A supermarket in beirut. Other videos posted online show people with injuries, some of them severe. These are pictures inside one hospital being overwhelmed by the number of people injured. The lebanese government are appealing to citizens to donate blood and to ditch their pagers if they have one. The incidents happened in the groups strongholds in Southern Lebanon and beirut. Also injured in the attack was irans ambassador to lebanon, mojtaba amani, whos in a stable condition in hospital. Our diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams has more. Iwarning, i warning, there are description images from the start. This was a devastating attack. In supermarkets. On the street, in cars, at home and even in barbershops scores, perhaps hundreds, of hezbollah members simultaneously injured by exploding pagers. Incidents reported from all over lebanon, from beirut to the bekaa valley, and even in neighbouring syria. Each explosion was small, but some left terrible injuries, more than 2700 wounded, according to lebanons health ministry, and eight dead. Israel is saying nothing. But yesterday, the Defence Minister told american envoys that only Military Action would resolve the situation in the north. A message repeated by the prime minister. The Status Quo will not continue, Mr Netanyahu said. This requires a change in the Balance Of Power on our northern border. The situation there remains extremely volatile. Exchanges of fire every day between Israel And Hezbollah. Civilians on both sides exhausted by almost a year of Tit For Tat fighting. Kiryat shmona has been hit several times by hezbollah rockets. Yesterday, for the first time, israel said its Gaza War aims included allowing israelis to return to homes evacuated close to the border. Todays wave of attacks will have injured hezbollah s fighters, wrecked communications, and damaged morale. But will it change the course of the war . Paul adams, bbc news, jerusalem. Lets go tojerusalem and our correspondent daniel de simone. This is an extraordinary attack on hezbollah. What more is known about it was to mark what is the latest . Is the latest . Within the last hour, is the latest . Within the last hour. The is the latest . Within the last hour, the lebanese is the latest . Within the last hour, the lebanese health. Hour, the lebanese Health Minister has confirmed that Death Toll is now nine and says at least 2800 people are injured, with 200 of them critically injured, and he said that a young girl is among the dead. What we know is that these series of explosions throughout Lebanon Month throughout Lebanon Month throughout the whole country, started this afternoon and have been described as simultaneous, but not everything was completely simultaneous, they did not always happen at the exact same moment, but the explosions came from pagers held by hezbollah members. In the hezbollah members could have been doing anything, to be frank, there is cctv of people in shops, there is one image of a Mind Pain at the table, then goes to look at is pocket as if to look for the pager and then it explodes. Another man was picking its a fruit in the supermarket when his bag exploded, so you are talking about people who were out and about people who were out and about with people around them, so when there is this number of injuries, it could also be people nearby, notjust the people nearby, notjust the people targeted. Hezbollah has pointed the finger of blame directly at israel, and says israel will get just directly at israel, and says israel Will Getjust punishment for what he has done. Israel has not commented. The context is there is an ongoing conflict between Hezbollah And Israel going on since the day after the october seven attacks by my michael last year. On that day, hezbollah launched rockets into israel, and since then we have had thousands of Cross Border attacks by Hezbollah And Israel, hezbollah sending rockets and drones and israel attacking hezbollah positions with air strikes, and killed leading hezbollah figures in lebanon. Just yesterday, overnight, the israeli Security Cabinet met on formally added the return of israeli citizens in the north to their homes as one of its war aims, one of only four war one of its war aims, one of onlyfourwaraims, one of its war aims, one of only four war aims, you are three relating to gaza, so it is formalizing the fact that this conflict is taking place in the north as well and that thousands of people, Tens Of Thousands of people, Tens Of Thousands of people on other side of the border between Lebanon And Israel have been displaced, and there is a debate in israel over whether they should expand their conflict with hezbollah into Southern Lebanon. Dr andreas krieg, a senior lecturer at the school of Security Studies in Kings College london says no other party than israel has the capacity to do such an operation. I mean, if you look from a Cui Bono sort of approach, there is no other party anywhere in the region that would benefit from this sort of attack. And obviously, considering that this war has been going on for nearly a year between Hezbollah And Israel, israel is clearly the most capable and probably the only capable party in the Middle East who could have done that . East who could have done that. It is an extraordinary attack. Just tell us what we know at the moment about how it might have been carried out. Now, it is extraordinary in terms of the kind of coordination that would have been