Welcome to the World Today an hour of international news from the bbc. The Israeli Military says it will step up its offensive against hezbollah in lebanon, after mondays intense bombardment which s killed more than 560 people. Bombardment which has killed more than 560 people. It was the deadliest bombardment the country has seen in decades. President biden has warned the United Nations General Assembly of the need to prevent a Full Scale War. Fierce Cross Border clashes are continuing with hezbollah Launching Dozens of rockets from lebanon, shown here in purple. The locations of Israels Air strikes are marked in red. In the past few hours, the Israeli Military says it has killed a senior Hezbollah Commander in its strike on beirut. These pictures show the extent of the destruction and the wreckage in the aftermath of that attack. Its led to a Mass Escape of civilians from their homes, causing gridlock on the roads. Tens of thousands of people have been trying to move further north. Within the past couple of hours israeli prime Minister Mr Netanyahu made this direct address to people in lebanon. Translation i am finishing visiting one of our intelligence bases and i have to say that i am deeply impressed with the job that was done. And even more with the job to be done. We will continue to hit hard on hezbollah, and i tell the people of lebanon that our war is not with you. Our war is with hezbollah. Nasrallah is leading you to the brink of the abyss. I told you yesterday to evacuate the houses in which a missile was planted in your Living Room and the rocket in your garage. Anyone who has a missile in their Living Room and a rocket in their garage will not have a home. But i will tell you another Thing Nasrallah is endangering your country. Rid yourself from the grip of hezbollah. As we mentioned, Joe Biden has made his final speech to the United Nations General Assembly as us president. He spoke about the escalating violence in the Middle East and called for a diplomatic resolution. Full Scale War is not in anyone s interest, even if the situation has escalated, a diplomatic solution is still possible. But the fact remains, the only fact, to lasting the only path to lasting security to allow the residents from both countries to return to their homes on the border safely, and thats what we are working tirelessly to achieve. Sirjohn sawers is the former head of britains secret intelligence service, mi6, and a former ambassador to egypt. He gave us his view on the situation. What we are seeing is a very force for israeli offensive but its stopped short in two ways. One is with Ground Troops across the border and obviously all western countries are imploring israel not to send Ground Troops over the border. And secondly they have not taken on the most sophisticated hezbollah missiles, mainly based in the north of lebanon, and nor have hezbollah fired those missiles at israeli cities. So both sides are holding back to some extent. Our News Correspondent Anna foster is in beruit. She gave us this update. Well, what weve seen today, mariam, is really a a Carbon Copy in many ways of what we saw yesterday, these huge numbers of very intense Air Strikes that israel has been launching on the south of lebanon. And also, again, another what israel calls Precision Strike on the southern suburbs in beirut, really targeting some of the top commanders in hezbollah. Now, while i was waiting to talk to you there, i can hear in the sky above, im right in the middle of beirut, and you can heaR Drones in the sky, which is such an unusual thing. You know, the last time i heard the constant sound of drones like this was when i was in the south of israel, on the edge of gaza, because that is exactly the sound that you hear there. And yet at the moment, it is right here in the heart of the lebanese capital. And it shows you that that israeli operation is ongoing. You were showing those pictures of people, Tens Of Thousands of people who are down in the south of the country. And what israel is focusing on there is things like the hezbollah weaponry, the ammunition. They have made it very, very clear that they are going to really do everything they can to degrade hezbollah. Hezbollah, of course, are hitting back. They, too, are striking at targets inside israel. And dont forget that part of Northern Israel was evacuated in the very early days of the war. I was there as they were moving people out of those communities. Youve got people there who havent been in their homes for nearly a year. Israel says it wants them back, and it feels like this operation is very much tied into that new stated War Aim that was added last week, where israel said that it wanted to return its people home on the northern border. But, you know, if youre here in lebanon, the question now is what do the next few days and the next few weeks bring . People dont know, and theyre scared to talk to us people dont know, and theyre scared. Talk to us a little bit. About the people who are impacted by this, because one wonders where theyre getting their Help And Assistance from, and how much pressure thats being put on the medical hospitals around beirut. Theres a lot of pressure on the hospitals. Weve heard that repeatedly from abiad, whos the Health Minister here in lebanon. He has talked about the hospitals really being under some considerable strain. And what weve seen as well is schools closed and being used now as Reception Centres to try and house those people whove moved out of the south, and also as well, weve seen action in the bekaa valley. Now, these are hezbollah stronghold areas if you live in those areas, because dont forget as well. Hezbollah is not only a Military Group, a proscribed Military Group in the uk, the us and other places, as is hamas. But its also a political group here in lebanon. They have mps in the parliament. And so people living in those areas are very much in hezbollah controlled areas. And i think that is what you see israel trying to do. Theyre trying to use this operation. Words to get people to turn their back on