Cesar Chavez, in full Cesar Estrada Chavez, (born March 31, 1927, Yuma, Arizona, U.S.—died April 23, 1993, San Luis, Arizona), organizer of migrant American farmworkers and a cofounder with Dolores Huerta of the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) in 1962. Chavez, who was a farm labourer himself, grew up in a family of Mexican American descent. After his parents lost their farm during the Great Depression, the family moved to California, where they became migrant workers.
