And it leads people to take decisions that are lonely, isolating and incredibly risky, just like my father. And, really, what the law should do is protect people. The noes to the left, 330. Its been almost ten years since mps voted against assisted dying. Since then, countries including canada, australia and New Zealand have legalised it. High profile figures like Dame Esther rantzen have reignited the debate. She has terminal lung cancer, and the Prime Minister gave her a personal commitment that hed allow a Debate And Vote in the commons. A Labour Mp has now taken up the cause and will introduce her own bill later this month. I think the mood has changed publicly, and i think it probably has changed within parliament, so i have spoken to quite a lot of the new intake of mps, and they think the time is right to have this debate. They are nervous in some respects as am i, because its such an important issue and its such an emotive issue. And i really hope that, for my part, i can facilitate that in what is a respectful and compassionate way. We want choice if it becomes law, the new right is likely to apply to those whove been told they have less than six months to live, and doctors would have to approve. But opponents say better end of Life Care should be the priority. Nobody needs to die in unbearable physical agony if they get the best possible care, and thats what we should be putting all our focus on. If we change the law in this direction, well do less of that and well simply be encouraging people down this route towards an artificial death. The makeup of the House Of Commons has changed significantly since the last time there was a vote on this issue, back in 2015. Those campaigning for a change in the law say theyre hopeful that with a large number of new Labour Mps, there could now be a majority in favour of assisted dying. The arguments are as contentious as ever, but many think its now time for parliament to look at the issue once again. Vicki young, bbc news, westminster. Lets speak to vicky young. Whats the timeframe on this, and how likely is it that this could be voted through . The beginning could be voted through . The beginning of could be voted through . Tue beginning of this could be voted through . Tte beginning of this bill could be voted through . Tte beginning of this bill and could be voted through . Tte beginning of this bill and the passage to parliament will be in a couple weeks time. As you know, theres different things it has to go through, different hurdles. The first reading will be in a couple weeks, and thats just a formality, if you like. The big occasion will come on the second Reading Meeting there will be a full debate in the House Of Commons about the broad issues. Its worth pointing out this bill has not been finally drafted yet, there is a similar one in the House Of Lords at the moment, so i think it will be quite similar to the contents of that. And then its a matter of that. And then its a matter of how far it progresses he could be voted out at second reading and that would be The End of campaigners feel the commons has changed an awful lot since the last vote ten years ago. Some think that, because there are a lot more new Labour Mps, they could change things. There are some conservative mps we know if you have changed their mind since last time round. So there is a feeling the public mood has shifted and potentially the views of mps have shifted. The vote could well happen before christmas. The government has said it will remain neutral. We know the Prime Minister previously voted in favour in a change to the law to bring in assisted dying we dont know what hell do this time round. The government have said it will remain neutral, that its a matter of conscience for mp5 so they can go as they wish, they wont be told what to do by their party leaders. So then, after that, we have to wait and see how long it will take, but of course it would have to go through the House Of Commons, it could be amended and then it has to make its way through the House Of Lords as well. , ~ through the House Of Lords as well. ~ ,. , through the House Of Lords as well. , ~ ,. , through the House Of Lords as well. ~ ,. Well. Thank you very much indeed as the world focuses on the conflict between israel and hezbollah, the war in gaza continues, with significant civilian casualties. The bbc has been examining a deadly Air Strike on the 21st Of September on a school in Gaza City housing displaced people, finding it killed several children in order to target one local hamas figure. Daniel de simone reports. Gaza remains the epicentre of this war where children pay for the deadly feuds of adults. Translation what have we done as children . We wake up and go to sleep terrified. At least protect the schools. We dont have schools or homes. Where do we go . This former school in Gaza City, Housing Amal and other displaced people, was hit by an israeli Air Strike on 21st september. Israels military says it was a precise strike on terrorists in a Hamas Command and control centre. The hamas run authorities say it killed 22 people, including 13 children and six women. Huda alhadad lost two children. Muhammad was 13. Hanan, i2. Translation here was my daughter, my dearest, my heart. I went down searching for her. My heart told me she was there and i told them, my daughter is here, under this pile. Targeting hamas but at what cost . We have been told one of the 22 killed was a local hamas figure. Israels military says steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians and that hamas violates International Law by operating from within civilian buildings. Since the 21 SeptemberAir Strike, fatal strikes targeting hamas have continued to hit former Schools Housing displaced families. According to unicef, more than 50 of schools used as shelters in gaza have been directly hit during the current conflict. In this cruel war, pity is as elusive as peace. Daniel de simone, bbc news, jerusalem. Now to taiwan, where the typhoon has made landfall near the islands second city, even though its been downgraded to a category one, Wind Gusts at the Port Have recorded 220 kph also at least two people have been killed and more than 100 injured so far due to torrential rains and ferocious winds. Thousands have been evacuated and schools and offices have been closed. