Knife. I dont know what it was. And thats when i started to run out through a side door, together with all the people in the dining room. I came back in, grabbed the coffee table that was on the floor, hit him in his faith, and thats when he came back outside after me. He told me, hey, yao, ill get you. Were covering both of these horrific attacks. Cnns Brynn Gingras is in muncie, new york, and lucy kafanov is outside the church just west of ft. Worth, texas. Lucy, walk us through exactly what happened during the shooting. Ryan, it happened so quickly, less than 24 hours ago, the gunman dressed in dark clothing walked into the church, he sat down in a back pew, he then gets up and appears to have an interaction with one of the Church Members before pulling out a long gun and opening fire. Two armed volunteers respond swiftly, taking him down. The whole thing captured on camera, because those services were live streamed. And i should warn our viewers, the footage is incredibly disturbing. [ gunfire ] [ screaming ] reporter the whole thing playing out over six seconds. The reason why there were these armed Church Security volunteers, ryan, was because of a previous mass shooting in 2017. 26 people died in the Sutherland SpringsTexas Church Shooting. In the wake of that, texas enacted legislation, allowing licensed handgun owners to bring firearms into the church. That is why those armed volunteers responded so quickly. The casualties could have been much higher. There was 242 people inside that church. The volunteers being praised as heros. Take a listen. The true heros in this are the people who were sitting in those pews. The citizens who were inside that church undoubtedly saved 242 other parishioners. Were now waiting for more information regarding the motive, as well as the identity of that shooter, ryan. Lucy, what else are you learning about the gunman at this point . Well, they havent revealed his name, but the fbi did say that he was known as a relatively transient person, with roots in this area. We know that hes had many runins with the law. Multiple arrests in multiple municipalities. We also know that he hasnt been on any sort of a watch list. So that is the bare bones information that we have at the moment. Obviously, the question everyone here is asking is why. Ryan . Lucy kafanov life just outside ft. Worth, texas. Lucy, thank you for that report. Meanwhile, in new york, Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling the stabbing at a rabbis home an act of domestic terrorism. He has ordered the state Police Hate Crimes task force to investigate the attack, which comes as new yorks Jewish Community deals with a surge in antisemitic violence. Governor cuomo says there have been 13 antisemitic attacks just this month alone. Cnn has been able to independently confirm 11 of them, which you can see on your screen. Lets get now to Brynn Gingras, she is live outside the home where the stabbing took place. Brynn, give us the latest on the investigation there. Reporter right now, we know that authorities are really trying to figure out a motive for this suspect, 38yearold grafton thomas. His home is about 30 minutes, 40 minutes from where we are here, where the rabbis house is. So its unclear right now to authorities why he picked this home as his target, being so far away from his house. We know that there were investigators inside his house, taking out evidence, hopefully trying to point and paint a clearer picture of what caused all of this. But at this point, authorities are not releasing a motive. However, this suspects family has released a statement through his attorney, essentially saying that he is not antisemitic and that he has a history of mental illness, of schizophrenia, and theyre trying to say that is why he went on this rampage. Now, again, it is a rampage that has really struck this community. This particular town in Rockland County, Rockland County has the largest Jewish Population per capita in all of the United States. So everyone here really on edge as authorities continue to try to get answers as to what caused all of this. So, brynn, can you tell me how authorities are responding to these antisemitic attacks . Reporter we know theyre actually stepping up patrols in this area, but also at places of worship and in synagogues, but not just in this town, ryan. Its happening all over the state. We heard Governor Cuomo talking about that, but even the mayor of new york city saying theyre doing the same there. Again, the suspect was arrested in new york city. He traveled there and was arrested about two hours after the attack happened here. And we know about that attack that happened earlier this month in jersey city, just how far new york city, where it was a deadly attack inside a kosher supermarket. So this whole area is really stepping up patrols, but you pointed out, you know, before coming to me about hold up Governor Cuomo pointed to those incidents. This Community Says that they are really trying to, you know, educate, not just Law Enforcement, depending on Law Enforcement, they want to try to educate this community on how disastrous this hate can be. All right. Brynn gingras live in muncie, new york. New yorks Jewish Community wants answers and actions after these violent incidents. The Antidefamation League says, quote, new york has a growing problem. This is at least the tenth antisemitic incident to hit the new york area in just the last week. When will it be enough . The Jewish Community is under assault. All of america must hear our