hezbollah. But will that work . Of course, bear in mind that if you live here in lebanon, if you see what is coming towards you from the south, your anger is very much reserved for what you see as the aggressor in this situation, which is israel. And thatjust makes it, mariam so difficult to see how this will end up. You talked aboutJoe Biden talking about there still being a diplomatic solution, ways to de escalate. But for people here at the moment, it is becoming increasingly difficult to see how and what that dE Escalation might look like. Ibrahim mneimnuh, is a . . Lebanese Member Of Parliament from the progressive left Beirut Al Taghyir party. He told us there needs to be a diplomatic solution. Pressure that this is causing on everyone, should allow in my opinion for the diplomatic solution especially after the last statements that have been put out by the iranian president , which were very clear, that Hezbollah Cannot confront idf on their own, and they come of the israelis might want to turn lebanon into another gaza. For that i think that it is for everybody s interests, especially older lebanese, represented by their Prime Minister to have a diplomatic solution as soon as possible. Miri eisin is a retired colonel of the Israel Defense forces and has a background in military intelligence. Heres her take on why israel is doing this well, what weve seen today, mariam, is really a a Carbon Copy in many ways of what we saw yesterday, these huge numbers of very intense Air Strikes that israel has been launching on the south of lebanon. If the innocence on all sides but what israel is trying to do is to enable a situation that hezbollah is not the one on the initial, that hezbollah is the one in defence, we are pushing them to a place where they will move out of those areas. Juan gariel wells is the Country Director for the international Rescue Committee in lebanon. He gave me a sense of the feeling in beirut. Thank you for having us. So just maybe to place us for some of your viewers. Weve been in lebanon here since 2011. Last year we helped some 243,000 people. So we know we know the country very well. Um, just to say first and to compliment one of your correspondents was saying the situation is very, very tense. There is a sense of real dread. There is confusion, even really across the whole country. Uh, the fear of that All Out War that has been bubbling under the surface, uh, is felt by absolutely everyone. Um, and just to say the word unprecedented, i dont think it doesnt even come close to describing the intensity of the Air Raids that people are facing here. In just the last 48 hours, there have been more than double the number of people killed in the whole of the last 12 months. Uh, were obviously very, very worried, deeply concerned, particularly of ongoing killing of civilians as a result particularly of ongoing killing of civilians. Yesterday we saw the carnage, we saw almost 600 casualties, people who were killed including a large number of children and women. Clearly if you look at the people who were brought to the Emergency Room is clear that they are civilians. They are not the combatants that, you know, israel is claiming they are. We know about the victims because our ambulances are the ones that transfer them to hospitals. And you know, what we saw is that these were people living in the residential homes, these are civilians. People who are civilians, who were, doing their normal things when the attacks occurred. And you know, unlike ourselves. Are southern regions are open to the media, they can check this information and they can check whether indeed those areas that were targeted were residential, where communities, were civilians or they were other things, you know, that israel is claiming. Also im not sure why there are these incidents discriminate Attacks Targeting of civilians to the extent that we are seeing now. Whether this is deliberate or this is just the nature of the war that is being fought in this decade. But definitely, we are looking at a more cruel war, especially when it comes to how civilians are being targeted. Lets speak to Dr Roxane farmanfarmaian whos a lecturer in international relations of the middle East And North africa at cambridge university. Dr, thank you very much for joining us on the World Today. Let me ask you, weve heard from israel about what their intentions are and what they are trying to achieve there, but there is a danger, is there not that this conflict will broaden out more and more . Theres always that conflict, but at the moment i think it is very clear that neither the united states nor iran wanted to become a larger war and they are the greater powers that will have an impact on what Happens to this war. So at the moment, we see that it is very regional, it is israel attacking lebanon, there have been numerous wars between lebanon and israel, the most recent significant one was back in 2006, but they have not been easy neighbours and in Fact Lebanon does not recognise the right of israel to exist, so it has been a conflicted area for many many years. Many many years. Very much conflicted many many years. Very much conflicted area, many many years. Very much conflicted area, and many many years. Very much conflicted area, and now many many years. Very much conflicted area, and now an l conflicted area, and now an area which is being heavily attacked by israel but also equally we are hearing in the last few minutes that the israeli army says that hezbollah has fired about 300 rockets on israel. Where is the path, do you think, to E Escalation going to come from . DE Escalation . This is still in the hands of israel in the sense that certain lately rockets from hezbollah, are, they have succeeded in d populating the northern part of israel and that has now become a Campaign Objective of israel to reposition their civilian population back into their homes. The fact of the matter is that the number of rockets and attacks that israel has conducted into lebanon and into hezbollah areas, and is logarithmically bigger than what