There . What is being heard and said at the un is being there . What is being heard and said at the un is being very said at the un is being very different to what is being heard and seen in the Middle East right now. When we woke up this morning, there was talk of the Ceasefire Proposal that was being put forward yesterday, but as the day has gone on, we have heard that a strong response from Benjamin Netanyahu who said he hadnt even responded to the proposal yet but they would continue to fight full force. We have seen that on the ground here. We have seen more continuing israeli Air Strikes and in the south of lebanon. Also here in beirut. Another one of these pleasant strikes here in the Southern Suburbs of beirut, only a couple of kilometres away from where i am talking to you right now. I went down there in the aftermath of that to see what was happening. Its less than an hour since this Air Strike was reported in the Southern Suburbs of beirut. I want to show you, you can see there, this is an apartment on the first or second floor. You can see the damage that has been caused. The idf described this as a precision strike. When they carry out the operations in the Southern Suburbs, they are normally targeting the senior leadership of hezbollah. Some of the senior commanders in this area just a few days ago, they killed hezbollah s head of its Missile And Rocket programme. We know they have been carrying out strikes. You can see the aftermath of a moment like this. You can see members of hezbollah in The Street but you can also see that the army are here. You can hear the sound of sirens and ambulances that are arriving as well. I want to show you in this direction, too, just come around and you can see the chaos in The Streets here. People are trying to work out what has happened as people try and work out who has been targeted. And, of course, it really impacts the civilian who live in this area. The Safety And Security as well when they see something like this happen very close to them. Well, that is what is happening in the Southern Suburbs of beirut at the moment. Suggestions that might have been the head of hezbollahgear unit. We will find out in the next few hours. You see around the country at the impact of those strikes. I spoke to our Correspondent Injerusalem to correspondent in jerusalem to get Correspondent Injerusalem to get the latest. When the talk was out there this morning, the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu was on a plane to New York. He wasnt, if you like, available to respond. His office issued a statement later in the morning, making it clear he had not actually responded to this proposal yet and that he was instructing the military to carry on Fighting Hezbollah with full force. It is a Coalition Government here in israel. There are some far right members of the coalition who are completely opposed to any kind of Ceasefire Deal with hamas, relating to gaza. And are opposed to a Ceasefire Deal relating to hezbollah. We have had the Security Minister and the Finance Minister both coming out this morning saying they are completely against it. I think calling into question whether they will remain part of the coalition whether they would be a ceasefire. They are saying they need to keep targeting hezbollah, while they feel hezbollah are on the Back foot. ,. ,. , foot. The timing of all of this is notable foot. The timing of all of this is notable as foot. The timing of all of this is notable as well, foot. The timing of all of this is notable as well, daniel, i foot. The timing of all of this| is notable as well, daniel, for so many months the concerns where this type of escalation would come from a miscalculation from one side or another, an attack that ended up another, an attack that ended up killing in a number of people, but was provoked by the explosions of Hezbollah Pagers and Walkie Talkies here in lebanon, israel has not admitted to doing it but it was clearly, it would appear, orchestrated by them and they chose that timing. fist orchestrated by them and they chose that timing. Chose that timing. At the beginning chose that timing. At the beginning of chose that timing. At the beginning of last chose that timing. At the beginning of last week, | chose that timing. At the beginning of last week, israel formally fixed this returning people in the north of Israel Home who have been displaced by hezbollah rocket fire. It was only after a few hours that was fixed we saw the Pager Explosions and then we saw Air Strikes in beirut, one today, and that is the fourth in over and that is the fourth in over a week, actually, less than a week. We have seen these very, very extensive Air Strikes in lebanon Killing Hundreds of people. This is one thing after another. We have seen clear change in rhetoric. Indeed, the military leadership, political leadership, talking about the only military action appears to be able to deliver the goal they set for themselves. At the moment, the seem to be ruling out any diplomatic solution, from what they are saying publicly. There has been talk, including from the head of the military, involving a Ground Incursion into lebanon. That was Daniel Injerusalem with the latest of the developments today. Another topic of conversation here in lebanon is people trying to leave the country, which is proving incredibly difficult at the moment. There is only one civilian airport in lebanon and most of the commercial airlines that fly they have stopped at the moment. There is only the lebanese national airline that is flying and the iraqi airlines are flying as well. It is difficult to find seats on those planes. At the same time, you have the us government and Uk Government are urging their citizens repeatedly to leave. Lets speak to robert who is still in the country, up there in the beautiful mountainous area of lebanon. Thank you for joining us. I appreciate it. Are you choosing to stay or are you trying to leave . Ida. Are you choosing to stay or are you trying to leave . You trying to leave . No, i am choosing you trying to leave . So i have been here for seven years and that . So i have been here for seven years and it that . So i have been here for seven years and it is that . So i have been here for seven years and it is a seven years and it is a beautiful country. I would say it remains a beautiful country, despite all the chaos, despite all the financial chaos which we have been seeing for the last five years, and now this conflict as well. And i am very passionate about the work i am doing here. And i have a house and i have pets and i have built a life for myself and i am lucky enough to live in an area which is quite safe. It is area which is quite safe. It is a christian area, a little bit of a bubble, a Safe Bubble and so it doesnt make sense to me to leave everything i have built up here and to leave and not know when