And for those with leading roles, there are a few understandable nerves. A bit more pressure. Id say more poignant, in a way. About turn were just trying to do our bit and crack on and keep the nation going, on something thats quite a special day considering what has happened in the past year for not only her majesty, but us as a nation as a whole. And its notjust the soldiers having to get used to being back on parade. Today is quite a nervous day, in that this was my first mounted rehearsal. Some of the horses that have done maybe five or six Trooping The Colours, you know, theyll hopefully hold the newer horses and theyll be able to follow their lead. And those that havent seen the bearskins and havent seen the rifles, hopefully, theylljust take their lead from the older ones and theyll all behave today. Forward. Still social distancing has been a key consideration, strictly enforced. And to avoid the potential crowds in central london, the event will be held in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Theres 300, as opposed to 1,500, what wed normally have on. There is no hiding place, so everybody is dedicated to being the best that they possibly can be. And well all deliver an excellent parade, which will hopefully cheer up the nation, certainly put a smile on her majestys face. Taking the salute at the dress rehearsal, nine year old hasti brannigan. Tomorrow, itll be the commander in chief, the queen, as almost normal service resumes. Sarah campbell, bbc news, west london. Thank you for watching world news america. Good evening. Theres certainly been a lot more cloud around today, but not for all of us. In fact, further south and east, we did get some sunshine and some warmth. This was hastings a little earlier on. A Weather Front introduced more cloud generally across the country and a slightly fresher feel behind it as well. Now, the cloud didnt produce that much in the way of rain, but certainly it was quite persistent. And at times, many of us had scenes like this. This was leek in staffordshire. Good grass cutting weather, though, it has to be said. Now, as we move through this evening, that Weather Front sinks its way into the south east. We keep some cloud through the night as well. And because it was a cold front and its introduced something a little less humid behind, itll be a much more comfortable night for trying to get a good nights sleep. 0vernight lows between 9 111 degrees. High pressure then builds once again in from the south west and the Wind Direction coming from the south west, so some pretty warm, humid air starts to return as that air source comes all the way up from the azores. So, on saturday, it may well start off quite cloudy, but the sunshine breaks through very quickly indeed. A few isolated showers into the far north of scotland, and maybe a little more cloud into the north west. So, here, 14 17 degrees, but we could see highest values of 24. Thats the Mid 70s Fahrenheit by the middle of the afternoon. It bodes well for day three of the second test at edgbaston. As you can see quite clearly, certainly more sunshine than weve seen today and turning increasingly hot on sunday. Now, you cant avoid it, yes, the euros arrive, and wales first match looks likely, although its in baku, to be a hot affair as well. 27 degrees is likely with blue sky and sunshine. Back Close To Home now for sunday, a lot of sunshine around on sunday. A weak Weather Front will bring some cloud and showery rain into the Western Isles potentially, but 26 degrees not out of the question for aberdeen. 28 degrees is likely into the london area, and that means that for englands opening match against croatia at wembley, it is certainly going to be a hot affair. Sunscreen and sun hat at the ready if youre lucky enough to have tickets. The heat looks likely to peak on monday with indications of something a little fresher from tuesday.