hezbollah has been doing since the Hamas Attack on october seven, that started 0ctober seven, that started this whole conflict. We are saying its about 6 700 times more is really attacks then there are hezbollah attacks. Dr, thank you very much indeed for talking to us, we appreciate your time. Still to come on the World Today Keir Starmer makes his first Labour Party Conference speech as Prime Minister, he promises light at the end of the tunnel. And the prices of the so called skinnyjob drug, was a pick in the united states are under the microscope at a senate hearing today. Well have all the very latest. Around the world and across the uk, this is the World Today on Bbc News. Lets Ta Ke lets take you to the world of uk politics. In his first speech as Prime Minister at Labour Party Conference, sir Keir Starmer called for restraint and dE Escalation on the border between lebanon and israel. He also pledged to continue helping ukraine. While domestically, he defended the cut to Winter Fuel payments for some pensioners, and promised to Fix The Foundations at home. People said we couldnt change the party, but we did. People said that we would not win across britain, but we did. People said that we cannot deliver national renewal, but we can and we will. Cheering. We will stabilise the economy, clear out the tory rot, we will stabilise the economy, the tory root, Fix The Foundations and deliver the mandate of change, a britain built to last, built with respect, built with pride, because together we have shown that britain belongs to you. Thank you, conference cheering. Lets speak to our political correspondent Rob Watson whos at the Labour Party Conference In Liverpool what was the message or the vision the Prime Minister wants to put forward today . You picked out the Stirring Bit at the end, what you would expect of a party Leaders Speech to a Party Conference that just won speech to a Party Conference thatjust won an election. The message he was trying to get over and i will kinda condense it down because he didnt speak for an hour. Essentially kind of an obvious one which is, look, theyre are difficult choices had come decisions, weve left a difficult inheritance by the previous conservative government but hey, if we all pull together, if we are respectful, we will build a better briton eventually. Build a better briton eventually. Build a better briton eventuall. , eventually. And policy wise, what did we eventually. And policy wise, what did we hear eventually. And policy wise, what did we hear today . Eventually. And policy wise, | what did we hear today . Very little. What did we hear today . Very little but what did we hear today . Very little. But | what did we hear today . Very little. But i dont what did we hear today . Very little. But i dont think what did we hear today . Little. But i dont think that was expected, it was just a couple months ago that we had the king s speech which lays out Government Policy in great detail. This was much more if you like about him personally and about his values and about where he wants labour to position itself and the sort of idea that he keeps repeating which makes for tricky Conference Speech is, that hes not about rhetoric and that he is not about three words slogans that things wont be easy, so there was an interesting moment after the speech where i was sitting with a delicate and saying what did you make a good . The one person said, it did make me feel i was going to walk in a battle. And i said wait a minute, he doesnt believe in Rhetoric Or Slogan so maybe you shouldnt expect that. Slogan so maybe you shouldnt meet that expect that. What do you think the speech expect that. What do you think the speech is expect that. What do you think the speech is going expect that. What do you think the speech is going to expect that. What do you think the speech is going to do expect that. What do you think the speech is going to do in. The speech is going to do in terms of effecting those readings of Keir Starmer . They are not looking too good and healthy are they right now . Absolutely not, the first thing to note is those ratings, if you look at one of the Polling Companies in the uk, you goes, i think Keir Starmer is gone something from nine us 3 Favorability Rating 2 i3 . That is a pretty precipitous drop for the labour party. Sir Keir Starmer gets to this kind of thing doesnt get turned around quickly, there are a couple of references in his speech, actually, about how the british people have been promised in the past short term painful long term gain, light at the end of the tunnel, i think he gets what i guess all of this note which is in the end, if you want to be popular with the electorate youre going to have to make the electorate feel better about their lives and about their country. So in other words, about their country. So in otherwords, it about their country. So in other words, it stands for results, will it work . He gets that and lets wait and see what Happens. That and lets wait and see what Happens. That and lets wait and see what hauens. ,. , ~ what Happens. Rob watson, Thank Ou very much indeed. Pope francis has offered refuge in the vatican to me and mark. During a recent meeting withjesuits when he visited asia, he called for her release and set me on mores people cannot stay silent about the countrys situation. She has been held by the military since they overturned her government and the 2021 coup. Over the sky high prices of its hugely popular a Drug Company Ceo has been questioned in washington dc, over the sky high prices of its hugely popular Weight Loss drug. The head of Novo Nordisk testified to a Senate Committee Hearing on health, about why his company charges americans more than people from any other country for ozempic and wegovy. The drugs cost more than 1,000 a month for patients in the us, compared to about 100 a month in some european countries. Wegovy which is used for Weight Loss and 0zempic, for type two diabetes, have led to Weight Loss of 15 to 20 in patients, significantly higher than previous options. Dr Daniel Drucker is a senior scientist with the Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in toronto. Ll0 years ago, he discovered the hormone used in 0zempic. He told us that both the Cost And Supply issues are making it difficult for people to access the drug. Weve known about this foR Decades, the united states subsidises much of the global pharmaceutical pricing. Health care providers want to get the medicines to people who need them and we have two barriers now. One is pricing and the others supply. 