cry. And joining us now to discuss this is oren sooiegel. I want to play for you some sound from this morning from the rabbi at the tree of life synagogue, where 11 worshippers were killed last year in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. And hes been talking about this fear thats prevalent in the Jewish Community right now. Take a listen. It made me sort of wonder, i dont recall them selling licenses to have open hunting season on jews, but it sure can make jewss feel th feel that wa. Thats pretty stark. Would you agree with that assessment . The Jewish Community feels like theyre under attack. And this is not something that has just transpired over the last ten days. You know, you look back to pittsburgh and what we just heard and poway and jersey city and weve had over, you know, 1,500 antisemitic incidents for three years in a row. So you can understand why the Jewish Community is on edge and fearful for their security and safety. So we do see a lot of leaders coming together, responding to this quickly. Obviously, the governor has called it an act of domestic terrorism. Do you feel that the state of new york, the city of new york are doing enough to combat this problem . Listen, its really important that there are more patrols, that Law Enforcement is doing a great job in terms of identifying some of the perpetrators. But Law Enforcement is not the answer to stopping antisemitism. Right, if you want to really make an investment in the future, in the fight against hate, it starts with education. And so we need to make sure, as were doing in brooklyn, bringing our no place for hate programs to that community, that you teach people at a young age how to identify hate, how to not be a bystander, and how to be an ally. Hopefully that moves the needle in the longterm. But certainly in the immediately, we need more protection. There are so many heartbreaking aspects of this story. But one thing that really struck me families afraid to put menorahs in their window during the hanukkahseason, perhaps even parade that . Are there folks of the jewish faith that are fearful right now to display their faith publicly . We are hearing those stories and in particular, this focuses on the orthodox community, which is just more visibly jewish in terms of the clothes that they wear, et cetera. And thats very serious. But i think its really important for every story of fear and anxiety is to tell those stories of resilience. Just yesterday in muncie, they all went out into the street and they celebrated and said that we are not going to be devastated by one act. And so those stories of resilience and the Jewish Community coming together, its not a monolithic community, we are all together in this moment, and that brings hope to be able to overcome what we are experiencing. How much does the Jewish Community lean on its history to help it through instances like this. This is not the first time that jewish people have been the target over the course of history. Its not the first time that jewss have be have been the tar. But its not unreasonable to expect that jews have experience what had were experiencing. Sitting back is not an option. The big difference between now and the instances in history has been the rise of social media and the access that those who want to espouse these awful hatredfilled views can do so on pretty large platforms. How much do you think thats contributed to that rhetoric actually turning into reality . In this day and age, its easier to find antisemitism than at any other time in human history. People are reaching, recruiting and radicalize through weaponizing social media, harassing, targeting you ining others through social media. So the volume there outpaces what we see on the ground, but the linkage is part of the story. Do you think that these Silicon Valley tech companies, much like i asked you about leaders here in new york, should they be doing more to combat this type of extremism on their platforms . The simple answer is yes, they need to be doing a lot more. They need to make sure that people dont have ability to leverage and exploit their platforms wherever they want for hatred, antisemitism and glorification of violence. Oren segall, obviously a very difficult time for your community. We appreciate your voice in all of this and good luck going forward. This morning, new information about two witnesses who democrats would like to see testify in President Trumps impeachment trial. Acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former National Security adviser john bolton. The New York Times reports that mulvaney emailed an aide on june 27th, saying, quote, im just trying to tie up some loose ends. Did we ever find out about the money for ukraine and whether we can hold it back . And that the aide replied, it would be possible, but not pretty. Expect congress to become unhinge. The times also states that bolton along with defense secretary mark esper and secretary of state mike pompeo held a previously undisclosed meeting with President Trump and that they tried but failed to convince him that releasing the aid was in the interest of the United States. Joining me now to talk about this, republican congressman bill mccollum. He was one of the house members chosen to be a manager during president clintons impeachment trial. So he has unique insight into all of this. So congressman, first, given this new information in this New York Times report, these emails showing mulvaneys role in attempting to block that ukraine aid. Then the