i might be able to come Back. It not know when i might be able to come Back. To come Back. It is interesting to come Back. It is interesting to hear you to come Back. It is interesting to hear you say to come Back. It is interesting to hear you say that. To come Back. It is interesting to hear you say that. I to come Back. It is interesting to hear you say that. I know i to hear you say that. I know the area very well. It is a beautiful place. You are also close enough to be able to see and hear some of the Air Strikes that are going on in the valley, are you . Strikes that are going on in the valley, are you . Very much so, the valley, are you . Very much so. Yes the valley, are you . Very much so. Yes my the valley, are you . Very much so, yes. My house is above a town that was struck Last Night. It woke me up. It was scary. Feelings of guilt of not being able to. I could help but i promised my family and friends that i would stay safe and avoid these dangerous areas. For now, i am carrying on with my life here and, yes, assuming and hoping that things werent move to unexpected areas, out of the areas. I appreciate it is a difficult calculation to make, especially somewhere you have lived for a long time and it is home. When you hear those repeated warnings from the british government, from the prime minister, foreign secretary, telling people to leave urgently, is that something you feel compelled to act on . I mean, they have been telling us to leave since last october. That has not changed. It was shocking that the register of british nationals. Two weeks ago and possibly as a result of an article in the times yesterday, it came Back online Last Night. At least they know who is here. But. I speak the language, i know the local area, if you are talking to somebody who has come here on holiday and does not know the context at all, it is different than talking to someone who has lived here from a while and knows which area i safer not. Someone from London Wouldnt walk down peckham High Street in the middle of the night with an iphone, they would know which areas are safe and not safe. It has been so long and so many generations now away from war and we hear war and think everything is Chaos And Life stops. At least where i am there is a lot of tension, for sure, and people are definitely feeling it but most people are just carrying on with their lives. ,. ,. ,. , lives. Yes, understood. Let mejust tell you a little bit about the offences he has been charged with now that they have been revealed. Five counts, including bribery and receiving Campaign Contributions from foreigners. The indictment says he sought and accepted illegal contributions for his mayoral campaign in 2021. Now, you heard Eric Adams seeing it as a painful day and he is going to rebuild. He looks forward to defending himself and the people of New York. A number of people of New York. A number of people are questioning whether he can actually stay in office as mayor of new York City and also defend himself. These are pictures from earlier when his official residence was searched by federal agents. Those charges were not revealed to us but they have been in the last 30 minutes or so. Also questions from other democrats, Eric Adams is a democratic politician, about whether these charges brought against him will cause issues in the president ial election campaign. Some concerned that republicans might seek to use what is going on with the mayor of New York to Cast Aspersions on the harris campaign. Just to quickly recap, we havejust been hearing from the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, and his supporters, as prosecutors in the us have charged him with a number of counts of criminal offences, including bribery and receiving Campaign Contributions from foreigners. I think we can nowjoin our North America Correspondent who has been following the Story for us. Hello again to you. Eric adams seeing he is looking forward to rebuilding and defending himself. But actually lots of calls for him to step down as well. Lots of calls for him to step down as well. Yes, Eric Adams has ust down as well. Yes, Eric Adams has just had down as well. Yes, Eric Adams hasjust had his down as well. Yes, Eric Adams has just had his first down as well. Yes, Eric Adams hasjust had his first public has just had his first public appearance since the indictment has been unsealed. An indictment, lengthy 157 pages, that charges him with bribery and fraud. Before i get into what he said at that appearance, just to walk you through some of these charges. Essentially, the five Count Indictment accuses Eric Adams of accepting concealed illegal contributions from foreign business people, and at least one turkish official, for at least a decade. They say that when he ran for mayor, he then applied for matching new York City Public Funds that prosecutors alleged amounted to him receiving his campaign 10 Million by fraudulent means. They say, any kind of quit by pro situation, the turkish official tried to cash in on his influence with Eric Adams, having him approve a Consulate Building for the turkish government, a High Rise building, despite safety concerns. The accuses Eric Adams of doing so and saying that a Fire Department Official would be fired if he didnt certify that building. As i say, a 57 page indictment. In lot here, including accusations that Eric Adams worked with others to conceal his conduct, including telling one associate he was deleting her messages but Eric Adams with a very defiant tone, as what we heard Last Night as well, at this event when he was heckled and called a disgrace by people present. He was also joined by some of his supporters. He said he wanted New Yorkers to wait to hear the full Story from him. He said he would continue to carry out his work as mayor and that nothing would change. Briefly, what is the reaction in new York Society to all of this . Do people generally say they want him to stay in office while he defends himself against these charges . Yes, well, against these charges . Yes, well. Look. Against these charges . Yes, well, look, eric against these charges . Yes, well, look, Eric Adams against these charges . Yes, well, look, Eric Adams has l against these charges . Yes, well, look, Eric Adams has been under a cloud of federal investigation for nearly one year. We have had some calls from democrats, as Eric Adams is a democrat, calling for him to resign. Other prominent democrats, including the Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in washington, they have sidestepped questions, including the New York governor, who has the power to remove him. This is certainly something that is clearly for democrats and a tough issue. Given this is a former cop who is now accused of corruption, certainly for democrats, they are concerned republicans will seek to capitalise on this. Thank you very much.