necessary, the pre planning. So basically, what we know now is, or what we think to know is that hezbollah has shifted to pagers a couple of months ago by basically banning also Mobile Phones being used because they have security risks. These pagers all seem to be centrally sourced, most likely motorolas, and somewhere israel would have had to interfere and infiltrate the Supply Chain of motorolas being distributed across the hezbollah network. There was a what we call a zero Day Sort of vulnerability implanted in this, most likely a bug together with some explosives, and they could have been then all remotely been activated from israel today, at the same time. And the fact that we have obviously dozens, hundreds of injuries, obviously, and at least eight to ten people dead, suggests that this has been a Massive Attack in terms of the scale, has been geographically distributed, which is also very new, and also very much a networked attack. The question is just why. And we will come on to that. But in terms of what in terms of infiltrating the actual sort of hardware Supply Chain, do we know where, obviously we dont know exactly which phones or which pagers were used, which company made them as yet, but which countries supply hezbollah with this sort of material . Now, its quite likely that iran, whos obviously heavily supplying the Axis Of Resistance, hezbollah being sort of the Crown Jewel of the Axis Of Resistance, that iran was behind the supply of this. Weve seen over the last couple of months already, loads of attacks inside iran against iranian targets by israel, which also suggests that iran is heavily infiltrated and compromised across its Supply Chain. And that might well very much happened here. Motorola seems to be the supplier here. The question is to what Extent Israel would have been able to use its links into motorola to basically implant a device across, you know, hundreds and hundreds of these sort of pagers. Thats quite a remarkable operation. It looks like there is a us State Department Briefing by you news agencies, urging iran not to take advantage of any tuition to raise instability, saying it is too early to see how it would affect Cease Fire talks in gaza, and hamas reportedly again sandy blasts are an escalation that will only lead israel to a failure and defeat. I am joined by a distinguished fellow of the American University Of Beirut joining us from the united states, thank you for being with us. What is your assessment of the impact of this attack on hezbollah. What will it mean . Will it mean . The impact will be similar will it mean . The impact will be similar to will it mean . The impact will be similar to the will it mean . The impact will be similar to the impact will it mean . The impact will be similar to the impact of l be similar to the impact of dozens of dozens of other serious attacks and events over the last 15 20 years. Hezbollah and israel have been fighting Each Other since the 19905. Fighting Each Other since the 1990s. First, israel was at the plo in South Lebanon and as the or developed they would attack them, and they occupied Southern Lebanon when they left. The Hezbollah Lebanon Fuse continued until the 2006 were with a between them, and i think is russ being in here havent said over the last few years that hezbollah is the most serious opposition in the region and the iran is the biggest forward facing, they are trained to send a strong message to Hezbollah And Iran and the others in the Axis Of Resistance that it does capabilities it does not yet shown, and if its one student one day, it can cause havoc all across the region. The trouble is that they have done this kind of serious move before, including killing and taking prisoners and attacking and occupying, but it is not brought them what they want, it is not brought them its omission by its or surrender, Orany Omission by its or surrender, or any negotiated peace that allows them to coexist. Hezbollah, though, it must feel it can have this number of pagers, this technology in frustrated like this . fit frustrated like this . Of course. Frustrated like this . Of course, its frustrated like this . Of course, its a frustrated like this . Of course, its a major move and a blow, but only under short run. Hezbollah historically has been very good at maintaining secure systems and having Back Up systems, but nothing is ever perfect, including, as we see, protecting american President S and ex President S, there is no perfect security anywhere, and we saw that on october seven. Do you think Hezbollah Or Iran if israel is behind this emma do you think therell be some sort of Revenge Reprisal Attack and if so what would it be . fit and if so what would it be . Of all for sure there will be some sort reprisal attack, or several attacks, what they may be we want be up to tell, but for the last three months, Israel And Hezbollah and iran have been exchanging messages and same they have more capabilities than they have used, iran with its missiles on joes wanted to attack israel, but he did not aim to kill a little people, hezbollah with its jones flew over israel a few months itsjones flew over israel a few months ago, its jones flew over israel a few months ago, showing israel what hezbollah can do, i know israel showing what it can do, so they are all playing a game of what they call chicken in the united states, where people are coming full speed at Each Other and whoever gets out of the weepers is saved on the