greater opposition to withholding aid by bolton and some of these other top security advisers, how important now does it become for mulvaney and bolton to testify during the Senate Impeachment trial . Well, first of all, i dont think theyve shed any really substantial new light, because withholding aid itself is not unusual for a president to do for various reasons. For example, in this case, ostensib ostensibly, to get the president of ukraine to ferret out more corruption than had been done by his predecessors, but even so, if you want to get those two to testify, i think youve got a real battle over executive privilege. They are very close to the president , theyre in the white house, theyre top staff. The democrats on the house side did not choose to pursue the court avenue to try to contest that fact. I dont think they would have success if they did, but they didnt try. So at this point in time, i dont see them as being witnesses. I dont see them as being called or if theres an effort to call them, i dont think its going to go very far. The point that you make there about the difference between withholding the aid for whatever reason, but tying the withholding of aid to compelling the government of ukraine to investigate Vice President biden his son, thats the missing link there, right . Wouldnt them testifying during the senate trial at least attempt to try to close that link or eliminate that as a possibility . Well, certainly, i think most people feel there is a missing link, if you will here, in terms of sufficient proof. The case is very weak going over there, with respect to article i, which is the one that says or alleges that the president withheld the aid in order to get at Vice President biden or to do something political for his own advantage. I dont think that the republicans ever got to present their witnesses on the other side. It would be interesting to see a trial with witnesses. When we tried to clinton impeachment case, we were allowed three witnesses, only by deposition. And it was an effort to prove our case. So if the house managers want to present witnesses, i would hope, as i had hoped in the clinton trial, that the senate would allow a certain number of witnesses to be presented. If mulvaney and bolton could somehow be brought forward by virtue of subpoenas, that would be honored or voluntarily, that would be fine, as far as im concerned. But the bottom line is this, though. I dont think even if you take on face value that the president withheld the aid in order in large pressure to get at a political enemy, which i dont believe is the truth. I dont think thats what happened. But assuming thats the case, i still dont see it rising to the level of a high crime and misdemeanor, such as you had in the clinton impeachment trial or you had, with that matter, for andrew johnson, or you had it who was the president of the United States after lincoln was assassinated. Or in the case of nixon which did not go to trial, but it was clear that they committed real crimes. And we dont see those crimes here. So let me see if i can make sure i understand you 100 . So youre saying that if we had a convincing evidence, and we should point out that there are Many Democrats who do believe that evidence already exists, but in your mind, even if there were clear evidence that linked specifically the investigation into hunter biden and joe biden to the withholding of aid, that that does not rank as a high crime and misdemeanor in your mind . If thats the case, explain why. Well, it doesnt, in my mind. It does not rank as a high crime and misdemeanor, because, first of all, theres no crime here. Theres an alleged abuse of power. The fact of the matter is that the aid is being withheld and it may be offensive, its inappropriate. Its something that you can carry to the election next year and argue that the president has done a number of things that you dont agree with. But just withholding the aid on that basis doesnt strike me as one of those types of things that i would remove a president for. And thats really the issue. But, sir, just to withholding the aid because you specifically want them to investigate a political enemy, isnt that involving a Foreign Government in our election, in the United States election, isnt that a serious problem that goes beyond just Inappropriate Conduct by a president . Well, its not quite the same thing as saying, hey, we want to involve the Foreign Government in somehow tampering with the actual election process itself. Youre simply saying, assuming you take the extreme and take for its face value, which i do not believe you can prove that case and i dont believe they ever will. I believe the president s motives were to have corruption more broadly investigated, because the ukrainians had been involved in a lot of corruption and had been involved in our election in 2016, which is what really irritated that president. And they never had a chance to present those witnesses sir, if i could stop you assuming what you say is true but theres never been any type of established evidence that ukraine was specifically involved in tampering with the 2016 election. The Intelligence Community has well, there has been, there has been actually, there have been. There was the woman operative, if you will, from the Democrat National committee, who went over to the ukrainian embassy, seeking evidence against the president. You had the cooperation of the ambassador, not only on that occasion, but speaking out against trump in that campaign. You had things going