Boyett: The formal laying out of Henderson will mark its 225th anniversary next year

The plat that mapped out the bones of Henderson’s core will see its 225th anniversary next spring.
Gen. Samuel Hopkins, agent for the Transylvania Co., along with surveyor Col. Thomas Allin completed their survey of the town on April 6, 1797. That laid out the blocks between Green Street and the Ohio River as well as 12 blocks extending north and south from Center Street.
To my way of thinking, that’s the best candidate for the date of Henderson’s founding. Melicent B. Quinn agreed in writing a story that appeared in The Gleaner May 5, 1946, in which she condensed much of Hopkins’ report to the Transylvania Co. “The work (of surveying the town) had been completed April 6, 1797, thus making April 6 Henderson’s official birthday,” Quinn wrote.