other breast or wings, but we see how it will develop. But it means immediately, see how it will develop. But it means immediately, presumably, that hezbollahs means of communicating internally within that group are again compromised or limited. Perhaps, yes, for a short time, but you can be sure they have Back Up and Back Up systems, several systems. Theyll be foolish if they didnt, and they have enough experience in that, so i think its a hit dated for a short punitive time, and they will figure out how to overcome it. The problem is that there the other attacks that happen and the main issue that happen and the main issue that has to be resolved by all of us looking at this, is what is the intense on Israels Part . Do they want to provoke a big Hezbollah Attack and a bigger with iran and that the original war . Bigger with iran and that the originalwar . Or do bigger with iran and that the original war . Or do they want Tojolt Hezbollah and original war . Or do they want to jolt Hezbollah And Iran so badly that they would negotiate the kind of agreement that israel and the us is trying to negotiate, which pushes hezbollah back maybe ten miles from the israeli lebanon border, so it is hard to tell it what is the ultimate aim of this, but israel has made it clear that hezbollah is its most serious full, but also israel has made it clear, it does not want an all out war because the damage done in Israel Or Lebanon would be so enormous that everyone would lose. , enormous that everyone would lose. ,. , lose. Rami khouri, from the american lose. Rami khouri, from the american university of lose. Rami khouri, from the l American University Of Beirut, thank you. Around the world and across the uk. This is the World Today on bbc news. For many parents, the worry about what your children are seeing online is real. How to balance Freedom And Safety is a question families, governments and Social Media Companies are all grappling with. Now, the social Media Giant Instagram has announced a change to its platform, introducing Teen Accounts which they say will help protect teenagers and improve their safety online. It has parental controls as a Default Setting and will initially roll out in the uk, us, canada and australia, with the European Union being added later this year, and the rest of the world in january next year. Heres our Technology Editor zoe kleinman. Instagram already claims to have more than 50 tools aimed at keeping teens safe on its platform, but an ofcom study earlier this year found that every single child it spoke to had seen violent material online. These new measures aim to put more control into the hands of parents. Accounts belonging to anyone under the age of 18 are already made private by default. Now, if someone under 16 tries to make their account public, theyll have to add a parent to approve it. That parent will then also be able to see who their child messages, and which topics they follow. Older teens will have to verify their own age. Notifications will be muted overnight, and young people will get an alert if they spend an hour on the app. The biggest change is that under 165 will need parental permission to alter any of the teen settings. I think theres a side to instagram where you go down a wormhole and you cant get out of it. We spoke to some pupils in belfast about their experiences on instagram. Theres a lot of racism and a lot of homophobia going on on instagram, and people are just going along with it in the comment section. So yeah, ijust feel like i shouldnt be able to see that. I think that people of younger ages, parents should definitely get involved in their childrens accounts and just even monitor it. It doesnt mean, like, j you need to always be on your childs account. Some parents have campaigned for years for better protection for their children. Ian russells Daughter Molly took her own life in 2017 after viewing Self Harm Content on instagram. Meta are very good at Drumming Up Pr and making these big announcements. What they also have to be good at is being transparent and sharing how well their measures are working. So sometime before christmas, when these measures are in place and children are using them, we should know from meta how theyre working and where there are still problems and what theyre doing to plug the gaps. These tools might give parents more oversight, but they still Cant Control instagrams algorithms or what gets put on the app in the first place. And this is all assuming parents actually want the extra responsibility and understand what theyre supposed to do. Metas uk chief, sir nick clegg, had this to say last week. One of the things we do find ill be very open about this is that even when we build these controls, parents dont use them. Other big platforms like Snapchat And Tiktok also offer screen time and parental controls. Instagram hopes this new combination of Teen Account limits and parental supervision will result in fewer young people seeing harmful content on the app. Zoe kleinman, bbc news. In france, a man accused of drugging his wife and enabling her rape by dozens of other men has admitted to all the charges against him. In his first testimony since the trial opened, Dominique Peliciot admitted that he was a rapist, and said his wife gisele, who has waived her right to anonymity, did not deserve what happened to her. Andrew harding reports. Prison vans arriving at the courthouse in avignon. Inside, some of the 51 men on trial