on inside ukraine that appear to have shown that the then president of ukraine was very much supportive of mrs. Clintons election and outspokenly trying to help to do that. Does that mean the russians didnt tamper . No, its not one or the other. I would suggest that both did. And thats why suppressing the effort to bring witnesses, not allowing the republicans to bring the witnesses in the Intelligence Committee hearings, was a big mistake. And an unfair thing. But coming back to the facts of the case, lets assume, though, that everything is true, that the president was really withholding the aid, which he did for a little while, in an effort just to get at biden. That alone to me is not tampering in our elections in some way with a Foreign Government tampering. Its asking them investigate a possible corruption. Lets suppose that Vice President bidens son, hunter now, i dont think the Vice President himself is being accused here of doing something wrong, but lets assume his son was on burismas board and burisma is clearly a corrupt organization and the principle owner is an oligarch who still to this day is known to have been involved in highlylevel corruption in ukraine. So lets assume that thats an investigation that the president did want. And he wanted it of biden. And he hoped that it would result in something bad about biden for president ial election purposes. Thats not calling on ukraine to help him in the election, as it is calling on them to investigate the corruption they should have investigated all along, and if it just so happens, that helps him with the election and his motive wasnt good, we dont like his motive, thats not a reason to remove him from office. It trivializes impeachment, in my opinion. Congressman, there are obviously a lot of very differing opinions to your view on that, but we are unfortunately beginni unfortunately going to have to leave it there. Air strikes are carried out in iraq and syria that the pentagon says are tide to an iranianbacked militia. The pentagon says thats behind a series of attacks on joint u. S. iraqi bases. One of those attacks left an American Contractor dead and several other u. S. Service members injured. Cnn pentagon reporter ryan brown joins us now. Ryan, what can you tell us about these air strikes . Well, ryan, as you said, these strikes were part of an effort by the u. S. To get iran and its proxies there in iraq to stop its attacks on joint u. S. iraqi bases. There had been some highlevel diplomatic efforts prior to these strikes. Secretary pompeo, secretary perse had been calling their iraqi counterparts, stressing the need for them to get these militia groups under control, but it had little avail, and we saw that deadly friday attack against that u. S. iraqi base that led to the death of an American Contractor and wounded several other u. S. Service members. Again, the u. S. Military felt it necessary to conduct these strikes, hoping that it will deter iran and its local allies from conducting any additional strikes. But again, this has really complicated the situation. Its unclear, as you said, iran has warned of consequences. Some of these militia groups have threatened to strike back. The Iraqi Government has criticized attacks, saying it was a violation of their sovereignty. That calls into question, there are some 5,000 u. S. Troops still in iraq, where they work with the Iraqi Government and help fight isis. Whats going to become of them . Is iraq going to put pressure on them . Try to get some of them removed from the country over this fallout . Senior leaders concerned about where this was going to go, but theyre going to watch iran closely and its allies to make sure they dont try anything in retaliation of their own. Ryan brown, thank you for that update. Appreciate it. Lets talk more about it now. Sam vinograd, she was a Senior Adviser to president obama as a National Security adviser. Sam, tell me, the significance of the u. S. Military launching an air strike like this right now. Well, this is a clear message that the United States is prepared to really erode whats been an asymmetric advantage for iran and its proxies throughout the region. The United States military has been attacked by iranian proxies since we invaded iraq. This is nothing new. Ive ducked and covered from far more iranian rockets than i care to remember, all the way back in 2010. These strikes really show that the United States is no longer willing to tolerate this onslaught of iranian rockets against u. S. Forces. And is willing to take additional action to try to degrade capabilities. Thats the force protection piece of this. More broadly, we have to consider this in the context of the administrations countering iran initiatives. Iran is not just meddling through militias like kih in iraq, its also meddling politically. Weve just sanctioned several officials for their involvement in these protests in iraq and links to iran as well. So its the forced protection aspect as well as the countering iran more broadly piece. Lets shift gears and talk now about russia. Russian president Vladimir Putin and President Trump spoke on the phone yesterday. According to both sides, they talked about a potentially terrorism attacks in russia over the holidays. One of the things im struck by, sam, is that the kremlin released the information about this call before the white house did. In fact, the white house just officially acknowledged it about an hour ago. What does that tell you about russia getting the information out first . We should never