50 now. One is pricing and the Others Mph now. One is pricing and the others showy others supply. So tell me a little bit about others supply. So tell me a little bit about the others supply. So tell me a little bit about the Reason L others supply. So tell me a i little bit about the reason why we are seeing these high prices in particular in america but also the impact those prices are having on people who need these drugs because they have diabetes issues, but also they have Obesity Issues that are impacting their health. 50 have Obesity Issues that are impacting their health. So the united states impacting their health. So the united states is impacting their health. So the united states is a impacting their health. So the united states is a bit impacting their health. So the united states is a bit unique l united states is a bit unique in that the prices are often multiples of the prices elsewhere in the world, and this is often justified to support the R D costs which are considerable. But obviously people living in the united states and countries where the medicines are responsive coming can benefit from them is a sin if you can afford it, and as i mentioned even if the price with pennies, the Supply Isnt just there, people are phoning a dozen pharmacies to find a couple months supply, so we have two prongs that are both immensely challenging. 0ne have two prongs that are both immensely challenging. One is the supply, the other one is the supply, the other one is the pricing. The supply, the other one is the pricing the pricing. The supply if i make, the pricing. The supply if i make. Is the pricing. The supply if i make, is about the pricing. The supply if i make, is about more the pricing. The supply if i i make, is about more people using these drugs to get skinny, they are very popular in hollywood and thats one of the reasons we are seeing such high demand. Its the reasons we are seeing such high demand high demand. Its hard to know how much high demand. Its hard to know how much that high demand. Its hard to know how much that contributes high demand. Its hard to know how much that contributes to l how much that contributes to the supply surge, simply put, the supply surge, simply put, the two manufacturers of the most medicines they simply cant make enough, and they are building new plants come plans often take a year or two to build, cost almost 1 billion. And then there are the pens that deliver the medicine, also short supply. Also very complicated manufacturing. So taken together its a sort of perfect storm, nightmare, you have these very popular medicines that reduce heart attacks, strokes, deaths and otherwise, wejust attacks, strokes, deaths and otherwise, we just cant afford them and we cant get them. That was one of the people who discovered the hormone and olympic. When it comes to 0lympic. Coming up on Bbc NewsS Newscast for uk viewers. Hello. Many of the areas so badly affected by flooding over the last few days have had a bit of a break from the rain today. However, more wet weather in the forecast for the rest of the week and eventually, it is going to turn colder as well. Now, this chart shows the rainfall we are expecting to accumulate over the next few days, and you can see this time the heaviest of the rain is expected to be across parts of north east england. 0ver high ground, it is possible that some places could see 80 to possibly 100mm of rain. For most places, tuesday has been spent in this gap between Weather Systems, but more Cloud Waiting In The Wings out in the atlantic. That is our next Weather System already starting to throw some cloud into the southwest of england. A bit of showery rain here, maybe a few showers running eastwards across Southeastern Parts of england as well. This band of cloud moving southwards out of scotland into northern england, afew showers with that. Where we see clear skies through the night in parts of scotland could drop down to freezing. We could also see some fog patches, say, across parts of the midlands, as we start Tomorrow Morning through tomorrow, we see this area of Cloud And Rain pushing across the South West of england up into wales, the midlands, some showers moving across the southeast. Northern england tending to cloud over through the day, Northern Ireland not doing too badly for some sunshine and for scotland, scotlands sunny spells, just one or two showers, particularly in the far north where it will be a cold day again. 9 10 degrees, even further south, 14 15 or 16 at best. And then through Wednesday Night into thursday, this low spins its way eastwards and this frontal system here becoming slow moving across northern england. So, that is why we have some cause for concern across northeast england. Already met office yellow warning has been issued, particularly in spots exposed to this brisk northeasterly wind. So, the rain really piling up over high ground here. Pretty wet at times as well for Northern Ireland, southwest scotland, the north and to the south of that, sunny spells and showers. And then, as our area of low pressure continues to roll away eastwards during thursday night, our band of rain starts to sink its way southwards and eastwards and as it clears behind that rain band, well, we all get into this northerly wind all the way from the arctic. A cold feel to the weather for the end of the week, particularly where youre exposed to the strength of that wind. And then for the weekend, well, mainly fine through saturday, but we will see heavy rain into the west on sunday. This is Bbc News.