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled as well, and the high Speed Rail Line closed. Heres Rupert Wingfield hayes. Im in the taiwanese Capital And Type a as you can see here, theres always a lot of rain here, its disgusting and windy but nothing like what they are experiencing in the south of taiwan right now, particularly in the main port city, taiwans second city. Its a city of 2. 5 million people and its been hit very hard right now by this very large typhoon. It came on shore, the i came on shore at about lunchtime today, and theyve been recording gusts up to 220 kph so strong that Weve Seen Pictures here of these winds literally picking up these winds literally picking up empty Shipping Containers stacked on the side of the poor and literally tossing them across the port side. Theres also roofs being ripped off, signs knocked down, lots of trees being knocked down, theres also local flooding we are seeing now. This typhoon is moving incredibly slowly. Its been called by locals here rare and weird rare because we very seldom see typhoons coming in from the west of taiwan, they usually come from the central mountains. This is coming directly from the west hitting straight on the city. Then they call that weird because its moving very, very slowly. It hovered offshore for around two days, then it crawled on Shore Today at literally walking pace for kph thats a problem in itself because that means itll spend a lot more time over the island as it gradually breaks up. 0ver Island as it gradually breaks up. Over the next 24 36 hours, lots of time for it to dump vast amounts of rain onto populated areas of taiwan and into the central mountains, and that has the potential for causing flooding. So although the typhoon has now been downgraded to a category one typhoon, and it is expected to further weaken and break up tonight, we are still not Out Of The Woods at all, there is still a lot of potential for this typhoon because lots of damage, from flooding. Weve today also and cooperation. Weve today also the and cooperation. Weve today also the elements of a Victory Plan also the elements of a Victory Plan of also the elements of a Victory Plan of our state that will strengthen ukraine. 0ur ukraine Correspondentjess Parker has been telling me more about whats behind the Nato Chiefs Visit to kyiv. Mark rutte, who obviously has just taken over as the new nato secretary general, the head of that defensive Military Alliance hes trying to make a point by coming to ukraine, coming to kyiv, holding a Press Conference in his first week to show that, as far as hes concerned, that relationship remains strong. And hes talked already this week about Ukraine And Support for ukraine being a priority. But i was at that Press Conference, i got the opportunity to ask Mr Rutte who, of course, was formerly the dutch Prime Minister people in ukraine, they dont want sort of symbolic gestures, they want concrete steps. And a lot of people are now looking ahead to an upcoming meeting of whats called ramstein its a Defence Contact Group where Weapons Supplies to ukraine are discussed. And i asked him quite specifically whether he thought there could be a decision that has long been waited for here on whether ukraine might get authorisation to use western made long range missiles on military targets inside russia. And he replied, saying that ukraine has the right to defend itself, that russia is pursuing an illegal war. And he talked about how targeting jets and missiles before they can be used on infrastructure in ukraine can save lives, but its up to individual allies. So, i think he was keen not to take his answer any further than before but for president zelensky, there were occasional expressions of frustration, i think, during that Press Conference, that that decision still hasnt been made. A doctor in the us has pleaded guilty to a charge relating to the death of the actor, Matthew Perry. The Friends Star died last year after an overdose of the drug ketamine. Dr Mark Chavez admitted obtaining the drug fraudulently and conspiring to distribute it. A warning this report from our la correspondent Emma Vardy contains flashing images. As chandler bing, he was known as the funny one from friends. But in real life, the actor Matthew Perry had made no secret of his long battle with addiction to drugs and alcohol, and had been undergoing a type of Ketamine Therapy for depression. He was found dead in his jacuzzi last year at his la home, with a high concentration of the substance in his blood. Now, a doctor called Mark Chavez, who prosecutors say was part of a group of people who were exploiting the actor, has pleaded guilty of conspiring to distribute ketamine. Mark entered his plea of guilty and thats now public record. So you can all access that if you want to. But thats what happened, he accepts responsibility and then we set sentencing. Chavez admitted to obtaining the drug from his former clinic using a fake prescription and from a medical wholesaler. Hes one of five people charged in connection with Matthew Perrys death, including another doctor, salvador plasencia, who allegedly provided the drug for the actor. Prosecutors say Matthew Perrys assistant worked with the two doctors to provide the actor with more than 50,000 of ketamine in the weeks before his death. The two doctors had joked about how much money they could make from mr perry, writing in text messages, i wonder how much this moron will pay. Chavez will be sentenced next year and could face up to ten years in prison. Emma vardy, bbc news, los angeles. Now we all know what killed off the dinosaurs but now, scientists says the asteroid that wiped them out 66 Million years ago was not the only one. Researchers have confirmed a second, smaller Space Rock smashed into the sea off the coast