Kuntzsch will be moving to Nelson for the role, and said in a statement that he was looking forward to leading Cawthron, New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation.
“It is almost impossible for me to contain my excitement about embarking on this purposeful journey to help understand and realise Aotearoa New Zealand's opportunities in aquaculture and the freshwater environment,” he said.
Cawthron chairwoman Meg Matthews said Kuntzsch was joining Cawthron at an exciting time, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Cawthron Institute is New Zealand’s largest independent scientific organisation.
