If any positive food-related outcomes have emerged over the last year, one has been the opportunity to treat ourselves to something delicious without having to leave our homes. The ongoing chatter about restaurants and takeout has proven that hot prepared food remains a major preoccupation of food lovers everywhere but pulling a special, locally made treat out of one’s own cupboard or fridge is also a pandemic pleasure.
This, coupled with people’s desire to minimize trips to busy grocery stores, is why we’ve seen so many grocery, meal kit, and grab ‘n’ go delivery services pop up in Calgary. The latest is from an outfit called Market Basket YYC, which sells a selection of carefully chosen local products, either packed to order or as curated boxes designed for anything from family feasts to intimate charcuterie nights. This is not a new concept and there are other local food boxes on the market, but what differentiates Market Basket YYC is its connection to local chefs who have also been shifting gears to produce take-home products.