outsource our pr to putin. Before every foreign leader call, the National Security team normally actually prepares a draft statement, so that its ready to go after the call concludes. And part of the reason for that is so that the foreign official, the other government, doesnt control the narrative about what happens. Thats for any call, ryan. With a rival, and by the way, a rival that excel s at informatin warfare, a rival that is involved in an Information Warfare against the American People as we speak, that becomes even more important. What happened in this case is the russians were able to really sew doubt about what actually happened on the call, because the white house did not release the statement. That is a selfinflicted wound. At the same time, im really wondering who got an internal readout of the call. We have reporting indicating that the president and his sinner circle have been restricting access to call readouts. So as important as the external piece of this is, we should be really asking questions about which members of the team internally know what happened on the call. There certainly was not much information on that external release. Only about a paragraph and not much substance at all. Sam vinograd, thank you for being here. We appreciate it. Coming up, it is joe biden versus everybody else. The former Vice President becomes the latest target on the campaign trail. Is it a Winning Strategy . Stay with us. Thats how well win healthcare, fair wages, and clean air and water as a right. Im tom steyer and i approve this message. Well, certainly respect the Vice President , but this is an example of why years in washington is not always the same thing as judgment. He supported the worst Foreign Policy decision made by the United States in my lifetime, which was the decision to invade iraq. That is democratic president ial candidate pete buttigieg, a vwar veteran, on te attack there against frontrunner joe biden. It comes just days after senator Bernie Sanders offered his own critical take on bidens record. Sanders telling the Los Angeles Times editorial board, quote, if youre a donald trump and you got biden, having voted for the war in iraq, biden having voted for these terrible, in my view, trade agreements, biden having voted for the bankruptcy bill, trump will eat his lunch, end quote. Joining me now, democratic congressman tim ryan of ohio. He, of course, a former 2020 president ial candidate. And last month, he endorsed the former Vice President for president , congressman ryan. You know, biden laughed off the sanders quote, saying that hell give sanders some desert at the white house after hes elected. But i have to ask you, do senator sanders and mayor buttigieg have a point . Is this vote to authorize the war in iraq a problem for the former Vice President . Well, i think theres a lot of votes, when you have a career as long as Vice President biden, that people are going to nitpick at. But the reality of it is that he was part and parcel of a very successful Democratic Administration with president obama. You want to talk about the iran deal, you want to talk about passing universal health care for the first time in the history of the country, joe biden was in the middle of all of that. He has a great record that hes going to run on. Hes still enjoying a lot of support here in the industrial midwest, significant support in the africanamerican and latino community. So hes doing well and this is not to be this is expected at this point of the race. So you probably saw over the weekend the Vice President going back and forth about the situation regarding the Senate Impeachment trial, initially saying that he would refuse a senate subpoena, then saying that he would comply with the law. How do you think he should handle this situation . It seems unlikely that he would be called to testify as a witness, but at the very least, this is President Trump attempting to drag him in to the controversy surrounding impeachment. Its pretty sad. I mean, i think its consistent with President Trump, you know, creating a reality it have show out of our democracy. I think its consistent with what Mitch Mcconnell has been doing, saying he is working hand in glove with the white house, when hes supposed to be an impartial jury or head of an impartial jury in the United States senate. Theyre going to do everything and continue to try to do what they can to try to dirty up joe biden. But if theres an independent voter, an openminded republican voter out there, just ask yourself, isnt this exactly what donald trump was trying to do in the ukraine . Trying to figure out any which way he can to muddy up joe biden and now hes trying to use the United States senate to be able to do it . And i think this trial over the holidays, i think there have been a lot of conversations about specific senators needing to step up and at least when it comes to who the witnesses are or what the evidence is and should be to come forward, this trial may end up being a little different than the republicans expected. So to that end, how long should House Speaker nancy pelosi hold on to these articles of impeachment until she gets the kind of trial shes looking for. Your colleague, congressman dan killday says it could take until february before those articles get handed over. Whats your view . I think thats right. I think congressman kildee may be right. He is in house leadership. He probably has a good bead on this stuff. And i think we just want a fair trial. The American People deserve a fair, impartial