A community walk honouring the Indigenous lives lost in Canada’s residential school system will take place along the Avon River in Stratford on Thursday evening.
Organizers said the event, hosted by the Multicultural Association of Perth-Huron, is being held in a spirit of “reflection, healing and reconciliation” while recognizing the outstanding calls to action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada six years ago.

“We’ve heard from many members of this community since learning about the discoveries of unmarked graves of children at residential school sites,” said Geza Wordofa, founder and president of the Multicultural Association, in a release. “So for July 1 this year, in addition to celebrating the many wonderful aspects of Canada and of being Canadian, we hope to show members of the Indigenous communities we’ve heard their sorrow and we stand with them in solidarity.”