of West Africa, creating a large crater during the same era. It would have been a catastrophic event, the scientists say, causing a tsunami at least 800m high to tear across the atlantic ocean. Sean goolick is Co Author of the study and a Research Professor at the university of texas at austin. He told me why this discovery is so significant. Well, its a really interesting discovery, entirely buried under the Continental Shelf of West Africa, and only imaged in geophysical data. But its beautifully imaged in three dimensions, and its exciting that it happens to be potentially close to the same time as the Chicxulub Event66 Million years ago known to be the main cause of the Extinction Event that killed the dinosaurs, and 75 of life on earth. Absolutely fascinating. So tell me a little bit more about this second asteroid. What did it do . Where did It Hit, and what was the impact of it . Yeah, so its a much, much smaller it probably was smaller than, say, 500m, you know, probably about the size probably about the size of the Asteroid Bennu of the Asteroid Bennu that, you know, is a that, you know, is a near Earth Object today. Near Earth Object today. And its thought, based and its thought, based on the 3d data, that we can on the 3d data, that we can constrain It Hit this shelf constrain It Hit this shelf off West Africa, coming in sort off West Africa, coming in sort of at a low angle of at a low angle in a shallow sea. In a shallow sea. And those hundreds of and those hundreds of metres of water It Hit metres of water It Hit wouldve generated a pretty wouldve generated a pretty significant tsunami, significant tsunami, certainly destructive to, certainly destructive to, you know, life on the coast you know, life on the coast of West Africa and of West Africa and potentially, you know, potentially, you know, damaging across the ocean. Damaging across the ocean. It may not have been it may not have been a global event, however, a global event, however, it wouldnt have been large it wouldnt have been large enough to have, say, enough to have, say, caused a global catastrophe caused a global catastrophe on salmon in preparation in the way that chicxulub did. The jury at Newcastle Crown Court has heard that 53 year old Thomas Kwan pretended to give the man A Covid booster jab. He denies the charges. From newcastle, heres fiona trott. A gp with murder on his mind. Thats what the prosecution says. And its why he checked into a hotel under a false name. He left hours later wearing a hat, mask and tinted glasses as a disguise. And it was a good disguise. The jury was told that when he came to his mothers house, even she didnt recognise him and asked him if he would check her blood pressure. He then told her partner he would give him A Covid booster but it wasnt a booster, the prosecution said, it was a poison causing a life threatening flesh eating disease. Poisons were found at mr kwans home on teesside, along with Castor Beans and a recipe for ricin, which could be used as a chemical weapon. Now, it may only be october but in venezuela, Christmas Season has already begun. Last month, president Nicolas Maduro announced that celebrations would officially begin early, in an apparent attempt to lift the countrys spirits. Christmas trees and decorations were put up in the Capital Caracas this week. Many view the decree as an attempt to distract a crisis weary population. And theyre off. We are lifting anchor and are Sailing Away that is right, we have got the full go ahead, and we are making our way to scotland, first stop, Sailing Away, baby, on our Sweet 0dyssey its been a while, weve been reporting on that story. Good evening. Well, after a chilly start today, we all got the long awaited Sunshine Weve been craving after such a wet september. This was staffordshire a little earlier on, but it was a fairly familiar story right across the country all thanks to High Pressure, which is slowly starting to drift its way steadily eastwards. And it will allow the door to open to this Weather Front into the northwest, bringing some showery outbreaks of rain. It will prevent temperatures from falling too far, but elsewhere, under those clear skies, expect the temperatures to fall away once again. Low single figures in sheltered rural areas of england and wales. A touch of frost and patchy fog is likely first thing in the morning. But, as we go through the day, well continue to see this North South Divide across england and wales. After that sunny start, well have fair Weather Cloud developing. But temperatures are still likely to peak between 15 17 celsius. Maybe cloudy skies and a few scattered showers into the isle of man, more overcast and damp across Northern Ireland, with showery outbreaks of rain into western scotland. Sheltered eastern areas should stay driest for longest. Highs here of 13 14 celsius. So, as we move out of friday into the start of the weekend, the High Pressure continues to lose its grip and allows Anotherfront To Push in this one will bring some more heavy and persistent rain with it. So, once again, well see double digits to greet us first thing on saturday. But still a chilly start for england and wales thats where well have the best of the sunshine throughout the day on saturday. Some of this rain could turn quite heavy, though, on saturday, through Northern Ireland and into scotland, gradually pushing its way steadily northwards and eastwards. The Wind Direction Swinging around to a Southerly It might feel a degree or so warmer, despite the temperatures suggesting a similar Story 11i 17 celsius. But Saturday Night is the night where that front will continue to push its way quite widely across the country, and it will bring a spell of wet weather as it does so. So, wet and windy through the early hours of Sunday Morning that trails away, and you can see how itll stay pretty unsettled with plenty of showers developing. And thatjust opens the floodgates for yet more unsettled weather as we move through the week ahead, particularly from wednesday onwards. Thats it, take care. Hello, im ben brown.