trial in the United States senate. And look, this is real the president asked a foreign leader to get involved in an american election, to try to dirty up a political opponent. Those are the facts, undisputed. I listened to an earlier interview you had with a republican congressman. He was living in fantasyland. I mean, that is delusion this is about the facts of the case. Let the facts come forward. If President Trump is so innocent, let his people testify. Bring them forward, bring all the transcripts forward. Let the American People make their own political decisions and let the senate make their decision. So this could drag on for quite some time in your view, congressman. Before i let you go, i do want to get your reaction to your colleague, congressman john lewis. Of course, a civil rights icon, announcing hes battling pancreatic cancer. Just your thoughts about congressman lewis and this struggle he is now facing. Hes been an inspiration to every Single Member of congress in the 18 years that ive been the there. To see him now face a terrific battle ahead of him, he has a lot of people praying for him. If anybody has the strength and the courage to beat this, its john lewis. And, you know, hes an icon and a leader and an inspiration to all of us. And my wife andrea and i, our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. And we just hope for the best. Congressman tim ryan, we appreciate your thoughts on that. Thank you very much for joining us, sir, on this holiday week. A happy new year to you and your family. Happy new year, thanks. And the winner is Linda Ronstadt. The winner is Linda Ronstadt. Recently, kate balduan sat down with the music legend whos known ronstadt for decades. J. D. Souther. Heres their conversation. Joining me now, j. D. Souther, singer, songwriter with more also a close friend of Linda Ronstadt. J. D. , its great to see you. Nice to see you. Thank you so much for being here. Linda was the ultimate crossover artist, the first artist to have hits on pop, r b and country at the same time. Just one of the Amazing Things about her. You knew her. What allowed her to move through these genres so successfully . Thats a long answer, but to make it fit within this time frame, i would say she probably has the biggest music vocabulary of anyone i ever met. She already knew those types of music intimately. Then when you add that to an instrument thats just probably i mean, i think shes the greatest singer of my generation, and im very picky about singers. I grew up with basically two or three favorite singers, ray charles and Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and the combinations of lennon and mccartney together. When i met her i thought, this is as good a singer as ive heard. She literally can sing anything, everything, any genre you could throw at her. That was apparent in what she put out. One of the things that comes across really clearly in this film that i didnt know, and we also saw it during the Kennedy Center honors earlier this month, is her very real and Close Relationships with other female artists who became huge stars in their own right. Bonnie raitt, emmy lou harris, dolly parton. Did linda ever talk about that with you, because this is a cutthroat business youre in, and this was women lifting other women up professionally, which wasnt something anyone really talked about. I knew those women as well. They were within our group of flends. I never had to be convinced of anything. Im trying to think of a girl singer that she introduced me to who wasnt great, and i cant think of one. The time was just right. You have to know when the moment is right for something, and emotionally, politically, spiritually, i think the world was just ready to hear the gender that is more than half the population singing. You wrote i think it was almost a dozen songs for linda. Is there a favorite for you to hear her sing or something that surprised you after writing it and hearing her sing it, how it turned out . I say this in the most flattering way possible. I was almost never surprised by the results. She could very often sing a song better than the person that wrote it, and it was not a source of embarrassment but a real delight. Its a song writers drewriter someone of her talent recording her songs because they often made us look better. I think some of her versions, i much prefer them to my versions. In the film, linda talks about her diagnosis with parkinsons and how that ended her singing career. Knowing her the way that you do, what do you think it means to her to not be able to sing anymore . I have family who have suffered with parkinsons, and its really powerful to have her speaking about it in such a way. It is. Taking away her art form, i just im really wondering what that meant to her. I know exactly what it meant to her, and it was heartbreaking. I mean, she will tell you in an instant that she still hears herself singing. She can hear the music in her head and she can hear songs that she wants to sing. She just actually doesnt have the physical strength in her larynx to control the waver of the note. Anything less than great is not great enough. Shes still perfection. Its great to talk to you. Thank you so much for being here, j. D. Thank you, its my pleasure. I hope everybody sees this documentary about her, because its a beautiful film about a beautiful and powerful woman. Absolutely. J. D. Southwoer, great to meet y. Great to meet you. Linda ronstadt the sound of my voice is at 9 00 p. M. On new years day on cnn.