here. Handcuffed, all accused of raping one drugged and unconscious women. But many of those on trial remain free men. Masked, they entered the courthouse through the front door. And look who walks in beside them each day. The woman they are accused of raping, Gisele Pelicot. Boldy refusing anonymity, insisting the shame that belongs not to her, but to her attackers. No cameras are allowed inside the courtroom, but today pelicot s former husband dominique finally took the stand. He had this to say about the decade he admits he spent drugging his wife, then filming strangers raping her. Translation i regret what i did, even if it is unforgivable. I had nothing but love for my wife. We had a perfect family. It was me who was not good. Pelicot told the court he was not born evil, that he was abused as a child. Significantly, he was quick to condemn his co accused. Translation i am a rapist, like the others in this room. | they knew everything. Gisele then told the court it was hard to listen to a man she had trusted completely for half a century. News from the trial is creating new tensions here in mazan, the nearby village where the couple lived. The sense of shock in this small community is deepening by the day. The french police now say they have evidence that 80 local men took part in the rapes. 50 of them are now on trial, 30 more have yet to be tracked down. Translation we know 30 of them still havent been caught. There are tensions here because we dont know if we can trust our neighbours any more. But some here, strikingly, claim the whole Pelicot Case has been overblown. Translation it could have been far more serious. There were no kids involved, the women were killed. No women were killed. The family will have a hard | time, but they can rebuild. After all, nobody died. Such attitudes do persist here. But the far bigger story is how Gisele Pelicot is becoming a national hero. Breaking into a rare smile as she is cheered on her way out of court today. Her poise deliberate, designed to inspire other victims. Andrew harding, bbc news, france. We know what the charges are going to be without seeing the indictment. It is going to be a racketeering, it is going to be sex trafficking, it is going to be things along those lines. With more our Correspondentjohn Sudworth in new york. Well, of course, for decades, sean combs has been a titan of the music industry. He helped to bring Hip Up from a Sub Genre to the mainstream force it is today, but these charges unsealed in this indictment alleged that he used that influence as one of the few first he billionaires, essentially, to operate a criminal enterprise and fulfill his sexual desires by coercing women into sex acts, by influencing their careers, by plying them with drugs, by wielding financial influence over them, and most notably in this indictment, by using violence that left the prosecutors say with injuries that took them days or weeks to heal. Last week brought us lots of heavy showers, and a real Autumn Chill developed across the uk. But this week, things look and feel very different. It is as if summer has made a return. This is just a selection of the Weather Watcher pictures weve had from across the uk during today. Blue skies and sunshine thanks to high pressure, which is firmly in charge of the scene right now. Quite breezy around the edges of this area of high pressure, and some areas of cloud just drifting around as well. A bit of cloud just moving in across parts of east anglia, the southeast of england overnight. Cloud that has been affecting the north of scotland tending to retreat, becoming mostly confined to shetland. A few Fog Patches are possible through Northern Ireland, northern england, up into southern and eastern scotland, where temperatures will be dropping away, but where we have more cloud to the northwest and to the southeast of the uk, those temperatures holding up in double digits for many locations. Into wednesday, a bit more cloud in the mix for england and wales, but much of that will retreat to the east coast. Northern ireland and scotland should see a lot of sunshine, particularly sunny skies, i think, in the north of scotland. Will be quite breezy in the south. This feed of winds off the North Sea will also peg the temperatures back across some eastern areas, so 17 degrees there for newcastle and for hull, but close to the london area, also northern scotland, highs of 2a 25 degrees. Now during wednesday night, just keep an eye on developments here in the North Sea. It looks like well see more cloud forming and then rolling its way westwards, particularly across england and wales. Some of that cloud getting into eastern scotland as well. At the same time, we see more Cloud Rolling back into the north of scotland, but many places will still see some sunshine during thursday. Highest temperatures likely to be in western and southern parts. We could get to 2a 25 degrees, but as we look towards the end of the week, things do start to change. High pressure drifts northwards. Low pressure developing across iberia starts to edge its way in our direction. And across england and wales particularly, we will see some showers, possibly even some thunderstorms as we head on through the weekend. Now further north across Northern Ireland and scotland, where we will see a bit of Mist And Murk and low cloud for eastern coast of scotland. Otherwise, some spells of sunshine but starting to feel a bit cooler. This is bbc news, the headlines.
